Stock recovery wont verify signature to get clockworkmod, help? - Captivate General

I rooted my captivate 2.2 with superoneclick, its running the stock 2.2 I haven't flashed anything custom. I downloaded ROM manager, clicked flash clockwork mod recovery for my device, clicked reboot into recovery. From there I hit reinstall packages, which is what one of the stickies told me to do. It gives me error:
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
I really need cwm to get a Android backup so I can start flashing roms, somebody help a brotha out!!

You can't flash recovery that way for anything since 2.1. You'll need to flash a custom kernel that already has recovery baked in with Odin.
What ROM are you trying to go to?

rom manager isnt for captivate since 2.1..
read my [how to] flash Captivate roms from stock STICKY!!

I'd read some of the basic how-to threads again if I were you. There's several one-click packages in the dev forum you can use to get some experience using Odin and flashing in general.

If you haven't read what you are supposed to and are sitting there waiting for a damn handholding session you are in the wrong F'ng forum.
Fix it yourself and gain some damn knowledge in the process.

This thread is over. Chandler507, XDA is a development site. People are expected to do their own research. If you show you've made an effort, people will help you. Sit there waiting for help, and you will unfortunately be flamed. Read the stickies in the various subforums and understand what you're doing before going forward.
To the rest of you - hit the report button and let me deal with it - don't make more work for me.

I'll have to give it a go later. I just added the modified 3e stock recovery from the other topic and all looks good.

This method works to get cwm installed and working

This has also been discussed, but I'm posting the information from Captivate.
You need modified 3e stock recovery first See Here (3e requires root)
* Download this .zip file
* put it on your internal SD card (/sdcard) via
- ADB or
- mount it to your computer and copy/paste it there.
* rename the .zip to "update.zip".
* reboot into 3e recovery and choose "Reinstall Packages". You may have to do this twice on the first time.
Voila, you are in CWM.

Aaaaaaaaaand its done. Check my other post .
Can someone who has successfully flashed something with CWM please give my ROM a try. Others in my thread can't even start to flash the ROM because their SD card won't mount or stay mounted properly. If you don't want to flash the ROM it would still be helpful if you came over and told us the steps you took to flash so we can figure out the difference. Thanks.

valid point. +1
You have to re-install packages twice before cwm takes. And the update.zip on the root of the SD
If then it doesn't take, delete the update.zip. then flashclockwork again via RM and make sure the update.zip is again on the internal SD. then try reinstall packages twice. again. Worked everytime for me. Should be same for you

Not with a failed signature verification. That means he's on 3e recovery and needs to flash a different kernel in order to get CWM recovery. I agree that if you don't read the forums and know this flashing will lead to trouble.

[Q] [HELP] Loading a ROM on Captivate

Feeling dumb, but I have successfully rooted and loaded (multiple times) ROMS on my Droid Incredible. Though I can't seem to get ROM manager to load a downloaded (CM7) rom onto my captivate - YES the phone is rooted .
I think i'm missing the bootloader, but i'm unsure. All the phone does is go to "Samsung Recovery Utils" and offers the following options only
*reboot system now
*reinstall packages
*delete all user data
*delete cache data
*format internal sd-card
Can anyone tell me what i'm doing wrong or point me to a thread that doesn't just say "download rom, install from SD card and done"?
let me give you a hint. there is a sticky section.....read

Alright, I tried the Heimdall version which shows more promise, i'm just now unable to boot into any recovery. I hold the volume buttons and power for the 3-5 seconds and it boots to a boot screen with "TALON" on it. but nothing else from there.
Am I missing something else?

click the bat file in this file.
you will have THE SAME RECOVERY with NO error

flash any update.zip package
but since you have a custom kernel with cwm now.....
What heimdall method are you talking about? for recovery? for flashing roms? what are you talking about. heimdall can do alot of stuff. did you upgrade bootloaders? or??
keep trying the button combo.. if it turns on, it will go into recovery.

[Q] att firmware upgrade 2.3.6 root?

Hi noob here with a general question about the official 2.3.6 att upgrade, hope i posted in the right place. question is basically if and when the phone can gain root access. any answeres would be grately appreciated. thanx
it can gain root access now there just isn't a thread on it yet. I'd tell ya how but then nobody would see it. I am woking on packaging all the parts together and starting a thread. in the future it will get easier however if new kernel sorces are released. the only way to get root right now is through a kernel and the existing kernels have a few issues on the new firmware so you have to flash back to the stock one after.
adding a script to in initramfs on the new kernel is possible but the problem is that repcking initramfs in a kernel to flash to the phone is such a waste if the parts to build a better kernel are just around the corner.

On Victory OP, the second post has an odin infused gb kernel - towards the bottomof the page.
you can download that kernel to your pc.
you will need to know how to use odin.
you will need to dl victory..some the of links still works..the mulitload first link doesn't..the deposit link..4-5 down still works
after you odin the kernel, you will boot into a red recovery..
you will need to go to the voodoo option and disable lagfix
then you can flash victory through the cwm menu
make sure you disable lagfix like the OP says..follow direction ...you are alread on rfs file system..not ext4
if you mess up and get stuck on the bootloop..don't worry..odin back to stock..whichever stock and start over.

After you have DL the odin infused gb kernel and flashed it,
you will need to boot into recovery. it should be red.
instead of going into voodoo lagfix to disable, you will not have to do anything with it.
you will only need to factory reset, wipe data and wipe cache, go to advance, wipe dalvik.
then flash zeus build 5.2 stock.
zeus uses voodoo file sytem (ext4) ..
victory uses stock uckl2 rfs file system. that is why hdmi output is not broken.
read my help page a few times..it should help clear things up...there are some links on there that will be helpful

yes. root is not actually in the kernel for use. its a script that moves it to the rom where it stays. the root kernel is only needed for 1 boot. its the only way to move a file with root privilege before you gain root privilege for the user.
I was working on a oneclick root kernel package and an update.zip to return You to the stock kernel and update su but my update script keeps getting parsing error. I have to do it all over again in a different text editor... lame. the update.zip would be good even for custom roms because I added vold.fstab from the stock rom which will fix sdcard mounting if it was changed for a Rogers kernel.

Which method are you using to get root and CWM recovery? It sounds like you are trying to use the old method of installing the modified 3e recovery and then using an update.zip. There is an updated way to do this with AT&T 2.3.6, and the old way doesn't quite work the same anymore. Let me know which method you're trying so I know where to direct you from there.
EDIT: Since I'm pretty sure that you are using the old method from stock Froyo to get root and CWM recovery, take a look at this thread. It's a how-to that explains most of the ways to get root and CWM recovery on 2.3.6.:

It sounds like the old way using an update.zip. In Froyo, we used to replace the stock recovery with a 3e recovery that would allow unsigned files to be flashed. Then we'd flash an update.zip that contained CWM recovery. Just curious, how did you root, and is this AT&T Gingerbread?
I'd read through that how-to thread I posted. If you can use Heimdall or Odin, there are some quick ways to get CWM recovery. In that thread, I've also outlined how to do it yourself on stock 2.3.6.

To get Gingerbread with CWM recovery for flashing roms, you could flash Option C or Option D from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1613523
Or, if you prefer Heimdall, qkster has some nice one-click packages. There are links for those in the first thread I gave you.
If you already have root (How did you root, again?), then you could just flash one of the Gingerbread kernel / CWM recovery packages from here.:

Before you go any further, we need to investigate something. First, let's confirm that you are on AT&T 2.3.6, because most of us haven't found or made a working one-click program to root stock 2.3.6 directly. Can you go to Settings / About Phone and tell me what is listed under "Baseband version"?
If you can do that to confirm that this is AT&T 2.3.6, I'd really like to know what program you used. Or did you root the phone before you were on Gingerbread?
Any of those links that I've given you in the last post will give you CWM (clockwork) recovery to install different roms. An easy way would be to do Option C or Option D at this one. Either one will do. Here's the link again.:

Okay, cool. You're definitely on AT&T Gingerbread. If you figure out how you rooted, let us know. If you flash Option C or Option D at the last link I gave you - again - then you'll be able to flash other roms.
Okay !! Thats So Much !! ))
