ADW Launcher Ex/Launchers in general - Kindle Fire Themes and Apps

Well those of you who know adw launcher ex, know that there is a main dock and another dock. The other dock doesnt allow me to add apps onto the screen of my kindle fire. So does anyone know how i can make it so its just the main dock only? Also what are some good launchers out there?

Like this menu/more/adwsettings/ui settings/ then if i remember i believe there is a hidden dock settings there should be a setting to disable it.

I use Regina 3d launcher which looks spectacular on the kindle

I was using GO Launcher EX on the stock ROM and then ADW when I flashed CM7 but now I'm back to GO with black glass, a few select go widgets, the transparent widgets theme, and bigrubberpepper's volume control. I like how everything integrates, it seems a lot more polished.

What do you use for the status bar replacement? I'm on MoDaCo GR6 w/GO and am trying to replace the status/bottom bar and also stop it from changing wallpapers from my stock theme one when it goes into sleep/lock mode.

That should help with the changing lockscreen. I did it on the fire itself without using adb though, just use your root explorer app, navigate to /data/data/com.android.settings/files/wallpaper, and disable write access. Anytime you want to change the wallpaper, though, you have to enable write access, change it, then disable.
If anyone knows a better way, feel free to chime in

Slick wallpaper!

For some reason Go launcher ex is super smooth on my Archos 70 but choppy on my Kindle Fire. I switched my KF to ADW and it's smooth as melted butter.

That is Go's Google Search Widget with the transparency widget theme installed.
I, too, love Go's transparent widgets. The scrolling calendar is great.

Anyone know how to get that home dock from above?

Edit: looks like i figured it out. Cleared adw settings and reinstalled. Sorry
Has anyone been able to use SPB launcher and keep it as their default. I'm running CM7 and am able to install it and run it fine but it doesn't show up in my options when I clear defaults and press the home key. Any ideas? Thanks

I've recently been running Zeam on CM7. I like the minimalism and found it to be really zippy. No issues so far.

Is the Go Launcher EX smooth on the KF? I am gonna flash CM7 soon and wanted to integrate a launcher into the rom I will flash. Also, I used in on the stock, but sometimes the icon labels were cutoff/the Go Launcher EX menu was being clipped, I guess due to the bottom bar on the KF, is anyone else getting these problems?

I was having the same issues with the icons being cut off on the bottom. When I was using Go Launcher it seemed choppy in my opinion. I switched to ADW Ex and it is super smooth and runs really fast on my Kindle.

Indeed. Plus, you can stack the dock with unlimited app icons negating the need to fiddle with folders or the default app drawer, which is kinda lacking IMO. I put my 20 or so most used apps in the dock and run altdrawer as the app drawer since it is more configurable. No more delays waiting for the home screen to re-draw when closing apps.

When you are on a home screen and long press on a widget, you now see more options than before including shortcuts to the Application info and Market pages for the app. You can also quickly set up custom shortcuts using ADW’s menus rather than the standard Android process.
New app drawer functions on long press:
These new app drawer functions are probably the most impressive. You can now long press on apps from within the drawer to see a variety of options, giving you more control over the look and feel. You can also add folders directly in, plus a bunch of other shortcuts. After playing with the new app drawer for 30 seconds, you see how amazing these new tweaks will be once this thing gets fine-tuned and is ready for release.

wow I am surprised this is thread isn't getting attention. with so many ADW users I'm surprised I had to stumble upon the beta 2 version. I have been looking forward to a skinnable app drawer launcher for sooooo long and I love ADW.
many people like Adw but as a launcher it does not have anything special. Lets say similar to Go launcher.
Adw has only cosmetic things. None of them are usefull very much.

I disagree with that statement..
second Hidden dock
adjustable column rows
drag and drop apps to the dockbar
probably more that i can't think of on the top of my head..
and to whoever said something about the dockbar background.. if you purchase ADW Ex it offers that feature to easily switch out the dockbar bg :x
Go Launcher is good don't get me wrong, (currently using it) just that only reason I'm not on ADW is cause my theme just works too well to not have the ability to have a looping theme.
with Go launcher:
* you can kill applications
* you can hide icons
* you can uninstall
* you can create folders
* it has built-in task manager
* it has built-in recent
from straight app-drawer.
Adw has none of these. But it has many dock backgrounds, themes, fancy colors...etc.
You decide?

With froyo .. you don't need to KILL any applications..
you can hide icons in ADW by creating categories.. and you don't need to go to a menu to make them show when you "hide" them..
you can uninstall apps from adw by holding them to the trashcan..
you can't have folders in the app drawer in adw but like i said before.. categories..
You can always access recent apps by holding the home button.. which I have always done.
As I've said.. Go Launcher is a GREAT launcher.. but don't cast out ADW that easily..

Uninstallig apps works the same way in go launcher, furthermore, you can also uninstall them directly in the drawer.
Accessing recent apps pressing the home button works as well, however, there also is a category for that in the drawer.

I use it this way: the regular dock only has one button which opens the app drawer.
When I swipe my finger up the screen, the hidden dock appears containing all the docks apps.
I like that because it prevents me from accidently starting apps.

You choose open/close dock as swipe up action and when the dock is closed you drop apps on the bottom part of the screen.
Hope that helps.

compatible launchers.....

stuntdouble has created a great list of apps, games and utilities but how about a thread for honeycomb compatible launchers ?
one of the things i love about android is the ability to use custom launchers .... however not many seem to work on honeycomb.
might be worth keeping this list separate though as launchers tend to evolve more.
starting the list then -
Launcher Pro - seems to work very well and seems to be nicely tweaked for HC.
VTL launcher - i believe this is being built specifically for HC and seems to be a nice start.
anyone found any others ?
list starts here ..

I added a couple a while ago, but tbh I don't really care much for them personally. Not really all that many updated for honeycomb. I think the fact that the default launcher works just fine has put off most developers.

Well you're entitled to your opinion ofc, but I don't get any lag with it on mine in 3.0.1. I'd say you've been installing badly coded apps that have made it laggy tbh if you had it bad in 3.0.1 as well. Don't know about 3.1 yet, will see tomorrow though.

What's the best Launcher?

So I've never used a launcher before this day. I always knew they had cool features but just didn't feel like learning a whole new launcher. In your opinion which one is the best? I will try any launcher paid or free. If it's free great but if it's worth the money I'll surely support the developer.
I tried GO Launcher EX and it looked alright... I guess, I put the Sense theme on(latest one) and it was bugged like ****, the menu buttons were covering the Sense buttons so I couldn't use them and it didn't even have the carousel effect, it just moved between pages normally. I don't know if I did something wrong(I even tried rebooting, still nothing), I just ran the Launcher and applied the Sense theme from within it. So from my experience this Launcher already sucks which brings us back to the main point of this topic; what is the best launcher(your personal favorite)?

Go Launcher is and is extremely configurable. Check out all the preferences you can customize, then check out the themes. (Some paid themes and a bunch of free ones...just have to search for them.)
I LOVE the transparent theme combined with the transparent dock theme. You can apply themes to the GO Widgets also, which makes them look pretty nice.

Not true, I didnt see clear in there.
I've used all the popular launchers. My favorite is MIUI, but that requires MIUI Rom, which we don't have. My current launcher of choice is GO Launcher. It used to kind of suck, but they make improvements all the time and there are many really nice free themes for it. Right now I'm using Windows 7 theme.

Widget descriptions missing after upgrade to ICS 4.0

Just upgraded to ICS on my AT&T phone, and shortly realized that the widget descriptions in the list do not show up (thus making it really hard to figure out what each is). Holding my finger on an entry does make the text visible, but trying to peek under my finger to see what it says is still annoying.
I've even switched between several different launchers (ADW, Nova), and there is no difference.
Any help? Thanks.

It's not ICS. It's the launcher. The stock ICS launcher will not allow the “press and hold" to select widgets. You have to go to the app drawer on the stock launcher.
I guarantee that if you switch to the stock launcher, the option won't even be there. It's one of the things that they removed in ICS.

Well, I see now that the stock launcher doesn't allow you to press-and-hold to select widgets. But it seems to be simply a matter of fonts/colors that would fix everything. All other launchers I tried allowed the action of the widget to be added this way, and the descriptor is there and shown when the screen is pressed. It just seems like the default color is the same as the background, so you can't see it.
Oh well, thanks for the info.

You would probably need to decompile the launcher apk and edit the background color... what launcher do you prefer? Maybe I'll look into it as I happen to be on ICS for the time being.

Edit: then again, maybe it's something in our framework-res.apk- i'll look into it a bit
Edit#2: yep, thinking it's some leftover stuff in the framework-res.apk... before I had a chance to dig through and try to change it, I found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21101599 - works fine with ADW. Just remove the apk from the zip, put on your sdcard, click on it and install as a normal app.
Yeah I think it's system related altered as the function he's speaking of works on my skyrocket running apex launcher.

I'm having the same issues. Wouldn't mind the stock ICS method of going to the Widgets tab except there is no way to quickly go to a widget that happens to be at the end of the list (e.g., a widget starting with the letter Y or Z). You have to sit there paging repeatedly until you reach the end. I was looking for a way to quickly search for a widget http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1927036 but doesn't seem like that's possible.
I don't know why they switched to this method of widget adding. Sure it's nice to be able to see the widget graphic but that paging gets tedious. Many launchers allow you to do a vertical continuous setting for the app drawer. Could they have a widget tab that does the same thing? Then we could quickly zip to the end.
Using the "App Widget Picker" app mentioned by alteredlikeness seems to be a great workaround for ICS on this phone (thanks!) and doesn't suffer from the same font issue.
I tried a several other launchers, and I have two observations for anyone else curious:
The "Widget Picker" is pretty much required if you're using ADW or Nova as a launcher (and probably others) and you want to be able to add widgets by press-and-holding the home screen, because there is no way to do it from their App drawer (there is no Widgets tab).
If you're using Apex, then you still need the Widget Picker for the same reason UNLESS YOU ARE ROOTED, then you can also have the option of adding widgets the "official" way from the app drawer. Apex popped up a message to that effect when I tried to add a Widget from that tab in the App drawer.
So has anyone come up with a workaround for those of us that aren't rooted? I'm using Go Launcher and I have this issue when viewing widgets.

I didn't try it with Go launcher, but you shouldn't need to be rooted. See previous posts. Just install the app "App Widget Picker" and you should be fine. When you go to add a widget, then make sure you select that app instead of the default. Worked for me.
I've haven't had any success using the app widget picker. When I long-press for widgets I do get a new widget list with white text and a black background. When I select a widget, app widget picker crashes. I've tried rebooting and it still crashes. I'm open to suggestions of how to try to fix this.
Apex Launcher alone now has the long-press for widget function, with no text/color issues..
Sent from my phone's mind
Hmmm. I'm apparently having the same problem. Honestly, I switched back to the stock launcher a while ago and haven't been using my own suggestion for this app. I can't seem to get it to work either, and I'm out of ideas. I just tried switching back to Nova launcher and ran into a lot of crashes with that, too.
Thanks for checking. Let me know if you come up with anything.
Guys I personally think that this is an Atrix 2 ICS software issue. It always happens and happened to me when I had my A2. On my skyrocket I use Nova and don't have a problem with the press to hold widget function. Works great, and no force close issues.
I'm in the same boat. It would be nice to have a widget picker that worked properly on ADW.
:update:
If you are rooted use this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780828
I finally got it to work, but I had to root my phone to do it (used the steps mentioned in the first thread of the Development forum).
In order to install any of the previously mentioned replacement Widget pickers, it needs to be installed into /system/app, and you needed to be rooted to do it. Simply installing the .apk the normal way causes it to crash when you pick the widget from the list.
Needless to say, it was a lot of hoops to go through just for a press-to-hold widget picker, but it now works perfectly.

Nova vs stock

On the s8, wanted to get opinions of people whom tried the stock launcher for some time, then moved to NOVA launcher,
Do YOU see a difference in lag experience between the two launchers on the s8 ?
(Not worried about customization differences)
I started with nova prime but slowly over time have gone to TW, it's not near as bad as it used to be. Didn't notice much lag on either launcher but I've disabled quite a few services.
Nova launcher is much smoother everywhere but I back to TouchWiz. Love the new TouchWiz.
Sorry Nova you not my preferable for this moment.
I have been using the Nova Prime since its release.
I always install it on any smartphone first of all. However, this time I gave a small chance to the new Samsung UI and was a few days with it.
No way, the Nova is way better/smoother.
Futhermore, the Nova launcher equalizes
the performance of any smartphone. For instance, my previous Note 3 and 4 got the same smoothness with the Nova as compared to the S8+.
Nova for me; much more flexibility and control of my home screen. widget placement is very limited with TW, not so with Nova. and now Nova allows you to swipe left and show Google Now. my (simple/clean) work layout is below . the only drawback using Nova vs TW is limited (if any) use of TW widgets.

On Your homescreen screenshot,
- Which weather widget is that on the top right corner?
- Is the Google Icon on Top left a part of the Wallpaper, or is it a Widget?
- Which Clock, and Agenda widget is it on the bottom left?
I Really like the way you have organized your homescreen. Neat and Clean, and quite informative as well.

weather graphic and temp is widget from Today Weather app. location and current condition is a custom Zooper Widget.

this is also a custom, but simple Zooper widget; it's comprised of a bitmap that when pressed, launches Google Now

clock is a single Zooper widget using the Samsung Clock font. the agenda is also a Zooper widget that includes the next alarm, and my next appointment. it uses predefined xml code included in the app.

thanks for the compliment. this is basically all i need to see when i'm working. as an FYI, the navbar buttons are from a substratum theme and @Tigerhoods 35pt high navbar overlay. also, my Nova desktop grid is 16x11; this allows for precise placement of widgets so i can get the widget layout exactly like i want it.
Going into developer options and cutting the animation speed helps a ton without sieging up the interface
nova is way better than stock!
Nova FTW
Nova for me! Every time I get a new phone I right away root and remove/uninstall stock launcher and have Nova as my main. I LOVE the fact that I can double tap the home screen to lock the screen (less pressing the button - less wear on button). On top of that it's just an over all smooth and fast experience with Nova
Thanks for the comments, and im aware of all the advantages nova has, But intrested in overall lag experience between the two launchers on the s8
Stock is gorgeous. Who says otherwise is just plain idiot who haven't tried all the options.

I want to use nova, but it's still have to much battery drain compared to touch wiz. ever since nova 5.0 it has had problem with battery drain, had that issue on my HTC 10 also. such shame, cus there are much better customazion on nova

I tried stock, nova and pixel launchers. It's very clear that stock is the winner.
I also asked my iPhone friend what he thinks is the best one not knowing which is which and not knowing anything about them, and he chose stock as well.
Edit: spelling
I tried TouchWiz but it doesn't allow me to resize my widget. And I don't believe I can achieve this setup with TouchWiz.

You need Nova beta and you need to download the Google Now add-on for Nova from the web.
