Mifi 4510 - General Questions and Answers

Hey all,
So I resort on my phone (4G connection) for my main source of getting online. So today i picked up one of those little portable MiFi modems; and just for sh!ts and giggles i dropped my 4G sim card from my Rezound into the device and I almost pooped my pants when i saw the green light. Since I am a lucky soul who got grandfathered into the unlimited data I thought this would be a better way instead of burning out my Rezound and battery.
Now my questions are...I have a older 4G SIM card from a previous Verizon phone...is there anyway possible that I can somehow get a "copy" of my SIM, so I don't have to keep swapping it back and fourth from my phone to the MiFi device.
Lastly, since this is working flawlessly, probably the fastest connection I've ever had ( beating out T-1 line) Can Big Red see that my SIM is in this Mifi, and either cut me off, or start charging me? (even tho it's unlimited data)?
Thanks
ps i didn't know where to put this posting so sorry if its in the wrong place.

1. You can only have one SIM active with one number at a time
2. Possibly Someone more familiar with VZW will be able to help you more. I think it is possible for them to detect you are tethering and charge you extra, but not 100% sure.
Nice find!

Thanks although swapping out simcards is a pain in the ads lol

I don't have exact answers per se, but as an AT&T Mobility employee I have some advice and some warnings.
Advice: It would be much better to get a "4G" SIM instead of the GoPhone one, just in case this causes any issues.
When you go activate the SIM, take another, non-smartphone, phone with you and say that that's what you will use. We will put the non-smartphone IMEI in the system and it will allow you to get the $50 unlimited talk, text, and web.
Once you have the "4G" SIM activated, and the non-smartphone IMEI registered, put the SIM in the Inspire. Now, the seemingly difficult part.
Warning: You MUST find the APN settings for our feature phones somewhere, if you can't, I will try to find them for you. The reasoning behind this is that more then likely the "web" included on the $50 package is only one the feature phone APN, instead of the smartphone one.
Secondly, don't be surprised if one day you stop having internet connectivity. As we do with our postpaid customers, we also have a system for prepaid that sweeps every IMEI used and applies (or in your case, removes) the appropriate data packages.
I know that our prepaid data packages are a ripoff, but this is one way to do it, if only temporarily.
P.S. Where did you hear it would only be EDGE? That seems incorrect to me.

The inspire will work ina go phone similar card as it is what I run mine one. Data speeds are the same but cost more in the long run.

So if I am understanding this right, the phone must be rooted, and the APN needs to be changed to reflect a featured phone data plan instead of the smartphone data plan that the droid is expecting to use. Along with using a 4G simcard, that should be it right? The apn settings are all over the internet, i just read them, its like wap.cingular.com or something, but whats this sweeping system you speak of, does it compare the sim card over the air to the imei its 'registered with' opposed to the imei of the phone its installed in?

It will work just fine stock. I have been running prepaid for awhile now and have not had a single issue. The apns will set on their own to the proper ones once you insert your similar card.
And they are right att dies sweep the IMEI but it doesn't matter as I gave reps my IMEI when I got the inspire and swapped my account from my old captivate. Also I font use a data plan as I am normally around wifi at all times. The only backdraw is if you have less then $5 on your account the data won't connect. ATT can't stop you from having any phone you want on prepaid. They tried with the IPhone and a lawsuite ended that.

Except, data speeds are kinda slow and the "Unlimited Data" on the $60/Mo plan is actually capped at 3GB..
so what happens after you reach the "cap"

Im actually using an Inspire via GoPhone. I have been for a few months. I just went to a local att store and simply bought a simcard, some airtime, and activated that sim card, popped it in and voila! I dont recommend buying a cheap GoPhone and using the sim out of that because recently, att decide to start locking the sim that comes with that phone to that specific phone. I made that mistake the first time and found it out the hard way.
I only have the $25/mo plan and i buy a $25 data package when needed. I dont use a lot of data, since I have wifi available most of the time.

Verizon Question about SIM and USB Broadband

Hi,
I'm looking for a decently definitive answer on this, I came from AT&T and had an ExpressCard modem where I could pop out the SIM from an iPhone and stick it in the Card (older data plan, could change APNs to the mobile wap etc). Anyway, this worked really well, and I didn't need to use it very often so I was never too concerned about them flagging for excess usage etc.
FastForward to now...I switched to Verizon, on the DC (obviously), and I just picked up a Pantech UML290 4G for dirt cheap, downloaded the drivers, popped out the SIM from the DC, fired it up and it appears to work perfectly. I'm on an unlimited data plan too.
So now for the big question of how risky is this really if it's not used frequently- I'm not going to replace my home internet or anything, just used it periodically when I need a better connection on my laptop without wifi (tethering has been flakey at best for me) I'm sure this technically violates the TOS, but I'm looking at this from a risk perspective of how likely am I to actually get flagged/caught etc if I don't have excessive data/usage etc.
Thanks!

Thank you for the reply- my thought with the card vs tethering was that my SIM was getting tied to a different ESN etc. Thank you for the reassurance though.
Verizon knows, but as long as you aren't using obscene amounts of data you will be fine.

Not sure if that was supposed to be couldn't, but essentially I did the same thing. I took the sim out of my charge, put it in the pantech and voilĂ . I don't have the broadband plan though (to my knowledge anyway) so we'll see how that works out for the next bill.

hello fellow wrx owner
I had the same issue. If you don't have the new sim, and they have not activated LTE on your data plan, you will have data issues.
a quick trip to an att store had me all fixed up. I have not had any issues since

The reason you're not getting data, perhaps, is because you need to change your plan with your carrier.
AT&T right?
They can tell sometimes. Other times they can't. I have a SE x10 device able to be a mobile hotspot without paying extra for the tether plan. Oh and before that, I had a x10i then lit up a new x10a AT&T branded android their system automatically without my permission switched my data plan from 2G unlimited, to a 3G+ 2GB cap and $10/GB for overage.
Hope that helps.
Yes sir, AT&T. I called customer service prior to posting here and, as I figured, they said I have to get a new sim. My only problem is I'm not ready to give up the iPhone entirely. I'd like to try and have the best of both worlds and switch back and forth.
Oh and I was able to switch back and forth between the Galaxy Nexus and iPhone with no issues.
Only problem was the Nexus had terrible gps and kept losing signal and I returned it.
SIM subscriber identification module
You need a new one. It will still light your iphone up, ask about your data plan. There should not be a problem with a new sim and correct data plan.
---------- Post added at 01:28 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:22 AM ----------
I wonder if you're confused about that cuz the SIM is obviously much larger than your extended memory chip. Like Thumbnail compared to pinky nail LOL.
An iphone user wouldn't be as familiar with the Micro SD HC chip (removable on Android handsets). I put a 32 GB Class 10 in my skyrocket, or my Infuse, and it has 20 gigs of stuff loaded on it and it zooms with the skyrocket compared to the Infuse.
---------- Post added at 01:40 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:28 AM ----------
And personally if I couldn't move my stuff, the stuff I have loaded on my Lexar, (bought from Sears so I could pay extra) 32 GB Micro SDHC, Class 10 thumb drive (which are wash machine and dryer proof, tested multiple times, occasionally the USB adapter reader doesn't make it)...
bottom line...
Dude, if you can't move your chip to your iphone then why would you bother lighting the darn thing up with your SIM? Get over your iphone!
Update...I was on my way to the AT&T store and noticed that I had the 4g symbol. Sweet!!
Only problem is my download speed is about half of what I get from my 4s.

I have both the Skyrocket and the iphone 4S and have not problem switching the sim. I use a microsim adapter in the Skyrocket. You don't need a special sim for either phone. Just have ATT provision the microsim for your Skyrocket on a LTE data plan. Before doing that, my skyrocket could make calls but not receive data. Once on the LTE plan I can now switch back and forth from my iphone to Skyrocket and both work fine with the same sim.

No problems at all with GPS. The Skyrocket has the best GPS I have ever had on any phone. Locks super fast and tracks really well.
Ok, guess I will be exchanging my current one for another Skyrocket since this one loses signal and sometimes doesnt keep up with my current location.
Sorry can't help much, but the SIM card for my iPhone 3GS can switch back and forth easily and works with data. But it's not a micro sim
This totally answered my question. Thanks!
One question though: does visual voicemail work ok on both?

I went to the store yesterday, got a new SIM, cut it to microSIM size, and was happily surfing on both devices. Thanks for the confirmation. I was going to try it anyway cause I couldn't seem to find anyone that did it but ran into your post yesterday. Made me feel better about doing it. There really is no such thing as an lte sim card whether it says lte on it doesn't matter. It's how it's provisioned in the ATT system. I didn't cut one down. When I bought my Skyrocket I pulled the mini sim out of my iphone, placed it in the adapter and put it in the Skyrocket. Phone worked but data did not. To fix the that, the agent behind the counter just changed my data plan to the lte one in the system and data immediately started working. As soon as I got back in my car, I put the mini sim back in the iphone and it also worked on voice and data.

AT&T Micro SIM?

First let me start this post by explaining my situation.....
I am on my parents AT&T family plan as a $10 add on dumb phone. Previously I have been using other networks (T-Mobile) smart phones to get around having to pay for a data plan. This has worked for the last several years but I have just now upgraded to a phone with a micro SIM (Nexus 5 if course).
Now to the real reason I am posting...
Will AT&T give me a micro SIM without a smart phone plan? I'm not quite sure, but I am fairly certain micro SIMs are only in smart phones. So logically they would require a data plan to get a micro SIM. I have already cut my regular sized SIM to fit, but I botched the cut a little and while it works I'm afraid it may end up falling into if the tray and getting stuck inside the phone.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I wouldn't worry about it falling into the phone. The tray should keep it where it should be. But you can always go to the at&t store and ask. Just don't give them your name and number until you know they won't charge you. Otherwise you could ask for a new Sim card and try the cut again.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Since AT&T doesn't have a full IMEI listing of Google's Nexus 5 in their databases, it' unlikely that they care or would bother to check - you just won't have access to mobile data - roaming or "home" since the account or line isn't provisioned for it - I used to have a line on Gophone but now keeping one on T-Mo's PAYG only, and, T-Mo doesn't recognize or "identify" it as a Nexus 5 under "My Account" - I just get redirected to the Data Plan web page to sign up or switch plan. WiFi on the N5 functioning well & I'm using Talkatone to call out while sitting in the living room.
Can you request a new micro-Sim over the telephone & switch your line to it instead of making a trip to the store, have your "folks" call - if necessary, you can pop the new micro-Sim into an full-size Sim adapater, and get it activated/working on a "non-smart" or dumb phone first. Then, move it to the N5 to use - those of us with multiple GSM unlocked phones do the moving around all the time and AT&T WS really never give me any hassle, you just won't have access to unpaid for Mobile Data, whether it's 4G LTE, 3G/HSPA or + or 2G/Edge, etc. etc.
Or if your current Sim is truly screwed, order a Sim cutter online, bring an old dumb phone to the store and ask for a new regular Sim and then cut it using the Sim cutter they are less than $5 and they are really easy to use. I've cut quite a few without any issues

I don't know personally since I use LTE. But from what I hear the imei doesn't register. I would take anything the store says with a grain of salt. They want to charge you more if they can.

nexus 4 was detected by at&t
nexus 5 will be as well, especially since it'll be sold by t-mobile (t-mobile phones are detected on at&t, the two carriers probably share IMEI lists)
some people have luck by first adding a data block (no MMS though) on the line while using a dumbphone, then switching SIMs (but you'll need to keep that data block)
I don't think they share lists. I have been using a LG G2X for the last three years without them detecting it. Even when they did detect a smart phone (used a HTC inspire for a while) I just popped my SIM in my old flip phone called them up, gave them imei from the dumb phone and had the data plan dropped.
Sounds like I just need to go to an AT&T store and try my luck. Think I will stick my SIM in my old phone before I go.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
If u don't want to ask for a new Sim just cut your dumb phone full size down to a micro (see YouTube). Whether they change your plan is a gamble based in on the imei. Since they do not sell the n5 like tmo and sprint then chances are it's not on their list as a smart phone.
