Feeling dumb, but I have successfully rooted and loaded (multiple times) ROMS on my Droid Incredible. Though I can't seem to get ROM manager to load a downloaded (CM7) rom onto my captivate - YES the phone is rooted .
I think i'm missing the bootloader, but i'm unsure. All the phone does is go to "Samsung Recovery Utils" and offers the following options only
*reboot system now
*reinstall packages
*delete all user data
*delete cache data
*format internal sd-card
Can anyone tell me what i'm doing wrong or point me to a thread that doesn't just say "download rom, install from SD card and done"?
let me give you a hint. there is a sticky section.....read

Going from Stock Froyo 2.2 to CM7. but when i go into the boot screen it's blue and gives me the options above. Then when I press the "reinstall updates" I get a
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed"
I must be doing something just simple and stupid, but thought i'd ask anyways. I'll try to find the sticky and see if it tells me something i haven't tried. Thanks!

@TRusselo: I've tried your guide step by step and I still end up at the Android system recovery and not CWM. Is there a step I might be missing? I downloaded the links you gave, followed all instructions and still same problem.
Thanks alot for the guide, if it worked i'd be even happier about it.

I tried that multiple times.
my understanding is the text at that point should be green, but it's still blue and gives the same exact error. "E:failed to verify whole-file signature E:signature verification failed"
Alright, I tried the Heimdall version which shows more promise, i'm just now unable to boot into any recovery. I hold the volume buttons and power for the 3-5 seconds and it boots to a boot screen with "TALON" on it. but nothing else from there.
Am I missing something else?
to first issue.... you followed the wrong link in my signature....
" 3e recovery fix " is what you were looking for.... since you were having truoble with 3e recovery.... thought that would be self explanatory.....
make sure usb debugging is ONturn OFF anti-virus for 5 minutes or until reboot
plug in phone.
click the bat file in this file.
you will have THE SAME RECOVERY with NO error
signature verification pass...
flash any update.zip package
but since you have a custom kernel with cwm now.....
What heimdall method are you talking about? for recovery? for flashing roms? what are you talking about. heimdall can do alot of stuff. did you upgrade bootloaders? or??
keep trying the button combo.. if it turns on, it will go into recovery.
Please search before posting, on that note thread closed.

Do you think its wise for him to flash a custom rom if he cant figure out why hes getting the signature failure?
Not trying to be a **** here.. but you should really read through the forums and then read them again before you start flashing custom roms.. Just saying.

You have to re-install packages twice before cwm takes. And the update.zip on the root of the SD
If then it doesn't take, delete the update.zip. then flashclockwork again via RM and make sure the update.zip is again on the internal SD. then try reinstall packages twice. again. Worked everytime for me. Should be same for you

Not with a failed signature verification. That means he's on 3e recovery and needs to flash a different kernel in order to get CWM recovery. I agree that if you don't read the forums and know this flashing will lead to trouble.

Working with the stock blue 3e-recovery.
Looks like you need to re install modded 3e recovery. The Super Thread in the Dev section has links to the download for it. That or you can use SGS kernel flasher to flash the Froyo CWM kernel (assuming your on Froyo/stock). Also found in the Super Thread. Good Luck!

Hi all -
Thanks for the wealth of knowledge. I have been rooted and successfully been running CM10 for about a month and a half now. I decided to check out the changelog for the latest nightly and decided to upgrade via the CM upgrade tool (to cm-10.1-20130109-NIGHTLY-d2vzw.zip).
When rebooting into Android System Recovery, I try to 'apply update from external storage' and run gapps but receive the error: E: failed to verify whole-file signature and E: signature verification failed.
I've run into all sorts of issues, so I wanted to wipe. I wiped and now I am running into a few issues I was hoping someone could assist:
- I cannot access my Google Account (add it, access Play, etc.)
- My 4g signal strength is very poor compared to earlier versions.
Attached are two screenshots to give you an idea what I am working with.

You chose the wrong option. While in CWM, you were supposed to select "Install zip from sd card"

Do you actually have the Play Store and Google Apps in your app drawer? If not, you need to install the GApps along with the rom.
If you do have the Play Store but can't sign in, try wiping data for Play Store and also Google Services Framework in Settings/Apps

Good point, I actually didn't try that.
I think If I was booting into CWM, I would have had the option.
I ended up getting frustrated, went back to stock, and will try it fresh.
Thanks for the help Slim.
It sounds like you were in stock recovery. Cwm must be installed manually.

No problem, I'm on TW so I don't have any experience with the CM upgrade tool. Just a reminder, make sure to use CWM 6.0.2.3 or TWRP 2.3.3 for AOSP JB 4.2 roms.
So I installed this ROM last night which went smoothly. A few posts down there is a link to gapps which I donwloaded. There are the steps that I took:
Put the .zip on my flash card (gapps-jb-20121212-signed.zip)
Booted into recovery
Selected "apply update from external storage"
Pointed it to the .zip
The install process starts. It fails saying "failed to verify whole-file signature" and "signature verification failed". Installation aborted.
Do I have the correct process for installing these?
Am I using the incorrect gapps? Seems to be why most people have this issue. I read the thread and as far as I can tell it is supposed to be the correct one. I didnt' hear of anyone else complaining about it.
Thanks in advance...
Dustin
You have to boot into Custom recovery, and then, select 'Install zip from sdcard', then flash the gapps. Like you did it when you've installed the ROM. But, now, you're using CM10 recovery instead the Atrix 2 Bootstrapper.

Yeah, those are the correct gapps for your ROM, but it should say something along the lines of "install zip from SD card" or something like that. Also, wipe cache and dalvik before flashing.

Aah, thanks fellas. I think I see what was going on. If I held the Up/Down arrows before betting the motorola boot screen, it would put me into what looked like the stock motorola. If I did it after the motorola logo appeared, I got into a different looking recovery that had the options that you guys described.

Sounds like you've got it. If I understand correctly from what I've read, the reason the stock recovery is still there is due to the locked bootloader. Any custom recovery for this phone has to be installed on the system partition. So after installing a custom recovery, you'll have 2 recoveries. One before the boot process starts, and one is a hijack that happens just after the Motorola logo appears. That is, if I understand it right. If anyone wants to correct me or further clarify, feel free....

Tried downloading the file to get around the DM-verity boot loop linked in the guide a couple times thinking it may have got corrupt downloading or transferring however nothing has changed.
flashing with TWRP worked fine, and for the sake of curiosity if maybe it was just having an issue with .zips and i should re-flash,
i attempted to install the SU file also linked in the guide linked below. however that was successful.
i have not attempted to fully re-start the phone as its been ages since i last owned, and rooted an android device. so I'm un-sure if the DM-Verity thing will lock me out of getting back into TWRP or not.
This is as far as it gets when attempting to install the .zip to fix DM-verity

I have the EXACT same error, I followed the steps and I'm not new at all to rooting Samsung devices.
I believe the error is that they tell you to flash SuperSU first, on my girlfriends' s6 this wasn't necessary.
I have wiped data and factory reset, reflashed TWRP etc etc etc, I can't get this dm-verity to flash! I rebooted into system and everything seems to work OK though, I just installed the XPosed framework and it's booting again now so I believe that maybe because you first flashed the SuperSU this prevents the dm-verity stuff to work?
Anyone else have any idea?

then just goes to a page that says ":An error occurred.

If you are the system administrator of this resource then you should check the error log for details.
Faithfully yours, nginx."
I've been trying for a couple hours to download it.
So right now I have a phone that I can't use, really need to fix this.
Updated zip
Ok guys, I've been working on a better zip that fixes the "Kernel is not SE Android enforcing" and also doesn't disable Force Encrypt. My reasoning is that it can interfere with "fully encrypting the phone" functionality which is required by some companies when registering your email. Anyway, if you wish to bring it back, just copy over 01-opt-encrypt and put it in patch.d folder.

I think it might work fine since all it does to stop the warning is to inject an echo command to the kernel. So in theory it should work. If it fails, the system isn't changed.

Tks forn the quick reply.
One more question, what partition and (what files) do I need to backup in case something unexpected happened.
