Hi everybody,
I'v got a Nexus S with original ROM (no custom ROMs), now running android version number 2.3.6.
I don't get ICS update, and after waiting for a long time, decided to do it manually. I have two questions:
1. Is the update stable for normal use.
2. How do I do the update? Where I find the update file? is there a good and simple guide?
My device details are:
- Nexus S
- Android version: 2.3.6
- Baseband version: I9020XXKF1
- Build number: GRK39F
- The phone was bought at BestBuy in the US, as a SIM free device.
Tnax for any help.
Dodo.
Which carrier are you on? Your device is most likely i9020T if you bought it at bestbuy. You can find the update.zip in THIS THREAD, and as far as install instructions, the video below is pretty good. (just skip to 1:40 and go from there) also keep in mind:
-the video says you need T-mobile nexus s. You don't. as long as you have the i9020T your good.
-The .zip file will have a different name than the one in the video.
So, go to the thread above, and scroll down to "FULL ROMS-FLASHABLE ROMS" and click on "Android 4.0.3/IML74K/XXKI1 Radio/KL1 Bootloader" It should start downloading right away. after that, just follow the steps in the video.
I believe you are using the same phone as me...I am on FIDO in Vancouver Canada. I am using the CyberGR MOD V.7 which can be found in android development section. Extremely Stable i.e no issues at all..with everything working. You gotta jump the ship..do it do it...
Are you rooted?

I'm assuming, since the OP doesn't know how to flash a ROM, that he is NOT rooted...

Got the nexus s today, want to upgrade to ICS
Which version/ROM shuld i use? (preferably the stock official Google ICS 4.0.3, where can i find this?)
Is there a guide anywhere or is it as simple as root, install cwm and update?
Secondly what model is my nexus s? the build number is GRH78 with baseband version as: I9020XXJK8, will this matter? do i need to flash another rom before ICS?
Thanks Craig
for model of your nexus look behind battery and here is a guide to root http://nexusshacks.com/nexus-s-root/how-to-root-nexus-s-or-nexus-s-4g-on-ics-or-gingerbread/ and i recommend this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1463437
Just wait the official ota is just now being sent out. Or if you don't want to wait there is some pretty stable roms out, whichever you prefer. But the official ota is just now going out in waves.
As stated above, first you need to figure out whether you're i9020a or i9020t which is located under the battery.
You do not need to flash another rom to get ICS and you don't have to root it if you don't want to.
GRH78 is 2.3.1 I think. That's weird because I thought everyone was on at least 2.3.3 by now. First you need this file
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11616407
I think you want the GRH78C.
Or you could just follow it here
http://www.androidcentral.com/how-manually-update-your-nexus-s-android-233
I'm not 100% sure about which version of the nexus these are for though. I'm pretty sure they are for i9020. I am just unsure whether the same file works for both T and A versions. I seem to only be able to find one version of the file, so maybe it's the same.
Anyway, using that flashing method, you should now be on 2.3.3.
All of the official upgrades from Google are here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063664
Just click on your corresponding model, whether it's i9020a or i9020t.
Then you can go from 2.3.3 to 4.0.3 or whatever you want. Use the same flashing method as you used on the Android Central site.
bedalus has done a great work on benchmarking ICS roms. You can find his thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1481856
I've used CyberGR v7 (he has updated to v8) and Oodie Miui ROM. Both have been great for me. You might want to try a few before you know which one you like the most.
To check the version of you phone, you can go to Settings | About Phone. You can find Android version, baseband (radio) and kernel.
Stock ICS can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445635
Note that this is only for i9023 devices.
Today I updated my Galaxy S2 to the ICS update released in Canada. This update removed my Root access that I had earlier. My question is, How do I reroot this version of the phone? I'm confused on this kernel download part, what kernel am i suppose to and all that sorta thing
Galaxy S2
Android Version: 4.03
Baseband: I9100MUGLD3
Kernel Version: 3.0.15-I9100MUGLD3 - CL377577
Build Number: IML74K.UGLD3
same with me
i think we are going to have to find a different rom to use? ive been using Foxhound for a long time and its working well.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1162715
Anyone else? Please help me

Does this method work on the bell stock rom? I am only asking because on the youtube link it is making reference to the att sprint tmobile and international.
Hi,
I have the Japanese S2 LTE, for which there appear to be no custom ROMs. So I'll have to (urgh, this is not why I bought an Android phone) use the carrier's ROM. BUT when I try to do an OTA update, it boots into CWM. I assume this is because the OTA update is setup to work with the stock recovery. So does anyone know where I can get the stock recovery from? I assume I'll need to use Odin?
edit: more info:
Model: SC-03D
Android version: 2.3.6
Baseband: SC03SOMLB9
Kernel: 2.6.35.11-SC03DOMLB9-CL980106
[email protected] #2
Build number: gingerbread.OMLB9
Also, I'm pretty sure the recovery will be the same as the Skyrocket. Almost everything about the phones is the same, save for the buttons and LTE chip.
TIA
Not sure of your model number, but a quick Google search came up with this...

Thanks for the reply. Sorry, SC-03D. It's the Japanese LTE model on Docomo. The LTE radio is different, and it only has one hard button with two touch buttons (like the original Galaxy S).
That thread is titled just Galaxy S 2 - will that work on an LTE?

For any future reference - I found a complete stock Docomo ROM on SamMobile and flashed it in Odin. My phone is now being treated (by Kies/OTA update) as a fully up to date, unmodified phone. Not that that really helps, Docomo still haven't released ICS. In October 2012. Still on Gingerbread. Yep.
i have been using my inspire 4g for few years now with the stock 2.3.3 w/o any problem until i accepted the update notification from at&t for 2.3.5 which i hate now. Long story short, it just made my exchange email crap and it became a burden. I do not know anything about rooting so bought a used Atrix 2 hoping to have ICS on it.
But the phone came withe the following:
Android Version: 2.3.5
System Version: 55.11.11.MB865.ATT.en.US
Build Number: 5.5.1-175_EDFFW1-11
As soon as I power on, the setup screen comes in where I enter my google details and it takes me to home screen and all is well. But when I click the 'Contacts' icon, it takes me to AT&T address book directly and starts rotating endlessly. Never give me an option to disable AT&T address book in contacts. It goes directly there and never completes even though I have data and wifi enabled. I tried at&t support as i don't have at&t phonebook registered - they asked me to upgrade to ICS.
Then I tried the OTA ICS upgrade and it always says the 'The device is upto date and no software upgrade is necessary'. It never upgrades the OS. At this point, at&t said they can't do anything and asked me to talk to Motorola. Motorola said this phone is running a version that is not supported so they can't help either. I have been googling and reading a lot of posts in this forum for help without much success.
I did check out the following and asked for help there:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2047087&page=2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1779968&page=69
Can someone please point me a thread or give me steps i need to follow to get this phone out of stock and working condition?
I am also working on getting my inspire out of stock OS but would love to get this phone fixed first.
Thanks in advance.

If you want to get the official ICS then here is the fxz for AT&T US phones (if you are somewhere else or using a different carrier, then you probably don't want this and need to supply more info.)
A couple of things to note. Once you upgrade to the official ICS there is NO going back to Gingerbread (unless someone hacked something together and I missed it), but it's best to assume you won't. Make backups before you do anything, better safe than sorry. If you don't like not having an option to revert to Gingerbread, then there are other options, but not the one mentioned.
If all is good and you want to flash the Official ICS, then you can visit the noob guide which will tell you how to flash a FXZ and what is needed.
Thank you. I really don't like the idea of not going back to Gingerbread but at this time my priority is to get this atrix 2 up and running. So am ok to get the official ics but the following says i should go to 2.3.6 in order to get to ics. Is that still true for the link you provided?

The link you posted is for ICS Leak#1, that will get you on ICS and as long as you're on Leak #1 only, you can revert to Gingerbread by using a specific FXZ from the link you posted. Your choice. The Official ICS that I posted has everything and will overwrite everything, so whether you flash from 2.3.5 or 2.3.6 it's going to upgrade the bootloader and system. Just remember, if you use the Offical ICS, then no more Gingerbread. Personally, I haven't wanted or needed Gingerbread since I got ICS.
Dear jsknair.
You can directly flash with OTA ICS update, no need to go to 2.3.4 then update to 2.3.6 the OTA ICS.
I very easy as other guy said study noob guide. After that within 10 min you will be on ICS and its really good you don't think to go back to GB.
I like to thanks Jimbirdman :thumbup:to help me for update my Atrix 2.

Hi,
Yes there is a CM 9/10 for the phone. I have actually installed CM9 on my phone. I wouldn't advise using CM10 yet because some bugs are still being worked out but i'm not discouraging you from trying =). To install it here are the instructions:
1. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1730954
That website has everything you need. Also if anything goes wrong there is a method to restore the original firmware. If you need any more help reply and i'll help out =)
Best of Luck!
hahahaha to lazy to search
argh. here is the method ur about to request/Q.1 answer : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21953587&postcount=1
Q.1 follow the link that i gave it to you and it will give you not just root but a kernel and BML roms installation guide
Q.2 installing CWM to latest? ahm idunno about it? "I" its possible but twrp is possible ..
Q.3 we dont have stable cyanoge. but barebone i (think that is the name) a gingerbread BML? roms that, that is stable..
And if you're worried about it since it's not your phone, you can at least get to official GB through Kies without voiding the warranty... if you're doing stuff from here you can be sure that the warranty is shot. The Kies one you get straight from T-Mo or Samsung, so if it hoses (and the phone is still under replacement protection) they should cover it. Here... it's more complicated.
the TRUTH is im AFRAID to MOD her phone because its not mine and i dont know what correct files
should i use please help me guys!!
The other option is to have someone do it for you. I soft bricked my phone so I sent it to MobileTechVideos. They fixed it and installed a new ROM for me. Rooting and ROM service is $30. The repair service + new ROM is $60. Make certain that you specify which ROM version you want. No affiliation, just a satisfied customer. Good luck.
I would also wonder does your aunt need a special ROM on the phone? Is this her first smart phone? If so I would just root it and remove all the bloat apps with titanium backup and the phone would be tip top with amazing battery life. Find out what she needs in a phone before installing the ROMs because some features may not work.
I would check for software updates as well because it should be at 2.3 so you can just run it rooted with 2.3 and its a great phone. I ran it like that for quite awhile.

thanks for those who replied i just updated her phone to 2.3 and rooted it plus i removed the bloated apps (just like i did when i got my 1st smart phone hehe!)
