[Q] atrix 2.3.6 root - General Questions and Answers

best way to root a atrix 4g (att) running 2.3.6

You'll need to unlock the bootloader and proceed from there. You can do it the Pudding way (messy), but I also found this over in the Atrix section, which looks far simpler. It will take you back to 2.3.4, but if your bootloader isn't unlocked then you'll have to do that anyway
If your bootloader is already unlocked, use the new version of SuperOneClick with the Motorola exploit (link in my sig). It works a treat
Good luck!

what?! i rooted my old atrix running 2.3.4 (i sent it in for replacement ) so this is my new one.... i cant just type in codes? like i did last time?

Is the bootloader unlocked on your new unit?
Correction: Times have changed since I did it last, have a look here.
Apologies for the confusion.

not as far as i know as i was able to update from 2.3.4 to 2.3.6 and its running all stock. ( i should mention the only phone i have ever modded was my old backflip ) and i rooted my old atrix but i have read that the bootloader unlock is complicated so i never did that. im lookign at getting CM9 ICS by joker or waiting till Q3 for ics official.... but not sure.

[Q] Motorola Atrix updating

Hi folks, Im an atrix owner in uk on the orange network. Ive been waiting for this GB update but decided to go along the unlocking route. I have rooted using gingerbreak, and have just unlocked the bootloader using RSD lite and IHOP Bell. The phone itself displays unlocked on the boot screen, so all seems well. But now Im stuck with only 300mb of ram. I have seen that its possible to load ORFR234-system.img so that I can enjoy the GB goodness. Ive downloaded the ORFR234 but the question is How do I get it on to my phone? The worst thing is that I managed to lose the guide that I was following, grrr. If there's anyone out there in XDA land who can help me, I would be sooooooo grateful and buy ya a beer lol. Many thanks

[Q] Options for OTA 2.3.6 UNROOTED

Hi! As you can probably tell, I'm new to the forums... I've read XDA tons, but never posted. I just got an Atrix 2 today (YAY), but unfortunately the salesman in the AT&T store updated the phone to 2.3.6 "for me." After hours of trying and reading, it seems there is no root for 2.3.6... Is my only option to wait for a 2.3.6 exploit or is there some way for me to roll back to 2.3.5?
Honestly, the only reason I want to root right now is for the Titanium Backup I made of my old LG Thrill.
Motorola Atrix 4G (2 of them- rooted)
LG Thrill 4G (rooted)
Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket
Motorola Atrix 2

Here is the instructions to flash the 2.3.5 fxz (scroll down a bit). However since you're on 2.3.6 you'll need to make sure that you follow these directions (close to the bottom) as well.

There is one way but it involves editing 2.3.5 fkz files, and if done incorrectly can soft-brick you phone, the mod can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20987662&postcount=102 ^What he said
Thanks, that's really helpful! I should have just asked from the beginning.
Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but my computer can't find drivers for fastboot mode. I've installed all of Motorola's drivers and restarted both my phone and the computer numerous times.
I was able to find just the drivers only! This installer is fantastic. If there are any problems with drivers just tell it to do a "clean and reinstall"

[Q] Will this root or brick my phone?

Hi, I have a SGH-i727r (Not the Skyrocket, its the Canadian rogers variant) running on the stock 4.0.4 ROM from rogers, and i was thinking about rooting my phone recently, and I have found this method,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1340526
but I am not sure if it will work on 4.0.4 since it only says 2.3.5 and 2.3.6
some other people on the forum seems to claim it works, but I never saw a result posted for the version & model of my phone.
By the way, if this doesn't work, is there a method that would, or simply an easier method such as SuperOneClick?
Thanks in advance
The easiest way is probably to install the modified room
They are always rooted out
Thanks but can you go into detail on how it works?
Sorry, I am new here

There's no bootloader unlock for no one.
Why do you want to unlock your bootloader if there's no room that requires other kernel?
^+1. And there is no need for the bootloader to be unlocked to flash the roms in our dev section.! Just follow the instructions there!

i have 3 question
Q1-i doidnt under stand ur point becoz befor e posting this thread i googled for custom rom or cm10 & i found this on a motorola official discussion
(if u google "ics or bootloader unlock on atrix 2" then its 3rd option)
"Question Title:
ICS Update or Unlock Bootloader
Comment:
I have brought Brand new Motorola Atrix 2 (Indian Version and not US AT&T model) last month hoping it will be getting ICS update, but now my Skyrocket got updated to ics and Updated my SGS I9000 to JellyBean using CM10. Being such a capable device Atrix 2 is still running on 2.3.6 (Out of Box), which is also having network connectivity issue here in India. I now feel it was a mistake buying a Motorola Atrix2 and could have bought Sony Xperia P which is in same price bracket which is getting update much faster.
If Motorola can`t update Atrix2 to stable ICS, i would like them to unlock bootloader for same as there are many developers around who can create custom ROMS (ICS or even JB) much stable & faster than Motorola team.
To make matter worse yesterday news came out that Motorola are shutting down operations in Asia Pacific. I do hope they can provide us with either a stable ICS update or Unlock the bootloader.
"
so plz reply is it now nessecary to unlock bootloader for custom rom or cm10, as i like xda dev work becoz of
a-no company app
b-overclock Facility
Q2-secondly will i b able overclock in custom rom or cm10 (as my boot loader will b locked, will it let me over clock in cm10 or custum rom)
Q3-there r kernel avalible for over clocking but when i zip instal them by CMW they show no effect(may b becoz of bootloader not been unlocked)
so plz help me overclock becoz this device with overclock is an gr8 device
so plz helpppppppppppppppp

First, forget about unlocking the bootloader. We don't need to unlock it to install the roms that we have in the developers sections.
Secondly, we have stable ics, and now, finally, we have a stable Jellybean for international phones.
But, i'm going to respond your questions in order.
1: The info that are you reading, is ooooold. If you want stable ICS, check this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1934874
Those are for international Atrix 2. It means, that ones they were not bought in AT&T.
And, if you have international atrix 2, you can choose jellybean, too
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2092107
2: Yes, you have to flash 2 .zip's files into the custom recovery.
I don't know too much about that. But, if you read a little, you'll see that is easy.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1988411
3: There is no kernel available for overclocking besides the one we are using.
If you are trying to say the .zip's that you have to flash with Cwm, read the answer 2.
^^+1 what he said, but I would like to add, do yourself a huge favor and read EVERYTHING that pertains to your phones model BEFORE trying anything. Then read it all again. Then when you think you understand, read it again. You will see that most all of your questions have been previously answered, and you will gain knowledge in the process. It's a win/win for everybody that has the patience and puts in the effort to learn on their own. Good luck to ya.

[Q] unlock bootloader or downgrading system under 9.18.79.XT926

I have motorola Razr Maxx HD... recently I updated system to 9.18.79. However, today i saw cyanogenmod 10.2 version roll out and I really want to try 4.3 version since I have been stuck on 4.1 for almost a year. Unfortunately, when I try using motopocalypse to unlock bootloader, it keeps failing. Than I was thinking maybe I can downgrading back to the old version than unlock bootloader but on the website it says DO NOT USE THIS UTILITY ON THE LATEST 4.1.2 OTA UPDATE. I guess 9.18.79 is the newest OTA version. Therefore, I was wondering if there is anyway that i can unlock bootloader under 9.18.79 or downgrade whole system to lower version. So I can install cyanogenmod 10.2
Thank you
You're out of luck, sorry. There's no way to unlock after taking the newest OTA.
I believe that the correct answers to your questions about your recently updated Razr Maxx HD are -- NO, at this time there is no way to unlock the bootloader if you've installed the 9.18.79 update, YES, you can still root your phone. YES, you can downgrade your phone to 9.16.6 (but you still won't be able to unlock your bootloader after doing so). I have a Maxx HD with exactly this set of circumstances. The phone was running 9.18.79 when I got it. After having no luck unlocking the bootloader (as expected) I was able to root it using a method I found in this forum, then installed SafeStrap, then installed a couple of older stock kernel-based custom ROMs. It's certainly not as good as before the update but I'm rooted, all my apps run and I'm rid of all the Verizon bloatware. Not perfect but not bad.

I'm in the same boat, I have one question. Does anyone use the Motorola way to unlock bootloader? I found the website to unlock, wondered why that isn't an option.
It's for developer editions only.

Thanks for answering these questions. Who and how close are they to unlocking it? Do you see it happening soon?

I don't think anyone is working on this. The guy who came up with the exploit to unlock the bootloader in the first place said immediately after releasing it that he isn't touching Motorola devices' bootloaders anymore because they have become so difficult to crack. The update in the 9.16 OTA patched a pretty big security hole in the basic Android framework. That was a good thing because it prevents thieves from hacking your phone (hopefully) but it also took away a lot of our "freedom" with these devices, unfortunately.
Basically the process of finding a way to unlock the bootloaders is extremely difficult and not a rewarding enough venture for anyone to bother with right now. Don't hold your breath for a bootloader unlock anytime soon (likely never). If you've updated to 9.16 (I'm with you here, after replacing a bootloader unlocked, rooted and running CM10.1 phone with a cracked screen through insurance and receiving a replacement with an un-unlockable bootloader out of the box) kiss your ROMing dreams goodbye. The best you can do with the phone now is root it, install SafeStrap and run ROMs based off the stock kernel.
My advice to any and all willing to listen:
Get away from Verizon as fast as you can. They are making sure their phones release now-a-days with un-unlockable bootloaders. The upcoming Droid Ultra, Maxx, and Mini as well as the Moto X will all be locked down with no hope of unlocking their bootloaders on Verizon. The ATT Moto X will also not have an unlockable bootloader.
The best carrier for devs and flash hounds will be T-Mobile from here on out as they are marketing to people with their own devices and not locking down the software the way the big V is.
This really sucks because my favorite thing about my Razr HD Maxx is the battery, and the only thing close to or better as far as battery size/life coming out is the new Droid Maxx. With out being abkle to install a custom ROM, though I feel like I'm using an iPhone. But a good alternative may be an S4 on T-Mobs with an extended battery (thanks to Samsungs removable batteries) or charging case or something like that.
You are a wealth of information, thank you!
Would I be able to install any rom with safestrap? and then I would just be stuck with current kernal? Or does the rom have to be special in some way? I want to get the CyanogenMod 10.3 version. Thoughts? If I can't, what would be the best option as far as stock kernal rom?

I unfortunately upgraded to 9.18.79 a while back and now that i'd like to unlock the bootloader, I can't.
However, I do have best buy insurance, assuming my screen is broken, I can get the device replaced with a refurbished unit. What are the odds the refurbished unit has not been updated to a version that cannot be unlocked?
thanks

The odds are getting slimmer and slimmer as the days go on, but I have still seen a few people get replacements that have not been updated.
