[Q] Reinstall Mango - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I just bought an HTC Trophy and the first thing I always do when I buy a smartphone is format the card and do a clean install of the latest firmware available. On all my iPhones so far ( 3G, 3GS, 4 ) this was an easy thing to do using iTunes, but I haven't found an answer for WP7 yet, although I did find some threads tackling some similar stuff.
So my question is: How can I format my sd and then do a clean install of Mango? And is that even possible? ( I read somewhere that I would have to get 7.0 first )
Thank you so much!

Menu>Settings>About>Reset phone> and accept

Welcome new wp7 user!!
what Budniu says is that wp7 just need a hard-reset to clean itself...
then sync it with Zune (on your desktop...it's like itune) and you'll be promped to name your phone & it will search for availables updates...that's it.
No need to revert back to 7.0

@Budniu Thanks, I've already done that, I thought there was some other way though.
@NebZoNe Yes that's exactly what I've been doing for the last 5 mins, looks like I'm set to go. Thank you!

SAMSUNG sgh i780 beginner questions

Ok, first of all I started the thread here as I am not aware where it would belong, I am fresh in here .
I received my PDA last month as a gift, it was probably purchased in Kuwait.
It has WM6, the version is JPHE2.
My main concerns:
Downloading my @hotmail e-mails automatically connects using Data plan, I need to use WiFi.
MSN Messenger causes GPRS to connect, too. I want to use WiFi.
Most importantly, I am willing to upgrade to WM6.1, I need the official ROM without any modifications if anyone can guide me through.
I have tried using samsungmobile.com but the version is "invalid" according to them, and the MEA regional website has only one software upgrade and it does not relate to my PDA.
I am aware these questions were probably asked by several posters before me but I did not seem to find the answers.
Thank you for your time reading, and hopefully answering!
I am most interested in upgrading to WM6.1, even if not Arabic (not JP).
Thanks.
Is it that hard?
I am considering entering a "customized" device version for UK and get its upgrade. What do you think?
if you really want to upgrade to a non arabic version of WM 6 try entering this "DXHL2" on samsung site. be sure to install the drivers
once you downloaded the update file. you need to extract the contents to a folder. you also need a hex editor to modify the updater.
it is the largest file on the extracted files. you need to look for a value "DX" on the near end of the file and replace it with "JP"
So you can proceed with the update..
good luck!
What's the country?
A link to a hex editor, please.
And what are the risks? Can I still restore to factory settings for example? I am worried it might lock out or something.
Thanks

Welcome to the forum
Perhaps you havenñt noticed that this is an HTC devices only forum
However in off topic section there is a thread about samsung
Good luck,
I noticed and that is why I posted in the General Discussion > General forum. Thanks for the tip anyway.

Same Issue
I have the same issue here.
I have a Samsung (Bought in Kuwait) which holds the JPHE2 version.
I wonder if the solution posted above (upgrading to DXHL2) worked out for you??!??!?!??!!
Would it be ok to do that??? Would it mess up the cell phone or did it work just fine???
Anyone
Anyone???
Hey Khudary I have not tried it.

hi,
My fren have i780 with PDA+phone version JPHE2.
i try the above method and downloaded DXIB1 which is my phone version. using the Hxd to edit the hex, i able to update teh eboot and PDA to DXIB1 but the phone cannot be updated to DXIB1. currently the phone is working fine using WM6.1
my question is
1. is it OK if the phone and PDA version is diffrent.
2. anyway to update the phone part to DXIB1. if it is OK when can i find the phone only rom so i can update it using mirage.
TQ
I recommend you customized rom, because it's faster than official rom.

the HexEditor approach did not work for me.
My i780 PDA and PHONE version is JPHE2
what did work for me was this:
Follow heineken78's instructions from no.2 onwards
I use ironeagle's ROM
Mirage application will say "Launch Failed" but its ok if the phone boots up. If you look up at the version, it will say PDA version is DXIB1, PHONE version remains JPHE2.
Other than the period (dot) key being misplaced on the KB layout, everything seems to work fine (WIFI, SMS). I haven't tested Calls yet but i guess they're ok too.
Big thanks to ironeagle and heineken78.

[Problem]No Sound at Esmertec JBed.

Hello everyone, I'm having a huge trouble at playing java games on my S710. All games works with no sound. No matter the instalation file, when I install any game, sound is never played. Can anyone help me? I've tried a lot of Esmertec JBed versions, tried Hard Reset by software, but the problem remains. Please help me, I really use java apps.
Thanks
i too had the same problem for quite long. Everytime i did a hard reset, i restored the whole data and tried java but the sound never came back.
but later i figured out that is was because of Q9 real player media files plugin. I uninstalled it and java had sound again.
in your case also it might be because of some third party software. u can try uninstalling softwares one by one and checking java after each uninstall. Hope it works!
Man, I think you're right. Sometimes, when Windows Media is in use, the apps sound comes back. But How would i Uninstall Windows Media Player? Can it be done?
no its not the media player, it is some third party codec such as q8 which i used to play rm files in my phone! have u installed any of such codec?
No, didn't installed any other codecs. The only program unusuall installed is Adobe FlashLite, and other modifications are only Windows Live Messenger and Office Update.
try a hard reset and install a java game, without installing any other software. I think u will get sound then. BTW which rom do u use?
My phone stills with it's original ROM. I'm afraid off doing something wrong while trying to update it. But I'm thinking about updating it for Windows Mobile 6.1, can you recomend me any Rom?
The Rom Installed is Windows CE, Version 5.20 (Compilation 1238)
if u want to update, u can update the 6.1 by Dr. Gonzo or any of the 6.5, either FM's or FB's. but first of all u should backup all your data and read this thread. It has all flashing instructions contained in it.
and one more thing after successfully flashing your rom and before installing any other software, try installimg a java game, i think u will get game sound back!!!
GL!

Also make sure Vox is not SIM locked (i.e. locked to a specific carrier). But if you hard reset your device, nothing can go wrong (possibly ), but do it only after a full charge .
My phone is SimLocked, is this a problem?

Yes, if your phone is sim locked then, in order to upgrade to an unofficial ROM, you will have to buy an unlock code from jockeyw after the upgrade. Everyone here with sim locked phones have to do the same. Once you have bought an unlock code , you will never have to buy it again. You more info u can click here

m32 is correct. simlocked phone will only refuse sims from other operators. But still if you flash you will have to get your phone sim unlocked!
And if you read and follow the instructions carefully, then there is nothing to be afraid of flashing.
Well, I tryed to sim unlock my Vox, but now I have another huge problem. I went to my phone operator(TIM Brazil) but my phone could not be unlocked cause it's previous owner inserted more then 7 wrong unlock codes, now I have to send my phone for HTC Assistance =/.
is your phone covered in warranty? If yes, then i think you should give your phone to them. So far i have seen that HTC have best customer support regardless of what the problem is. U can also contact jockeyw first, he might help you with the problem. I cant suggest much with regard to 'sim locking' since i dont have a sim-locked device!

Treo version

Hello everybody. I'm completely noob, so please have a little patience with me. I have a Treo 750 in italian, and my final goal is to flash it to wm6-english. But for start, i don't know what Treo i have. I read about Cingular, At&t, etc...
mine sais TREO750-1.16-H3I, h-ware version A, firmware version 1.27.0b.00.
So whom am i talking to every day? Is there a special version of wm6 for my phone?
I thought i'l start from here. Any help would be appreciated...
Ok... noone? At least tell me how I can figure if my phone is unlocked or unbrenched...
Or could someone point me to a tutorial-thread of flashing the phone... from the beginning to the end.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Cheetah_WM6
Maybe you'll find something around here for the beginning, ...
Stupi ... it doesn't matter which Treo you have when it comes to flashing ROMs.
Just do the HardSPL first. That way you can pick the English language ROM of your choice to flash and it will work. You also get the benefit of unlocking the phone so it can be used on any GSM network.
Ideally, you'd be best to pick an English ROM provided by the same company that provides your cellular service, but it is not required. If you pick one from another cell company (or a hacked one) then you might have to enter your network settings manually, but that's the only difficult part.
Plenty of resources in this forum. Do some searching and you'll find everything you need. Good luck!
One question, thought... i could'n find the answer on the forum. I downloaded the unlocher, but it sais it only works with spl 1.11, at least... Mine is 0.22.
I tried then to update with RUU_Hermes_QTEK_WWE_2.11.255.1_102_6275_1.38.00.10_108_Ship.exe, but in the "current information about your pda phone" it didn' recognize my pda. I got affraid of bricking it.
So, it seems to me my first problem is updating the spl from 0.22 to 1.11. But I cannot find the software to do this..
Come on men, this has to be simple. I need some help here, please. I'm stuck up with wm5 over a week now...
so, the first thimg I must do, a hard-spl, that's what I understood. This can be done with ceetah_unlocker.
Ok, i launch the application, and it sais it can't start only with 1.11 spl. Mine is 0.22.0000
So the first thing i have to do is update this 0.22 spl to 1.11. Am I right?
But how?
Find one of the WM6.0 desktop updaters and try installing that. They don't require a HardSPL first.
Use one of the following:
AT&T English: Treo750_2_25_ATT_EN_DesktopUpdater.zip
Rest of World English: Treo750_2_23_ROW_EN_DesktopUpdater.zip
Three Australia: Treo750_2_19_H3E_DesktopUpdater.zip
Vodaphone UK English: Treo750_2_18_VFU_DesktopUpdater.zip
I don't have any links as they aren't hosted by Palm anymore. You should be able to find them by looking around the XDA Forum, or by searching the net and/or torrent sites for the filenames above.
thanks a lot, man, but I lost my pathience and i run the cheetah_unlocker... and I didn't brick it. So, now I'm ready for the next step...
please, if anyone pm me with a win 6...
ok, my spl is ok (1.4), i put the CHEEIMG.nbh on my sd card, and I run the step 1 of cheetah unlocker. And nothing happens.. still boots with wm5. I even did a hard reset.
Man, i'm goig crazy... what am i missing?
Please, someone could upload again one of those 4 files? I could find neither of them with goolge.
So, i found the updater, but it won't update my phone since it's in italian...
guess I'll need to do it the hard way. Please, can someone point me a post or a tutorial to update from 5.0 to 6?

I must be missing something. I made those steps, all went ok. But how the heck do i change the windows version? That's my goal, not to flash the spl.
I got a win 6 image (i hope, at least), copied the CHEEIMG.nbh file on the card (which is fat 32), and i repeated step one from cheetah-unlocker. As I hoped that after flashing the new windows would automatically install. But nothing happened, the old win was up and running.
Come on man, I'm not such a bad person after all to deserve this... I may have killed a few birds or cats in my childhood, but this is too much... you're killing me.. I'm stuck in this spagetti windows, and I can't upgrade to a normal english windows... what the heck am i missing?
well, if you haven't gotten it sorted by now, hope this helps: once you've hard spl'd, put the new image that you want to flash in the root on your card [<2gb, fat32 formatted] and then hold media and push reset. your phone will cycle into the bootloader [rgb screen], detect the image and ask if you want to flash.

recover the backup made during update process
hmm, how do I get the backup file?
In Zune go to the update page of your phone. After Zune finished searching updates for your phone their should also be a possibilty to restore a backup. You can also use this tool to restore your backup: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103011
The location of your backup is:
C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Phone Update\
EDIT: If you don't see a possibilty to restore your backup in Zune & don't see any files in the "Windows Phone Update" folder & don't have a developer unlocked phone & didn't move your backup to any other location: The only two ways to get a developer unlock are:
1. Flashing an older ROM to get back to 7004 or 7008.
2. Register as a developer at Microsoft - this costs money.
experience7
okay, I get it now.. thanks a lot..
Result: I flashed with an older ROM, to 7004
can provide link to the 7004 htc mozart rom? thanks.
Please help me!
The story is this... I've updated my phone first to 8112 and I used like 4 language packs, everything was OK, so I did the 8773 update using more languages (I believe six of them) and now I can't access to the about section (no, I cannot do a hard reset) to the WIFI settings, also to the add new email, the thing is that I cant restore it also because zune keep saying to me that I have no restore point in this PC (thats wrong, i DO have one) and theres nothing that I can do...
I've tried to send the language packs in order but the phone keeps telling me "update unsuccesful" So... What can I do? How can I reinstall new software or restore it? HELP PLEASE!

It appears that your phone is in an unstable state (I suspect due to missing language packs sent during the update)
The last generated backup would be at the the following location:
%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Phone
If the backup does exists at the above location maybe try using WPCabSender to do the restore.
Also is it possible that the phone is in a guest sync relationship within Zune? Maybe that could be a reason why Zune does not "see" the backup in this case.
If worse comes to worst, I think you might have to flash it back to your original ROM and start over.
Ttblondey ,thanks a lot....

[Q] Windows Phone Mango Upgrade Fail

Ok my problem is I used the tool to upgrade my Windows Phone to mango beta 2 (build 7712) from NoDo. I then got a new computer. No longer having the old NoDo backup I cannot revert, but then Microsoft said you would not have to go back to NoDo. So I have tried multiple times, but everytime I try to upgrade to the RTM 7720. It fails at the end and gives me an error code 80180048 and then my phone is fine, but is still on 7712. I have also hard reset it and that didn't fix it either. Can anybody help with this?
I cannot help you.
I cannot help you, you are very smart, but I cannot help you. I am terrible sorry. I would help you if I could.

I am kinda looking for a somewhat better answer than that, but thank you anyway.
Look on the dedicated forum, or the wiki, for your phone. You'll find the various release ROMs. You can flash one of those ROMs to your phone to either put it back on NoDo or upgrade it to Mango directly. This will erase all content on your phone, but since you already tried a hard reset I'm guessing you won't mind.
