(Q) how do you like your skyrocket? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Im currently on the infuse but im gonna be upgrading using my moms upgrade ( ill just buy her a cheap flip phone since thats what she likes ) the skyrocket looks pretty attracting...similar screen, but with alot better hardware
so i have some questions...answer what ever questions you want, i have a basic feel from looking at specs but i want actual user refrences:
1) How smooth does the phone run?
2) how is the devolpment scene?
4) how many custom roms are there-not ports?
5) how do you like lte?
6) whats your favorite part of the phone-what do you hate the most?
7) hows battery life?
8) how much do you think the price will drop once the skyrocket hd is released?
9) would the hd be able to run the same roms with out porting? I know we wont really know until its released but just curious
10) would you recommend this phone to a friend? lol had to ask it
Thanks to everyone who takes the time to answer my questions

1) How smooth does the phone run? Very smooth, even on stock, but you make it crappy if you have too much going on. As with anything.
2) how is the devolpment scene? It's good considering the new chipset.
4) how many custom roms are there-not ports? Enough to feed addiction, if that's why you're asking.
5) how do you like lte? Don't have LTE in my area so can't say.
6) whats your favorite part of the phone-what do you hate the most? Best part is the screen size, worst part is the screen resolution (alternative is to increase the resolution using DPI apps.)
7) hows battery life? This isn't exactly an objective question, but I've seen ranges from 6 hours - 24 hrs.
8) how much do you think the price will drop once the skyrocket hd is released? Generally the price drops about $50 from contract price. More if it's a promotion.
9) would the hd be able to run the same roms with out porting? I know we wont really know until its released but just curious. You're right so can't say.
10) would you recommend this phone to a friend? If my friend had an infuse, no I wouldn't recommend it because of the new exynos chips that will be coming soon and the S4 chips that are coming. If my friend was impatient and rich enough then yes, I would. If my friend had a large enough hand then I would suggest trying the note first then getting the skyrocket.
Good luck with your decision.

1) How smooth does the phone run?
Extremely smooth. It's the fastest I've ever owned.
2) how is the devolpment scene?
Excellent. So many options, it just keep getting better and better.
4) how many custom roms are there-not ports?
Too many. I make nandroid back-ups everyday just to try them all out as they're released.
5) how do you like lte?
I live in Michigan and it's neck and neck, sometimes faster than my home cable connection.
6) whats your favorite part of the phone-what do you hate the most?
It hate the lack of stock camera features like zoom, but this can be fixed with roms lol
7) hows battery life?
Sucks on stock rom better keep it on the charger! However, last an entire day with NexusM0D v2.0 installed.
8) how much do you think the price will drop once the skyrocket hd is released?
Never heard of Skyrocket HD, but knowing AT&T it will probably become free with a two-year contract.
9) would the hd be able to run the same roms with out porting? I know we wont really know until its released but just curious

Yep... this or the Droid Razr Maxx (on the more expensive Verizon)

You can zoom in/out with the camera the same way you zoom in/out on a webpage; pull apart the screen zooms in, pinch the screen zooms out. Unless I'm completely mistaken.
This phone is awesome! Definitely the nicest and fastest phone I've ever had.

Will the new Exynos chips support LTE? I am thinking about getting the Skyrocket, but one of the things that I was told was that the SR isn't as good as the other SGS2 due to the chips (Exynos being way better than the Qualcomm chips). And how soon? wondering if I should just wait to get that phone or not (Plan on buying a phone within the next 6 months)

Volume controls the zoom!
And I love the phone.. LTE is kick ass where it's available!!
Personally, I think the screen is great. Looking forward to either Dev rom that's asop, or official ICS.

1) Very smooth. This is probably the smoothest Android phone I know of next to the Galaxy Nexus.
2) You can go to the development forum and see what's available yourself. In my opinion, it's not so good, but the Skyrocket is still fairly young.
4) N/A
5) It's fine. I don't do anything that really requires that high of a speed, though.
6) My favorite part is its smooth performance. Worst is I hate how I'm constantly losing my place in my browser/apps because they're killed too quick. That's more an Android issue than Skyrocket, though.
7) I'm a superheavy user -- my battery life on the Skyrocket is 5-6 hours. For comparison, I also got roughly 5-6 hours on the Samsung Captivate, 6-7 hours on the old WinMo smartphones, 11-13 hours with the iPhone, and 13+ hours with Nokia Symbian phones.
8) Probably $100-$150
9) N/A
10) Assuming that friend is comfortable with Android, then yes.

I'm Coming from a Nexus S... what do you recommend?

I love my nexus S. I have yet to sell it. however i picked up a brand new captivate for only 200$ on craigslist still sealed. I love the screen, and how its bigger than the nexus S and the shape is somewhat normal as well. I also cant stand only having edge with my Nexus S (im on at&t). My questions to the Captivate community are what are
1. What are the best roms for this thing that will give me a "gingerbread" expereince.
2. What is the highest possible overclocking Kernel? I know this thing will do 1Ghz, i currently have my Nexus at 1.3
3. How is the battery life? The nexus has a 1500 battery... Im barley getting thru the day with moderate use.
Isn't the screen the same size????
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I896 using Tapatalk
I suggest switching to T-Mobile haha jk. I think the highest overclock I've seen is 1.4 or 1.6ghz. I think the screen is the same size if I'm not mistaken.

Oh yeah and my batter does fine usually, I'm usually around 40 percent at the end of the day with moderate use.

Go back to the Nexus S.
Froyo is the best you're going to get at the moment. There are a few to try, some are better than others it seems to be phone related.
Moderate use is subjective as well, depending on the rom, kernel and modem setup some people say they get a whole day. Personally, I have the worst luck with the I9000 roms my phone just doesn't like them . YMMV.

Thats what i was thinking, the captivate is a downgrade mainly due to a lack of official froyo/gingerbread.

1. There is none yet. You'll have to use a custom theme.
2. I've seen 1.6. It's rare though, most stay at 1.2/1.3.
3. My battery life is great, I get about 20 hours. It's subjective, of course.
Also, WHY. I'd kill for a Nexus, even with edge only.

...What? Let me get this straight, you want to maximize your battery life to last longer than a day, but you also want to overclock your phone as much as possible and download stuff over 3g.. Reminds me of my coworker, who wanted a new car that was fast and nimble, but also big enough to carry a family and get good mileage, and had to be luxurious and exclusive, but also had to be cheap and affordable.
If you're going for battery life, you're probably better off flashing back to stock 2.1 JH7. In my experience, all of the 2.2 roms drain battery much faster due to either being tweaked for performance, or just being buggy from being built on top of leaked/unfinished/buggy firmware.
You won't find a gingerbread experience on the Captivate. The best you can hope for is a rom with a 2.3 skin (gingerbread keyboard, launcher). The cyanogenmod devs are working on a 2.3 port for the galaxy s series, but they're having major problems with it so don't expect it anytime soon.
What do I recommend? You return to the Nexus S immediately.

That's a frigging riot...lmfao on that...It's a downgrade because it doesn't have a "official 2.2 release"..Bull Hockey...I wouldn't load a official release on my phone ever again...It ain't worth it..Those running stock can only dream that their phones ran as good as what most of ours do...and look 1/2 as good...
Get on the developers forum...look over all of the roms available..and pick one to try...and read up on it...
1...this phone does 1ghz...out of the box...I've seen folks running as high as 1.5 1.6 stable..over clocked and under volted
2...What programs are you possible running where you need more...
3..As to what will do the best for you...that will entirely be up to the chips in your phone...they all perform differently...same for battery life...same for down load speeds...
4...You can make your phone into what ever you want...and for the money..I'll take the Captivate over the Nexus any day..
If you actually want a rom that is all institutional green...go for it...(gag) but you are short changing yourself...since you have 1 of the best 4" displays in your hands..
Are the phones perfect...HA...nope...but they can be made to perform great...and look fantastic..and that's what it's all about..The means to have it this way has been posted...all you have to do is start researching for yourself..decide what you want..and start downloading..

Should I sell G2X and get Galaxy S II?

Hey.
Should I sell G2X and get Galaxy S II?
Is it worth it?
What are some points where G2X is better than SGS II....or any flaws you know about SGS II?
Thanks.
If you fast forward the clock about a month from now...and you factor in the probability of an official gb release and give the devs here a short time with that release, I think any spec advantage of the S2 would end up being just a side-grade. It would make much more sense to hang out a little, enjoy the g2x as it is bound to get better and better. And save the pennies up for the next upgrade to a quad core phone. I really doubt you would see any "real-world" difference in performance between the 2 phones.
Of course, depending on the severity of your screen bleed. If it's very minor like mine is, then it won't matter. Mine is so minor, I only see it visible when I'm in clockwork recovery screen. Whoopdidoo. But some others here have claimed their phone leaks all around the screen. Of course, I have yet to see any screenshots or pictures of this, so I don't buy into a lot of the "poor me" stories.

I have both and I can tell you this. SGS2 has no lag anywhere. It's the most responsive phone out there. Engadget review even says it is "Class-leading speed and responsiveness". I have installed 150+ apps. As soon as I go in the App Manager and every app and their icons are already loaded; same goes for creating an Application shortcut. There is zero lag when installing apps, period. Swiping notification bar up and down extremely smooth while installing apps. I can be copying many files in background and still be able to use the phone or play games like normal. Wait till Gingerbread for Tegra 2 then we can compare, but I doubt it will be as lagfree as SGS2. Most of those I mentioned can't be done without delays on G2X.
If you want to know more about SGS2, check out 1080p Flash videos playing in browser or 20 opened browser tabs playing Megaupload videos on SGS2.
I have 241 apps installed here and don't have any lag whatsoever.

Yes you should.
Same phone with slightly better screen, gimped with touchwiz interface. And Samsung doesn't exactly have the best track record.
Think about buying a used car. You could get a really reliable one. But you could also get a lemon. You know what problems your current phone has. And I'd say we're all pretty confident the G2x's issues will be ironed out very soon.
I would stick with the g2x.

I second this. I tried rooted custom roms and I ran into a bunch of constant reboots and overheating issues. Now I'm on the stock rooted 2.2 rom and I couldn't have been more please. My only gripe is that the GPS takes a little long to lock, but once it locks the phone works flawlessly. I would not spend any money on another phone unless it is something truly spectacular or its the next upcoming Nexus phone. The G2x has the specs, we just need the software to be ironed out. I honestly love this phone. I have a slight bit of screen bleed, but nothing drastic.

I'm gonna keep my G2x for a couple more months, then sell it on the bay or CL. Next, I'll use that money to finance my purchase of the Samsung Hercules, which be launching on T-mobile in late August/mid September. The specs on the Hercules put the SGS2, Sensation and G2x to shame imo.
Is the g2x ever going to get gingerbread? It's been after "before summer" for a long time. I haven't heard anything about it in weeks.

How does Touch Wiz gimp Android. The original Touch Wiz gimped Android but the latest version is probably the least intrusive out of any custom UI. If you don't like the looks of Touch Wiz then simply load ADW or LP. Its what most of us do on our G2X since vanilla is a little boring. Once you load your launcher of choice, Touch Wiz becomes non existant except for the features that do nothing but improve Android in a great way such as drop down notification toggles/settings, contacts list that is one of the best out there. I love how you can swipe right on a contact to call them and swipe left to start a text. So in the end. I ask you. Can you name 3 things that would get on your nerves with Touch Wiz after you load a launcher?

Why would you have to switch to ATT? I've said it before and Ill say it again. I know most of you dont believe me that my step father heads Samsungs corporate insurance division in the US. Yes, Samsung has its hands in the insurance business. Anyway, he hears a few things here and there and he recently told me, the reason why the GSII is taking so long to hit the US shores is because Samsung wants a simultaneous launch across the major carriers. He didn't know if T Mobile was included in this but he said Verizon, ATT and Sprint will all launch on the same day.

The SGS2 just got its fourth update in two months. This one improved battery life, increased Wi-Fi signal strength, and sped up GPS lock time; three things users were asking for. Another update's due out by the end of the month bringing the phone up to 2.3.4 and integrating Google+ in to the Social Hub. How's that LG update coming along?

[Q] Considering Thunderbold

I'm looking to move to Verizon (for coverage reasons - I travel in the rural midwest and plains and have issues with AT&T coverage).
I currently have a Samsung Captivate, running a Gingerbread custom rom. I have no desire to get another Samsung phone - there post release ROM development is non-existent. Don't get me started.
It seems that all of the Android phones currently on Verizon have some issue (from my perspective), but the closest to being a good all-around smartphone is the Thunderbolt.
The primary issue with the TBolt is battery life (from what I can tell).
Here's my question:
Using a stock battery and running a custom rom is it reasonable to get 14 hours of battery life with the following usage:
- 2 hours talk time
- 1 hour email
- 30 minutes web browsing
- 1 hour streaming music (OK, I could do without this)
[edit] From browsing the TBolt Dev Forums, I am leaning towards the Cl3anTh3ory ROM. [/edit]
I would have 2 email accounts - 1 GMail, set up for push notification, 1 IMAP that would poll every 30 min (using K9). I have 6 GCal's to sync and just over 300 contacts.
If I can get 14 hours, here's a follow up question: would you personally wait for the next round of phones to be announced (Sept and Oct) or would you go ahead with a TBolt for $69 (from Amazon with 2 yr contract)?
thanks,
Any future HTC released for Verizon is going to have the same basic guts as an EVO 3D with LTE. At this point, the Tbolt is right in the prime of development. The newer bases are much better in every area and I have no problems getting the kind of life you need doing a bit more than what your asking. My setup is in my sig. Being mostly on cdma, as it sounds like you would be, will stretch your battery even further. And if the stock battery doesn't do the job, the 1750mAh unit that's the same size certainly will.
More than possible. Check out gingeritis 3d and chingys 7/17 radio leak. I get over 24+ hours with average use
Sent from my TBolt using my f***king thumbs...
Using custom roms, definitely
id wait for the tbolt successor or the gs2 to come tbh.
myself, I would probably wait and see what htc announces next, or maybe the bionic if it ever hits the shelves. Depending on those releases, yeah the tbolt is a great phone that should meet your needs. It's not hard for me to swap batteries if needed, but with the newer roms, battery life is improving.

Depending on those releases, yeah the tbolt is a great phone that should meet your needs. It's not hard for me to swap batteries if needed, but with the newer roms, battery life is improving.

by the time the bionic comes it will be outdated. verizon waits too long to release phones.
I'm assuming the bionic will have locked boot loaders, which a deal breaker for me. Also, not sure about a 4.5" screen... I actually prefer 4", but can live with 4.3". But 4.5"? Guess it depends on overall device size and weight.
It'd possible on monolithth3ory or cl3anth3ory.

Those are not the only two ROMs that get that life.
Come on off the bandwagon.
this is the best phone ever, and ive went through alot.. sure people complain about this and that. but ultimately imho i think its the best verizon phone hands down and built rock solid (physically) and great dev support, i bought the extended battery and never looked back.. my only problem is which theory rom to run sense or aosp lol.. but i think from att to verizon + LTE would be a great upgrade for you =]

AT&T is no competition to Verizon.
They lack the customer service and the network to compete.

The only phones rumored to have larger than 4.3" screens so far are 2 Samsung phones, and they are expected to be similar to the size of current 4.3" phones because the extra screen size will most likely be in the area of the current buttons at the bottom since ice cream sandwich will not need them. The Bionic has been confirmed to be 4.3"

Agreed. Although I haven't really had major issues with customer service.
I have pretty much the same use as you and I am getting about 1 1/2 days out of my phone. sometimes 2 days between charges and I am on stock battery. '
I am running the monolithth3ory rom and it is great so far. I also have ultimate juice defender running.
so get it, root it, and love it! I sure do

Think its time, almost decided to sell the charge

I've tried, Debated, installed, formated, reinstalled, reflashed....every different ROM / kernal / radio that I can find on the internet for this phone.
Its a great phone for a user that will NEVER want anything more than a Phone....but......
.....I turned on my INCREDIBLE today and updated it to the latest MIUI and just generally brought it back to current ROM technology and was just amazed...
...so like I said...I gave the Charge a shot, nobody got behind it like I hoped and i'll sell it...use the incredible til I decide on weather or not to get the nexus prime, or I dare say it an iPhone (highly unlikely) but i'm tired of all the fragmentation in the droid world...was WAY WAY WAY better when there were just 5 or 6 "KINGS" out there....
I really don't know what the carriers or device makers are thinking...did apple's success on ONE device not teach the industry anything? Its a better model long term...PICK ONE maybe a few...but jesus...30 phones a year is ridiculous...does nothing besided upset your customers that you captured from a very real competitor....that is dagerous.
I'm still android...I just hope the nexus prime gets a HUGE following....just want a following that my Incredible still seems to have...but it is falling.
Anyway...i'm rambling and frustrated that my year and a half old phone can outperform my 4 month old phone in EVERY category but one 4G, which I can live without.
Haven't made the decision complete yet....but I just don't know what else to do...anybody feel the same?
Definitely feel the same man. Especially with soooooo many phones being released. Quality, not quantity.

Crazy you did this. I just traded my Charge for the Incredible 2 today to keep as my backup to the galaxy nexus. Charge got pretty pathetic.
Only outperforms because of 4g? Forgotten about our better screen, hdmi out, better camera and better audio chip, have we?
I definitely understand where you're coming from though. I used to have a fascinate which ended up getting all that good aosp stuff and for that reason (along with the form factor) part of me does regret switching the two.
I plan on doing something similar by selling the charge and using an old smartphone (Htc vogue with cm7 b*tch!) before getting the GN.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using Tapatalk
Yup same deal. This phone has a nice screen.. thatsit. M wife has my old incredible and I keep it up to date for her. Its so much better. It is the amoled one and it rocks. Ya charge has hdmi out.. when was the last time any of you actually used it for a purpose other than showing it off? Lol.
But why the nexus? Its another samsung ..been dissapointed with all samsungs so far. Who cares about ics . We are flashers we don't care about stock software. Besides.. I like gps's that work.. u know what im talking about.
The htc rezound is what im going for... gonna go back go my htc roots. Like you said.. the incredible has a huge following. Htc sense is bad ass and 3.5 is going to be sense sweetness. Before december there will be an ics rom for it..
Im done with samdung.....

I stick with this ****burglar of a phone because Ev-DO is garbage in my area whereas LTE is actually pretty easy to get ahold of. Also, I love having a Wolfson DAC and Voodoo Sound.
I got my buddy onto a DroidInc with CM and he really loves it, but it wouldn't have been the right decision for me. I'm paying Verizon prices for LTE, and it's pretty clear that being forced to tolerate a heaping helping of Samsung's incompetence is collateral damage from that choice.
In a year or whatever when this phone has finally evolved into a seasoned specimen that runs CM properly and is way out of the limelight, it will be seen positively -- people will be quick to recommend it as a solid phone with LTE, a good DAC, and a non-PenTile AMOLED screen that you can pick up on craigslist for about a hundred bucks.
"Just make sure you load CyanogenMod as soon as you get it home," they'll say. "The stock software is really a mess."
It's just too bad that most of us here voluntarily subsidized this flaming leprosy parade for $250+ and a monster contract.
The Charge is only my second Android phone. The Fascinate was my first. Although my experience is only based on Samsung, I still think Samsung offers superb phones and I will continue to buy them. I've played around with other phones. My brother had an old Eris and a buddy had an EVO off Sprint. I like the screens on Samsung better and I like how easy it is to Flash Roms. Its true that official OS releases are slow but I blame Verizon more than Samsung. Maybe I'm just lucky but I haven't had too many issues with my Charge and like it. I've enjoyed the screen, the audio, the physical buttons, and my phone runs pretty fast with lagfix. I have this phone tweaked out pretty good. Yes, it would be nice to have also but can't complain too much how it is running at present. I've experienced virtually none of the problems others report. I haven't had to turn my phone in to Verizon tech or anything .....same phone I got from the get go. I'm not oblivious to some of the complaints. I just don't have any of my own really. I like it although I will be going to the Nexus as soon as it comes out but not based on a dislike of my Charge. I just like to upgrade every year.

Yes screens on sammys are awesome. But easy to flash roms? No.its not hard I guess.. but compared to other phones its a *****.
Take the dinc for isntance. All roms flashes through rom manager. You have 50+ roms all instantly available to you. With the push of a single button you can load a new rom... don't like it and want your old one back? No problem push another button and go right back to what you were just running
Hell you could have a differrent rom for every day of the week if you wanted. Do a little playing with the other heavy hitting smartphones. Real playing .. buy one.. own it. Use it as your own. And you will agree.
The sole reason I got the samsung was so I could have first hand experience with one. I like to know about everything out there based on my own opinions and not others. I had friends with samsungs.. the captivate and the fascinate and one with the infuse. So I got the charge to see what the fuss was about.
The result of 6 months of ownership? Nice screen... the rest is **** tho
I've tried and tried to like it.. if there weren't so many other phones that were better, it would be a fantastic phone..
Samsung has disappointed me with their android devices. Just google "samsung gps problems". If your phone doesn't lock in <5 sec inside your house using standalone gps accurate to 3 feet.. why not? The other phones on the market do. Hell this one has actually locked on my position.. accurate to 10 feet.. and been moving with me down the road.. the only problem was it had me 500 miles away.. how is that even possible lol.
Ya.. this will be the last samsung phone I own. Will only own samsung tvs tho

He was referring to Super AMOLED Plus. And yes, Nexus has pentile, but from the reports that I've read, higher resolution at 720p seems to cover that up.

Yeah the screen on the Galaxy Nexus is going to be completely fine, I was referring to the Droid Charge's non-PenTile as a perk compared to other similiarly-valued Verizon devices -- specifically, the Bionic, the X2, the Fascinate, and the first-revision DroidInc.
I have the sneaking suspicion that once the Galaxy Nexus hits you're going to be able to buy secondhand Bionics, Charges, and Thunderbolts for pretty equivalent low prices. The GN looks killer, but its existence isn't going to retroactively remove lovely hardware features (S-AMOLED+, Voodoo Sound) from the Charge. And the Charge certainly sucks now, but it's only going to get better with time.
Funny how the people who pay the highest prices get the ****tiest experience, and the ones who saunter in a year late after the wonderful development community has beaten the phone into something usable get the best experience for the lowest price.

My phone "isn't charging very well" and I have a new one being mailed to me. So now my ebay listing will be for a "new droid charge" instead of a used one. Should pull 500 easy. Plenty to buy a rezound or prime off contract

Hardware is crap? Lololol.
So people are disappointed it's not a quad core phone with an 8mp camera, no sd card slot, no Exynos chip, and no keyboard(Wtf?). Seriously, the specs on the Galaxy Nexus are top notch. People just complain because it's not what they dreamed of.
Let's break it down.
-Galaxy Nexus has a 5mp camera. "o noes! No super high rez 8mp shooter!!!11! " Megapixels don't mean much. Example: the iPhone 4's and Galaxy S' 5mp cameras destroyed the Droid X's and Evo's 8mp camera. What mainly matters is the sensor.
-It has a TI OMAP 4460(I think) processor with an overclocked gpu. Almost no apps on the Market are optimized for multiple core processors. Up until recently, even our OS didn't take advantage of them. I think this is plenty.
-HD Super Amoled is pentile. Big whoop. With that pixel density, no one will notice. Let's see, what would you prefer? An HD Super Amoled screen or a slightly inferior S-LCD HD screen? Both will most likely have similar pixel densities.
-No SD card slot. How many times do you remove your SD card? I thought so.
-It has a barometer. Why? To get even more accurate GPS readings.
The only thing I hope for is that it has a great DAC like the Galaxy S and Droid Charge.

Question about this phone

Hey Guys,
I had a question about this specific phone, I have been using the myTouch 4G for over 3.5+ years, where I rooted the phone to run CM7.2. I saw this phone on sale for $139.99 and decided to try it out. I have been using it for a few days, it seems fast, but my biggest reason for retiring my original myTouch 4G was because it has been too long and the phone and hardware is basically becoming outdated.
I wanted to clarify, does this phone seem to still have a good life to it? Will there be future updates to install Jelly Bean? I honestly want a phone that will last me a long time (like my myTouch 4G did) and has the same neat features to it too. I am a college student, so I am looking for a solid daily driver at the end of the day to get my job done.

This is a great phone. Does it match up against the heavyweights? No, of course not. Will it get official Jelly Bean? No. Samsung quit developing it after 4.0.4. We have cm10, cm10.1, cm10.2, and cm11. There are issues with the builds past cm10, but nothing deal-breaking for me. There are issues with Kitkat, but the amazing devs are working on it and hopefully get those figured out.
If you don't mind rooting (and for this phone it's way easy, imo) and flashing, then there are a lot of excellent ROM's here. If you want official JB, then I would suggest looking elsewhere. I would recommend this phone (it's basically a smaller S2), but I've done a lot to it.

Thanks for responding! I really want to love and use this phone for the long run! I guess my only clarification is, is this phone a good long-term phone? I am open to rooting my phone, or am even more open to staying put with the Stock ROM (it doesn't seem to bother me so far...). I obviously want a phone that would last hardware wise, and I figured the dual-core snappy processor would be the biggest nudge, especially for the price range I managed to pick this up fore ($139.99) on Amazon.
Other than that, I think this might be a good phone. To start off, do you have any good recommended daily drivers like ROMs for this phone? Obviously, something fast, and consumes minimal battery life.
Also, since this phone is brand new, would rooting it void my warranty for the device? I had officially rooted my myTouch 4G after two full years (my warranty period was over).
Racing19969's AOKP Jelly Bean rom has been great to me. The only issue I've had is governor settings not sticking after a reboot.
As for the device itsself, battery life is a bit lacking IMO. I get about 10 hours with moderate use. Maybe 12 if I use it only when necessary, & I could kill it in less than 6 if gaming.
Other thing is the USB port is suceptible to damage w/the cable in. I'm on my 2nd warrantee replacement for this.
And finally, yes, rooting any device will void its' warrantee. (though I sent both of my broken ones back stock, but still rooted. No one seemed to notice. Shh!)

All that I would add to this is that if you want official JB and don't want to root and whatnot then you should give the galaxy s light sgh-t399 a look. Often priced at 149 (was this price on newegg recently). Quad core but otherwise similarly spec'd - 4 inch screen, 5mp camera, but the light also has LTE whereas the blaze does not.

Would the quad core processor make a giant difference in terms of performance compared to the Blaze? The Galaxy Light is listed as "1.4 GHz Quad Core" versus the Blaze, which is listed as "1.5GHz Dual Core". For a mobile phone, would the difference in performance be very big that I should consider switching? I don't mind spending $149 at all, just another $10 bump. But I wouldn't want to waste my time and money doing it if the performance was very minimal, and really did nothing for me.

I don't think it would be minimal- there should be architectural differences with the newer SoC (the light) beyond just clock speed that will positively impact performance. Having said that, there should be a performance gain with the quad - whether or not you would be able to notice that is really dependent on how you will use your phone. I believe the light's SoC uses smaller transistors (should be 28nm) vs the blaze's 45nm SoC which usually means better battery life (since the screens are the same). In addition, the light has a slightly larger battery (1800 vs the blazes 1750). If you live in an LTE area you shouldn't dismiss the light's LTE capability.
But there is ZERO development on the light now. Not even root. If that matters to you then the blaze would be a better choice. 4.4 is here, and the little issues with 4.4 will soon be worked out by some really cool guys dedicating their time for this community.
If price isn't an issue (over $10) then my recommendation would be this:
If root and development (getting 4.4 and possibly beyond) matter at all to you, then get the blaze.
If you need or want LTE, want a fully functional phone with JB (the barcode camera functionality and speakerphone are all I am aware of not working in the JB roms for the blaze), can live with touchwiz, and want the newer/more powerful/(slightly) better battery life device then get the light.

Just curios, why is there absolutely no development on the light? Speed is not a huge issue for me with the Blaze right now.
In all honesty, I rarely play video games on my phone, I usually use it as a device to keep me synced with my calendar, go on facebook/instagram/snapchat and text people. I use it to call occasionally for a couple of minutes, but other than that, I really am mostly browsing stuff that is about it. I personally dislike gaming on mobile phones (I might play Flow when I get super bored) but seriously, that is about it.
How would you guys consider the camera for the Blaze? I think the front camera is actually much better, right? Also, on the myTouch 4G, there was a little Light blinker for notifs, I realize the Blaze does not have that, but do other smartphones have that as well?
I really like this phone so far, will require some adjusting as I am used to pressing a physical button for the camera to open up, but it is totally fine.
As of right now, it looks like I am geared to sticking with this phone from everyone's suggestions.

There is no development on the light due to it just being so new. Also, the sub 199 phone market has just had some recent compelling phones enter this segment (the moto g is just one) so anyone who wanted to purchase a sub 199 phone perhaps already has. That's not to say that there will be always no development on the phone, but you are taking a chance if you buy it if you want a phone that has an active development community.
FWIW - I am thinking of picking up the light as a backup (since I gave my blaze to my cousin). If development ever takes off, that phone will be great. If not, if it at least gets root I will be happy with having wifi calling again.
The camera is passable, it's obviously nothing high end. I don't ever use the front camera - I'm just not a 'selfie' kind of person
Not many low end phones have a notification light, so I don't think the light has one either.
The blaze is a great little phone, and with a kick ass dev community, it should be running the latest android for awhile.

The Samsung Galaxy Light is actually priced for $169.99 (cheapest I found, which was on Amazon). I honestly don't feel like putting up another $30.00 for it, what do you guys think? At the end of the day, my needs seem pretty simple... As of right now ICS is doing me fine, might consider rooting my phone once I do officially get out of school again (most likely Spring break). Thoughts?
I am hoping to keep this phone for at least two years, or even more, as I personally don't "game" or take fancy smancy pictures, other than a couple of Instagram pictures, which are always filtered... (its true! ).
I'm itching for a new phone myself but my Blaze just keeps chugging along with all of the awesome devs kicking out sweet roms. I've got my eye on the N5 for my next phone but I just can't justify shelling out the cash when the Blaze is just fine for my daily needs. If/when the few lingering bugs are work out in the KitKat roms (speaker phone & scanner) I will be in hog heaven!

Haha, that is great to hear. I am thinking the Blaze will be it, for a low price, I think I got a good bang for the buck.

Just wanted to say, to say, so far so good with this phone. I think it is official, I will stick with this phone as my new daily driver.
