[Q] Noob Questions - Captivate General

I'm a recent convert from the apple universe to the droid, captivate universe.
I have a little knowledge in programming and was excited to play round with the phone. And yes I know, I know (or don't know) enough to cause problems.
I have a couple of noob questions and just want to make sure of the answers before I do anymore.
Within the first two days of picking up the phone I “rooted” the 2.1 O.S. to see how I could speed the unit up. Few days after that I installed 2.2 OS to see how that would affect the system and what speed increases I would see.
My noob questions are;
Is the original ROM 2.1 still on the phone? And if so what is the best way to back it up.
If not, can I get a copy of it somewhere?
My thought is when AT&T release the actual upgrade I might want to reinstall the original ROM and do their upgrade.
I know I should have started out by backing up but I was excited to start tinkering.
If someone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.
Thanks

Welcome to Android. Read, read and read some more.

If u rooted and installed a custom rom, the factory os is gone. The only way to get it back is using the Odin app from ur computer. I don't remember where to get it. I know if u look around in the dev area u will see all the other rom threads and some require to have ur phone back on the original os. They sometimes have a link to Odin.

Help please!! samsung i897 captivate

Hi guys i'm nes on this forum, i'm italian and i have a samsung captivate i897, i also take this opportunity to introduce myself...
Now i expose you the problem:
i have a i897 captivate marked AT&T for this i have a problem to fix the GPS and to install applications outside the market, I would like you to help me to make clean OS from the applications AT & T and put in i897 a i9000 ROM not rooted...please guys help me, and thanks in advance
1. Read the new owners guide.
2. This forum is about learning things by yourself. Don't expect to be spoonfed.
3. Custom ROM always =Rooted mind you.

the new user guide (that i wrote) teaches about stickies! and where to find them!
find the stickies in the captivate general, q&a and dev forums they have all the answers you are looking for and way more.
go. read. learn.
this is really basic stuff. At&t does not like you installing apps not from the market "its called side loading" you need to be rooted to fix it and there are pleanty of guides "one click root has an option to enable non market apps" to get a different rom go to the dev sectoin chose a rom and follow the simple directions or for a guide for the entire process http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364
Assuming what you meant was that you want ATT's crap taken off and a new ROM...
Why would you not want your device rooted? If voiding your warranty is a concern it's fine, there are plenty of methods to return back to stock Eclair/Froyo. And there really isn't a ROM out there that's head and shoulders over the rest, you're going to have to play around and see which one you like the feel of the best. Try out a different ROM every couple of days and see how you like it.

If you are asking someone to help you build a rom well... I don't think that will happen. You can go to samfirmwares.com and download a stock i9000 rom, but without root you, and if you don't know how to build to incorporate the home button and haptic feedback fixes, your phone won't work right. My suggestion is to go to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=948790
They are all stock i9000 roms with only busybox and root installed. I'm using the stock jvh on my captivate, at the moment, and it works great. You will have to deal with root. It's better to be rooted anyway.

U wont need to use kies. Any update released by Samsung will b atleast 1-2 months late than the ones in this forum. And neways, once u load custom rom, kies wont recognise ur fone. Don't worry v all hate kies,u really don't need it in the least bit.

Only replying to that small part of your post, and correcting you by saying no, you don't need to be rooted to sideload applications. SWM (Sideload Wonder Machine) can do it so long as you have the drivers installed and USB Debugging on. I installed several applications as soon as I got the phone, long before I ever rooted my phone, much less installed a custom ROM on it.

Why didn't you use google? There are plenty of places that explain how to root that aren't on this site, which is more an "advanced" place anyways(I use that term loosely, but I get the idea that people here assume you know a little about your phone).
Check out MobileTechVideos, the guy who does those had a three-part, in-depth ROM flash set of videos that explain exactly how to use One-Click to Root.
Edit:
Christ dude, use some decent punctuation and at least attempt to be succinct in your requests. Freaking out isn't going to get you anywhere.

[Q] absolutely new - where to start?

hi all,
I'm an absolute newcomer to android and smartphones. I bought a droid charge yesterday and I know I want to root it and install a leaner OS that gives me a lot of flexibility and less bloatware. However, I need to learn some basics before I blunder my way into this.
Looking around this forum, the jargon is all greek to me. Is there a good place to start for total noobs like me?
I'd like to learn:
* best and safest methods to root the phone
* what custom rom's are available
* how to ensure I can restore it to factory condition
If there is a FAQ somewhere that goes through the basics, pleas just point me to it.
Thx and apologies if this is redundant with other posts

Thank you, I'll check that out. But I'm looking for something even more basic, if it exists. Like, what is Odin? What is the different between a Rom/Kernel and a Mod? What is a Theme? Are there any catalogues of the custom ROM's that give comparisons? As a professional software eng, I'll be able to get this done once I get the jargon, but I'm way behind the 8-ball here...
Thx

That was a somewhat polite "RTFM" message. Thanks.
I'm looking for a FAQ or a beginner's guide. Sitting there googleing dozens of terms is possible, but I'm looking for a beginner's resource. But I do appreciate you pointing out the obvious ;-)

There's a great guide in the Android Development section of the Charge Forums that'll shed a ton of light on your situation.
1. I find that the easiest way to root your phone is by flashing through Odin. It's basically a one-click root/flash kernel/rom. Even if Odin fails and your phone is soft-bricked you should be able to recover the phone by attempting to flash through Odin again. I've soft-bricked my Charge several times
2. Altered Beast was the first custom ROM available. Now you have GummyCharged, Eclipse, Humble and various GB molds. I think the main four ROMs available are Altered Beast, Gummy, Eclipse and Humble. I may be missing one but I'm usually on top of this crap
3. You should be able to restore it to factory condition by using Odin or Heimdall. I believe there is a Samsung utility that can be used as well. I wouldn't worry too much about restoring it back to stock

take it easy, u might hurt ur self
ok its not quite in the right place, but no need to bite his head off.
anyway, in answer to your question, the way i removed the branding from my vodafone DS was this
http://revolutionary.io/ download this tool and follow its instructions, this will root your phone and give you a recovery tool that will allow you to flash a new ROM onto your phone.
With the phone rooted, you will be able to back up your data using an app from the market. Titanium Backup is the usual favorite.
EDIT : may be wrong about it providing root, I personally skipped the backup step as I had no data to lose, but if that is the case there are guides in the forums for obtaining root access
next look through this forum to find a ROM that suits your needs, from the sound of things you want the stock one, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1230029 should suit you.
download the zip file and transfer it to your SD card.
next you need to reboot into your recovery mode by turning the phone off, then hold the vol down button and power button together and selecting recovery from the menu
finally use the volume buttons to select install zip from SD card, and point it at your downloaded rom. it may take a few mins so allow it to finish then select reboot phone.
again this first boot may take a little time, but once its up you should have a debranded ROM as if you had just bought the phone new.
Add the details for your google account and redownload your backup app so you can restore your data and you are good to go
thank you very much for your help,
I shall give it a try,
by the way, will be able to install official updates on it, or will I have to stick with custom ROMs for ever?
thanks again

Nooo, not forever. Just until you get a new device
But seriously: Custom roms don't work with official updates. The trick is that most of the custom rom developers provide their own flashable updates for their roms. The difference is in the way you perform the update. There are even fairly developed custom roms, like MIUI, which have their own over-the-air updates (actually more often than official updates are coming.)
EDIT: In fact, you can switch back to a stock rom anytime and get the official updates back.

Once unlocked, i.e. rooted, you can use titanium backup or a root file explorer to uninstall the apps you don't need from the rom you are running atm.

Well, again: read around the forum a little, please. There is a sticky thread right on the top of the development section, called ROMS/RECOVERY/ROOT etc. It's a must read for newcomers. Very useful thread. There you find a link to a collection of stock roms. These are distributed as .exe files, so you can run them in windows and a simple-to-use installer will pop up and help you with pushing the stock rom to your phone. It is advisable that you double check that you are flashing the rom you really want. Someone here will help you to choose the right one.
EDIT: By the way in the general section (where we are now with this thread) there is also a very useful sticky. It's called Guide for Newcomers to Android. Seriously, it's a good read, given that you own an Android phone...

OK man, I will do that, thanks for the tips
Thanks chris5s, Ill definitely give it a shot.
This tool would help to get rid of the annoying Orange splash screen, and other useless apps could be removed as stated before.
Of course, best way is to install generic HTC European rom or custom rom of your choice.
Aforementioned tool would also help install roms, radios, etc, of your choice.
Good luck
Peace
Edit: sorry, Android flasher won't help install roms, but will help with installing custom recovery - Ext4 or Clockwork Mod - essential in s-off/rooted flashing.

[Q] CAN I STILL UNroot MY GALAXY S3 WITH A CUSTOM ROM INSTALLED?

Hello EVERYONE,
I rooted my device yesterday and decided to install custom ROM: CM10 (CynogenMod). Honestly I don't like it. I just want to go back to stock EVERYTHING, touchwiz. I don't care so much about UNrooting as to going back to touchwiz is my main concern. I'm pretty sure I can UNroot it since there is SO MANY friggin' videos on YouTube on how to do it and NONE on how to flash it back to stock BEFORE UNrooting. Though I'm confident that I'd be able to UNroot it I was just wondering if it was ok to do just that WHILE Cynogen is my current ROM because I don't care if it deletes everything while doing that, I just want to go back to stock. ALL the vids on YouTube are either of Verizon models, UK or ALREADY on stock ROM and only showing UNrooting. So as you can see guys I'm pretty nervous and would appreciate ANY kind of help. And if it helps I backedup on Titanium before flashing to CM and my S3model is the Sprint version, SPH_L710. THANKS GUYS.
just install a launcher
Why don't you try a different ROM or even a launcher. And remember, if you haven't bricked a phone, you just haven't flashed enough LOL

I'm so tired of people rooting and flashing stuff WITHOUT making sure that they can restock. This leads to a lot of talking about the same things over and over again. Also if you look on xda you will find some guides on how to restock.
I want to play a game. I'll give you the main steps on how to solve this but you will have to SEARCH before POSTING.
1. www.sammobile.com
2. download rom in zip file
3. extract the .TAR file which is to be found inside the zip(it's only one file, you can't possibly miss it)
4. connected phone while in download mode
5. ODIN, PDA, insert .TAR
6. start and done.
(to make it easier the steps are in the right order)
Before you do anything, SEARCH and make sure you understand the procedure. When you think you understood give me a reply and tell me what you have to do to make it work so you won't screw things up even worse.
Consider forgiving me for talking like a jerk, I'm not like this usually, but this is at least the 15th time I see someone asking how to restock.
Good luck.
And please, members of the xda forum, please, DON'T give him any links and detailed guides on how to do this. the 1st rule of the xda forum is SEARCH BEFORE POSTING (forum rules) so he has to learn it himself.
-not to mention the whole thread is posted in the wrong section. it should've been in the s3's forum-

Hey Sewrizer,
What's Up man, dude No worries man your frustration is well understood. Don't apologize, I LITERALLY woke up yesterday and decided to get into this whole rooting thing since my phone is off. Did enough research to get it done by not UNdone. I was too impatient to pay attention to the whole backUp and restore process. But I carefully read your rules to your game, lol, and understand them completely. In fact the whole Sammobile was my first idea but sammobile's registration wasn't working at the time. Working now and made my username etc. Now its just telling to wait for my download, 13min., due to traffic? Anyways I do have Odin. I know how to extract, but to make sure. Am I USB debugging before I power down and go into download mode? You don't have to reply but I REALLY do appreciate you taking the time out to make that list. AND please dude, no worries on the jerk attitude bro. I'm your student man, teach me man its all good. Oh i'm new to forums too so I'm not too sure on where the S3 Q&A is. But again THANKS SEWRIZER! you're great man.

Why don't you try a different ROM or even a launcher. And remember, if you haven't bricked a phone, you just haven't flashed enough LOL

Endeavor! Whats Up man,
Sorry dude I'm new to this whole forum thing so I'm pretty siked that people are actually replying! Pretty cool for me, anyways I'm new to this whole rooting thing too, like I was telling Sewrizer I LITERALLY wokeUp and felt like rooting my S3 sine I'm no longer with Sprint lol. And launchers are common, not everyone is cordinated enough to root, believe it or not lol. But I'll remember that man, your brick a phone quote! THRASHERMAG STYLE!
