That's the stock recovery - hold power and hit vol up to get the menu.
I've been doing that, but nothing happens.
I did a battery pull, and it rebooted in 2.3.4
So what am I doing wrong? Do I need to change something before trying the update again?
Hold power and slide from volume down to volume up. But that wont do u any good you need to flash a custom recovery and reflash super user.

Nothing is goofed up if you rebooted into 2.3.4.
The update did not apply. Did you receive the OTA or download it manually?
If you are unlocked just flash CWM via fastboot and apply it from there.
If you are locked then you can go back into the stock recovery, hold power down and hit vol up (in that order) to get the menu and apply the update. You may want to ensure it is in the root of the sdcard and named update.zip.
The OTA does not wipe nor is a wipe necessary, so you shouldn't be losing any data/apps.

If I boot up with Vol UP, I can then go to Recovery and get to ClockWork Recovery.
From there do I just hit update from SD card?

Yeah, choose apply update. Choose your zip from the SD card and apply.
It will go through a series of asserts and then apply if it passes. If you've modified any of the checked system files, boot image or kernel it's likely going to fail.

I used Shabby Penguin's one click root so I could use Titanium Backup only. (Although now I'll probably add tethering to the list) So I don't think I changed any kernel files.
It's saying it can't find the file. Whatever downloaded must have gotten deleted somehow. I may just download the update and do it myself like everyone else.

In CWM use the choose zip file from SD card option, then you can pick the file regardless of it's name.
That's it - if you are stock (other than rooting) it should apply without any issues.
You may need to reflash CWM and delete /etc/install-recovery.sh to keep CWM installed. I haven't looked at the update itself to see if it is installing the script to reflash the stock recovery.
I had this problem too. I rebooted and its back to 2.3.4. I will attempt to go to 2.3.5 today once I have more time and post my findings here. If anyone has any success please keep updating this thread.
It looks like I have to reflash CWM in order to restore Super User.
My bootloader is still unlocked, but it won't let me run/install CWM. How do I do this?
Jagar, I did finally figure this out after reading through the code in the rooting .bat that Shabby Penguin put together.
basically his file has the Clockwork Recovery image that you need.
Boot up in bootloader.
then type
fastboot flash recovery ______.img whatever image you have.
Then select RECOVERY on the bootloader menu and now you can install the superuser.zip file to re-root.
you might wanna just run the new one click again, make sure its version 2.0.. it will do teh dirty work for ya

@gnuf99 although you succeeded in getting root , please do read the guides abt adb and fastboot. This will be always handy for you, indifferent of the device you'll use later.

Hi everyone, if someone could help me out I would be so happy. I have flashed many ROMS through CWM and never had a problem. Decided to try a new one today 12/23/2011 WCX ILLUMINATI SERIES AT&T Inspire 4G ROM and it says it installed succesfully but when it rebooted it got stuck at white HTC screen. I got into hboot mode and when I try to go to recover to flash my backup it takes me to a black screen with a picture of my phone and a red exlamantion point. I have been searching for resolve but no luck. I have an inspire 4g. Someone please help a friend out!

One note to new users...this rom uses the stock recovery in order to have charging animation....in order to flash mods etc., you will need to download and flash latest version from CWM, but then you will loose charging animation....Be carefull adding scripts, the rom is already scripted for undervolting and battery life,other scripts may impact the way the rom performs

Well, you can try to flash CWM recovery from the Ace Hack Kit. And then run the restore....

First boot takes a long while. At this point, pull the battery, put it back in, and boot up normally. Give it a bit. If it boots properly and you want custom recovery, you need to go the market and download Rom Manager and flash recovery from it. If you can't get it to boot, you will need to get a stock rom in pd98img format, place it on the root of the SD card, and flash thru hboot. Then follow the above to get recovery. At that point you would be set to flash a rom thru recovery, or you could restore your backup.

Thank you for the information. Do you know where there is a link for the stock pd98img? I don't know how I will get it to my phone however since I can't seem to get it connected to my computer. Is there something I can do in order to get it on my sdcard since it's a microsd card? I have a card reader on my laptop but it won't fit my small phone sd card.

I actually must have, my bad. Like I said I have been flashing ROMS for quite a while, maybe tried 10 or more and never had a problem. I am hoping I can get my phone back. I did a backup in CWM so it would be nice to somehow just restore it. I need a new pd98file but I don't know how I will get it to my SD card since I can't access it from my compter. I will try again to plug it in USB to see if I can. Does anyoen know where I can get the stock pmg98 file for my inspire 4g?

That is your big problem now, you did a wipe/factory reset in hboot, so now you can't boot the rom you flashed and you also have no custom recovery. You can find a link to a stock rom in pd98img format in the sticky in the general section. However, you will need a way to get it on the SD card, like a SD card reader for the PC or another phone that you can put your SD card into and connect to the PC.

How do you do this? Hold the volume up button and power? I did that but all it does is vibrate 3 times and that's it. Thanks for you help, I hope I can get my phone back!

Thanks for the quick reply! Yeah I probably shouldn't have just started clicking things and trying things but I was freaking when I can't use my phone. So I will look in the sticky for the stock pd98img and figure out a way to get it to my SD card. So once I get that done should I just get to that install zip from sd and select my pd98img file and hopefully that works? Thanks again!

No. Put the PD98IMG on the root of your sd card, then use volume down/power to get to hboot. It will take a second or two but it will find the file and ask if yuou want to flash it. Confirm with volume up. Wait until it tells you its safe to reboot. reboot.

a little research goes a long way here.
volume DOWN+power button. puts you in HBOOT, select FASTBOOT, plug into computer, and find instructions for FASTBOOT flash recovery.....
you dont have to worry about finding a microsd->sd card holder to put the file on...
fastboot flash recovery (get the latest CWM img), then you can mount phone as usb storage in CWM and copy rom of your choice, then flash normally.

where can i get this p98img for my phone?
Look in the stickied threads for the General sub forum.
I've got CWM made into a PD98IMG.zip file. Rename the file from PD98IMG_recovery.zip to PD98IMG.zip. If you get a hold of an SD card reader put this on the root of the card and go to hboot, the phone will find it and ask if you want to flash it. Select yes and let it do it's thing. When it is done reboot your phone and you will have recovery again. It is an older version but it will get you back up and going until you can update it with Rom Manager.
Something worth mentioning is that after you restore something with a pd98img file, as soon as the phone is completely rebooted, move it off the root of you sd card. I would recommend creating a folder with the name of what the zip actually is and placing the zip inside it.

So, you've got the latest OTA (1.55.531.3) and the HTC unlocker tool won't work? Tired of waiting for HTC to issue a fix/resume the OTA? You no longer have to wait in agony.
These are the steps I took to unlock the latest OTA. They worked for me, they may not work for you. Anything you do to your phone is not my responsibility.
That said..
Backup what you can. Your phone is going to be wiped.
Make sure your battery is charged up.
Download the full 1.55.531.3 image. This contains the confirmation splash screen which wasn't loaded on older MT4GSes, and is the reason the unlocker tool won't work on our devices. You can get the full image (it's over 400MB) here:

In my opinion, S-Off won't really gain you much more. You'll have to flash kernels separately when flashing ROMs, but that doesn't seem to be a big deal (IMO).
You could probably flash back to the original release software if you wanted, and gain S-OFF with revolutionary, but I haven't tried that and have no idea if it will work.
The only thing you can't do with Unlocked/S-ON is flash radios.
Well in that case this phone is right where I want it. I've never messed with kernels on any phone I've had previously nor have I messed with flashing radios. I just got done completing the steps and I'm now root along with CWM. Great work throwing this up for everyone.

Well, where football is hosting the new PG59IMG.zip file is the only place we have it - i just found it yesterday and we haven't had time to up it anywhere else yet.
We are working on making mirrors for it now - give us some time to get set up with our new data.

No, you can't go back to retail factory if you are S-ON. This new PG59IMG.zip I found is the furthest back you can go completely.
With S-ON you cannot replace hboot, or radio - those two are a big deal - i'm still working on an S-OFF solution for S-ON people with hboot 1.45.0013.
With S-OFF I can swap out hboots on a whim, and thrice43 even flashed a Sensation hboot to his doubleshot and it worked out for him - but with S-ON you cannot do this. (and if you could, you would brick)
S-OFF is very much preferable to S-ON UNLOCKED.
I've also had problems flashing OTA updates through stock recovery manually when S-ON where I had no trouble doing so while S-OFF.
There are still a lot of things you can't do with your device while S-ON.
EDIT:
also, all the PG59IMG.zip files I made for people to flash recoveries, hboots, and so on in the dev reference sticky cannot be used by anyone S-ON because they fail the signature checks. My custom PG59IMG.zip files don't have an HTC signature which you must have for an S-ON device to load the PG59IMG.zip file.
...so there are a number of reasons why S-OFF is something to get.

You must flash a kernel if you want to flash an ICS ROM or any GB ROM with a modified kernel.

You need to transfer the recovery image to the directory with your fastboot.exe file.
You would then need to rename it to recovery.img
Then you boot your phone into fastboot mode, and plug it into the computer.
Open a command prompt, and navigate to the directory with fastboot.exe and run the command:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

Didn't work for me,I all the way to final step, but once i enter recovery for CWM,and try to flash the superuser file or anything else, it just shows the icon and nothing else happens.Once i click the power button it goes back to the CWM Home screen.Any advice on this guys ?

Didn't work for me,I all the way to final step, but once i enter recovery for CWM,and try to flash the superuser file or anything else, it just shows the icon and nothing else happens.Once i click the power button it goes back to the CWM Home screen.Any advice on this guys ?

You are using the trackpad to "select" within CWM, not the power button, right?

Thanks it was 'nt that. There wasn't enough space on the memory card and I didn't have USB debugging on.Got it solved now .Thanks for the speedy responses.Truly appreciated .Feels so good to be a part of this community.

These are the steps I took to unlock the latest OTA. They worked for me, they may not work for you. Anything you do to your phone is not my responsibility.
That said..
Backup what you can. Your phone is going to be wiped.
Make sure your battery is charged up.
Download the full 1.55.531.3 image. This contains the confirmation splash screen which wasn't loaded on older MT4GSes, and is the reason the unlocker tool won't work on our devices. You can get the full image (it's over 400MB) here:
Download the CWM recovery image:
Rename the full image downloaded in the first step to PG59IMG.zip and place it on the root of the SD card in your phone.
Shut the phone down, remove the battery, and boot back up while holding both the volume down and power buttons down.
The phone will check the PG59IMG.zip file and will ask you if you want to restore that image. You want to do this, but keep in mind this is going to wipe your phone. All data will be lost.
The phone will restore the image. This takes a few minutes. When it's done, you'll be prompted to reboot, and you'll boot into a completely stock MT4GS experience.
Use the unlock tool on htcdev.com to generate your unlock code. The splash screen is now on your phone, and you should be able to unlock (I had no issues).
I rebooted at this point, just to be safe, and set up my phone.
Copy the recovery image you downloaded earlier into the directory where you're running fastboot. Rename it to recovery.img
Shut down, boot into the bootloader/fastboot, and enter the following command to flash CWM recovery:
At this point, you should probably reboot the bootloader before entering CWM. Once you've done that, you can go ahead and flash superuser/roms/etc.

This is my first time.. I managed to S off.. But then the bootloop began after I flashed PG58IMG.zip via fastboot.
Step 1. To S-OFF your Sensation - (You do not need to do this if you have S-off already or done this before) - WORKING NOW for TMOUS users

download the application for your operating System. AND EXTRACT IT TO A FOLDER
YOU MAY NEED TO DISABLE YOUR ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM- Norton is flagging up Revolutionary as a Virus when it isn't
IMPORTANT
Fill out the form under the download links with your OS, Device, Hboot Version and Serial number. This will give your beta key to enable you to S - OFF. Make a note of this.
How To get your Hboot Version - 3 methods below
1. [/url] and if it has found your device it should read
"Found your Device: HTC Sensation Z710* Applications -> Development)
4. With the phone switched on (not in HBOOT, just the regular home screen), plug in your USB cable and select HTC sync mode.(IGNORE any warning messages on your phone telling you it cannot find HTC Sync )
5. Launch revolutionary.exe. It should detect the phone and ask for your beta key. Type it (BE CAREFUL, as its case sensitive) or copy and paste it in.
If Revolutionary fails to find your phone verify you have all the drivers installed, try disk drive mode or charging mode (Linux users can use disk drive mode. Confirmed to be working by others)
6. Once you have entered your beta key correctly, follow any on screen prompts or actions from revolutionary and wait for it to S-Off,
7. You're done. Your Device will Successfully have S-OFF....if it hangs on method 3 and doesn't S-Off. See post 2 below for solutions.
IF REVOLUTIONARY SAYS FAILED YOUR PHONE IS NOT SUPPORTED. Go back and check hboot using the methods above. some users are told its failed and they still have S off now. If you have S-off your hboot will now be 1.17.1011 and revolutionary will tell you now your device is not supported
8. Revolutionary will now ask you to Install clockwork recovery mod after S OFF. Type N and install it manually below (the recovery provided is v4.0.1.4 doesn't charge when device is switched off, the one below v5.0.0.1 does charge)
9. Your Device now is S-off.
To install clockwork recovery for the sensation. Follow step 2!
STEP 2. To INSTALL Recovery - v5.0.0.8
1. Download recovery v5.0.0.8 for the Sensation HERE: or Multiupload
2. Copy the PG58IMG file into the Root folder of your SD card (The main Folder of your Memory Card)
3. Turn off your phone FUlly and reboot into the Bootloader/HBOOT screen (see post above on how to get to hboot screen)
4. Press Volume up to Accept when it asks" Do you want to start the update"
5. Press Power Off to Reboot back to android after installation is successful (normal screen with homescreen)

Power off
Power on holding volume- and power button.

i was wandering alone while waiting for your reply n managed to install ext4 touch recovery.. lol.. but still bootloop when pressed reboot.
now I wanna know will the 5.0.2.0 help me to access android again coz i haven't backup my contacts n sms yet..
let's say the answer is no, will it help if i make a nandroid backup now? or is it too late considering i cant access android anymore?

Always backup(nandroid,Titanium Backup,google) BEFORE starting anything major.

btw, i thought it wasnt anything major coz it was just gaining an s off n then installing recovery.. then this happened.. i dont know what went wrong.. hmm

Hi,
Just as a matter of interest.
Do you still have a PG58IMG.zip on your sd card?
If so ,delete it.
Then it may boot into your ROM...

oh i've read that as well so i have deleted it manually by using sd adapter.. then reinserted it back n tried to boot normally.. but to no avail.. what's the root cause of this eh?
when i gained s off, i still can boot into my ROM.. however disaster happens when i flashed the .zip files obtained as per instructions..
oh but directly after i've flashed it, i didn't remove the .zip files n tried to immediately reboot into ROM.. does this make a difference?

good question..
immediately after s off, i boot into my ROM and tried to install busybox and other apps that requires superuser or root but failed and stating that my device was still not rooted..
so i proceed to install a recovery (in this case its ext4 recovery) but failed to find a .zip installer (but managed to find the .apk and .img version but afraid to proceed considering the extension wasn't the same as per guide's PG5...ZIP). so i tried to simply install cwm as per stated in the guide. coz i know after recovery is installed, only then i would be able to install the su zip files.
then it boot looped.. n here we are trying to shoot all of these troubles.. XD
and if my understanding was wrong, pls correct me. thanks!

wait a moment, i dont know if things are making more sense to me but, is it possible that this was caused by a wrong firmware? i just figured out my cid and its htc_044 and there are 4 different version of firmware for this cid, so should i try each of it until my phone boots to my original ROM?
Update: Oh God, I'm in such a relief! Thank God it works now. I flashed the firmware 1.17 n now am able to boot back into my ROM. Now i'm gonna get things backed up n will proceed. phew thanks so much for helping me out. The cause was maybe the zip files werent compatible with mine. So i check my cid n mid, n downloaded what might be the original one. so now its fixed..
I'm S - offed through sunshine (gotta love them guys) and had temp root with stock recovery, I assumed the lollipop update would fail but late last night it updated and I lost root. Any idea how to root again?

The issue is I don't have access to my personal computer for the weekend. Any other way to flash twrp? Flashify says I need root so it won't do it. Twrp manager I'm leery of because I heard the partition it puts it in is wrong thereby bricking the phone.
Unfortunately I don't believe Jcase has Sunshine working for lollipop yet... But that doesn't mean all is lost, just means you have to go a different means and you need to know how to use adb commands. Follow this address below and you will have a custom recovery and then you can install whatever custom rom or a pre-rooted LP OTA if that's all you want.

Scroll down and follow the instructions under either.... 'Download - ADB / Terminal method:' or 'Download - Fastboot Method:'
You might be able to try to install the Goo Manager app from the play store to do the recovery install for you. Just not sure if that works without having root. TMWN says it just needs s-off so you may be good. Wouldn't need a computer either for that method. Just make sure you get your download of whatever rom saved on your phone before you wipe your current rom.

Download this and move it to your ext-sd card (not in any folder) using htc file manager. Rename it to 0P6BIMG.zip

Then reboot to bootloader and allow it to flash. This will give you back the latest TWRP. Boot back up and delete that zip off your sd card. IF you don't delete or rename it you won't be able to get to recovery via bootloader (it will keep trying to load that zip).
Then download this (doesn't matter to where-just remember where).

REboot to TWRP manually and flash it. Bam... done.....
It's not flashing - hopefully the rename is OP6 and not zeroP6. When I go to recovery then bootloader nothing happens and if I apply from SD card from recovery it says "no package selected and access denied", I'm sure I'm doing something wrong but I don't know what.

Last question.... I hope, I can't get to twrp recovery. It just takes me to stock recovery with no option to get to a custom recovery.

Did you flash this in bootloader?
I power phone off, hold volume down and hit power. Usually at this point I have recovery, bootloader, etc, now I have no options just shows the zip running and a question to update or not.... Either option goes to not updating.
Ok - apparently sometimes I'm a little slow..... All worked incredibly well once user error was taken out of the equation. Thanks Mr. Dottat, you're truly an asset to this forum!!

Missed the part about deleting eh? Lol.
Glad you got it sorted.
When it came to update or not to update, I assumed I had to use the volume rocker then hit the power button to invoke the action. I was trying to go volume down to get to update when in reality volume down was the action needed to deny the update!! ?
