Hi all.. I couldnt post this in the Dev section bec I'm a noooob, but I hope this is the second best place... apologies if it isnt.
I am not sure when ICS is coming out exactly, but I already have my i727 Skyrocket easy rooted, and now looking to install this ROM: Sky Ice Cream Sandwich (2.3.6) from rootzwiki, and was wondering if this is the best one to install with ICS... really seems like the only one from my searches, but there arent many actual tested comments on it for some reason.
Also, do all these ROMs that have "tethering" mean you still have to pay ATT for the additional data fees, or are there ROMs that work around that as well? I wouldnt even be using it that often, but when I do need it, a nice 20mpbs wifi freedom would be very useful without having to worry about going over some data limit.
Thanks!

first of all, this doesnt belong in dev section, because you arent developing anything. its a question, it belongs right where it is.
secondly, why dont you just go into our dev section and read about sky ice cream sandwich there? no need to go to rootz.
also, it isnt really ICS, its gingerbread themed to look like ICS.
I only went to rootz bec it was the first place I came upon while searching for ROMs for the i727.
Ok let me make my actual questions simpler for anyone who would like to answer:
1. Is Sky Ice Cream Sandwich (2.3.6)the best overall and stable ROM out there that resembles ICS? I understand this is a subjective query, but I am interested in some thoughts.. I see lists of other ROMs but no opinions on comparisons here or anywhere.
2. Is there any ROM that makes tethering 100% free, including data charges.
3. How will the advent of the real ICS affect the current ROMs... i.e., will new ROMs take advantage of something they could not at the current moment? I am assuming since the hardware is staying the same, the release of ICS will have no bearing at all on any current ROMs.
Thanks.
I know with the tethering part I have Sprint and I dont pay to have tethering. The Rom I have lets me do it and it cost NOTHING
Just make sure you dont go over your data plan

dont know why you would link me that thread. i am fully capable of making my own roms.
as for tethering, yes, nearly every rom you find in dev section enable tethering. they do not require anything from AT&T, as that is the point, we dont want to pay AT&T twice for the data that we have already.
LOL no clue why it linked you... was trying to tell Dathaeus to look and read for himself. I have flashed your ROMS before great work by the way

I know they allow tethering, but I have heard many people who say after doing so they got warnings from ATT about needing to increase their data plan etc etc... also that there is some software that ATT looks at to see if the data is being used by a browser or by plain texting/emails only.
So you are saying we can do gigs of transfer a month with a custom ROM tether and ATT will be none the wiser? Then that is truly awesome.

Is there seriously no way to avoid this or at least make it harder for them to find out? Like switching APNs or something?
For instance, isn't there an iPhone app that has a setting that lets you appear not to be tethering?

I read from @AdamOutler that AT&T can still track tethering by seeing that their data is being used through a computer browser's UserAgent. So as long as you change your Chrome/Firefox UA to whatever your mobile browser's UA is, they would have no way of telling.

Best I've used so far was [ROM] Sky Ice Cream Sandwich (2.3.5 <<WHAT DOES THIS SAY?) Multiple Flavors 1/24/12
Very quick. Battery life was about average. Seanscreams seems to be a very helpful developer.
I'm currently using
[ROM][UXKJ2]Buoyancy v1.3.0||Rogers/AT&T||[1/25/12]
Which provides the best battery life so far and comes with a ics launcher, but seemed kind of buggy. I'm using the tw launched that was also included. Jomeister did a good job and included a good kernel and uc script.

I'm not sure on the specifics cuz as I said, I read that from someone else. It could be a mixture of the UA and amount of data used. But let me try to find the thread where I read it and I'll link ya to it...

<snipped because I just repeated what plwalsh88said> That way when you tether, if you were using a different APN and your browser says it is on a phone, maybe it would not be possible to be noticed?
This site says how to do this.

I thought they also cross reference data transfer per month to discover people who tether... I guess it may depend on the plan you have/allotted data per month?

like it or not ICS is a really good upgrade over GB, I personally don't care much for the colors they decided to use, but it works really well. it took me a long time to accept it
you can still find the GB roms though, maybe not so many still in development but I imagine it's pretty hard to make GB much better than what we have already.
I agree. I found it hard to let go of GB because I was on it for so long, but ICS is just so much better IMO in just about every way.
ICS grows on you. I didn't want to move from GB at first either. I'd rather get used to ICS now than later though. It's what android will be like for quite a while.
There's new stuff everyday: HBO Go finally works on ICS, the Nova Launcher finally allows a vertical scrolling drawer, etc.

Hey guys!, I recently purchased an Atrix2, at the moment I can't decide if I'm more worried or excited (locked bootloader and all), lets just say I'm glad my investment wasn't too big. I'm coming from a Desire Z which was totally and completely hacked way before I bought one (Ended up owning 3 of them, 1 of which didn't have warranty... Ended up being a big investment, long story), so hopefully stock isn't too bad . I have some questions tho and if anyone would be willing to answer I'd be grateful, I've been lurking around here for a few days, if these questions have already been asked I apologize.
When my Atrix2 arrives what should I do with it, root it and install a 2.3.x rom, leave it stock, not root it, install an ICS leak?
How does overclocking work, I'd like to get it to 1.2ghz (GS2 speed), are we able to do that on a locked bootloader?
I know there's been no official word, but do you think the Atrix2 will get JellyBean? When?
How close are we to cracking that bootloader? I've been reading the threads and they're kinda hard to follow, there seems to be massive news on the horizon and everything looking good but then another thread says the complete opposite, how close are we to cracking that sucker open, and in your opinion do you think Moto will unlock the Atrix2 with their web unlock tool that voids the warranty?
I noticed there are 2 hardware versions (ME and MB I think), is everything compatible with each other or do I have to specifically make sure each rom and hack is for my version?
From long term owners how do you like the phone?
From people using ICS how is it? Compared to the AOSP and AOKP roms for other devices, is it..... bearable so to speak ?.
How many CM7/AOSP like mods can we have, I really hate using phones without the widgets in the pulldown status bar.
Coming from a very thick 3.7" 512mb ram 800mhz CPU (Tho capable of running JellyBean fairly well, and being QWERTY to be fair), I think the leap to 4.3" 1gb ram and 1.2ghz dual core will be very nice. The locked bootloader is a big let down but I hope the geniuses that are the Android Dev community come up with some wonderful hack and we're all running CM10 very soon, or at least that the ICS build is good enough and we can get some decent mods.

A) This is entirely your preference.
How does overclocking work, I'd like to get it to 1.2ghz (GS2 speed), are we able to do that on a locked bootloader?
A) See my guides in my signature -for Overclocking
I know there's been no official word, but do you think the Atrix2 will get JellyBean? When?
A) I seriously doubt it. We're one of the last to receive ICS, and still waiting for the official OTA to roll out in the US.
A) The developers have been working on this for almost a year, doesn't look promising at this point, but as soon as some advances are made, you'll read about them here. No, Moto will likely NOT add the A2 to the devices list for unlocking.
I noticed there are 2 hardware versions (ME and MB I think), is everything compatible with each other or do I have to specifically make sure each rom and hack is for my version?
A) The MB865 is intended for use on AT&T within the USA, while the ME865 has a different radio, sound device, WIFI chipset, and a few other hardware differences. It is basically a different device, with "close enough" hardware. I would not try using things from one for the other though, because even the ME865 has 3 different versions, with some small differences in hardware, but you also really need to watch for firmware compatibility.
From long term owners how do you like the phone?
A) My opinion is its decent, we have amazing devs, and they've done so much for this device.
From people using ICS how is it?
A) ICS completely changes the phone, in every way that's good.
Compared to the AOSP and AOKP roms for other devices, is it..... bearable so to speak ?.
A) They are way better than stock Motorubbish ROM.
How many CM7/AOSP like mods can we have, I really hate using phones without the widgets in the pulldown status bar?
A) Most every custom ROM (if not all) available for the A2 has drop down toggles.

There's a couple of ROMs that still keep in tact some or most of the Blur apps and UI, but most are "de-blurred". One of my favorites was Lithium ROM and SCv6, but that's all based on personal preferences. Some are odexed, others de-odexed. Just browse through the development section and look at each of the ROM's threads, they'll all have screenshots, features, and installation instructions. Some are flash able zips, others are CWM backup images. Everything you'll need to know in deciding on a ROM is in the dev section. Nothing wrong with flashing and trying each of them out, until you find one you really like...
Edit: I just looked, and seems like there's about four ROMs that will require the user to be on the leaked ICS version before flashing there's still several great ROMs for GB though!

The official ICS OTA update will not allow you the ability to flash back to GB, at least not yet. With the "leaked" ICS, you can. But, trying with any of the newer leaked updates for ICS will turn your new phone into a new soft brick...

I believe there's only two ROMs that are built off the leaked ICS version (SCv7 and Lunar Eclipse, though there may be more- I haven't clicked the through the development section much lately) but just wait until you get your phone, and see what version it is. Likely it will be SEARET, but I'm not certain.

If you need an app to work, or your phone to fully work, don't use experimental builds... thought that'd be pretty obvious.
Also, questions belong in.... the questions section.

No, that wasn't a question, that was a suggestion.
He complains about an app not working while on a build where it's considered beta/alpha so I SUGGESTED to use a ROM that's fully functional such as gingerbread where everything works.

For people like myself Gingerbread isn't the best answer. I can't get my work email on a phone running Gingerbread due to security issues. So the better option would be why can't we force the manufactures and carriers to support the phones through the 2 year contract at which we sign. But that's why IF I buy another Android phone it will be a Nexus or I'll go back to Apple as much as I hate Apple users at least I know I'll get my updates to fix security problems.

Exactly. Unfortunately for us, the most Feature-Rich, stable phone with all the working bells and whistles for us is a GB ROM. With the release of the SU660 ICS ROM, I truly believe we'll hit a time in the near future (1-2 months) where we will have a stable, Feature-Rich ICS ROM for the G2X. That will lead to a very nice JB ROM once the devs exercise their brain muscle some (They are good at it, I'm just a wanna-be Dev.)
As it has always been for us, it's a waiting game. I'm confident we'll get there, but it's gonna be a while.

I have a question but yet a request to ROM and kernel developers.
I came here from the HTC First community, which has a descent size user base but base no Dev support, literally none. And I was wondering if anyone could take a look and see what they can do. If you can't, that's fine, but its a great device with lots of prospects if someone could get a custom ROM up and running. At least give it a look guys.
Much thanks from the whole HTC First community.
It's that bad over there huh? It runs near stock Android, right? Just use Xposed framework and set it up how you like it. That's what I would do, even if there were 100 custom ROMs available.
Nobody is going to build for a device they don't own, unless they have an extremely good reason to do so. When one builds a ROM and/or kernel, they build it to their liking - impossible if you don't even own the device.

Our point still stands. Asking in the Nexus 5 section won't change anything since nobody will develop for a device they don't have/care about.
If the people there want 5.0 that badly, maybe one of them should step up and do it.

That's a pretty crappy rationalization. Just cause you can do that with 4.4 people still want 5.0 right? Yeah. Keep talking lol

You made no mention of wanting 5.0 in the OP, you just said custom ROMs. I simply offered an alternative. Xposed is awesome, and you can use it to add a crap ton of features to the stock ROM.

That's what I used on my First. Xposed rocks! And no I just mentioned any custom ROM or kernel.
Yep, I think it's the single greatest Android mod ever conceived. Both of my Android phones have Lollipop available to them, yet both are staying on KitKat and Xposed is the primary reason why.
