What should I get
A 16 Gb class 10 at 1500 INR
or a 32 Gb Class 6 at 1650 INR
What do you guys suggest...?
Sadly 32 Gb class 10 is not available in India
Do you feel the need to have 32gb, ir is 16gb plenty for you?
Sometimes class 6 outperforms class 10 in test

You're not purchasing nand-flash my friend. It will still be an sd card, and the read-write speed for flash memory on phones does not impact performance so much that you'll actually notice the difference in real life. The Class of a card has more significant implications in devices like high-end DSLR digital cameras shooting in data intensive RAW format at >18 Megapixel resolution setting in burst mode, or full 1080p video at 60fps, or even super slo-mo videos taken at speeds like 15000fps! Those are the extreme situations where you'll require a higher speed card.
If i were you, i'd focus less on the class, and go for the deal where i'm getting 16GB of extra memory at only Rs. 150 more! Sounds like a much better deal to me...
Class speeds do help with tasks though, such as HD Recording. It also can affect the speed your apps load up if they are the sd card. In theory, the higher the class of the card, the faster the card.
But this isn't always the case.

Are you sure about this? What I'm sure about is that apps work smoother when on internal mem than on low class SD, but havn't test the difference between classes yet, but I strongly believe there should be a difference, anyhow will check about it

You are right about apps working faster when on internal memory... but that is nand-flash, solid state flash memory interfaced directly with the mainboard... and IO read-write speeds here are much faster when compared to that done over an sd-card interface. Built in memory on the Mainboard will always be faster as compared to an sd card, no matter what class of card you use. You cannot infinitely keep increasing the speed of a card just by getting a higher class card. There are hardware bottlenecks that cannot be completely bypassed just by changing the card. Also, while this difference may translate into different numbers on a benchmarking scale in the lab, the conversion to real world performance is something the end user will not be able to appreciate. I say this from experience as i have used a class 10 8GB card previously on two devices (including this DS), and am currently using a Sandisk Class 6 16GB one.... and it's all the same to me...
A class 6 card is very very good as far as phones are concerned. I'm not saying that a higher class card is not better than a lower one - it most definitely is! But this topic was to decide the merits of getting a class 10 16GB versus a class 6 32GB, for very similar price. Given that choice, i think the latter makes more sense both practically and financially - it's a more optimal choice IMO.
Recently upgraded from a class 6 16GB to a class 10 32GB. If there is a speed difference I can't detect it. I'd focus on getting the storage space you require. You are not missing anything not having class 10 in the 32GB flavour.

Hello,
Now that Froyo more or less came out and apps will start having Apps2SD function, it's time for a MicroSD upgrade.
What I want is on-phone performance - that running heavy 3D games on SD would perform as smoothly as if it was on internal memory. Is there a general consensus on what brand/class would suffice, and what is overkill? I have no concern over data cable transfer speed, as I'm pretty sure the phone will limit the speed much before the SD card does.
I'm looking at this Sandisk 16gb MicroSDHC Class 2 for $35 after shipping:
http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Flash...ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=pc&qid=1275145563&sr=1-1
Anyone know if this would suffice?
Past threads have always went on tangents about good brand vs knock offs, how class is important vs. a marketing ploy, etc etc. Has a general consensus been reached in the xda community over what is sufficient but not overkill for onboard performance? Perhaps people who have already ran App2SD and use games and videos a lot have some input.
Thanks
I have a Top Ram 16 Gig class 6 and I think I paid about the same as you looking to pay for a class2. I also have a class2 that I have had for over a year. I used to use it in my blackberry. It still works and it is made by one of the cheap manufacturers.
Argh, I'm suffering from chronic SD corruption. So I'm in the market for a new chip. Think I'll spring for a 32gb this time. What's the latest on one that's both compatible and fast? And cheap too, that would be nice, links appreciated.
Considering that due to the amount of RAM the N1 has your main apps will be loaded already so card speed is not a significant factor, unless you use lots of different apps on a regular basis.
A faster card is beneficial mostly for the time i takes when I am loading up new music and possibly vids if you use it for that
This is the first 32gb MicroSD card I have seen "In Stock" Pretty expensive for a class 2 though.

Micro SDHC is a standard that supports up to 32gb. Of course it can handle it just fine.
I run a 16gb Class 6 in mine, works fine

The class is not needed I don't think

I'm running a 32gb Sandisk Class 2 in my Nexus as of last Friday. No problems (apart from a looooong time to refresh the media library after resyncing my music).
You can not get a genuine 32GB Micro SD card for US$40.
A good class 2 card (2MB/s) will offer you the same performance as any other class in your phone.
The limitation is not the speed of the card.
Buy a brand name card with the capacity you require and be done with the complexity.

I don't know too much about transfer rates but basically what you're saying is that a a brand name class 2 card will be just as good as say a class 6? I'm in the market for a new SD card as well, and the class 6 cards are much more expensive. I'm wondering if they're worth it.

No, in a phone they're not worth it at all and people who say so are either selling snake oil or are embarrassed because they've paid for one and are foolish for doing so.
The best I can do just at the moment is this:
wikipedia said:
In applications that require sustained write throughput, such as video recording, the device may not perform satisfactorily if the SD card's class rating falls below a particular speed. For example, a camcorder that is designed to record to class 6 media may suffer dropouts or corrupted video on slower media.

The Nexus, like probably every other phone out there, is a) not typically used for high rate sustained write activities and b) is designed to write to class 2 media to begin with.
If you have a large, highly fragmented sd card higher speeds will help. This of course is easy to avoid in the first place.
Get a higher capacity, class 2, brand name card for the same money and you're away laughing.
NB - If somebody waves a magic wand and all of a sudden the Nexus can record video at 1080p at a high enough bitrate then perhaps my advice would be invalidated... but don't hold your breath for that to happen...

Thanks for the info man! I was obviously misinformed, you just saved me a bunch of money
so just curious. now that CM 5.0.8 comes with 720p recording, would a class 2 still suffice?
I am also searching the web recently to look for a cost-effective high vol microSD. My finding is: don't 100% trust the "class" specified by mfr. I used ATTO Disk Benchmark to test two 8G microSD that I have: Transcend 8G Class 6 and Sandisk 8G Class 4.
<Transcend Class6> Write: 6-10MB/s Read: 16MB/s
<Sandisk Class 4> Write: 14MB/s Read: 20MB/s
From similar test results on the web, it seems that Sandisk uses to under-state the performance of their card. Finally I get a Sandisk 16G Class 2 for my N1, and here is the test result with the same setting:
<Sandisk 16G Class2> Write: 7MB/s Read: 20MB/s
Although Sandisk only specifies it as class 2, it actually performs like a class 6.
I suspect the importance of the speed of the SD card too, coz I think the write speed into ROM, should be way slower than 6-7MB/s (correct me if I am wrong ^_^)... If the speed of v2.1 w/o app2sd is acceptable to you, then v2.2 with 6-7M write speed card should be logically fine with you.

huh that's interesting. i just might pick that up from amazon then..
I Dont think fragmentation makes any difference to write speed, these are not mechanical devices like hard disks.
Also defragging is pointless and shortens the life of the card by increasing the number of writes.
Hello,

I would like to buy a 16go sd card but I'm not sure which one...

Could you help me ?

Sandisk is a reputable manufacturer, Kingston is another, but make sure you also use a reputable retailer so that you don't end up with a knock-off.
The Nexus One can't utilise speeds above Class 2 so unless you are planning on using the card in a dedicated card-reader a lot, or are thinking of future use, i wouldn't worry about spending premium amounts on faster cards.
min. class 4 is a must but you could look for class 6

This is true. My PC transfer speed is insanely slow. Took over 6 hours to transfer 8GB of data (was re-partitioning and did not have my microsd adapter)
A 16GB class 4 chip should be about $30, unless you jump on a special deal.

Obviously, but transferring files is the only reason why you would need a faster card. With the N1 seemingly capped at low speeds..yadda,yadda,yadda...
No it's not.
Recording in HD will require a decent speed, running data/dalvik-cache off SD-EXT will require a decent speed (things are noticeably slower on my C4 when I do that).
I've used a Class 2, Class 4 and Class 6 card on my N1 without any noticeable difference. I've put a clock on metrics like app launch times without any difference in the results.
People who spend extra $$ on faster cards convince themselves that they notice a difference to justify their spend. I wanted my Class 6 to make an improvement in daily usage but it didn't. I have to put it in a card reader so that i get any benefit from it, and that's only justified for transferring large amounts of data as you have to consider the time needed to remove/replace the card.
so personal expierences = fact now?
because I notice a major difference between my class 2 and class 6 in my N1
so that makes a new fact now
Can we have some facts on this issue?
For example, is it faster to take pictures if you have a faster class speed?
Is it faster in executing tasks?
etc.
Anyone have any results?
I'm thinking of getting a class 10 microsd card for record 720p video.
So far I've used Kingmax 16GB Class 10 with no problem.
I just bought a Sandisk 32gb MicroSDHC Class 2, hope it will work fine with everything, need a lot of space for music
I'm using a Patriot 16GB Class 10. Overkill? Maybe - depends on who you ask. But if you're putting the system cache on the card and recording HD video, it certainly doesn't hurt.

Speed (write) : 2~5 (MB/s)**
Speed Class : Class 4

I'm from the perspective of purchasing a memory card, 16 or 32 GB
I await your advice to not buy anything.
thank you
Just for the record, I'm more tempted by a 32 GB...
depends what you are going to be using it for?
music apps photos etc?
i have a 16Gb class 10 Joytech card in mine and it performs very well
Well, regardless of what you're going to use it for, extra free space is always welcome, and who knows, maybe you'll find yourself in need for more space than a 8 gb or 16, so, if the price difference ain't that big, go for 32.
The biggest and fastest you can get . Recently I bought 16GB class 10, because a/ I wanted to see if a faster card would make the shutter in video recording go away and b/ I needed a bigger card (one that would be enough to store a full season of TV shows - roughly 8GB and have space for my photos/music/apps). Because for me faster was more important than bigger I searched for class 10 cards and settled for 16GB (at a bargain price too - 30 EUR). I have to say that I'm very happy with it - it's really class 10, no shutter at all and I have enough space to copy a full season of a TV show to have with me to watch while I have nothing else to do.
whatever size you do get make sure its minimum class 6 or above otherwise as stated the speed (or lack of) may start to annoy you
SanDisk 16GB, best price-performance ratio!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Go for 32 Gigs.
even tho if youre low on money go for it! then you`l never go out of space
and the DHD dont slow down either so its a win win win!
Would recomend you to get atleast a 8gb class 6, you can get them for under 9GBP on amazon. In my opinion those are the bare minimums. You need class 6 to record 720p video without stutter and 8 gb holds decent ammount of music/videos.
It all depends on how much you willing to spend in reality.
Personally i just bought Patriot 16GB class 10.
I don't think anything above class 6 is very useful seeing as the memory card reader on the DHD may not be fast enough to read/write anything faster than that, but I could be wrong. I have a 16GB Class 4 Duracell myself which works at very high speeds, way above the classification. For it's price a very good card, in my opinion. But I'd go for 32GB if I had the money for it.

The DHD can read/write at speeds way higher than 6MB/s. My class 10 card has transfers of 19/11 MB/s (in the phone, not via a SD adapter) and there are reports of beter (and more expensive) class 10 cards working at even higher speeds.

Hi all,
What is the maximum capacity Micro SD card size on the TF and also, what Class type do I need?
Thanks in advance
32 gb has always been the limit.
OK thanks, but what 'class' type? I see class 4 and 10 advertised?
well the class is the write speed of the card. The higher the number the faster the speed with 10 being the fastest. I use a class 4 that i had from my thunderbolt and that works just fine
Dont think it matters what class, it's just the write speed of the sd card.
And what all can you use this SD memory for?
Class just specifies the maximum write speed, but with day to day use in the transformer (other than transferring the initial media) it's the read speed that's the most important. You''ll be storing and opening your media from it (music, pictures, videos and PDFs or other e-reader formats most often). Usually a card with fast write will have fast read speeds as well but there can be some anomalies with certain cards so it's not always so clear cut. In my experience anything above a class 4 seems to work just fine. If you're working with a lot of larger video files though probably class 6 or above would be better (and as it's also a little more future-proofed). I would always prefer to go with a named brand class 4 or 6 rather than a non branded class 10 though.

Even that isn't the whole story because it's incomplete - the class of the card minimum sustained write speed of the card under optimal conditions (i.e. a brand new and completely unfragmented card). I'm sure someone else can improve on that definition further!
As to what speed of card you need, from sdcard.org:
Class 2 : H.264 video recording, MPEG-4, MPEG-2 video recording
Class 4: MEPG-2 (HDTV) video recording, digital still camera (DSC) consecutive photo shooting
Class 6: Mega-pixel DSC consecutive photo shooting, professional video camera
Class 10: Full HD video recording, HD still picture consecutive shooting
Planning on doing any of these with your TF?
I've been using good quality Sandisk Class 2 cards in all my Android devices since the original T-Mobile G1, and *never* had an issue with them. Plus when testing, I usually get a write speed of around 7.5MB/s.
Regards,
Dave
I use a class 4 16gb and its fine. No problems. I think the faster classes are over rated. I typically try to find a class 4 or 6. Both work great. Don't waste your money.

FAssuming Asus implemented SD 2.0 standard, a 32 GB maximum storage capacity is your limit for any SDHC memory card. You can read more about it here: link.
As for which class you buy, it depends on what you're using the memory card for. Foxmeister answered with a class rating list. Do note that the higher the class rating, the more expensive the memory card is. Like wise with storage capacity. I recently bought my PNY 32 GB microSDHC class 10 memory card from buy.com for about $57. Caveat emptor with fake ones on eBay, especially ones shipping from China.

yep, picked up one of those "fakes on eBay". That really stunk.
My 8GB Memory Card in my Sensation XE if almost full now, and i plan to upgrade to a 16 GB MMC. I know that Class 4,6 and 10 have Read/Write speed or 4/6/10 MB/s respectively on the computer.
I want to know, how does these different classes affect when running in a phone except the obvious copying files thing.
Thanx in advance.
I believe as you said that the same holds true for the device. It has to do with the speed. I also just upgraded myself to a 32 . This is the first time I've used a 32. But I only have a class 4 ( same class that came with the device) as I really couldn't afford the higher class at this point. I've had no problems so far and it seems to be working well. I would like in the future to obtain a higher class and see the difference for myself.as I also wonder what kind of differences it will make on our device. Best wishes to you!

Well, I don't know if it is the same for micro sd's but in my GoPro I have a class 10 32gb SD card previously having a class 4. I would say that since I have upgraded to a class 10 my copying speeds to and from my camera have halved and the footage that I get seems to be of a higher quality. So I would say get the highest class you can afford. Hope that helped!
The difference in speed is VERY noticeable when taking pictures on a class 6 card compared to a class 4 card. There's very little delay when the picture is saved.
Class 6 was well worth the money in my opinion.
Edit: oh, and also, there's no lag when playing high bitrate video.

I notice faster restore and backup in titanium backup and smooth 1080 p playback and recording in my 32GB class 10 card

Okay, Thank you everyone
I think i am gonna go with "Transcend Memory Card MicroSDHC 16GB Class 10". I'm gonna order it and will post what difference i notice ! :highfive:
your posts really helped
i read in the official sd site that in order to achieve optimal performance you must match the speed class of the card with the one of the card reader. for instance, if the sensation's card reader is rated class 4 faster cards will provide no benefit -- and a few drawbacks, too. the problem is getting to know what class the sensation's card reader is mounting
Class 10 is usually optimised for digital photography/video where small numbers of very large files are written. Smartphones read and write hundreds or thousands of small files and hence might preform better, as the card fills up with a class 6.
Having said that I doubt anyone would be able to really notice the difference in real life...
Also, go for at least the 32gb card, price difference is usually tiny and you'll take a while to fill the larger card.

bought 2x 64gb U1(c10) sdxc and filled with dramas/movies in 1night after I bought these, so capacity filling really depends on people
Good call with the transcend card. As far as I know they are the only ones with ecc on board, and I have never had one fail.

Yeah, your'e right. My friend who is a photographer by profession told me the same thing.
I don't know how its where you are but where i am, i see that Transcend 16GB class 10 is Rs.885 / $16 / GBP 10 and the 32 GB Transcend Class 4 is Rs.1400 /GBP 16/ $ 25 so it kinda gets expensive.
There is one from a brand called 'Strontium'...the class 10 is cheaper than Transcend Class 4......32 gigs. But have you heard the name before ? i havn't...

Using a Patriot 32 GB class 10, without any problems. Faster than 16 GB class 6.
Go for it.:good:

well, if there is no means to figure the reader's speed out, i would not waste money on a class 10 and play it safe with a class 6 or 4. at the end of the day i am no speed / stats / benchmark freak, and prefer to solve actual problems rather than having the fastest stuff available. i'd take the most stressful task in real life (namely: playing 1080p video without hiccups) and then opt for the cheapest card that handles it without a flaw
I have a Sandisk Extreme Pro 16GB card on my sensation. Really have much greater speeds when transferring data between PC and card. My nandroid backups used to take about 300 seconds with class 4 card, which have come down to about 150-160 seconds with new one. Also I'm using hard swap, which benefits using a higher speed memory

Okay, Thank you
Btw...what is hard swap ?
If you root your phone then go for class 10.
But if you stay on stock rom there is no need for fastrr then class 6.
I do not know the price difference (where you are buying) but I think for everyday usage you will not notice the difference.
