Can't root a sgh 959v - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

I've tried to follow every single how to on here and I could not get my dad's galaxy s rooted. Its running KB5 2.2.1
Zergrush failed
I can't find a rooted rom that I can flash through odin
I can't find a one click rom to work with heimdall
Manual rooting didn't work
how the heck do I get this thing rooted? most of the DL links are pointed at multiupload and there are no good sources to get rooted roms from. Help me please.

Since you are on KB5....
You should go ahead an update your dad's phone to the newest official ROM - Gingerbread 2.3.6. Here is a simple guide for you to follow -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21954884
I recommend you stop after you update to Gingerbread and root the phone. Since it is not your phone I don't think you need to mess around with custom ROMs.
Good luck and let us know if you need more help.

Yep no custom roms for him. When I get it rooted I'm going to remove bloat with Titanium. I'll try this out and let you know.

I personally use System ROM Toolbox. TB seems to need to reboot for me when removing system .apk's, whereas with System ROM Toolbox batch remove the bloat... and if you decide to use a custom kernel to get CWM FB's DeBloater is really the easiest.

Woe dude...I feel for you. I had my SGS4G for 3 days now and just got it rooted about 20 minutes ago. Mine is running KJ6 2.3.6 Naturally, when we get our brand new toys instinct hits manual over-ride and we find ourselves tryna root it as soon as we wlked through the door - LOL! It's true - I did the same thing and hit a brick wall just like you did. And for the life of me I just couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong - and tryna figure out what I should have done that I wasn't doing. Sounds about right??? Okay, almost by complete accident I found out what I was doing wrong - lol - I tried to root my phone on a XP Pro OS!!! (Sounds Crazy Don't It?!) NOT ONE ROOT APPLICATION WORKED UNTIL I SWITCHED MY OS !!!
As soon as I slapped Super One Click 2.3.3.-Short Fuse on a Micro SD, and tried it again on a Vista 32-bit OS, the process took every bit of 3 1/2 minutes!!! Either way it goes, I hope my info can benefit you or someone reading in some way...
Til the next - HAPPY ROOTIN !!!

Here's the 2.1 link from Sprint

WWW.htc.com/us/support/hero-sprint/downloads/ FINALLY
Ummm.......
This is almost as bad as the "hey it looks like 2.1will be released on such and such a date" threads
I had a bit of trouble with the link opening into an email so i reposted it. Thanks.

Well, if you're rooted - I wouldn't do this. I don't know if you'll ever be able to get root again.
If you're not rooted - I'm not quite sure why you're here.
there is already three threads for this. download is very slow. anybody mirror yet?
Lets say I rooted my phone just so I could use the 2.1 ROMs people have here before the release, and I don't care if my phone is rooted or not, can I just install this ROM on a rooted phone or does it need to be "de-rooted" first?

As long as you don't care if you ever see root again, you can run the RUU no matter how you have your phone configured.
At OP,
I merged both threads that you created for this subject. Please do not double post. Thanks.

[Q] Noob Questions

I'm a recent convert from the apple universe to the droid, captivate universe.
I have a little knowledge in programming and was excited to play round with the phone. And yes I know, I know (or don't know) enough to cause problems.
I have a couple of noob questions and just want to make sure of the answers before I do anymore.
Within the first two days of picking up the phone I “rooted” the 2.1 O.S. to see how I could speed the unit up. Few days after that I installed 2.2 OS to see how that would affect the system and what speed increases I would see.
My noob questions are;
Is the original ROM 2.1 still on the phone? And if so what is the best way to back it up.
If not, can I get a copy of it somewhere?
My thought is when AT&T release the actual upgrade I might want to reinstall the original ROM and do their upgrade.
I know I should have started out by backing up but I was excited to start tinkering.
If someone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.
Thanks

Welcome to Android. Read, read and read some more.
If u rooted and installed a custom rom, the factory os is gone. The only way to get it back is using the Odin app from ur computer. I don't remember where to get it. I know if u look around in the dev area u will see all the other rom threads and some require to have ur phone back on the original os. They sometimes have a link to Odin.

Help please!! samsung i897 captivate

Hi guys i'm nes on this forum, i'm italian and i have a samsung captivate i897, i also take this opportunity to introduce myself...
Now i expose you the problem:
i have a i897 captivate marked AT&T for this i have a problem to fix the GPS and to install applications outside the market, I would like you to help me to make clean OS from the applications AT & T and put in i897 a i9000 ROM not rooted...please guys help me, and thanks in advance
1. Read the new owners guide.
2. This forum is about learning things by yourself. Don't expect to be spoonfed.
3. Custom ROM always =Rooted mind you.

I read the guide but i'm desperate,do you recommend something? can u post the link of the better rom and kernel that i can use? im noob in android world
I can't recommend anything man. Everything is good.
You have to discover by yourself what suits your needs.

the new user guide (that i wrote) teaches about stickies! and where to find them!
find the stickies in the captivate general, q&a and dev forums they have all the answers you are looking for and way more.
go. read. learn.
this is really basic stuff. At&t does not like you installing apps not from the market "its called side loading" you need to be rooted to fix it and there are pleanty of guides "one click root has an option to enable non market apps" to get a different rom go to the dev sectoin chose a rom and follow the simple directions or for a guide for the entire process http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364
Assuming what you meant was that you want ATT's crap taken off and a new ROM...
Why would you not want your device rooted? If voiding your warranty is a concern it's fine, there are plenty of methods to return back to stock Eclair/Froyo. And there really isn't a ROM out there that's head and shoulders over the rest, you're going to have to play around and see which one you like the feel of the best. Try out a different ROM every couple of days and see how you like it.

If you are asking someone to help you build a rom well... I don't think that will happen. You can go to samfirmwares.com and download a stock i9000 rom, but without root you, and if you don't know how to build to incorporate the home button and haptic feedback fixes, your phone won't work right. My suggestion is to go to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=948790
They are all stock i9000 roms with only busybox and root installed. I'm using the stock jvh on my captivate, at the moment, and it works great. You will have to deal with root. It's better to be rooted anyway.

U wont need to use kies. Any update released by Samsung will b atleast 1-2 months late than the ones in this forum. And neways, once u load custom rom, kies wont recognise ur fone. Don't worry v all hate kies,u really don't need it in the least bit.

Only replying to that small part of your post, and correcting you by saying no, you don't need to be rooted to sideload applications. SWM (Sideload Wonder Machine) can do it so long as you have the drivers installed and USB Debugging on. I installed several applications as soon as I got the phone, long before I ever rooted my phone, much less installed a custom ROM on it.

Why didn't you use google? There are plenty of places that explain how to root that aren't on this site, which is more an "advanced" place anyways(I use that term loosely, but I get the idea that people here assume you know a little about your phone).
Check out MobileTechVideos, the guy who does those had a three-part, in-depth ROM flash set of videos that explain exactly how to use One-Click to Root.
Edit:
Christ dude, use some decent punctuation and at least attempt to be succinct in your requests. Freaking out isn't going to get you anywhere.

Best/Most Stable Rom?

Well I'm looking to root my wife's Droid Charge, I only have experience in rooting HTC phones, So I'm going to have another learning curve about rooting a Samsung phone. something about odin software
Im wondering if there are any dev's currently working on/tweaking there roms for this phone, or is the development of this phone is dead.
I would like to flash a rom that she can use as a DD. Has anyone ported a ICS rom to this phone where everything works as it should? Link would be cool.
Any tips or links to the latest rooting method for this would would be great. She did take all/any ota updates Verizon has sent out.
What a huge difference between her Droid Charge and my old Droid Incredible. Big mistake thinking the Droid line would not put out a product that was inferior to there older Droid Inc.
So I want to make the best of a disappointing situation. I know some Dev's can turn a turd into a golden nugget, so my fingers are crossed that there is a ROM out there that will make this phone work like It should have out of the box.
Thanks for any input/links you may have to help
No working ICS, no AOSP. The RIL is still not cracked on this phone after a year and a half. Tweaked is really the only game in town for roms. Not that it's a bad game...it's a very good rom, and customizable to an almost AOKP level.
Based on your sig, you'll have no issues rooting. It's way easier than the Rezound...the bootloader is completely unlocked and in the clear out of the box. It's literally just flash and go here. I'll try to scare up a step by step guide for you.

look in the development section - there's only one custom ROM for FP5 (Tweaked 3.0), but it is really awesome! no fully working ICS (we doubt the charge will ever get it). however, there are some really neat themes (ICS, JB, etc styles) available - look in the themes section.
this device is really easy to root, and nearly impossible to brick.

Thanks Shrike!
That would be sweet. Thats why I love XDA, no matter what forum you are in theres always someone there to help
This is older, but it's a good step-by-step on Odin: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160580
You'll only need to flash recovery in Odin...everything else can be done from recovery. Here's the newest recovery you'll need to flash in Odin: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160580
The only other really important thing to know that may not be in those threads is that the stock rom overwrites recovery with stock on every boot. The easiest way around that is to just have the rom on your SD card before you start, then flash the recovery and boot straight into recovery (with VolUp+Home+Power) without booting the phone normally. When you flash Tweaked, it will stop the automatic recovery installation so CWM will stay.
Good Deal, Thanks Dude. I now have a little project for tonight or tomorrow:good:

[Q] Bricked GS3 - Avoid Reccurence

Hello all!
This is my first post here and I thank all for comments in advance - they are very appreciated!
So I was very new to the aspect of rooting when I first got my Sprint GS3, but I read posts here and watched many tutorials on youtube and successfully rooted my device using Odin, then using Goomanager flashed CM 10.1 without a hitch. I had a custom kernel as well ( do not remember the name ), so when I updated my ROM I went hunting for new kernels as well. On an XDA (forgot the name/link) thread I found kernels compatible for CM 10.1, but when I flashed it my phone got bricked. No drivers found, won't boot into recovery or download, taking out and replacing battery wont work - not even an LED light. I said that I lost it and received a new one, but I was wondering why it got bricked (I have a bad gut feeling I did something as dumb as getting an international version kernel as I heard they would not be compatible?) And if there are links for a kernel for a stock firmware rooted GS3 - I have not seen one and I am nervous on finding more seeing as how I already bricked one phone. Thanks for the help!!! I just want to be more educated on this so I do not have to spend another 150$ in replacements. Thanks!

Just stick with the kernel provided in the rom you are using. The developer picked or made that kernel for a reason.

Only flash kernels that are in your device threads. Next time leave out what you did to get it replaced as that is fraud and not looked at well here.
