Force roam sensation??? - HTC Sensation

Hello all, i have an HTC sensation and would really like to get out of my contract without paying ETF, i am going studying aboard withing the next 4 months and my contract is not up till another year and a half,
I was following this slickdeals thread about cancelling with t-mobile and one of the steps states you can get out of contract if you are constantly roaming,
http://slickdeals.net/f/3981466-Cancel-T-Mobile-Contract-ETF-free?
is there any way i can force my phone to roam on att's towers? any help is apprecaited
I know there was a way to do this on my old evo and the ATT speeds where phenominal lol

You don't need to do that. If you can prove that you are going to be in a place without normal coverage, aka, you are leaving the country, they will cancel your contract for free, though if you still owe on the price of the phone, you still have to pay for that no matter what.
Using XDA premium, you should be too!

another SIM would imply you are paying some other carrier ?!? (which defeats the purpose)
I'd also like to know how you force a GSM phone on to a different network.. ie. when I search for network operators, I might see Tmobile and AT&T, but I can't get it to use AT&T even when its available..
Your SIM card does not allow a connection to this network

You can pick your carrier in the network settings but if roaming is not allowed in your area, you won't be able to connect. Otherwise your sim will still default you back to tmo. I know back in the day you could alter the priorities. Don't know how to do that on android. Might be blocked at the sim level.

[Q] HTC Maps on MyTouch 4G?

So I want to use a navigation app on the MyTouch 4G without using any data. If I'm not mistaken, the Google Navigation app uses data to download the map of your current location. The new HTC Sense maps (again if I'm not mistaken) are saved on the phone and don't use data. So my question is if I can get the HTC maps on the MyTouch 4g (specifically without having to root the phone and flash the new Sense rom onto it)?
What's the point of using a mthd without data? Really just defeats the purpose of having this kinda phone if you ask me... Just my opinion though

what you were sayin' ...? ))
But, srsly, I see were you coming from....I would rather store my maps on SD so it can be cached faster, especially for "out of 3G/4G range" towns
Its not that I don't want to use data with the phone, I do. Its just that I am considering switching to the cheaper limited data plans that T-Mobile will roll out in the near future. So thats why not using data for the nav would be great.

The "limited" data plan will only work with certain phones. The mt4g will be a premium device that will require the unlimited data plan.

Yeah but I'm using a G1, so I can just use that to get the new data plan, then I will buy the MyTouch 4G off-contract and swap the sim.

Tricky fellow! LOL! J/K
Sounds like a good idea.
If you're trying to avoid getting the unlimited plan by pretending you're still using your G1, it won't work. They have a database of all the IMEI #s and the IMEI of the phone you're using gets transmitted, so they can see what you're using.
Back on AT&T, I bought a used iPhone (original model) and spoofed the IMEI to avoid having to pay for the iPhone data plan. Not sure if you can do this on Android.
You can see what I'm talking about by going to your T-Mobile account online and somewhere it should say which phone you're using. If you switch to another T-Mobile phone, it'll change. Carriers only have the IMEI #s of the phones that are branded by them. So if you put your T-Mobile SIM in an AT&T or unlocked, unbranded phone, it wouldn't show that phone under your account.

All of the above is true... Sold phones for years at radioshack...
Well it doesn't matter anyway because the new data plans will be available for all phones. From the leaked(?) document: "T-Mobile will respond to our customers' needs by introducing a new low-cost $10/$15 200 MB Web feature that can be added to any device."

Not that it matters (see my previous post), but even when they detect someone switches phones, can they really just alter your data plan without asking your permission?
The way AT&T did it, they would send you an automated text first a number of times. Then they'd add it. If it's stated in the TOS then they can do it. See if you can call them up and find a nice rep who'll try and keep it for you though.

Just answer the question
Can someone just answer his question without requiring his motives?
There's other people with legitimate reasons to do the same. What if you are in an area that has bad data reception? What if you wanted to use navigation outside of the city?
There's been plenty of times that I couldn't use Navi because of poor reception.
Use the navigon app it is now downloadable from the market. Maps are stored on the phone.

Would someone with an LTE mifi be willing to try this?

Take the SIM card out of the Thunderbolt and put it into the MIFI/Samsung Hotspot device, and see if you still get LTE connection from the MIFI/Samsung device? I would like to buy one of those things but only if I can get unlimited data with it.
Wont work. Lte =/= GSM. It uses dual authentication using your unique imei (device id). Also: it will recognize the device_type as an aircard.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
mcmillian is correct as you can not use the $30 unlimited data in an aircard, Verizon would see the device ID and turn off your data... however to add a couple additional pennies on the topic...
you can use your LTE sim card in ANY LTE device. I've tried it with other Thunderbolt (hmm, my phone replacement, ugh) and it worked flawlessly. I really do miss that about GSM carriers as i would take the card out of my nice phone, and put it in a crappy prepaid phone when i went to the beach, or Six Flags. If it fell out or got lost.... oh well!

Hmm if it worked in other thunderbolts I think it's definitely worth a shot in the aircard. I'm less concerned about Verizon seeing it and shutting it down at some later point... I know how big companies work and it would likely go unchecked for years before they decide to care enough.
I did this exact thing and it billed me for $1562 in mb usage on this pay months bill. You should definitely try it

It doesn't go unchecked for years, it registers the MiFi to that line the second you put the SIM in and puts a compatible data feature on the line automatically. So you won't magically get unlimited data they will just convert the plan automatically.
For what its worth, I currently work at VZW and here is what our intranet says regarding moving a 4G LTE sim from a phone to a modem and vice versa.
4G SIM Change from USB to Smartphone
---------------------------------------
Customers with existing USBs who take the SIM out of the USB and place it into a 4G Smartphone will be able to place voice calls and will be charged the $0.25 per minute rate.
A change will be going into place by 03/22/2011 that will place a voice block on all new USB consumer and enterprise customers and all embedded base enterprise customers.
In addition, a change will be going in place on 04/17/2011 which will allow us to go back and put the block on the existing customer base.
Once the block is in place, users will not be able to place voice calls when they swap the SIMs unless they switch to an applicable voice/data plan.
4G SIM Change from Smartphone to USB
---------------------------------------
Customers who purchase a SIM with a 4G Smartphone and have voice and data, will be able to remove the SIM and place it in a 4G USB.
Data usage on the USB would continue to be billed according the data plan on the Smartphone (including unlimited).
Customers would continue to pay for voice as per the terms of their agreement.

PEOPLE... I've worked for a huge Verizon retailer for five years. On my personal plan I have a Thunderbolt and I took my sim out and put it in a Samsung LTE Mifi. I got billed for $1,562 in MB overage and not only did it not automatically change my calling plan to a broadband data plan, but it kept my $29.99 unlimited days feature on there and still billed me $1.99/mb. $1,562 in data charges. This is your warning, don't try it. They won't credit it for me either.

Nice try, Verizon guy.
Edit: On the off chance that this is real and you're not just seeking attention, seriously do not pay that bill. A phone company cannot sign you up for a plan (contract) of their choosing and bill you outrageous sums. The only contract you signed was for unlimited data. Unless they have your signature on a document saying that you agreed to pay $1.99/mb for something, then you do not have to pay it. If they are accusing you of something illegal, which would be ridiculous, then only a court can make a judgement against you.

I'm not a "Verizon guy," I work for a retailer, not corporate Verizon. I was just offering a warning of what happened on the 10th when I received my bill. And they won't credit me because I contract with them as an indirect agent and as I activated it on my own acct I should have "known better." Do what you want, I was just trying to offer some advice to the OP.

I have a Thunderbolt and a Pantech USB modem. I took the SIM from my phone, put it in the USB stick, and it worked no problems....
I did this a couple months ago just cause I was wondering if it worked. I didn't leave my phone's Sim in the USB for a long time, just surfed the internet that evening long enough to see that it worked in case I wanted to use the unlimited data in the USB stick to download a movie or something and not use my 5G limit of the broadband plan.
I did not see any additional charges on my bill, but like I said, I only had it in there for one evening.

Swapping services

So I had the Inspire 4G on AT&T and my girlfriend became an ex and now I don't have service. I was wondering if I can swap the ROM to a Verizon ROM and run it on their network. Please help.
Short answer, no. The long answer has to do with radio frequencies and technology used. For voice and 2G data you could use T-mobile. You may have a regional service provider option also. I do not know what is available in your area.
No you can't. ATT is gsm and Verizon is cdma. You could use it on tmobile if its unlocked but will only get edge speeds.

Your best option is to sell the phone now, while its hot and get some good money off of it and buy another phone.
I personally am still pretty new to rooting and all but doesn't verizon have sim cards for their world phones?
Thanks for the information, I didn't think I would be able to. It is rooted but I need to do a complete wipe on the phone and return it to stock with root. Thanks for the help and hopefully I will be able to sell this with some scuffs on it. Maybe just try for $100 rooted.
or unlock it and use simple mobile... unlimited everything for like 60 bucks a month, ( and 3g ) no contract. but check coverage.. etc....
Why not do the most simple thing get a pay as you go phone. Swap the sim into the inspire. $50 unlimited everything. Don't try telling me it wont work either. I have used two different iphones and a blackberry on pay as you go. And dont try the different sim thing either. When I went contract they had me use the same sim. Just go get a cheap pay as you go phone register it swap the sim and try it out.
Buddy 3g won't work. The frequency bands are not compatible with tmkbile(simple mobile). Unless you got Att or a side branch that runs off at towers and signal, you will ONLY get Edge speeds end of story. Don't proven using tmobile and simple mobile.

Ok I tried to keep this nice but sense you you want to get rude about it. Let me let you in on a little secret, for the past few months att has been locking the prepaid sim cards to the phone by IMEI they are activated on for 6 months. The only way to have it unlocked is by calling them to get it unlocked in which case they want the imei of the new phone. They have also implamented the IMEI scan they do for the contract lines. So even if you have an older sim card that is not locked, After a while then will notice and data will stop working. Now How do I know this you ask? I just spent the last year as the Store manager for a local ATT retail store. So the next time you decide to be rude, you might want to take a min and think that maybe, just maybe you dont have all the facts.
And I do stand corrected on the pay-per use data. That was what it did before they started blocking it.

I don't have exact answers per se, but as an AT&T Mobility employee I have some advice and some warnings.
Advice: It would be much better to get a "4G" SIM instead of the GoPhone one, just in case this causes any issues.
When you go activate the SIM, take another, non-smartphone, phone with you and say that that's what you will use. We will put the non-smartphone IMEI in the system and it will allow you to get the $50 unlimited talk, text, and web.
Once you have the "4G" SIM activated, and the non-smartphone IMEI registered, put the SIM in the Inspire. Now, the seemingly difficult part.
Warning: You MUST find the APN settings for our feature phones somewhere, if you can't, I will try to find them for you. The reasoning behind this is that more then likely the "web" included on the $50 package is only one the feature phone APN, instead of the smartphone one.
Secondly, don't be surprised if one day you stop having internet connectivity. As we do with our postpaid customers, we also have a system for prepaid that sweeps every IMEI used and applies (or in your case, removes) the appropriate data packages.
I know that our prepaid data packages are a ripoff, but this is one way to do it, if only temporarily.
P.S. Where did you hear it would only be EDGE? That seems incorrect to me.

So if I am understanding this right, the phone must be rooted, and the APN needs to be changed to reflect a featured phone data plan instead of the smartphone data plan that the droid is expecting to use. Along with using a 4G simcard, that should be it right? The apn settings are all over the internet, i just read them, its like wap.cingular.com or something, but whats this sweeping system you speak of, does it compare the sim card over the air to the imei its 'registered with' opposed to the imei of the phone its installed in?

It will work just fine stock. I have been running prepaid for awhile now and have not had a single issue. The apns will set on their own to the proper ones once you insert your similar card.
And they are right att dies sweep the IMEI but it doesn't matter as I gave reps my IMEI when I got the inspire and swapped my account from my old captivate. Also I font use a data plan as I am normally around wifi at all times. The only backdraw is if you have less then $5 on your account the data won't connect. ATT can't stop you from having any phone you want on prepaid. They tried with the IPhone and a lawsuite ended that.

Except, data speeds are kinda slow and the "Unlimited Data" on the $60/Mo plan is actually capped at 3GB..
so what happens after you reach the "cap"

Infuse owner here asking this for a friend. Can a inspire be unlocked to work with a att gophone simcard? If so are there any data limitations? Thanks

Im actually using an Inspire via GoPhone. I have been for a few months. I just went to a local att store and simply bought a simcard, some airtime, and activated that sim card, popped it in and voila! I dont recommend buying a cheap GoPhone and using the sim out of that because recently, att decide to start locking the sim that comes with that phone to that specific phone. I made that mistake the first time and found it out the hard way.
I only have the $25/mo plan and i buy a $25 data package when needed. I dont use a lot of data, since I have wifi available most of the time.

Works good with prepaid just had to put apn in manually to get data working other than that perfect .

[Q] Grandfathered Plan on LTE?

Hey guys, I know that there was another thread on this previously, but there was no answer. I have an old Sim (from around 2008) and just purchased a Skyrocket. I tried using the APN for the LTE, but didnt recieve any internet signal at all. I am currently using the HSPA+, but I was wondering if you guys had any ideas on what could be causing the problem. Thanks in advance.
Call att they will add the right plan...

...you're using a SIM from 2008?
You need a new SIM dude.
Yes, I am actually an old employee and they never took away my plan, so I have avoided going into an ATT store or calling them for about 3 years. lol. What is the difference between an LTE sim and another one? I thought that they just got smaller.
I was in the same boat as you earlier this week. I was still using the same sim for probably the past 4-5 years.
I had to first go get a new LTE sim from the AT&T store. Mine was free although I've heard some places try and charge you.
Next I had to call up 611 and have them change my data plan which was previously listed as "Blackberry Personal Unlimited" <--LOL and switch it over to one of the new LTE unlimited plans.
Took about 5 mins on the phone with the ATT rep and I had LTE service. Congrats on the phone! I've had mine for less than a week and am loving it!
Hey any of you guys think Best Buy would give you a free sim?
Corporate AT&T stores (from my experience) give you free SIMS....Authorized Retailers usually try and charge you.
I have never had a problem with my local AT&T Corporate store, it's the only one I will go to....I never go to an Authorized Retailer.
I really only go to BB because of the insurance being 9.99 a month

Call AT&T and have them provision your line with the LTE plan, there's a specific plan that needs to be added so that your phone will connect to the LTE towers.
I came from an iPhone 3GS. I was allowed to keep my unlimited data plan (which doesn't exist anymore for new people) and got my SIM for free. I did this at a retail store. I say just go in. Verify they aren't going to do anything you don't like before you give them your account info.

You may have to perform what's called an IVR acceptance. I'm recently separated from the company but I consider myself a decent expert on the processes. Did you order the phone from online/call center? If so, when AT&T sends the phone, due to you not being able to PHYSICALLY sign a contract when you upgrade/activate, etc., they place this feature on your account until you dial *862 (from the CURRENT, not new, phone) and accept the terms. You'll need the Billing Zip, Account Holder's Last 4, and the phone # of course. It's all automated. Try that out and THEN insert the new SIM in the SR. It amazed me how many customers would call CARE or go to a store and get stuck for hours because the "rep" thought it was a technical issue when it's really a 2 minute process.

I'm assuming you just attempted to just swap the SIM into the LTE SR and keep it rolling. They're correct when they say you need a new SIM. There's a coding to the network that older (especially 2008) SIM cards won't accept because the network hadn't been constructed @ the time. You will ALSO need an LTE data plan on the account so make sure you've done that as well.
Thanks for all the help guys. I think I am going to give them a call and switch it to a new sim to see if that would work. I have to switch phones first, lol. My plan is super cheap right now, and I got the phone at a steal at 340. My sim card is old as hell, and I will see if it will work without me having to pay more for my old employee plan. I hope they dont ask me for my supervisor's name. Wish me luck.

Do you have the data feature as stand-alone or integrated into the rate plan itself? Some school districts did it that way. 99% of us have stand-alone. If that's the case, it shouldn't affect your current stasis.
Skyrocket CM7 O/C +
Its the one that has it all integrated into the single plan. Here is the text from the plan.

Wow. Rather unique plan you have there. Looks like you have a grandfathered plan that isn't for smartphones. That being the case, outside of the iPhone 2g trick, you're stuck with capped data options.

Someone else a RadioShack employee too? Been gone since mid-08 and am also still on the same plan. I was looking at finally upgrading my Touch Pro 2 and was curious about the data. Looks like I'm pretty much stuck considering I don't want to lose my $25/month plan.
unlimted
I was able to keep unlimited grandfathered data with 4g, but no matter what i did, or who i talked to, LTE would take it away, so i said keep the 4g, im using a skyrocket, and i dont get lte in my area for now, so its kind of ok ( except for travel)
but i had to do this all on the phone with an att rep, nothing was doable online.
hope this helps someone.
