Hello,
Now that Froyo more or less came out and apps will start having Apps2SD function, it's time for a MicroSD upgrade.
What I want is on-phone performance - that running heavy 3D games on SD would perform as smoothly as if it was on internal memory. Is there a general consensus on what brand/class would suffice, and what is overkill? I have no concern over data cable transfer speed, as I'm pretty sure the phone will limit the speed much before the SD card does.
I'm looking at this Sandisk 16gb MicroSDHC Class 2 for $35 after shipping:
http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Flash...ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=pc&qid=1275145563&sr=1-1
Anyone know if this would suffice?
Past threads have always went on tangents about good brand vs knock offs, how class is important vs. a marketing ploy, etc etc. Has a general consensus been reached in the xda community over what is sufficient but not overkill for onboard performance? Perhaps people who have already ran App2SD and use games and videos a lot have some input.
Thanks
I have a Top Ram 16 Gig class 6 and I think I paid about the same as you looking to pay for a class2. I also have a class2 that I have had for over a year. I used to use it in my blackberry. It still works and it is made by one of the cheap manufacturers.
Argh, I'm suffering from chronic SD corruption. So I'm in the market for a new chip. Think I'll spring for a 32gb this time. What's the latest on one that's both compatible and fast? And cheap too, that would be nice, links appreciated.
Considering that due to the amount of RAM the N1 has your main apps will be loaded already so card speed is not a significant factor, unless you use lots of different apps on a regular basis.
A faster card is beneficial mostly for the time i takes when I am loading up new music and possibly vids if you use it for that
This is the first 32gb MicroSD card I have seen "In Stock" Pretty expensive for a class 2 though.

Im not sure the nexus 1 can handle a 32GB card , wow that's a lot lol, but you can get one for like $30 on ebay... http://bit.ly/9J7u2S
You can get a 16gb class 10 for about $90.00.

Micro SDHC is a standard that supports up to 32gb. Of course it can handle it just fine.
I run a 16gb Class 6 in mine, works fine
bewar ebay, there a lot of folks selling fake cards. They even read as what they were sold as but then fill up mighty quick............
The class is not needed I don't think
I have a class six and have been running games on it from sd for 3 months cant tell a bit of difference. I run linpack from sd and it works fine too!
the only real 32gb card is found here., http://www.sandisk.com/products/mobile-memory-products/sandisk-microsdhc

I'm running a 32gb Sandisk Class 2 in my Nexus as of last Friday. No problems (apart from a looooong time to refresh the media library after resyncing my music).
You can not get a genuine 32GB Micro SD card for US$40.
A good class 2 card (2MB/s) will offer you the same performance as any other class in your phone.
The limitation is not the speed of the card.
Buy a brand name card with the capacity you require and be done with the complexity.

I don't know too much about transfer rates but basically what you're saying is that a a brand name class 2 card will be just as good as say a class 6? I'm in the market for a new SD card as well, and the class 6 cards are much more expensive. I'm wondering if they're worth it.

No, in a phone they're not worth it at all and people who say so are either selling snake oil or are embarrassed because they've paid for one and are foolish for doing so.
The best I can do just at the moment is this:
wikipedia said:
In applications that require sustained write throughput, such as video recording, the device may not perform satisfactorily if the SD card's class rating falls below a particular speed. For example, a camcorder that is designed to record to class 6 media may suffer dropouts or corrupted video on slower media.

The Nexus, like probably every other phone out there, is a) not typically used for high rate sustained write activities and b) is designed to write to class 2 media to begin with.
If you have a large, highly fragmented sd card higher speeds will help. This of course is easy to avoid in the first place.
Get a higher capacity, class 2, brand name card for the same money and you're away laughing.
NB - If somebody waves a magic wand and all of a sudden the Nexus can record video at 1080p at a high enough bitrate then perhaps my advice would be invalidated... but don't hold your breath for that to happen...

Thanks for the info man! I was obviously misinformed, you just saved me a bunch of money
so just curious. now that CM 5.0.8 comes with 720p recording, would a class 2 still suffice?
I am also searching the web recently to look for a cost-effective high vol microSD. My finding is: don't 100% trust the "class" specified by mfr. I used ATTO Disk Benchmark to test two 8G microSD that I have: Transcend 8G Class 6 and Sandisk 8G Class 4.
<Transcend Class6> Write: 6-10MB/s Read: 16MB/s
<Sandisk Class 4> Write: 14MB/s Read: 20MB/s
From similar test results on the web, it seems that Sandisk uses to under-state the performance of their card. Finally I get a Sandisk 16G Class 2 for my N1, and here is the test result with the same setting:
<Sandisk 16G Class2> Write: 7MB/s Read: 20MB/s
Although Sandisk only specifies it as class 2, it actually performs like a class 6.
I suspect the importance of the speed of the SD card too, coz I think the write speed into ROM, should be way slower than 6-7MB/s (correct me if I am wrong ^_^)... If the speed of v2.1 w/o app2sd is acceptable to you, then v2.2 with 6-7M write speed card should be logically fine with you.

huh that's interesting. i just might pick that up from amazon then..
I Dont think fragmentation makes any difference to write speed, these are not mechanical devices like hard disks.
Also defragging is pointless and shortens the life of the card by increasing the number of writes.
Im planning on buying a 16 gb microsd card but all i can find is cards class 2 is that enough for recording 720p and loading applications installed to the SD card ? keep in mind that i also plan un buying a optimus 2x which has 1080p recording
Which brand do you like better? sandisk? kigston? trascend?
I read that sandisk class 4 cards are REALLY good but they dont show up in their website or amazon :/ , it seems they only sell class 2 cards, and kingston offers cards class 10 and 4 , class 10 seems a little excessive
Class 4 but really class 6 is what u need class 2 will die
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
yeah minimum a class 4
class 2 is just a pain, it will make you want to throw the phone away, and explode it into a million tiny bits
class 6 is the normal speed for a fluid experience
Im using a Sandisk 32GB class 2 card, it writes at 5~7Mb/s depending if its a large file or several smaller ones and read as higher than 15Mb/s

If you are getting a 16gb card, or less sandisk, kingston or toshiba, class 2 or class 4 offers similar read/write speed, although the toshiba and kingston is a little faster, the sandisk is much stable.
Read is about 11-14mb
write is about 8mb
I had a toshiba 16gb class 2 in my i9000, it plays 720p videos without any problems, now i am using a lexar 32gb class 10, results aren't any different.
Hope this helps.

Approximate usd 85.
The class designation of SD Cards ONLY represents the sustained WRITE speed to the card in MB/s. So, class 2 means it can be written to at 2MB/s, while class 10 means it can be written to at 10MB/s.
The designation has no reference whatsoever to the read speed of the card. So, basically every response stating otherwise in this thread is wrong. You should be able to get suitable sustained read speeds out of any class 2 or higher SD Card for the purposes you will be using it for. It will just take you longer to transfer the data to it in the first place. As for video recording from your phone, class should should be plenty as I'm pretty sure 720P comes in under 2MB/s.
Wow, yea. Just that i seen some online shops which class 2 32gb cost 100$
But on amazon the lexar class10 32gb is really cheap...

Electroz is right. Its only about transferring and stuff.

The speed of the card used in the phone does not make much of a difference, its onlt when you transfer data to and from Pc, but its always best to get the fastest available, if the budget is the main problem, consider getting a kingston or toshiba, but make sure you get one that is made in japan, as the taiwan version is a litttle slower, japan version are becoming harder to get now, since the japan factor has transferred their production to the taiwan site.
The classes stated on each card is only the minimum it will reach.
Class 2 at least 2 mb read/write
class 4 at least 4 mb read/write. etc.
So it can be anything above the actual figures.
For more info on microsd, see my link in the sig, although its a little out dated.

The actual retail price for the lexar 32gb class 10 is 149 usd.
No problems with 32GB Class 2 here, it can record and decode 720p just fine, and there is nothing else as intensive as those tasks that you'll be doing with this handset (may not be enough to support 1080p in future handsets, but that remains to be seen).
Don't buy into this rubbish about needing Class 4 or 6 cards, unless you regularly load very large numbers of small files to your card, in which case you may want the higher write speeds.
when you run apps and/or games off the SD (App2SD) the slower the card the more time it takes to have a fluid experience, specially heavy stuff from gamesoft, or simply opening the application manager and waiting for the icons to load
repeat the same tasks with a slower card vs a faster card and you'll see the difference
of course you'll not really see much of a difference, unless you card is more than 50% full, and have over 300+ apps installed

amazon is always over priced, i rather buy them locally at the computer stores
Adata microSDHC 16GB, class 6 $35
Wintec microSDHC 16GB, Class 10 $36.49
Patriot microSDHC 16GB, class 4 $40
Kingston microSDHC 16GB, class 10 $102
i can also get authentic
Kingston 32GB microSDHC Class 4 Flash Card W/ Full Size SDHC Secure Digital Adapter $116.15
so at £43 pounds i easily get 2x Adata 16 GB class 6
which i already have many (each of my 5 phones has one, plus another one on the video camera CountourHD 1080p), and they work really good
LOL i always run out of battery before i run out of space in my video camera

If your getting cards from a non generic name brand, the read speeds should be around 15-25Mb/s , My class 6 card actually had a slower read speed of 15Mb/s compared to my Class2 ( 28Mb/s )
At the end of the day the difference between loading something was barely noticeable even skipping to different portions of a 3.7GB movie, Im guessing the phone it self is the bottleneck and not the card.
1% or 99% full should have ZERO effect on the read/write speed this is not some mechanical drive nor having 1 or all the apps in the market.
EDIT:
Again the class rating is only a rate on what is the minimum write speed the card can handle, sandisk rates their 32GB at class 2 when it writes at 6-7Mb/s ( making it class 6 ) on the phone and about 10Mb/s using a card reader ( making it class 10 )

yeh, buying from a local store is cheaper, from the same price of a kingston 16gb class 10, you can get a 32gb class 4, but the fastest microsd on the market is the kingston 32gb class 10, but stock is very limited due to high prices, and you probable need to place an order and pay in advanced, i'm still searching for one, since the last time i heard about it about 9 months ago.
adata are the cheapest cards now, but the speed are rather slow, compared when they only released the 8gb about a year ago.

No problem
I had a look at the Lexar, I've never used any Lexar products before, so I simply compared the reviews on both. According to the reviewers the Patriot is faster, and I've used Patriot's before and found them to have good speeds.
I guess you're gonna have to work out which is the cheapest and if it's fast enough for your needs. Personally I'd go for the Patriot, but I suggest you google both for reviews as it's you that's going to be using it.
If it doesn't have to be 32GB then this is worth a look..

That said, I have started re-ripping all my CDs (yes I actually pay for my music) to FLAC formats. With memory prices going down, the time is ripe to convert to loseless goodness.

Overkill much? 6 months ago I would have said pretty much the same, but once I got the SGS and voodoo sound FLAC made complete sense. You will notice the difference between mp3 and FLAC with a decent set of headphones. One example, "Broken" by Nine Inch Nails, I never bothered listening to this on previous phones or mp3 players, it sounded terrible because it's a loud, distorted, in your face album, but having re-ripped it to FLAC for my SGS I'm actually able to enjoy it again while I'm out and about, I also listen to a lot of electronic stuff, most of Ultimae.com's catalog for example, and the difference is quite noticeable, to me at least.
Number 1 use for my phone is as a music player these days thanks to supercurio and FLAC.
And yeah, I pay for my music too, I'm dreading having to re-rip over 600 CD's and pay for another HDD to hold 'em all on.
Just so you know
On the samsung i9000, there is no difference in performance between 32gb Class2 & Class10

That's not entirely true, there is a difference, but whether or not you'll notice it just depends on what you're using the card for. If you're camera is set up to record HD video to your external SD then it must have a write speed of 6MB or you will end up with choppy, stuttering crap quality video. If you're just using the external SD for mp3's or playing movies you've transferred from your pc, class 2 is fine, but it will take you longer to transfer stuff from your pc to your phone

the kingston 32gb class 10 are not fakes, they were release just after the sandisk 32gb class 2, when they were first released, but were taken off the market and discontinued, due to high price, i saw them and was gonna get one when the price drop (the shop i saw them are a authorised dealer, so you dont need to think the shop is selling fakes).
it was about USD 170, when you compare them to the class 4 version at USD 55, why are they expensive, well they are the fasted microsd to present, with write at 16mb/s and read at 22mb/s.
I also have 2 lexar 32gb at class 10, and the speed is nowhere near the kingston.
lexar write speed at 11mb/s
read speed at 17mb/s
if you still want to try out the speed, you can still get the 4gb, 8gb and 16gb at class 10, just to give you the approximate price, the 16gb will set you about USD 81, more expensive than a 32gb micro sd.

I stand corrected
I tried a Playstation emulator app, and I am pretty sure that I could get more games working after I got my class 10 16gb card.
Since I use my phone for emulators, browsing, music, media player, remote desktop and probably as a travel computer soon... then having a faster SD card really comes in handy. If nothing else, then it comes in handy when deleting 8+ gb from it, just to put another 8gb+ onto it. Having a few extra mb/s really matters when doing that now and then.
Is the built in SD actually class 10? I really hope so, but if not I should probably consider moving a few more apps to the SD.
the built in memory is a nand memory chip soldered on the main board, it's reads and writes faster than microsd.
I've been wanting to upgrade my external card (8gb I think) to a 16 or 32. I've only just recently become aware of the different 'classes' and speeds of cards... just how much difference is there (in usability terms, gallery, music etc) between say a class 4 and 6 (or 8 or 10) or whatever the different classes are.
Raw numbers won't really help me (as I have no point of reference lol) but are they REALLY much faster in normal use? Are they worth it?

To be honest unless you have your camera set up to record to the external SD I don't think you need to worry too much about the class of your card, 720p recording needs a write speed of 6Mbps, but as the prices have come down a lot it makes sense the get the biggest card you can justify price wise. One advantage of a higher class card is that it's quicker to transfer files from your PC to your phone.
If you want a 16GB class 10 here's a decently priced one
http://www.play.com/Mobiles/Mobile/...viglink&awc=buyat&_$ja=tsid:11516|prd:viglink
If you want a fast 32GB class 4 this is one of the best prices I've found so far
http://www.mobymemory.com/products/MobyMemory/SanDisk-32GB-Micro-SD-Class-4.asp
(I have a SanDisk 8GB class 4 and it writes at just over 7Mbps, Sandisk are know for under rating their cards)
If you just want a 32GB, here's a class 2, (SanDisk so probably faster than rated)
http://www.mobymemory.com/products/MobyMemory/Sandisk-32gb-Micro-SDHC.asp
I bought a class 10 sd to replace my previous class 6.
I didn't notice a change! Speed was the same as on class 6.
Buy a class 6 sdcard instead of class 10. They are cheaper too
I think many people still dont understand the meaning of the classes that is stated on the memory card.
the class is just an indication of the minimun read speed and write speed that the card can offer.
so a class 2, 4 or 6 can reach the speed of a class 10 or even a class 16,
class 2 minimum 2mb/s
class 4 minimum 4mb/s
class 6 minimum 6mb/s
class 10 minimum 10mb/s
class 16 minimum 16mb/s
as for people who think there really is'nt any differences when compared class 2, 4 with a class 10, this will depend on what you use it for.
if your phone supports HD photo and recordings, then you will need a fast card, you will notice the speed differences, especially during recording videos, but for mp3's and phone normal use, then it does'nt show any differences.

Well put
I am looking at either a Lexar or Samsung both class 10, both around £37.
any advise as to which one is best based on anyone using.
The other question is do you need to format before use?
At the moment I have a 16gb but it is 98% full. Never chenged a card before was planning to copy the old card into a folder on laptop and then back onto the new card.
Any advise welcome,,,,,,,,
Go with transcend. If they have 32gb class 10.
They only do a 16gb class 10. I looked for Transcend first as I prefer this brand.....

I like transcend more than anything else.
I never had luck with transcend, i have a sandisk 32 gig which works great,
i had a kingston 32 class 10 within a few weeks it just burnt out on me it stop reading and wouldnt want to format or anything
I'm also looking for a 32gb micro sdhc for my HTC Vogue. I currently have a Sandisk 16gb that is nearly full. Earlier today I stumbled onto this thread from here at XDA...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1150369
I found it quite helpful. I hope you do too.
I was surprised that class 10 cards weren't the best choice for the things I use my Vogue for.
Here is a passage that surprised me...
"Class 2 and 4 cards have better random access speed and random read/write than class 6 or 10 cards in general. To get higher sequential write speeds, manufacturers sacrifice the random access speeds.".
I would agree with Random read/write access might be better in Class 4 cards than Class 10...
But arent we forgetting that most of the applications are read more than Written when u open it.. I think a faster read speed with lower write speed would still be better than having lower read/write all together...Not unless you are downloading a torrent in background and running HD game with it... infact in that situation.. both cards will fail badly..
I prefer Sandisk.
A class 4 should generally give proper performance... 10 seems a bit overkill imho.
I've used the 8GB class 4 memory card that came with the Sensation for a while, and after switching to a 32GB class 10 Lexar I must say - it DOES make a difference. It's a totally different experience.
Been using SAMSUNG ESSENTIAL 32GB MicroSD for more than 2 months without issues. It has helped me to parallely download videos from tubemate in high speeds. Good writing and reading speeds. No slowdowns/jatter in 1080P recording which iam always using to cap my child.
Just bought a 32GB Class 10 Samsung card from play.com for £34.99. Working great so far!
I got the 16GB SD card for two reasons
1. The 16GB has a faster write speed.
2. I didn't have $90 to spend on the 32GB.
http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/memory-storage/MB-MPAGA/US?from_mobile=true
Oh also I did not pat $55 for the 16GB

Copied a film over to it via usb last night and was getting 11.6 mb/s. Haven't tested with the card in a reader but would probably be faster even still.
Phil
I know class 10 is faster then class 4 or 6, but just wondering if the Sensation takes advantage of a faster card? For example, will recording in 1080p (on the sensation) be better if i get a class 10, versus a class 4 or 6?
thanks
???
10 char
I would like to know people's opinion or facts on this as well. I'm currently looking for a 32GB card to purchase and this information would really help out.

thats why im trying to figure it out. there is a hugh price difference between a class 4 and class 10 32gb.... Im just trying to figure out if our phone actually uses the extra speed of a class 6 or 10... Also, if recording video on 1080p will be better if i go for a class 6 or 10 over a class 4 (which I think came with the phone)..?

I can say confidently that our phones will perform better using a class 6 over a class 4, but the question of "will our phone use all the speed a class 10 offers?", I can't answer as confident. But I would think that it should not have a problem using a class 10 to its full potential. What class 10 micro are you looking at?
Using Samsung as an example:
http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/memory-storage/MB-MPAGA/US
This is a $55 microSD (it was half off last week on Amazon[Cyber Week]), but the read/write is 24MB/21MB and a class 4 only gets 15MB/7MB(http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/memory-storage/MB-SS4GA/US [this is a SD but of a class 4]).
If anything I would get the class 10 just to be future-proof and avoid having multiple microSD's around the house. I'm using Samsung as a reference and I do not have experience with their memory cards so I am not trying to sell Samsung. I did buy a 16GB class 10 microSD from Sammy via Amazon for Cyber Week (only $30), its being shipped right now, if you want an update I will make another post (class 4 v. class10).

thanks. appreciate the info.
on amazon there is a Samsung class 10 16gb for $20 right now. 16gb would be fine right now, but I dont want to be running out of room in 6 months as I like to record video which takes up a ton of room. so thats why im looking for a 32gb (even though i think that will be way more then i actually need).
on amazon i actually dont see any class 6 32gb cards; except for 1 knockoff brand. so it seems like most 32gb cards are either class 2, 4, or 10. i want to go above a class 4, but class 10 are expensive...
thanks
A-Data Class 10 microSD 32GB
bought that one couple of months ago, verry happy with it. was the cheapes one to get back then, about 55€ / 75$
getting 10,5MB/s writing and about 12MB/s reading on USB port. just a little slower than my flash stick...
didnt notice any change while recording videos, but i dont unse the camera that often.

If you are in the U.S. Fry's has the 32GB Class 10 for $20 off
http://www.frys.com/product/6786695?psrid=14599570
That probably expensive also, but I could not find a 32GB Class 6 either.
I'm using a class 10 16gb card in my sensation
seems fine, only thing that is fast is displaying pics in gallery
wish I got a class 6 and saved the money, I haven't tried 1080p video....
just tried a 10sec video. Wrote instantly on card and playback instantly too
10sec vid is 13.96mb
so I think a class 6 card can write at 6mb/s where as class 10 writes at 10mb/s
class 6 is fine!
I was in the same position as you are right now.
I did a little bit of reading and decided to buy a good (SanDisk) Class 4 over a cheap (alot of offers from brands I never heard of) Class 10/6.
My reasons:
1. Good card with lower speed = less chance of corruption
2. The read-speeds are ~ identical, since I don´t really use 1080p I don´t need high write-speeds (allthough 1080p records without a problem)
3. Random acces speed on lower class cards is higher, since the high write speed is a trade off between random access speed and write speed.
After reading about all that the decision was easy

now im really confused...
a good compromise would be a class 6, but obviously i cant find any brand name class 6 32gb.
I dont really know much about random access speed vs write speed....can you enlighten me? are you saying that class 4 is faster in some situations then a class 10?

The random access speed is splitted in write and read. It is the speed whith which a random bit can be written/read.
It is the value that determines the performance of an app using SD-Card for data.
So in daily use, there shouldn´t be much difference between class4/6/10. If you want to use your SD for daily putting tons of different stuff on it, you may be better of with a class 10. If you put a lot of Music on it and leave it there, a class 4 is the way to go.
(Anyone correct me, if I´m wrong here, but that is what my research brought up)
I'm the same as Sibbi and am using a good quality (SanDisk, same again) class 4 32GB uSD card.
And I have no problems with it at all, it keeps up with video recording (at full HD) and plays back perfectly.
I suppose the additional speed of a class 10 might make the difference if you were copying GBs of data across the USB cable when loading up the card with music or something (in which case just be patient!) but for normal use I really don't have any issues.
The sensation is a good quality expensive device, so my advice would be to use good quality memory in it for reliability, rather than take the risk lowering the reliability of the handset with lower quality accessories.
