Windows 8 on Xoom (wingray)? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm curious if it will be possible to install the Windows 8 preview on the Xoom:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/consumer-preview
I'd love to test this, but I have no clue how to start. If any devs out there want a guinea pig for this, please let me know how I can help!

First off, wrong section. This has absolutely nothing to do with active development.
Secondly, if you want to start making drivers for all the hardware windows 8 will need to run correctly, then best of luck to you.
Otherwise, I don't see this happening at all, ever.

My mistake. I thought this was the Xoom Android Development section, and adding Windows 8 to the Xoom would fall under development.
no reason to be stinky.

Unless you were about to actively port this over to the Xoom, then it would fall under Development. You asked a question so it should fall within the Q&A section.

Even if someone did pull this off, you wouldn't find it on XDA due to licensing issues.

Then where can we expect

Nowhere because I highly doubt anyone is attempting this. Just keep an eye out on the technology news sites, because if someone does get it working they will possibly post an article and how-to.

Planning to root my transformer...any suggestions.

Well i just got this bad boy yesterday. Hardly able to put it down when I'm at home already.
Haven't gotten round to root yet. This weekend be the big event...lol.
So im hoping you guys can give me a few ideas as to the best roms and features available.
What rom do you guys use? Any favorites? And why? Too many questions I know.
Thanks in advance.

Anyone? Come on...you guys must have some good suggestions here and there.

The answer you seek is right on the front page of XDA...

^^^^hmmmm. Well i was more curious as to what most folks were using as their daily driver rather than seeking advice as to how to root the device, but thanks anyway.
Still. If anyone can recommend any good mods or roms or themes etc it would be appreciated.

Check your serial number, if it's >B70 then it's not rootable. Yes they are working on it but it's been almost 2 months and nothing. Appears to be locked down in hardware and thus not by-passible via the usual tricks of the past. Most likely it's because of DRM if I had to guess.
If your serial is B70xxxxx check it anyway, some of the B70's may be rootable if they still have the older SBKv1 ROM (or whatever it is).
Mine's going back (B80 serial) - it's a dead duck.
I suggest you return it and get something else so you wont clog the forum with the same stupid questions that have been asked hundreds of times.

Right...i just checked the serial number and it looks like I'm safe. Phew!
It says B50. So i can get on with my tinkering afterall. Thank God for that.
Would have been a bit silly to turn up again at best buy for the second time within the space of 3 days to return another tablet...lol.

Disabling Phone Features to make a Cappy into a Audio/Video/Game/GPS only unit...

I've tried a bit of searching and while there are a few threads about how to disable phone features, there is no discussion of anyone making a specific ROM that would that would focus the Captivate (or any Galaxy S I suppose) into a Media Player device. No idea how hard that would be and whether it would be as easy as taking an existing ROM and just rearranging and deleting the phone stuff.
Seems that with ICS being designed to work as both a Tablet and Phone OS, you could accomplish this with relative ease. I'm not a coder or ROM developer though, so I could be completely wrong on that too.
At the very least, the battery life would almost certainly increase if the phone never even tried to use the antenna or look for cell service. Seems like it might run smoother too and processing emphasis could be rearranged.
Any thoughts?
Here ya go... Captivate Touch

Here, think it will be a good idea => Windows 8 Development and Hacking > Windows 8 General
and my answer about your poll is : why not
Yea I noticed that! But it's still general so I'm safe.

Is the development of this phone dead ?

Thanks but following the threads i was aware of these news. The reason of my post was that due to the rarity of the hw of our phone and the very few developers still working on it and looking at the development going on on other phones my impression is that we cannot expect too much in the future. Hope i am wrong
Unfortunately, the phone is 'old'.
I have an i5801 until today, and I stop to use, and the development was one of the reasons. Is great phone, it is. But the most ROMs that we have (CM9, CM10), doesn't connect with the camera, and when does, you can't see what are you taking because of the black image. Also have freeze lag's all the time because of the memory.
I don't blame the developers, they did an AWESOME work, but is time to move on. The new systems are to heavy for our i5800.

That's true I think that untill kernel 3.4.x is ready we can not expect a fully working cm9 or cm10 and IF they get everything working with kernel 3.4.x it will be more stable i think... But still the developers do a great work I only would say keep it up

With all your wisdom, Mr. Whatever, do you really think this thread is helpful to anybidy in any respect. I sincerely feel this thread is a polluting one. And also if you respect drvelopers who have been working more than what many other forums could see, you should atleast not support this kind of junk threads.

I can just say 1 thing, that if samsung ever takes interest in xda, we would have had a stable ics by now
But with all the hard work that all the developer are doing here, our phone has definitely become more worthy than the cost at which we all got in the past

I am truly sorry if my post caused the perception of disrespect towards the developers. I absolutely appreciate the amazing work done by all the developers in keeping this phone uptodate as possible. Even if it is not my everyday phone I am still a proud owner of the GT-I5800 and I am still using it. I am very anxious so to see it still "efficient" :good:. As correctly stated by MicroGeek i was asking more expert members than me to confirm or disregard my feeeling of "end of the game" situation. Apologies if I hurted somebody's feeling. It was not my intention

Well, the key to learn about everything in the world is to be curious about it. As I've always said, I just do all this things because one day I was curious about it and though "why not giving it a try?" and that is how things start on my life.
Also, I don't think it is good to just stuck to one thing and only work on that since when you are working on something but you feel you cannot get forward by yourself, why stuck there instead of trying something new and maybe learn something new which maybe you could use to fix the first problem? If you don't move on, you'll get frustrated and only then is when you'll abandon the project (does this sound familiar to you? )
Curiosity is the engine of the world guys! If you are curious about something, why not try to make it yourself instead of waiting for someone else to do it for you?
