If you have a problem with someone keep it between yourselves. You can argue with people all you want over pm.
Dev threads are for dev related materials. This means critiques, error reporting, LOGS, and relivent info. What this does not include is arguing with people. Also posts that comment to the op, saying I'm not flashing this because... please no.
Also replying to a question with this belongs here wastes space. If you don't know don't reply. If you do, answer it or post a link to a thread with the answer and then say this belongs here. We don't need 3 this belongs here to every question before someone has the heart to answer it. You're adding to the mess.
Also please read ravers post clarifying the sections. The community is becoming way too whiny and every thread is becoming a flame war.

You're absolutely correct. I, for one, have responded to posts on dev threads that I shouldn't have. No disrespect was meant to the dev it's just seeing certain posts disrespecting the op angered me to the point of responding. I will be more than happy to go back and delete it if I am able. At the very least I will edit.
Edited my post in dev thread.

and once upon a time i posted this

so you could link this thread if you like
This is addressing a different issue. The main thing here, we are a community. We all want basically the same things. We don't want to read through the flaming of other users and posting counterproductive things. Yes people will post questions in the wrong sections, etc, but it doesn't warrant 5 posts complaining about it's misplacement when it would take one to clarify and inform him KINDLY it's in the wrong place for future posts. Yes that search feature is nice, and things are crowded, but people make mistakes. We need to be a community and treat eachother with respect instead of whining and complaining at everyone.
if anyone has issues, they can use my guide thread to post them in

Answers from the mods would be nice. Because the community is creating rules and expecting people to know them in advance. The general rules are basic and dont cover a lot of what people like to claim is rules and whatnot.
yeah, this was more meant to address the people just generally being a%$es. Rules are nice and all, but we don't all need to police them, especially if it means posting 5 threads policing them.

Plenty. Answer the question and direct them to the right place, especially if it only takes one post to answer. If it'd take more link them to a more relivent thread.
For every one noob asking a question in the wrong place we have 5 "experts" repeating this goes here wasting more space than it'd take to answer.

FB I don't plan on following others' actions. And I am not saying what he said in the OP doesn't have merit. However, it seems after he posted this he has been on a posting spree in the dev section... adding to the clutter he denounced in this post. Hell he even accidentally started thread today in the dev section talking about starting a Wiki...
I don't know how me joining the IRC channel will benefit you guys or help. I hope to help by answering noob questions so you guys don't have to. We are going to have to do hand holding whether we want to or not... I am resigned to that fact... therefore, I do my best to handle as many those requests as possible.
....As the world turns (starting to look like a soap)
As lumin30 will tell you we have had our fair number of disagreements here, but I totally agree with him. This is a somewhat relevant post, but it looks more towards the lines of "Do as I say not as I do" post. There are plenty of "This is what your supposed to do" threads like this ----->
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1235789
And if this is what the OP is referring to as "especially if it means posting 5 threads policing them."
then please look at date i wrote it (26 aug 2011). If mistaken on what your talking about then I apologize.
Just seems to me that the very thing you are preaching is being done by you.
I'm not trying to spark arguments here.
What I'm mostly saying is cut some people some slack. While it's a good thing to inform people where things should go, that doesn't mean when someone posts something in the wrong thread things only need to be said once, and if it's a simple answer just answer it and inform them it should be in a different section.
Read through some of the old threads especially Raver's roms, and yes some people are dumb reporting bugs that are in the op, or have already been reported, and not providing logs to help. That doesn't mean we need 5 people to reply to the post saying this has already been reported or this belongs in Q&A.
I'm simply saying be friendly. The overall activity of the community has gotten way too hostile. Noobs will be noobs, not that I approve of it, that doesn't mean our older members have to be dicks.
Also my post earlier was a legitimate mistake as I just opened the browser to make the post and didn't notice what section I was in. And As for the wiki I do intend to do it as I feel there is too much to put on one page with sub-pages, and that navigation wise it will make things more friendly for noobs to find information easily with a full FAQ, and wiki pages with full descriptions of roms, how to flash them, and known bugs, as things tend to get lost in the forums. I'm simply working to help out the little guys. We all had a time we were noobs too, just some are dumber than others.

I see there isn't a suggestion section under the captivate and decided to post here so the developers are likely to see it. Though maybe the mods can implement it as well.
I was thinking that since us noobs can never find the questions that have been asked and answered do to the staggering number of posts in some of these threads; could download threads be locked and stickied but have a link to a Q&A thread on the topic, and a separate discussion thread that is labeled for posting by devs only? I know this is more threads and maybe I'm speaking nonsense but I see a lot of people get blown off, or better yet someone answers them only to tell them to search for the answer or just put people down. Like if you are gonna take the time and space on the board to say something to someone you can't give a link and a page number.
I know you guys are super helpful, but the board is hard to navigate because of the huge number of posts, I think a Q&A topic for each download topic with a link would keep the noobs out of your hair and questions could be answered by intermediate users and not make it hard for the busy devs to communicate amongst themselves.
What do you think?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Wrong section. This section is for develpment. Period.
I vote no. 90% of the time the first post is the info/download information, and the rest of the post is the "Q&A" section you want. And the other 10% of the time the information isn't in the first post because noobs aren't going to read an entire thread and the "release" is still in "oh crap this may break stuff".
I just think its cluttered and the lay person can't navigate and the knowledgeable people are unwilling to answer the same questions too many times (understandable).
My next suggestion is to have a suggestion section.

If people used the search function, they would find answers to already asked questions. Having stickie Q/A stuff to correspond to Dev stuff sounds nice, but no one will look for it - they don't look now and search works very well.
I thought I was speaking sense but obviously its not being received.
You don't need to sticky the qa just link to it and people will find it.
Searching is unreliable because that means the phrasing needs to be close.
But I'll just let this die.

If your only plausible contribution to this forum is to tell people to post in the correct thread, DON'T.
If you are not a Dev, or a mod, and you get the urge to tell someone they posted in the incorrect thread, DON'T (those groups are MORE than capable of doing it themselves).
If you have the urge to do anything but be helpful and kind to your fellow XDA members, and cannot control yourself, FIND A NEW HAPPY HOME.
If people were HALF as LIGHTNING fast to help as they are to chastise someone for posting in the wrong damned place this would be a MUCH better place to get help.
I can pretty sure guarantee no one would be hesitant to ask for it, LIKE THEY ARE NOW.

There. I fixed the flaws in your post.
I do agree though. Don't post that someone's thread is in the wrong forum, it doesn't help in any way. Just let us mods know, so we can move them.
Thanks for pointing this out Morkai Almandragon, people should be aware of this.
I agree. People should be nicer. I've seen plenty get angry at noobs or just people not paying attention. At the same time, I have also seen people jump on someone, accusing them of being hateful to a noob when they really weren't (person was just overreacting such as here). Niceness goes down both sides of the aisle.
In short, think about what the person was thinking before you reply to them if you think they are in fault about something. I can save lots of ranting/off topic derailing.
I completly agree.
I come from the x10 forums and the behavior over there has become absolutely disgusting over the past few months.
Its really starting to get annoying, every second thread becomes a flame war.
People need to remember what XDA-Developers is about, because last time I checked, it was about discussing mobile devices and expanding their capabilities, not about using terrible language and abusing others. What is this, an iPhone forum? (Sarcasm)

Do you disagree with what I said Mike?
Quite frankly I am sick of watching dev's leave, and watching new people not ask questions because they fear someone will chew them out for miss stepping.
If someoen posts to the dev section on accadent it takes about 2 minutes for someone to post that they were not in the right forum... how long is the average wait to get help?
Maybe I have the world back wards, but it seems to me we should be quicker to help than to chastise.

Mike you are missing the point completely.
I am not posting this in a thread that someone ELSE posted asking for help.
I am not making someone who came here looking for help FEEL LIKE CRAP.
I am not cluttering up a post that may very likely get found in a search by someone else with the same problem as the original poster.
While a post by someone with a problem may very well be in the wrong place, or may very well be EASILY answered with a search, when the only replies are chastising them for such, future people with the same problem have the joy of sifting through every post just like it, where people asked the same questions they have, only to have never been answered.
It is one thing to answer someones thread with a helpful comment, and mention they should check the forum rules, or post in the right place, or explain the search function. This sort of thing is helpful and productive within the community.
What I complain about in the first post is not helpful and in fact causes our community to erode.
I do not really see anything hypocritical here at all.

Yep. Can't say how many times I've mentioned that in threads... I don't think this thread needs to go any further.
This is nothing new for a lot of us but since we got ics roms there have been a lot of noobs. DO NOT ASK QUESTIONS IN THE DEV THREADS. There are q&a threads for every rom so post your questions there and don't post the same question over and over. The only reason to post in the dev thread is to report bugs. Don't take this the wrong way anyone but its getting out of hand and I thought it needed to be addressed.

A good rule of thumb is ask the question once. If a answer is not given within a day bump your question dont ask again.
If your not sure what bumping a post is I will explain. You quote your previous post that has the unanswered question. If more than one was asked then just edit out the answered questions. It would look something like this.

These are all true. So I won't quote anyone specifically. I know in the last few days you've seen me post a bit, but there are weeks/months where I don't post at all. I'm not always watching the forum and have A LIFE TO LIVE (I'm sure you do to ).
A few of you guys are my ifriends and iassociates. And I like helping out, its in my nature. But as you see, I ask in my OPs that people follow a few of my own rules. And as you can tell, when my rules are broken I lock my threads. Because I don't need to walk away from my computer to go hang out with my daughter and come back to a thread full of off topic garbage that you guys could have been chatting on IRC or on PM.
It used to be in my signature, maybe I should add it again.
How to ask questions the smart way, by Eric S. Raymond and Rick Moen.

Hey! So recently I have seen a rather large influx of people doing dumb things without first searching! So far I've encountered a couple people who are upset they bricked their phones, even though a warning was put out to not fkz back from ICS. I have also seen many people posting in the dev section just asking for help. YOU SHOULD ONLY POST IN THE DEV SECTION ONLY IF YOU MADE SOMETHING (ie. a ROM). Please don't post there asking for help or posting screenshots. Sorry but this has been pissing me of a little lately.
PLEASE try to keep this forum clean, and make the job for our mods easier!
From now on, we need to just start directing people to my sticky in these situations, and not post any help until they follow the rules.
Here is my sticky:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1778853
Then report them to the MODS, I have been told by both of our mods that they are on the developers sides and try to helps us out with any of these type of things, since this is a site really for developers and a way for us to get our work out to the public, so to speak.
Thanks! I shall do that. It's just been pissing me off that everyday new threads would come up about people bricking their phones. And they would pop up in the dev section too!

Yeah I feel your pain, and that is why I posted the sticky, I was seeing these things even before the bricks started. It has gotten so out of hand here, even with all the "when is ICS coming" new threads 2 or three a day. Heck now we have the leak and it not good enough, so they brick their phone even after all the warnings... I am starting to think that no one reads anything on here, and just posts a new thread for whatever they want to.
Jim, et. al.,
Since I have been traveling like a freaking gypsy for work these last two weeks, with another two more ahead of me, I was unable to PM all the Senior Members here with what you and I discussed last week. In lieu of all that, I'll take it upon myself to do what I had intended last week right here.
Because people (n00bs, primarily) can't search or post questions or concerns in threads that have already been established for certain topics -ICS leak topics mostly, I'm calling all Members and Senior Members together for this:
If we continue to see a handful of new threads made for topics already in discussion, we need ONLY to reply with the link to Jim's sticky, as well as the existing thread(s) that relate to new 'extraneous' ones. Nothing else, no replies to entertain any quandaries or concerns.
This was my concern with the leak coning out, and it has been substantiated with several threads posted that are clogging up this forum. I cannot stress enough the imperativeness of SEARCHING BEFORE POSTING NEW THREADS, and have already made reports to the moderators of people not following the rules. I'm doing that with the risk of looking like a total prick, but also with the hopes that people here will get the picture.
So, if we all join forces and take these threads with the same approach, it might just work. Albeit, there will always be those who will insist on being dumber than a bag if smashed a**holes, we still may get lucky and see some improvement...

I hate to seem like we're all "ganging up" on these guys, but it really has gotten way out of hand. So, n00bs and Junior Members (and even Members) if/when you read this, understand where we are all coming from. This isn't "my" forum or "your" forum, its "our" forum, and there are rules in place for everyone's benefit. Since the ICS leak, we've gotten more than a little frustrated with people wildly avoiding heeded caution, and squawking about the forum with a desperate cry for help by posting new (needless) threads. You'll get the very same degree of help if you post correctly, and avoid being set on fire...

I would think that commenting to the OP, and reporting it would be the most effective. Otherwise the OP might not realize why it was moved (do they get notified if their thread is moved and why? I actually don't know).
Not that it has to be a "smart comment", but just to tell the person why its wrong. Like seeing someone drive the wrong way down a one-way street: Its just better for them and everyone around them, if you tell them what they are doing is wrong. It doesn't make you a wannabe cop.
