[Q] Bricked GS3 - Avoid Reccurence - General Questions and Answers

Hello all!
This is my first post here and I thank all for comments in advance - they are very appreciated!
So I was very new to the aspect of rooting when I first got my Sprint GS3, but I read posts here and watched many tutorials on youtube and successfully rooted my device using Odin, then using Goomanager flashed CM 10.1 without a hitch. I had a custom kernel as well ( do not remember the name ), so when I updated my ROM I went hunting for new kernels as well. On an XDA (forgot the name/link) thread I found kernels compatible for CM 10.1, but when I flashed it my phone got bricked. No drivers found, won't boot into recovery or download, taking out and replacing battery wont work - not even an LED light. I said that I lost it and received a new one, but I was wondering why it got bricked (I have a bad gut feeling I did something as dumb as getting an international version kernel as I heard they would not be compatible?) And if there are links for a kernel for a stock firmware rooted GS3 - I have not seen one and I am nervous on finding more seeing as how I already bricked one phone. Thanks for the help!!! I just want to be more educated on this so I do not have to spend another 150$ in replacements. Thanks!

Just stick with the kernel provided in the rom you are using. The developer picked or made that kernel for a reason.

The reason that I wanted another kernel is since Cyanogemods stock one does not let me OC/UV and those are options that I would like to have

Only flash kernels that are in your device threads. Next time leave out what you did to get it replaced as that is fraud and not looked at well here.

Ok that is just dumb. Make sure you understand what your doing before you do. Remember the min you flashed a custom rom. You no longer have any warranty.

I'm taking my time now and i read as much as i can to see the issues others are having. been new here is like a kid with a box of new toys "want to play with all of them at the same time". thats another reason i registered, to thank all the great developers that take time to make such a great roms for us to enjoy :good:

I had a hard brick a few months ago I sent it it in for a jtag repair and it works perfectly it is a lot cheaper than getting a replacement phone

too bad.
now i believe that it pays to read as many times as you can before doing something to a precious phone.
i hope it will not happen to me..
so help me god.

Can't root a sgh 959v

I've tried to follow every single how to on here and I could not get my dad's galaxy s rooted. Its running KB5 2.2.1
Zergrush failed
I can't find a rooted rom that I can flash through odin
I can't find a one click rom to work with heimdall
Manual rooting didn't work
how the heck do I get this thing rooted? most of the DL links are pointed at multiupload and there are no good sources to get rooted roms from. Help me please.
Since you are on KB5....
You should go ahead an update your dad's phone to the newest official ROM - Gingerbread 2.3.6. Here is a simple guide for you to follow -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21954884
I recommend you stop after you update to Gingerbread and root the phone. Since it is not your phone I don't think you need to mess around with custom ROMs.
Good luck and let us know if you need more help.

Yep no custom roms for him. When I get it rooted I'm going to remove bloat with Titanium. I'll try this out and let you know.

I personally use System ROM Toolbox. TB seems to need to reboot for me when removing system .apk's, whereas with System ROM Toolbox batch remove the bloat... and if you decide to use a custom kernel to get CWM FB's DeBloater is really the easiest.

Samsung Galaxy S 4G
Woe dude...I feel for you. I had my SGS4G for 3 days now and just got it rooted about 20 minutes ago. Mine is running KJ6 2.3.6 Naturally, when we get our brand new toys instinct hits manual over-ride and we find ourselves tryna root it as soon as we wlked through the door - LOL! It's true - I did the same thing and hit a brick wall just like you did. And for the life of me I just couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong - and tryna figure out what I should have done that I wasn't doing. Sounds about right??? Okay, almost by complete accident I found out what I was doing wrong - lol - I tried to root my phone on a XP Pro OS!!! (Sounds Crazy Don't It?!) NOT ONE ROOT APPLICATION WORKED UNTIL I SWITCHED MY OS !!!
As soon as I slapped Super One Click 2.3.3.-Short Fuse on a Micro SD, and tried it again on a Vista 32-bit OS, the process took every bit of 3 1/2 minutes!!! Either way it goes, I hope my info can benefit you or someone reading in some way...
Til the next - HAPPY ROOTIN !!!

ok i bricked my phone.
how can i undo it. nothing happens. tried following links nothing.
help thank you.
Possibly the worst first post ever. We should have a "best of" list somewhere on this site. Kinda like Craigslist does.
@OP With the amount of info you provided I can tell you nothing.
LOL...
Hi TX
how did you brick your phone?
Did you odin it a Vibrant ROM instead of SGS 4G?
We really need more info.
See if you can get into download mode (yellow triangle) by pressing both volume keys as you plug phone to computer (you will need to install Samsung drivers first)
sent from me
Is your phone really a GALAXY S 4G or do you have an EPIC 4G like the other guy or an GALAXY S, or any of the other models that people think are this phone and then flash the wrong stuff to it.
together orienh
Its a Samsung Galaxy 4g by tmobile. i flashed the vibrant stuff on there which when i download the tom it did not say it was for vibrant,.
I used Odin to do it with.
i been trying to get it into down load mode since i done bricked it. looks like i might end up buying one of those usb jig to force it.
I ave flashed phone in the past but mostly blackberry's to different carriers.
so as a noob i F**cked up on my personal phone which i have a back up which is not a big deal. all i wanted to do was upgrade from fryo to ice-cream or something better.
Sucks that as of now not given the opertunity to up date software.
thanks

"What time is it?"
I typically run something close to Team Acid's CM9. Recently it has been with Hefe Kernel of Darkness, the auto-brightness mods, and I build with TWRP (since I have come to prefer it over Clockwork recovery). I like AOKP for some of its features as well, and find the two perform similarly for me.
Right now I'm running CM9 mainly because of the work on the Aries kernel I'm doing. Team Acid needs to get it running on one ROM solidly before seeing if there are ROM-related things that also need to be resolved.

WOW REALLY? That "unhelpful" link is Samsungs stock firmware repository. Click link, Register, click firmware, search device number, DL firmware for ODIN. How does it feel having your hand held like a little kid?
you know, it snot-nosed stuck-up kids like you that make us not want to help people. first, you post this thread with absolutely no helpful information on what you did to your phone. second, it's obvious you didn't search before you posted, otherwise you wouldn't have posted this thread. third, when people were being helpful and i mean very helpful (most would just point and laugh or flame at you for posting this thread), you don't even thank them. and finally after someone basically held your hand and gave you probably the most helpful link in regards to which rom to flash with odin, you go and disrespect him. but i can also see that maybe there is a little sense in your head cause you actually did use the search feature of this forum and found something helpful also. but that's only "one thing positive for you. hopefully you will learn something from this though. and now i'm going to quote something from someone you may know...

Good evening everyone,
Ok i wanted to clear something up for one.
I did research out my wazoo before posting this.
i posted plain and simple what my phone was doing.
Did not think you had say hey i have a zebra phone. My phone got bricked. yes my fault. i did more research found nothing that's why i posted the basic info thinking someone would say try this.
Ok for the ones who tried to help me thanks but i have gotten one rude person who replied originally. after i posted.
to the guy who posted the link for sammobile now all you did was posted a link thanks but on your side you could have told me register first to get what i need. but you did not so when i went to that link it looked like a place for viriusis, my Virus scanner went off so i posted what i posted, after i seen your post after i post i did what you said and ok some reason all was good. now before anyone replied back, i still did me research and found someone with something helpful not using Odin the link i posted and i said thanks to that person on there thread. I have never flashed an android phone before. i have done blackberries from carrier to carrier sprint to cricket.
For those who were helpful and not rude to me Thank you.
And report me go ahead fine. i am just now getting home from work to reply back to this and say thanks for who have helped.
Have a great day.
That is all.
I don't see anything in this thread worthy of reporting.....what's so horrible here?
What I see is some reading to deeply into things....but nothing said or done againsts any xda rules....other than some non vulgar name calling which was actually done by someone who is doing the reporting.
Sorry but this is sad.
Way to treat a new Guy!.....
@OP
The guy who posted the link for Sammobile is the same guy who "rudely" replied to you. That guy is me. If you think that reply was rude so be it. You provided ZERO useful info. Still haven't. I'm glad you got your phone back up and running. Please stay on stock until you decide to take the time and learn a few things.
OK first off, you need a new virus scanner. That website literally how we got gingerbread on this phone until it was official October last year.
Or you have a bad site open in another tab.
You should have at least looked around the website.
2. One of the first stickies in the general section is the DON'T FLASH ANY VIBRANT ROM thread. It is NOT the same phone.
3. This phone is called the SGH- T959V for future reference.
4. Next time you post, don't blame the guy that helps you.
@hechoen. Just for reference. The website only has leaked firmware up to KI1. You have to go to sampro.pl for KJ6. (It is in polish, and you need an account.(use google chrome for a translator))

[REQ] Android 4.2.1/2 ROM for Galaxy Victory 4G LTE

If possible, I'm willing to donate $100 or more to a developer that is willing to cook up a Jellybean 4.2.1 or 4.2.2 custom rom for the VM Samsung Galaxy Victory 4G LTE. Possibly an AOKP rom. I'm currently running cmbaughman's PACMAN rom atm and I love it. So if it is possible, $100 donation goes to the first runner up.
(sorry about the placement of the post, I didn't know where else to post it since there is no SGV forum threads)

work in progress ... updated 2 days ago...
It's being worked on. The Galaxy S3 (d2) and the Victory (goghspr) are similar, but not exactly the same. The display is different, and there are not any other devices I can find with the same display as the goghspr. WIFI is not the same, BT is not the same, etc. There is already a booting CM-10 for the goghspr, but I stopped work on it to move to CM-10.1. The link you provided is to the post of a guy I'm also working with, g60madman. Give us time. I'm working on the kernel when I can (I'm disabled and have a new painful injury to deal with). The apexqtmo guys have been very helpful and are allowing me to dig through their work to get some stuff for the goghspr/goghvmu kernel. I already have cm-10.1 building, but it won't boot until I get the drivers ported. Create thread with the device name and show the generation of interest as often as possible. I've already requested a dedicated forum, but there needs to be a real NEED for it before we can get it. Cheers and out!

Thanks for the support. There is not a forum on XDA for this device. There are two on androidforums. I have ported cwm and twrp and have released a faster kernel and some other junk too. I think others have some stuff there too. Hit my github link and you'll see some repos and forks for other guys basing off my work. g60madman just patched our kernel up and he's setting up for cm-10.1 for the goghvmo. Again, take a look. Maybe this will help:
http://www.oudhitsquad.com/android/Samsung/SPH-L300/Mod/recovery/TWRP-2.5.tar
Remember, uncheck auto-reboot. Once flash is finished, pull USB cable and battery. Replace battery and boot directly into recovery using VOLUP+POWER until blue letters are seen in upper left corner. Release buttons. That should get you going. Use goomanager to update to TWRP 2.6

It is pretty safe. If you are worried, wait for other people to try it first
I had a Gnex for two years, running mostly AOKP. You can trust all of the recognized developers here at XDA. If you don't want to risk it, ALWAYS make an nandroid backup.
About the only time you may damage a device is by installing a ROM for a different device. As @justmpm mentioned, if you're having doubts about a particular ROM wait for someone else to post their findings to see then if you wish to try it or not.
Take your time and READ, READ, READ... That is the biggest mistake made around here. People see something they want and just jump in to it without doing any research or doing minimal research. There's in nothing wrong with being cautious.
make a nice backup and go on the safe side!

Hi there.
Yes it is safe as long as
1- You make complete backup
2- Follow proper guide to root and install your rom
3- If you are rookie. Try those roms that have already been tested and running smoothly by others.
Hope that will help you out
Of course bad things could happen also don't forget those same problems could occur with a factory OTA update.
Besides that you could end up with features on your device either gone or broken which I imagine could also happen with a factory rom.
None of them are 100% perfect and safe it is just something you have to accept and take measures before hand to be sure you have backups and/or find knowledge you need to bring your device back from the dead.
These are also all reasons NO ONE should EVER blindly start flashing things to their device without doing some reasearch which is where most problems come from.
Just inform yourself about what you are doing and a lot of things are pretty safe to do or try.
This is about the best advice that could be given I just realized I kinda took the long way around of saying mostly the same thing haha.

Well , If you flash a compatible ROM with your device correctly , nothing will go wrong !
but always take a nandroid backup just in case
the things that can harm your phone most of the time are just kernel related just don't overclock the CPU too much and do your best to avoid kernel tweaks
and every ROM on here has a list of bugs ! so using a custom ROM is totally safe BUT you need to check the bugs list before

worst thing that could happed is you brick your device if that happens just find the ruu for your device and itll restore it to factory settings

It is pretty safe. If you are worried, wait for other people to try it first

About the only time you may damage a device is by installing a ROM for a different device. As @justmpm mentioned, if you're having doubts about a particular ROM wait for someone else to post their findings to see then if you wish to try it or not.

Of course bad things could happen also don't forget those same problems could occur with a factory OTA update.
Besides that you could end up with features on your device either gone or broken which I imagine could also happen with a factory rom.

No, there's no problem if you flash it properly.....
I have bricked my Gionee GN 100 with a custom rom from another brand but it was the same model. So, take extreme care. I'm also not sure how to fix it. I have some backups but I used only cat. Screen is totally black the phone is technically dead.

Sorry to scare you just giving you realistic info.
Basically flash nothing without researching what you are doing is the biggest point to be taken.
Pretty much what's already been said about making sure the rom is for your specific advice. Usually it's just a soft brick if you flash the wrong rom. The real damage comes using custom kernels the wrong way. i.e. overclocking the cpu/gpu too much. That can cause permanent hardware failure...
I hard briocked my galaxy s3 and had to send it out to to be Jtaged. It was my bad though, just be careful and double check your files prior to flashing. Have ODIN on your computer and be ready to reflash as stock image if you mess somehting up too
I have messed up flashing loads of times and even when I thought my phone(s) was gone for good, I always found a way to bring it back...even if it takes a few hours/days haha...

Odin doesn't work for all devices. Some OMAP devices like Galaxy Tab, your S3, and a few others.

you will be fine as long as you read and follow directions exactly as they are posted. There is always a possibility damage, but if you are careful, you will be fine.

Simple yes or no question.

Ive researched probably 7 minutes and do not have anymore time because I have to leave for work. Without lecturing me on how to search the forums, please for the sake of humanity, could someone answer this yes or no question.
Will faux 123 kernel work on my Stock Verizon Galaxy S3 schi535 4.1.2 unlocked bootloader with TWRP? I would be truly grateful if someome could provide their opinion if I should do this or not. My goal is to have a good gaming phone but still has battery to get me through the day.
Thank you
Yes. Just make sure you flash the one made for d2vzw TouchWiz. I've never tried the kernel myself so I can't provide an opinion on it. Best thing to do is try it out and see how it runs.
Thank you for your advice to use the d2vzw kernel. More likely than not, I would have flashed the incorrect kernel. I will give it a try.
Ill just go ahead and say,
THREAD CLOSED
Hey, thanks again bro. Your suggestion probably saved me a huge amount of hassle because I more than likely would have flashed the wrong version. Ive been using root for nearly 3 years and this was my first time flashing a custom kernel/rom.
Incase anyone cares, faux123 kernel for vzw gs3 schi535 4.1.2 rooted unlocked bootloader is realer than real deal holyfield. I have completely gotten rid of the "homepage lag" after clearing the ram, and my battery is sitting at 70% after 12 hours of use.
Highly recommended.
