Hi all.. I couldnt post this in the Dev section bec I'm a noooob, but I hope this is the second best place... apologies if it isnt.
I am not sure when ICS is coming out exactly, but I already have my i727 Skyrocket easy rooted, and now looking to install this ROM: Sky Ice Cream Sandwich (2.3.6) from rootzwiki, and was wondering if this is the best one to install with ICS... really seems like the only one from my searches, but there arent many actual tested comments on it for some reason.
Also, do all these ROMs that have "tethering" mean you still have to pay ATT for the additional data fees, or are there ROMs that work around that as well? I wouldnt even be using it that often, but when I do need it, a nice 20mpbs wifi freedom would be very useful without having to worry about going over some data limit.
Thanks!

first of all, this doesnt belong in dev section, because you arent developing anything. its a question, it belongs right where it is.
secondly, why dont you just go into our dev section and read about sky ice cream sandwich there? no need to go to rootz.
also, it isnt really ICS, its gingerbread themed to look like ICS.
I only went to rootz bec it was the first place I came upon while searching for ROMs for the i727.
Ok let me make my actual questions simpler for anyone who would like to answer:
1. Is Sky Ice Cream Sandwich (2.3.6)the best overall and stable ROM out there that resembles ICS? I understand this is a subjective query, but I am interested in some thoughts.. I see lists of other ROMs but no opinions on comparisons here or anywhere.
2. Is there any ROM that makes tethering 100% free, including data charges.
3. How will the advent of the real ICS affect the current ROMs... i.e., will new ROMs take advantage of something they could not at the current moment? I am assuming since the hardware is staying the same, the release of ICS will have no bearing at all on any current ROMs.
Thanks.
I know with the tethering part I have Sprint and I dont pay to have tethering. The Rom I have lets me do it and it cost NOTHING
Just make sure you dont go over your data plan

dont know why you would link me that thread. i am fully capable of making my own roms.
as for tethering, yes, nearly every rom you find in dev section enable tethering. they do not require anything from AT&T, as that is the point, we dont want to pay AT&T twice for the data that we have already.
LOL no clue why it linked you... was trying to tell Dathaeus to look and read for himself. I have flashed your ROMS before great work by the way

I know they allow tethering, but I have heard many people who say after doing so they got warnings from ATT about needing to increase their data plan etc etc... also that there is some software that ATT looks at to see if the data is being used by a browser or by plain texting/emails only.
So you are saying we can do gigs of transfer a month with a custom ROM tether and ATT will be none the wiser? Then that is truly awesome.

Is there seriously no way to avoid this or at least make it harder for them to find out? Like switching APNs or something?
For instance, isn't there an iPhone app that has a setting that lets you appear not to be tethering?

I read from @AdamOutler that AT&T can still track tethering by seeing that their data is being used through a computer browser's UserAgent. So as long as you change your Chrome/Firefox UA to whatever your mobile browser's UA is, they would have no way of telling.

Best I've used so far was [ROM] Sky Ice Cream Sandwich (2.3.5 <<WHAT DOES THIS SAY?) Multiple Flavors 1/24/12
Very quick. Battery life was about average. Seanscreams seems to be a very helpful developer.
I'm currently using
[ROM][UXKJ2]Buoyancy v1.3.0||Rogers/AT&T||[1/25/12]
Which provides the best battery life so far and comes with a ics launcher, but seemed kind of buggy. I'm using the tw launched that was also included. Jomeister did a good job and included a good kernel and uc script.

<snipped because I just repeated what plwalsh88said> That way when you tether, if you were using a different APN and your browser says it is on a phone, maybe it would not be possible to be noticed?
This site says how to do this.

I thought they also cross reference data transfer per month to discover people who tether... I guess it may depend on the plan you have/allotted data per month?

Hello,
I bought my nexus s today, and i noticed that Facebook wouldn't sync to my phone! it starts by not asking whether or not to sync contacts when i install the Facebook app and continues by not responding to 'ass account' in 'accounts & syncs' in settings.
I really like the option that i can see my fav's pictures.
can i solve this? any suggestions?
but all and all amazing phone, specially after coming from here, after two years
Google removed this option on Nexus S...
thanks, i guess it's like Google want that i will root this phone..

Don't even say you don't want to use it because its "unstable" its stable if you know how to properly set it up.

blasphemy much? especially when its a "Developer Phone" and its pretty much encouraging you to hack it. but everybody has their taste
and no. i dont believe anybody wants to run their phone stock/unrooted.. especially when we're on XDA, this forum is primarily here to hack your phone and to maximize the most out of your ~$530-$580 purchase ($199 with contract). If people wanted to leave it the way it is, they would be on other forums but they found XDA, with the majority of the users here are here to mod their phones. I would find it reasonable that they have a interest in doing this.
People primarily leave their phone stock on the forum because they're afraid that they're going to void the warranty / whatever. I'm just pointing out that it is a very hard phone to brick and they should use custom ROMs because they really do improve the Android experience.

I just really find it funny when people's answers is always "root it", "use cm7", "adb this", etc..etc.. (Personally I do run CM7 Nightlies, but get tired of these 'replies'). Not everyone wants to root their phone, not everyone wants to run a custom ROM. Some people just want to run their phones stock, even if it is a "developer phone" (which is an argument in itself). It's as bad as people saying "you have a 'developer phone'" course their's always bugs in it when someone points out a simple bug.

Just like what I editted my post previously in regards about XDA & users. XDA is primarily a forum for getting the most of your phone. So yeah, I will continue assuming that they want to get the most out of their phone. This forum isn't for unrooted/unmodded areas. Thats what Android Central is for (no disrespect to Android Central, I think its a great website but they are more friendly towards stock roms).
And no it has nothing to do with "developer phone," anything that Google makes is considered a beta. Especially when you get a product from them in its early stages. Early adopters encounters bugs, its apart of Google.
We all pay a price for being early adopters, it could be a success or fail. No one knows.
Android isn't iOS where everybody will run on Stock. Android is a versatile mobile OS, we have many options. If we don't like something that Google or a manufacturer did.. we're able to change it. So if we dont like Google's decision on Facebook Sync we can take it into our own hands. The OP wanted sync with FaceBook, I simply gave him a solution to fix it by flashing a custom ROM such as CM7. Am I coercing him to root / flash? No. the decision is up to him. But if he did try it out, I'm certain that he will enjoy it.
Edit: After reading this thread once again:

if the ROMs are based off CM7 then it can sync. Unsure if Master changed it for Axura or not. But I believe at this point, it'd be CM7 and MIUI with FB Sync (uncertain about MIUI but it is based off CM7)
Edit: GBCollab is Cm7 too
hmm ... but interessting thing is:
why is it working with CM7? what did they make that it is working?
i think they didnt call the big abracadabra and then it was working ...
so why is it working in CM7 and is it possible to get this "what ever it is" in to a other rom??

Because Android is AOSP? And CM7 is compiled from AOSP with tweaks and additions. All they have to do is find the line that disables the sync and remove it or modify it.
I could imagine that if u use GoogleContactsSyncAdapter.apk or GooglePartnerSetup.apk from stock 2.3.2 Rom it may work again, since 2.3.3 is the first rom that has fb sync disabled. But i didnt try it out and im on cm7 anyhow, i just think it may be worth a try.

it works in cyanogen because he turned it back on. it is open source software, so you can do whatever you want to it. google removed this feature, but cyanogen added it back. pretty simple, and that is why it is always worth using a custom ROM over stock ROM. no reason to never root.

no. just flash CM7. if you want it THAT badly, go get the source of CM7 and go look at it.. and compile your own AOSP with that line of code to re-enable but its way too much work. just flash CM7
I though fb sync still worked on CM7 as he uses the android open source version of 2.3 and allot of the other roms out there use the nexus s release of 2.3 as their base?
Facebook sync wasn't disabled on the N1 just the NS

Anyway, two options:
1) Flash a RUU
2) Downgrade to hboot 1.17 and restore the gingerbread backup (that you didn't make) or flash a basically stock rom - such as ARHD.

Should have been taken as more of a kick in the pants than an insult. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe a functioning browser and (in my opinion) WiFi calling are a wee bit more important than ever changing colors and boot animations. At this point I see no advantage with ics rather than gb. In fact for me I'm at a disadvantage because I have to pay an overage charge next month due to the WiFi calling not working. I don't think anyone could hardly blame me for being a little upset.

I thanked how ignorant that was. Every rom I've tried has had a functioning browser and since only two carriers on Earth use Wifi calling (I don't believe it's even the same kind), it's not exactly a priority. ICS brings HWA and proper dual core support - how you missed that; I'll never know.
WiFi calling is free if you have the free WiFi calling plan so yes it a priority for me. And um duh I am pretty sure what I am trying to do is go back to a stock Rom.

How about keep a stock backup on your computer too? I suppose that would require thinking ahead.
Of all the sensation devs we have I cannot think of one that uses tmobile USA, so it's not a priority for them is it?
Get over it, flash your stock rom, and go back to thinking the world revolves around you ;-)
enough flaming and fighting. Keep on topic, if you can't help don't troll the thread. Thanks.

you do know there are apps such as groove ip and talkatone that let you make wifi calling so you dont have to rely on t mobiles wifi calling app. and ics has many advantages besides "flashy colors and boot animations". and i as well have never had a problem with the browser in any of the 8-10 roms ive flashed. oh well have fun downgrading!
I guess ill never understand why people act like me going back to a different Rom so I can use a certain feature that I need without an issue would make any difference in your life. After all isn't that what the hell xda developers is for is to have a choice? Are people really like that on earth? I don't know you, you're nowhere near me and I don't give a damn about you. Why would I be told to "have fun downgrading"? Is my Rom downgrade affecting everyone's phone or is it just mine? I guess as long as someone else can say they have the latest Rom kernal and radio they can say that they're better than the next guy. I guess your idea of me "upgrading" is to have a phone with ics but to have my WiFi calling not work. Yeah, that's really an upgrade for me. Thanks for your godlike insight. I needed it to find my way in life to get a non working ics build on my phone so I can say I'm as good as you are. Thanks god.
I don't like the way the xda forums show up on the browser on ics. It's hard to explain but its like part of the screen slides over instead of the whole thing. It's wierd I know. I mean dang though if I'm having a problem is it really hurting anyone else if I don't wanna deal with it on my phone? I hate how the web pages are on ics. how many times did I say I want to go back to gb and wait for an official tmous ics update to come out and go from there? Wow. This is crazy. All I wanted was WiFi calling and a stock browser. I had no idea I was hurting anyone else by asking what I need to do to put gb back on my phone. I'm sorry. I'll just pay money in overage charges so that I can say my phone is better than his because it has ics even though its not really better for me cause my WiFi calling don't work and I don't like the browser. I'm so sorry.

No one cares what ROM you want to use.
What cheeses people off is the way you complain about the hard work of others not being good enough for you and demand that this community drops everything it's doing to help you do something. And you act like we're bad people because we're not putting YOUR needs as our top priority.
You get back what you give. You give everyone a bad attitude and bark demands. So you get nasty responses.
There's 100 threads around here for people asking the same kind of thing you are. (So for one...search before asking) Those threads are usually from people asking nicely, and you'll see that there's a large number of people happily willing to help. Since lots of people want to help others, but no one wants to help you, consider that your approach may be the problem.
And my post is being 100% sincere and helpful. It's probably the best advice you can get on XDA because I'm giving you the key to getting more help on future problems instead of being ignored and chastised again. Take this advice seriously and you'll get a lot more assistance in the future. Don't take this advice and your next question will irritate everyone again and you'll get a lot of grief again.
Ok
I don't recall making any demands. Not sure where that came from. I was frustrated and in urgent need of the instructions but I never demanded anything. And I thanked the only person who did help. I mean what the heck I was getting mad that the WiFi calling kept cutting out and no patch would fix it. And I was using the hell outta my minutes. For some reason WiFi calling wouldn't work with any rom I tried. Yeah I want ics on my phone but it just ain't workin. And yes I superwiped and all that kinda stuff. Hell I love the color and and animations and tweaks but man keep it real functionality trumps colors. I'm trying these kitchens myself and I'm working on my own ics tmous rom. Apparently there are no US sensation devs so we're on our own here.
And this is what I found on the arhd page about WiFi calliing
w_bovine said:
You have to keep in mind that WiFi Calling on this or any other ICS ROM is sketchy at best. Some have reported good success with it but most have problems with consistency and some simply can't get it to work.
Until T-Mobile releases an update WiFi Calling will be unreliable. As it is the included WiFi Calling is merely an add-on and not meant specifically for this base release.
If you truly need WiFi calling it's best you stick to a stock ROM or perhaps a Gingerbread build with proven reliability.

Check your APN settings. New modems are installed by flashing a zip in CWM. You got it right.

Not being able to use this modem isn't costing you much in the way of performance. The stock KJ2 was more reliable (at least in my area). The biggest bottleneck to network performance is on t-mo's end. In theory, this phone should see better speeds as they upgrade the network itself.
Do you have connectivity problems with roms that have this modem baked in?

Not being able to use this modem isn't costing you much in the way of performance. The stock KJ2 was more reliable (at least in my area). The biggest bottleneck to network performance is on t-mo's end. In theory, this phone should see better speeds as they upgrade the network itself.
Do you have connectivity problems with roms that have this modem baked in?

Oh I gotcha. I'm about to switch over ROMs from GG3.8 to something else. I haven't been too happy with any of the custom ROMs I've found on here. Most of them are only supported for 2 weeks before the devs go A.D.D. and start making something else. The few that have survived the longest have changed hands so many times that I worry about all of the overlooked problems and inherited glitches in code that may never get worked out. I wish someone would actually work on developing, rather than minor tweaks and skins. Most of the ROMs are copies of other ROMs but with new skins baked in.
I haven't noticed any huge problems with ROMs using the KJ2 modem other than low signal strength. I know that it was mostly on Tmo's end of things, but I figured any little boost I can get would help as I live in a somewhat rural area.

What can I tell ya...if it's so easy I'd like to see you sit down and come up with something new. If you don't want to wait until bhundven finishes all the hard work he is doing for us, just buy another phone and jump to another section of xda, dude.
I'll be retiring from the custom rom thing, anyway. Good luck and take care!

Annnnyway.... sorry for being rude. It is frustrating to run into those limitations with this phone.
Believe me... if I had a good computer, I'd be hacking the source and compiling.
Once again, I apologize. That was wrong of me.

I'm sorry. I didn't meant to offend. I've tried several ROMs, a few of them you've worked on. A lot of them I've really enjoyed for a while. What I've found is that a lot of modifications to the firmware and kernel have had negative effects on the stability of each ROM. Almost all I've tried have had trouble with radio dormancy - switching from WIFI to 4G have prevented the radio reactivating - forcing me to reboot often.
At one point, several "developers" have had multiple ROMs going at once. This can be done if one keeps considerable documentation for each project. If not, though, how the hell can you juggle that many projects without making considerable mistakes?
I've seen good work done by a lot of the devs on here, so I'm not bashing. But support for each ROM only lasts about two weeks MAX and then they cook some new ROM without fixing the previous one - and the cycle repeats all over again. It takes Android fragmentation to the extreme.
Take my criticism as an insult if you want, but it was only intended as a critique of the dev environment in general.
Currently I'm rolling stock KJ2, rooted, with all of the useless bloat removed.

Nah...no insult taken. My bad for being overly sensitive. I have noticed that the firmware on this phone just doesn't react very well to alterations.
Any slight deviation from the original structure just causes slight bugs and boot loops. My wife has a G2X with CyanogenMod 7.2 and it is so much more flexible.
I tried many experiments with init.d scripts to increase app storage, which work on the G2X BTW, with resulted in epic fails.
Let's see what bhundven can do to make this phone into what it should be.

That would be CM 7. That would be great but I'll be happy with CM 6.2. Yeah, it's still Froyo but at least the foundation would be set. It'll clean up the mess and the development would increase substantially.
It's weird. When you look at this hardware and compare it to the Nexus S and the Epic 4G, it is just so similar. I use the Epic themes and it just matches up perfectly. There is no doubt that JB would run on this without any problems.
I also cannot afford a new phone right now. Our day will arrive... and when it does, this phone will be almost like the Relay.

When your contract is up, call T-mo and let them know they sold you a "T-Mobile" BRANDED product. You bought the T-Mobile Sidekick 4G and you got stuck with crummy software. They allowed you to be abandoned in Samsung Touchwiz hades. Now, I'm not worrying about "how a dev devs", but AOSP isn't happening. Just get a Relay. If you explain what happened to you, they will probably cut you a sweetheart deal. Keep your Sidekick around and you can still use the keyboard to hack out code, write, and surf message boards on WiFi.

At the moment I got this phone, I was trying to decide between this and the myTouch 4G Slide. I was attracted to the full qwerty layout and was impressed with ayoteddy's work.
I look back now and regret not spending the extra cash. I still like the Sidekick but find myself hiding it from my coworkers at the T-Mobile call center here in Puerto Rico.
They are flaunting their Galaxies and HTCs running CyanogenMod 10....and I'm here with themes. LoL.
I will have a one year discount coming up and will take your advice. It is ashame that Samsung have clueless tools responding to emails so sending complaints would be pointless.
I am not losing faith in bhundven, however. He may be able to make this phone rise from the ashes.

Just as a note for other Sidekick owners, I specifically asked the T-Mo rep I spoke to about selling a phone with a two year contract tha wasn't actually viable for two years. Froyo literally destroys your options on the Play Store and I have been forced to use old versions of almost every app on my device--just to get combatibility and stability. Considering I went through the additional effort of partially porting my own AOSP, I think I did everything I could... Maybe I came up short because I didn't spend enough time and maybe I could have given up more free time, but that's not really fair. I should have gotten Gingerbread. That was my case for an extra discount on my Relay.

I spoke to bhundven, if any work gets done on it, it's gonna be sometime. He's got life to deal with. I told him to hold onto it until he manages to come across some time. No rushes. We're lucky this forum didn't end up in legacy devices after all. We had AdamOutler and krylon360 work on our phone. So we weren't left in the dark like some phones for companies like MetroPCS.
Hello everybody!
So i'd like to check out what roms people use and why.
Me personally i'm practically stuck with stock RUXLF3 because of the GPS is only working with it. I'll look into that later.
I've switched out Browser and Email apps for AOSP ones because they're graphically more appealing and the GUIs are more effective.
But if it weren't for the GPS issue i would be on Embryo 6.
What roms do you run and what makes you choose the one you choose?
Mine is slimbean forever. I chose it because I was using orthus 5 and was having too many lockups and freezes. I stay on it for 1 (well 2, stability) reason only. I don't have to turn my data on and off to send or receive mms. Major turn on for me as its a pita to do that as I'm on lowest data plan I'm required to have (I would have no data plan if I could since I never use it).

Ah that's ok because this isn't a best of thread, it's good for research purposes. You're not supposed to list all of your favourites, you're supposed to say what your daily driver is no matter if you like it or not and share with us the reason for it being your daily driver. So one rom per person that is.

gps shouldnt be an issue, sometimes it needs to relearn, just give it time when switching radios, flash it twice no cable plugged in, or are you talking about roms in general, so yup you should look into it
i guess we'll wait for the mod to decide if this is a "best rom" thread, now let me see, which rom should i pick?
It'll be interesting to see what the MODs decide.
To me it's a vote so the OP isn't asking anyone to tell him what to use. He's set this up in such a way that if people do vote it might be beneficial in the future. When people open "best" threads they could just be linked to this and the thread closed. Then those people can see what percentage of votes each ROM received. I'm by no means saying that whatever ROM that get's the most votes it the "best" for any individual but it's a good baseline for noobs.
I personally hope that mods don't close this; don't think of it as a best of thread, think of it as figuring out what the community happens to be running. I'm gonna need to pick a new ROM soon since the one I'm on is discontinued. It'd be nice to see what people have so far.
It would be perceived as a "best of" thread mostly due to the fact that it may cause people to compare and possibly become a debatable subject. But let the mods decide.

I agree in principle, but I just don't see this thread ending any other way than two morons fighting to the death over ROM A vs. ROM B.
I'm not planning on changing the ROM on my Rocket anytime soon; kinda like the one I've got. I've also settled into a daily driver on my Note II; been a very boring month or so in terms of flashing.

Now that is a ROM.
As TJ said this may end up badly
There is no objective best ROM test
People have preferences based on their usage (a gamer, for example, would want a snappy rom as opposed to me who wants battery life -which again is a function of your usage)
I got my best rom which I'm loving and is snappy with great battery life. But I'm not telling

Honestly I don't know what setting allows it, I just know it does. Put slim on my sons cappy because he was having a problem receiving mms with his data off and now he can leave data off but still send and receive mms. Same with my rocket. I have asked several separate places about what setting it is that allows this and have never gotten an answer.:what:
This is horrible no wonder devs leave xda. Best threads are nothing but crap.

Trying JellyBAM. Camera crashes the phone when flash goes off (although flashlight works fine). My corporate mail/calendar account also can't access the right security settings, so I'm crippled for work purposes. If you use these features, consider something other than JellyBAM.
Tried PACman but switched. Don't recall why, now. Maybe I'll try it again. . . .

PACman and JellyBAM have the same base and kernel so you will have the same issues connecting to work email.
I've seen other users post this about the camera flash crashing things, but I was never able to recreate it. So I just summed it up to an improper wipe/flash. No one has offered any kind of logs either to go along with said crashes, but that's not saying it will help because again we can't recreate these issues during testing.

Inaccurate exaggeration is nobody's friend. It's a nice ROM, sure, but saying it has less issues than stock? You just lost any further credibility.
Happens to be my opinion based on my own personal experience however. And will remain so.
I'm kinda like you david, I consider a ROM 100% when it runs 100% of the things I have to have or need. I realize it can't be like that for everyone but for those that it is, it allows a person to enjoy WAY more ROMs. JMO.....

But when I read reviews of a ROM, maybe I'm wanting to try it but trying to determine what things other people are encountering. Someone who says, "This ROM is perfect! Everything works!" but then I find out that, no, everything doesn't work and even they later admit that "some things aren't working but I can overlook that", well, that totally invalidates the entire thread. How am I to trust anything that person writes about anything else? Yes, we have subjective opinions about ROMs, but it does nobody any favor to exaggerate the abilities of a ROM. If you tell me a ROM is perfect and "better than stock", then I have some extra high expectations.
I understand completely. But there is more to a declaration of perfection than the statement itself. It would depend on who makes it and their knowledge of different ROMs but to me it just means it's damn close. I usually find out the details when I run it myself. That's when I'm reminded that nothing is perfect. Even the original developers don't distribute perfection and there is a HUGE well paid team of them.
I can appreciate anyone's expectations of a shared original ROM or a port to be one of perfection but that usually means the person with those expectations just doesn't realize all that's involved. People have to remember that this is more a personally fulfilling "hobby" than their vocation.
My biggest frustration is people wanting something that works 100%. Compared to what? Stock? Half the time the "Stock" ROMs have their own issues. That's why we root and ROM, to improve the experience over Stock.
What features do you want? What's your opinion of 100%? Sense? AOSP?
Hell, even the title of the thread isn't 100% accurate. There isn't an official ICS ROM, so there can't be a debloated version. And the word "Best" implies that there are at least 2 ICS Roms that work 100%....
[/Rant]

Exactly This.
In even the best ICS "closest to what factory would be" ROM I've found (Virtuous Primadonna), 1080p recording, WiFi calling, and tethering were borked. To me 100% means 100% as in all options the phone came with work and not having options taken away.
MikTouch is still the best I've found. Once the Xperia ZL drop for purchase I'm bailing on my MT4GS. I absolutely love this phone, but I hate HTC with a burning of a thousand suns for bailing on this phone which was supposed to be a flagship device.
