[Q] Stand Alone GPS and Google Maps/Navigation - Verizon Droid Charge

Does Google Maps and Navigation not work when you only have stand alone GPS running? I unchecked google and vzw services and left stand alone on, but it seems that this way I can't get a location lock. The reason I turned off google services is cuz it drains battery, but i dont understand why i cant get a lock with stand alone? Does anyone know a good alternative to Google Maps that will work with just stand alone gps?

Standalone basically means the physical gps. The physical gps is dodgy on this phone.
Sent from my pocket-sized, Linux-based computer using electromagnetic radiation... and Tapatalk.

Often times I use GPS Essentials and use the tracking feature. This way you don't lose lock each time you exit Maps.
If you on EP4D, you shouldn't have too much trouble with GPS

connectivity idea, curious if it is even possible

I am curious, but the only way I can think of to ask this question is to provide an example or two, so bear with me.
You decide you need directions. Fire up Google maps, click my location and it says you need to enable data...DOH!, back out to the menu (or follow the prompt), enable either GPS or Data, and go back into maps. Get what you need, and then leave Maps. Dont forget to turn the GPS or Data back off!
Wouldnt it be better if when you enter Google Maps, it would fire up the GPS or Data connection automatically? And when you back out or have a period of inactivity, disable it.
Same thing with the internet, I know Locale and others can turn on and off the wifi depending on where you are, but, for example, when I am home I rarely need wifi. However, when I open the internet it would be great if it looked for a friendly wifi signal and tried to connect if possible. That way you are always connecting the fastest possible method for your application and doing the least amount of work. If the disconnect would be an issue (since none of the programs has an exit button) maybe a variable timer could be set, or maybe base it off of inactivity.
Like I said, they are just ideas, and I have never understood why nobody (WM for example) has ever implemented anything like this. It seems like it would help conserve battery power and at the same time greatly simplify things.
When you put the G1 to sleep it shuts off the wifi connection automatically, then when you turn it back on, it reconnects to the network if you're still near it.
I have always wondered why Google Maps doesn't turn on GPS when it needs it. It does on the iPhone as far as I know. I have really wanted this to happen for awhile but I just figured Google would be the ones to add it.

Maps App Using Tons of Battery

The title pretty much says it all. The Google Maps app is using tons of battery on my Xoom, even though I've not opened it even once. Is there any way to make sure this doesn't happen EXCEPT turning off the GPS? I still want to be able to use the GPS at will without having to go turn it on, I just don't want Maps to sit there and hog my battery.
Thanks!
Maps app doesn't run on my Xoom when I'm not using it, so I don't have this problem. GPS in on.
You haven't got google latitude updating your location?
I had noticed it using up maybe 5% battery a day because I had traffic updates on. It was keeping my xoom awake during the night, but 5% ain't much.... dunno what TONS means for you. latitude, auto checkin, traffic, buzz updates? check them all...

Yeah, I realized that after I posted. However, Maps is still running after turning off Latitude and logging out of Latitude, although it's considerably better on the battery.

GPS?

I just got my g2x and installed EagleBlood on it immediately.
But I noticed there wasn't a stock GPS app?
Is it broken?
If not, what GPS app do you use (that uses the GPS signal since I don't have a data plan)

Does it have turn by turn GPS?
Do I need wifi or does it use the GPS signal thingy.
Google Maps has turn by turn navigation, but it uses data to load the maps. You'll have to find an app that downloads the maps entirely to the phone if you want to use navigation without data, and they're most likely expensive. Not to mention it'll take up a LOT of space on your phone's memory.
I believe what he's looking for is the navigation app (separate from google maps). I think you may have to install google maps first. Never really looked into this before. Might have to check out google mobile. Gotta eat dinner, then i'll take a look into it if nobody else has by then.
EDIT: Ok, yeah, according to Google, all ya gotta do is download google maps and navigation comes with it. If you don't have a data plan, then yeah, you gotta download maps and get a pricey navigation app (that i'm aware of)
Try CoPilot Live. Turn by turn directions. Loads the maps onto your phone. It can be done state by state or the whole U.S. It does take about a gig to load the U.S. It is the best GPS program I have used. Much better then Google maps does not need a data connection and does not constantly loose the GPS signal like Google Maps/Navigator.
Navigation by Google works wonders. Needs a data connection at first to cache route but then its good.
It downloads all layers and surrounding areas around your route if you get off track. Also grabs POI info along the way.
I tested it on a recent trip and was impressed. Had Airplane mode on the whole way after it synced up.
I've used iGO in the past. Still got a copy that I've never touched in years since Google maps.

Google Now and GPS

Good evening everyone.
This is a question that the 4 billion pages on google cant seem to find....
with google now, should I keep my standalone GPS, VZW location services and google location services?
I want to know because right now I have all 3 on, and my battery is suffering from it.
and this maybe a little off topic, but along the same lines;
I have a smart action "turn wifi off at school" and "turn wifi on at home" and it uses locations to determine where im at, what GPS service needs to be enabled for that to work properly, cause again I have all 3 services selected, and I wanna disable as many as i can to save power.
Anyone?

If you only enable "Use wireless networks" and disable the other 2 you should be fine

I leave Google and GPS on. I turn Verizon off.
I have no battery issues.
Are you sure it's the location services causing issues?
Check your battery stats and see.

Question How to disable/stop GPS on watch when using GPS on phone?

This has been bothering me for a bit now. When using the GPS (Google Maps) Navigation on my phone, the GPS on my GW4C turns on too. If I stop the navigation on my watch, it stops it on my phone! ARGH!
This was never an issue on any of my Tizen watches before. Has anyone come across this too? If so, how did you fix it?
I didn't think Google Maps was option on Tizen watches.
Anyway, this is how you fix. While in the google map app on watch touch the search icon. Then go to settings and then auto-launch. You can choose when watch auto-launches from phone. I have it off for driving and on for walking and cycling.
Sadly, none of Wear OS apps can use location data from the phone. I've tested this using Google Maps, Strava, and my own apps. All of these apps stop working if you disable GPS on the watch, even when the GPS of the connected phone is on. This behavior contradicts the official documentation https://developer.android.com/training/wearables/data/wear-location-detection
On a watch, get location data using the FusedLocationProviderClient. The FLP automatically uses location data from the phone if the watch lacks a GPS sensor.

I'd prefer if smartwatch apps used phone's GPS because it's much more accurate and because the battery wouldn't drain as fast on the watch. This was easy to implement on Tizen watches, but seems to be impossible on the Galaxy Watch 4. I've tried both the Fused Location Provider and requestLocationUpdates() methods, but nothing worked.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
