[Q] Asus TF101 won't turn on if it is not plugged in - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello community, my asus tf101 only turns on if it is plugged it to charger, be it PC or wall.
I have read many threads regarding the problems with the power button but i really don't think that is my case. Because if it is ON, a normal touch of the button puts it to sleep, and a normal touch puts it back on. But if i keep it pressed and turn it off, it will not turn on unless i connect it.
If i connect it, the tablet automatically turns on, and if i turn it off and leave it connected, i have no problems to turn it back on.
I have booted into cwm recovery and did the Key Test, and every key works normal, pressing vol+ or vol-, pwr, will print the key that was pressed.
I have cleared the battery stats, cache, dalvik, i did a complete reset, but its not working.
It only turns on if it is connected, i have tried vol- and pwr, also keeping pwr for 20 sec, 15 sec, 30 sec, 1 min, etc and nothing.
Is anyone else is having this same problem?
Any solutions?
Thank you

That is weird. Sometimes I find the power button on mine a bit wonky. But, usually to cold start it, I press and hold the power button for about 2 seconds and it comes right on.
Sorry, I have no suggestion.

Currently having this problem. Manually turned it off to enter CWM manually, and i can't boot to anything, no matter how long i hold the button. Just black. I don't have my cable here to see if it will boot. Guess I'll have to wait til morning.

How long are you holding for? Sometimes...i have to press for 10 seconds or more.

I have tried with 5 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 20 sec, 30 sec, and then like more than 1 minute and nothing man :S
The button works great if it is on, and it works great at CWM, i really don't think that its the pwr button fault, but have tried the solutions for the deep sleep, even the boot with vol- and pwr , nothing man

So if its plugged in and on, and you unplug it, does it turn off?

No, it continues using the battery.
And the battery discharges normally. It just does not turn on if unplugged ;$

Please report back how it went for you, i'm considering doing the RMA, but not sure since many people reports that when ASUS fixes something either it goes worst or it fails again in a very short time

Sure. Two day ago I send it to California Service Center. Usually it serviced in TX but tablet was broken in TX service center and I don't want to send it again same service center.

I'm having a very similar problem, but if I unplug the tab while it's on, it turns off now. It won't turn back on unless plugged in to a computer or the outlet.

My friend's Transformer will no longer boot up unless the dock or power adapter is connected after installing a custom ROM. He had the same issue when he had 1st bought a Transformer (all stock) and had got it replaced. This replacement unit was functioning fine (everything stock, no root) until I installed CWM/ICS etc. any bright ideas?
Btw, since this is the second time that this issue is happening to my friend, I'm wondering how a google search for the issue brings up almost zero direct results? Must be because of the dozens of no boots at all issues...

Send it to California at 3/2/2012 but today I got an email:
We will process your Transformer SN: BXXXXXX Model TF101 under new Rma No=USGXXXXXX by re-shipping it to our correct repair center in Texas.
We received this unit under original RMA # USAXXXXX which was sent to our wrong repair center in Fremont California.

I called to ASUS and spoke with supervisor. He told that replacement not available now and ASUS will resend it to TX for "repair". OK. I just file complaint to BBB and Attorney General but I found that ...BBB has ALERT on ASUS:
We have identified a pattern of complaints concerning customer service and service issues. Complaints processed by the BBB claim that 1) products sent to the company for repairs are still not working properly when returned to the consumer.
2) Customers calling the company are asked to call back or told they will receive a call back and in many cases don't.
BBB asked the company to respond to the pattern but has received no reply to our request.

This means that ASUS did not care at all. BBB has 674 complaints on ASUS service.

Hi,
I got replacement week ago and IT HAVE SAME PROBLEM (some times it wont wake up)!!! More that, I can't use wifi with WZR-HP-G450H router(every several seconds connection is freezing). I CAN'T USE MY TABLE AT ALL!!!
At the day before replacement was sent from ASUS I called to ASUS Customer service and representative rep told me that my replacement is testing for WIFI problems. I guess that this tablet was returned by another customer with WIFI problems and ASUS did some tests (and not found WIFI problems) before send it to me. My old TF101 worked fine with same router.
Now I am planning to make 2 videos with problems and post it every where and the I want to sue ASUS to return my money.
Dmitry

Same intermittent problem here too, usually it's fine but sometimes no charger = no boot.

Hello,
just for the record, I have an Asus Transformer with is showing the same issue.
It's stock and updated to the last FOTA release. Never rooted and never installed a custom ROM.
The power button works correctly when the tablet is on.
(P.S.: I haven't wiped since the HC -> ICS upgrade.)

Same problem:
Always turns on when in dock.
Always turns on when plugged in to charger.
Never turns on when out of dock with no external power.
Always keeps running when powered on and then removed from power source (including sleep and wake up).
I sent a request to ASUS support. The first response was to take it to a repair facility. I told them that's not going to happen since this is obviously not a hardware problem and I didn't want my tablet gone for 2+ weeks. The next response was to reinstall the OS. I'm still thinking about that one (maybe to Honeycomb?).
This happened near the time of one of the revisions to ICS (it worked fine with the initial ICS). We just got another firmware revision a few days ago, but that did nothing to end this problem.
I would be very interested to see if anybody determines what the problem is. I've tried removing apps that seem like they might have something to do with it, but no luck.
Good luck to everybody.

I'm having the same problem as of this morning.
Power button turns the screen on and off with no problem during normal use. It also works just fine to shut down the tablet, but I can only turn it back on by plugging it in.
I don't know if it's related, but I had just done 3x Factory resets to clear out any wifi settings as I've been struggling to connect it to the school's wifi. I think that problem is the school though.
Hopefully Asus will put out a fix soon. I tried calling their Tech Support, but they just want to repair it... again. (Had it in twice because it wouldn't charge, but would transfer files across USB).

Has anybody tried to downgrade to either the initial version of ICS (as I remember there was no power-on problem with that) or to Honeycomb?
I'm starting to research the procedure to do that, but would rather not be the pioneer.

[Q] Brand New G-Tablet, powered on once

Hey everyone.
I just got a brand-new G-Tablet through Sears. I'm checking here to see if anyone has any ideas before their tech support opens in ~two hours.
I got it to my office, plugged it in and charged it until the light turned green. Then I turned it on and played with it a bit. I didn't have a method to put it on the network right then to sync anything, so I really just poked around and then set it to the side. One thing to note is that I wasn't presented with a setup screen at all, it booted straight to home.
Then later that afternoon when I went to go home, it wouldn't power on. I'm not sure if it went to sleep or powered off, but nothing happens no matter what button combination I press. I've tried just pressing power, holding it down for 4 seconds, holding it down for 30 seconds, power and volume + at the same time, and power and volume - at the same time.
I tried hooking it up to my computer last night, thinking that maybe the display didn't come back from sleep and maybe I could force a reboot via ADB, but it must be off alltogether since it didn't trigger a USB installation on the computer.
When I plug it in to charge, the little light turns red, then a while later turns green, indicating that it is fully charge, yet still no joy.
Your thoughts?
Press the power button for a really long time to see.

Just held it down for 90 seconds, no dice. I tried pressing it briefly afterwards too just in case.
I think Roebeet and a few others had a similar issue. I believe they had to wait 24+ hours for the battery to drain. I can't find the thread but the search button may help
You didn't update the firmware, correct? This is a known issue with the older firmware and it's happened to me.
I believe that the device is frozen - and yes, when it gets in that state you cannot reset it, even when holding down the power button. You have two choices, when this happens:
1- Open up the back of the device (and thus voiding the warranty) and press the reset button on the system board. That will fix it immediately. I know this probably isn't the best option, but I wanted to mention it.
2- Unplug the device and wait for the battery to completely drain. This takes about 24 hours. Once drained, you can press the power button and it will boot up for 10-15 seconds before stopping - that's your queue that the device is "fixed" so you can start re-charging it.
Fortunately, this probably seems to be resolved on newer firmware, tmk. I've only had this happen on a device with the original stock firmware.
The two of you are gentlemen and scholars. I'll let you know how it turns out. I was on the phone to get the RMA when the line went all fuzzy and I couldn't talk to them. Then it did the same thing when I called back. Then I saw this post. Divine Intervention...
Going on 28 hours now and still nothing...I'll probably give it at least 3 days before I send it back.
Give it a few more hours, and then plug it in for a minute and try powering it up. the battery could be so drained at this point that it needs to be plugged in to go on.
Mine took 24 hours to drain, but I wasn't sure if it was at 100% charged, at the time.
Almost to the 48 hours mark and still nothing. I tried plugging it in briefly just to check and the red light still comes on, but it won't power up. Anyone know the possible standby time of a fully charged batter on these things? I was thinking if the system locked up and it isn't hardly doing anything, it could last a while...
Maybe a return to the store you purchased it from at this point. The battery should be dead by now. You should be able to get an exchange or you can try the other route Roebeet suggested but that will definitely void your warranty

The problem is that I'm in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Shipping time is at least 2 weeks and sears won't do an advance replacement. Neither will the Viewsonic support folks. So I'm either stuck having to buy a second one and waiting for them to get the original back before the refund, or waiting a month or more for a repair...
Are there any seals inside the case that get broken if you open it?
I don't know the answer but this may be of some help

Still nothing. Since its going to be over a month before I get a replacement, I'm just going to return it and wait for the new crop of tablets to come out. Thanks for the help guys.

Sorry to hear that. I think the reset button on the board would have worked, but I understand why you wouldn't want to open the device up. We shouldn't have to void our warranty to be able to do a hard reset.

But was your friend's responding at all? I get absolutely nothing. the only thing the tablet does is give me a red light when it's charging and a green light when it's done. The power button does nothing and volume down + power does nothing. doesn't nvflash require a connection over USB before it can do anything?

[Q] Transformer not powering on?

Hey, I got my transformer yesterday, and for some reason this is the 2nd time this has happened, fully charged battery, but the device won't power on. Attempted to plug into power but no dice. Held the power button for 30 seconds, nothing, held the power and volume up and nothing. Yesterday when this happened I plugged it into my computer (Windows) and held the power and up buttons and it turned on though it could have been windows detecting the drivers. Anyone else having this? Any suggestions? I haven't had a chance to test again and see if I can bring it back through that trick yet, but I will. Then I'll try a factory reset and see if it resolves the issue. I would hate it if this is a defective unit, that's for sure esp since they are so backordered. Outside of that I love the device.

when your device isnt coming on, does your computer give you a usb notification? You could be putting it in apx mode on accident.

I will find out in a few. The thing is this has happened when I left the device unplugged and in sleep when driving to/from work. Yesterday plugging it back into the computer brought it to life. Nothing else did. Not sure what apx mode is even.

EDIT: Ok, turns out it get stuck in some weird power mode. I plugged it into the computer with no resolution, when I held the power button for 10 seconds, then waited 5 and pressed it again, the device powered on. I suspect it might be an issue involving detecting WiFi access points when driving or something else. I'll Factory Restore and see what happens.

I had that sometimes in the first day I had it, after that it hasn't happened. No factory reset, just make sure to do a hard shutdown (powerbutton 10 sec~) while it's booted and it should fix the issue.

Yea, it had happened once already, and again. I'll be testing today when I leave work, factory reset and see what happens. Should it continue, I'll go to the next step. I'm just not sure what it is. Interesting bug to say the least.

I still don't really know what APX mode is, from the limited things I have seen about it, in order to get into such, the device has to be powered off first. As far as I can tell, my device isn't randomly powering itself off and automatically going into APX mode. This happens without me touching the device. When I did the power off and on today, it wasn't plugged into the computer at all. There was no recognition from the computer that the device was plugged in.
Well as of today, my EEE Transformer is dead. Will not power on the screen, Asus offers a repair of 14 business days, unacceptable.
Powering on issue
Woah...I was scared to death when mine didn't turn on the next morning that I got the device. Charged it for an hour and try to turn on again, nothing.
Holding the buttons several different ways that I know how to reset it didn't work. Finally I held the button down for more than 10 seconds. Wait a few seconds, then it powered on. Why didn't they make a hard reset since you can't remove battery!??? Hope this is just some fluke and could be updated with firmware.

Alas, mine didn't get resolved with that, computer detects it now, but no screen response. Asus tells me 14 business days to fix then says try to restore it with the Kernel Source Code. Unfortunately I can't see a way to do such from the folder and they decided to disconnect me.
There is a bug with the default lock screen that makes it so the screen doesnt power on occasionally. In order to work around this you need to disable the lock screen in the settings, or change it from the default one.
Obviously in order to do this initially it needs to be powered on and so you can see it. Therein lies your problem of course. To get around this, charge up your device so you know it has power, use the force power off method (10-12 second press of the power button), wait a few seconds (30+), then power on the device normally (5-6 second press of the power button).
If your screen doesnt come on after that, try a couple more times. It really is an RMA job if it continues to fail. If it does come on, let it boot up to the lock screen, and dont let the screen go off, keep it 'alive', unlock the device and change the lock screen in the options, to either be switched off, or to anything other than default.
This wont work for everyone, as obviously a few may actually have duff screens, but for some of you, it may just be the lock screen bug you are getting unlucky with.
Yea, I seem to have not only the lock screen bug but a defective screen. Unacceptable to me, but hey, what can I do? I've been disconnected 5 times so far, waiting on a manager and will be requesting a faster resolution than what they are offering me. (10-14 Business days is unacceptable)

I'm waiting on hold with Asus to see if they will do an Advance Repair, basically I get put on the line for the full price of the device until they declare mine broken since the return period on the Acer is 14 days at best buy. Quite outside of the repair period.

I've had it for about 3 weeks and I had it in its sleeve for a night then go to use it and it won't boot or anything.
Have tried charging it but nothing comes up what so ever.
Anyone else had this problem?
*edit*
Held power button for about 20 seconds then booted it. Booted up, sheesh I was worried !
Is this common? Does it seem hardware or software related?
Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds then wait five then try to turn it on

Alright, so it's not a problem with my transformer?
We'll see what the updates bring aha
I've had mine 6-days, died twice now, refuses to power this time at all, tried all the above
Mine done the same thing. Watching a movie last night via HDMI with power supply plugged in, turned it off before I went to bed. Now it doesn't power on, tried everything above.
Please help
Note: Not rooted, stock
Oh my god, thanks for this. I just got my transformer today, and after I installed the update, it wouldn't start up. I held the power button down for about 10 seconds and it started up.
My TF won't turn on this morning.
I tried all the suggestions above but nothing work.
I don't think my TF is in a deep sleep mode because I turned it off last night before I went to bed. It's connected to the charger the hold night.
Any other suggestions?
How do I check to see if my TF's battery still has some juice in it? (Just want to eliminate the charger as a possible cause).
Update
Called ASUS.
They told me to try press power button 10 secs, release 2 secs, and press power button 10 secs. That didn't work.
I had to hard reset the tablet (Vol-, power)
my buddy's wont seem to turn on, tried all listed above and nothing from it at all.
tried charging through usb. any suggestions?
same problem here :/. Tried all of the suggestions. I'm desperate
..
Okay if your TF does not have the SOD then maybe your screen may be dead. Happen to me. See if you could connect yout tf to a tv via hdmi. If you are getting a picture then your tf screen is dead
I think the batterie is broke cause it bootet up right now but after the lock screen appeard the screen got black. But the Problem came so suddenly.
I have the same problem ( as detailed in my thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=15475887#post15475887 ). I sent an email to ASUS, but have yet to hear back. Their support portal is terrible. The links for online chat support don't work in Chrome, Firefox or IE. I'm past the 30 day return window, anyone know the best way to contact asus about this? I'm pretty disappointed that this $400 device with no moving parts just seemed to fail (while I was using it). The worst part is, if I have to send it in, I have no way of wiping my data beforehand.
Try contacting the user "Asus_NA" (no quotes) via PM here on XDA.

Thank you thank you thank you for this thread I was just about to call asus. I'm glad I checked xda first saved me a lot of hassle. +1

did you find someone on here to contact?

[Q] Wont boot past logo

Hello,
I was using my unrooted Transformer this morning and the battery was low. It ended up shutting down due to low battery. I plugged it into the charger and now whenever I try and turn it on it shows the Eee Transformer Logo with nvidia and then dies. I have tried turning it on multiple times and still the same thing. The only thing different is the amount of time it spends on the logo before shutting off, varying from a few seconds to seven seconds. Again this is unrooted so I really have no clue whats going on. I did some looking around and could not find anything to help me so if anyone can help I would be very thankful. Thanks for reading this!
Thanks
maybe it's not getting charged up, check your charger?
Be sure to use the actual charging brick and cable that came with it, not a USB port or extension. The brick puts out 15V, not 5V.
Thanks for the quick replies. I thought that as well, I have charged it all day with the cable and brick that comes with the product. It still restarts at the same boot screen no matter the charge. >>
Try a data wipe.
-hold volume down plus the power button
-you'll see lines of words scrolling at the top left
-wait till it ask if you want to wipe data, push volume up to confirm.
-you're gonna wipe your tablet clean but it's worth a try
Allright I thought that it would fix my issues but it doesn't. I can get to the wiping user data and any indicator before cold-booting linux. Then it tells me to wait a few mins and then it tells me wipe data done and shuts off. Even so when I try and turn it on the problem still remains. It won't boot past the logo. But thanks for the response though. I sent in a repair question to asus but still no reply ill let you guys know if they fix it for me. Thanks again!
I had the same issue. After OTA update to 3.1 everything worked fine until my device ran out of power.
When i connected my device to the charger i was able to turn it on again but the boot wont go pas the asus logo. I tried wipe-data but that made the problem worse.
It said "wait a few minutes, wipe-data done" but it didnt continue with booting. After 15 minutes i rebooted the device. The device now tells me that "The previous wipe-data failed and its continueing the wipe" but then the same happens "wait a few minutes, wipe-data done".
I cant boot into recovery mode(power button + volume down) as it start to try and continue wiping the data. I am able to boot in APX mode(power button + volume up) as i see the device connect to my laptop with the APX driver
Any idea how in godsname i can fix this?
I found this on another page, with no replies after there were links posted. Could mean that the links worked out for them or that it was useless... you judge that:

Hmm and here I am having the same issue as you guys.
I even tried holding volume down and booting which gives me:
Wiping user data and any indicator before cold-booting Linux.
Please wait a few minutes...

I got a phone number for the customer service of Asus Benelux so i will be giving them a call later as soon as possible.
Hi Valor,
I just called asus support 0031-591-570290 . After telling the sympoms with my pad, they told me to send it in. For reference:
Go to www.asus.nl/rma
Within 2 to 3 hours you will receive an acknowledgement and a courier service will pick it up within 48 hours. Estimated repairtime is within 7 to 10 days.

Thats the same number they gave me. I will give them a call tomorrow. As i am unable to get it working myself. Thanks for the URL.
have you tried flashing a new ROM via nvflash? It sounds to me like the system got corrupted when it lost power..
Just wanted to let you know that Asus picked up the device tuesday morning and it came back FRIDAY morning. It has travelled from The Netherlands to Czech republic and back to The Netherlands.
I was so happy to see my good old friend working again.
The paper included in the package reported somewhat cryptic stuff what seems like a internal product code but it included MB, so I assume they replaced the whole mainboard. Thumbs up for the Asus service !

Same here pick up on monday delivery on thursday. Good service!

New Zenfone 6 won't turn back on after turning off for the first time after update.

So I was able to get my hands on a new 8gb/512gb matte black version of this. Was setting up the phone, updated to Android 10 first before transfering sms, call logs and updating apps. Went to turn off the phone to insert my SIM card and now the phone won't turn on. It vibrates every time I press the power button but then nothing. Currently it's connected to the supplied charger with the LED light lit red. It was already charging while I was using it, had about 70% battery before I switched it off. I've tried volume down + power button for 10 seconds, LED light turns off and it vibrates, and it keeps vibrating every 10 seconds when it's connected to the charger (doesn't keep vibrating when it's not connected). Can feel the area between the fingerprint reader and camera pretty hot during this. Volume up + power doesn't work either. Any ideas?
Try pressing and holding all three.
Power + vol up + vol down. Should force a reboot.

No response. Not even a vibrate.
That is unfortunate. I had this multiple times. Black screen but phone was on. Just did not react to power button or screen did not turn on. The button combo helped.
Only other idea I have is to let the battery run out. If the phone is even on in your case.
How could you tell if the phone was actually on? Could you receive calls or something?
And this was on your Zenfone 6 too?
I've left it off charge for the last 5 days now. I don't think it's gonna run flat soon, considering that it's not even on.
I think I will send it back to the seller (Taiwan!) tomorrow
The notification led was blinking. Yeah on zf6. It stopped happening a few month ago. Probably fixed in a few update. But yours seems to be a different problem.

I am not sure where, but I think when I was trying to fix my hard bricked Z6, some post said that a red LED without any other notion from the phone means that you may be able to get this running in QD-Loader mode - check this: https://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone-6-2019/how-to/qdloader-brick-t3980165
Can you get the phone to register as a COM-device?

My post on here: recognised as an Android ADB Interface but I can't do an adb reboot as "device not found"

Thanks for this. I actually saw this a few days ago but was reluctant to try as I'm worried it might void the warranty.

Try again the Power + vol up + vol down combo, but hold it 30 secs. If still does not reboot, get worried...

I did hold them for 1 minute and no response before. Is there a specific order which they should be pressed and held?
No, no order. Just all pressed together at once. I think you should return the phone. Last year there was a similar issue with an update and many phones had to be returned, but it was solved.
If the combo don't reboot the phone I would return it. I don't want to give them excuses not to honor the guarantee.

It was never solved. It's still happening even to new ASUS phones.
To OP: Return the phone immediately. Your mobo is 95% dead. It's a hardware issue so trying to fix that is not worth losing the warranty.

Yeah so weird as I only did an OTA firmware update from the shipped Android 9 to Android 10. It installed successfully and rebooted once. But only died once I shut it down. Was there a thread about it?

Yeah it actually just got back to Taiwan yesterday. Seller is being annoying though and not wanting to send me a replacement. But instead wanting to refund me and then asking me to repurchase (at a potentially higher price like seriously -_-).
Such a hassle.

might be you received damaged Cell because I faced the same issue when I bought LG G4 Cell, Seller told it was new but after I sent to Service Center they told its repaired cell and not new, it was motherboard issue, so might be you also picked up cell like that, other I never faced any problem in Asus 6z since I bought last year

They refunded me and couldn't get stock of a new one. The repair centre apparently can't fix it either lol.
Anyway it's a blessing in disguise as I'm gonna buy the Zenfone 7 or 7 Pro now.

Yes..Nice Choice, Hope Asus 7 Series Price not like onePlus & others
Same thing just happened to my wife's phone. She received an OTA update from ASUS which resulted in her phone rebooting itself during the night and getting stuck at the ASUS splash screen totally unresponsive.
I waited for the battery to die and after charging the phone powered up. It lasted 12 hours before suddenly shutting itself down when the wife was changing settings to pull the time from the network.
Now dead as a brick. Charge light no longer lights. Totally unresponsive. No amount of power button/volume button combination or time will do anything to make it work again.
Pretty pissed off as it was purchased early Sep last year and has already been sent back to ASUS in Taiwan for the USB charge port board replacement. Now 1 yr and 17 days old.
I do not know what to do now except push for a repair under warranty.
Nearly on the day when my warranty went out the ZenFone did it to.Used Bluetooth to my headphones and suddenly it went dead for good. Was reading that others on the net had the same problem and guess its a major built in fault on a rather expensive phone when i bought it. Got a new phone of a different brand and will for sure never return to any Asus phones when quality aint a strong word for that brand. Over and out.
Wow. I was looking at these phones but there are issues it seems.
Rule #1 if your OS is fast, stable and fulfilling its mission...
Do Not Update!
This goes double for carrier phones. AT&T for example can wreck your user experience with their later updates.
With Pie and above security isn't an issue unless you do something stupid.
Don't get sucker in by scare hype.
Always redundantly backup critical data to at least 2 hdds and always be ready to reload. Reload if you can't resolve a malware issue asap. Cover your ass...ets
