[Q] [GRH78] Upgrade to ICS - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Got the nexus s today, want to upgrade to ICS
Which version/ROM shuld i use? (preferably the stock official Google ICS 4.0.3, where can i find this?)
Is there a guide anywhere or is it as simple as root, install cwm and update?
Secondly what model is my nexus s? the build number is GRH78 with baseband version as: I9020XXJK8, will this matter? do i need to flash another rom before ICS?
Thanks Craig

for model of your nexus look behind battery and here is a guide to root http://nexusshacks.com/nexus-s-root/how-to-root-nexus-s-or-nexus-s-4g-on-ics-or-gingerbread/ and i recommend this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1463437

Just wait the official ota is just now being sent out. Or if you don't want to wait there is some pretty stable roms out, whichever you prefer. But the official ota is just now going out in waves.

As stated above, first you need to figure out whether you're i9020a or i9020t which is located under the battery.
You do not need to flash another rom to get ICS and you don't have to root it if you don't want to.
GRH78 is 2.3.1 I think. That's weird because I thought everyone was on at least 2.3.3 by now. First you need this file
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11616407
I think you want the GRH78C.
Or you could just follow it here
http://www.androidcentral.com/how-manually-update-your-nexus-s-android-233
I'm not 100% sure about which version of the nexus these are for though. I'm pretty sure they are for i9020. I am just unsure whether the same file works for both T and A versions. I seem to only be able to find one version of the file, so maybe it's the same.
Anyway, using that flashing method, you should now be on 2.3.3.
All of the official upgrades from Google are here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063664
Just click on your corresponding model, whether it's i9020a or i9020t.
Then you can go from 2.3.3 to 4.0.3 or whatever you want. Use the same flashing method as you used on the Android Central site.

bedalus has done a great work on benchmarking ICS roms. You can find his thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1481856
I've used CyberGR v7 (he has updated to v8) and Oodie Miui ROM. Both have been great for me. You might want to try a few before you know which one you like the most.
To check the version of you phone, you can go to Settings | About Phone. You can find Android version, baseband (radio) and kernel.
Stock ICS can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445635
Note that this is only for i9023 devices.

[Q]What to do: Upgrade or Downgrade from 2.3.6

Hi guys. I got my Nexus S like 1 month ago and it's just great. The only problem that I have it's this crappy stock ROM I have from upgrading Android Build from 2.3.1 to 2.3.6 (Which appears to be latest when pressing System Update button in Settings).
I've been looking around for some custom ROMs to mount on my Nexus and I found out that none (or maybe I've found out wrong) support 2.3.6.
Should I downgrade to 2.3.4 or upgrade to ICS? And if so, how do I do it?
There is a Dev section where you can look for custom ROM.

Went there and found for 2.3.4 and 4. Updated it to ICS, but I'm having a small problem installing from sdcard, hehe...

[Q] Help with Installing ICS on I9020

Hi everybody,
I'v got a Nexus S with original ROM (no custom ROMs), now running android version number 2.3.6.
I don't get ICS update, and after waiting for a long time, decided to do it manually. I have two questions:
1. Is the update stable for normal use.
2. How do I do the update? Where I find the update file? is there a good and simple guide?
My device details are:
- Nexus S
- Android version: 2.3.6
- Baseband version: I9020XXKF1
- Build number: GRK39F
- The phone was bought at BestBuy in the US, as a SIM free device.
Tnax for any help.
Dodo.
Which carrier are you on? Your device is most likely i9020T if you bought it at bestbuy. You can find the update.zip in THIS THREAD, and as far as install instructions, the video below is pretty good. (just skip to 1:40 and go from there) also keep in mind:
-the video says you need T-mobile nexus s. You don't. as long as you have the i9020T your good.
-The .zip file will have a different name than the one in the video.
So, go to the thread above, and scroll down to "FULL ROMS-FLASHABLE ROMS" and click on "Android 4.0.3/IML74K/XXKI1 Radio/KL1 Bootloader" It should start downloading right away. after that, just follow the steps in the video.
I believe you are using the same phone as me...I am on FIDO in Vancouver Canada. I am using the CyberGR MOD V.7 which can be found in android development section. Extremely Stable i.e no issues at all..with everything working. You gotta jump the ship..do it do it...
Are you rooted?

I'm assuming, since the OP doesn't know how to flash a ROM, that he is NOT rooted...

ICS Pre-Upgrade Question

Hi everyone!! Have a question to ask and was wondering if anyone could help.
Right so this my situation:
I own a HTC Sensation XE, I have S-OFF, Rooted and SuperCID.
So basically i'm all set for custom roms (gingerbread ones anyway).
I have also installed a custom rom (Pyramid3D v8.3.0 - gingerbread based).
Now I am considering upgrading and installing a ICS based custom rom, however it appears that in order to use the ICS based roms, I have to flash new firmware.
Now I have no problem with doing that, I understand how to do that.
My question is:
If I upgrade the firmware and install an ICS based custom rom, but for whatever reason I do not like it, can I then simple downgrade back to a gingerbread rom?
Will a gingerbread rom work fine with the newer firmware?
Do I have to downgrade the firmware back?
Is there any disadvantage to using the newer firmware on gingerbread if possible?
Is the downgrade as simple as installing any other rom? - if that possible
Thanks in advance for help you guys can give!! Appreciate it!!

Depends, 1.23 (from 3.12) should work fine. 1.27 (from 3.24) won't.

You'll need HBOOT 1.23 or 1.17 to boot GB ROMs. I used 1.23 for a while with ICS and CM7. I've only recently gone to the unlocked 1.27 F/W, seems more stable on ICS. I think I noticed a battery life benefit with CM7 & 1.23, so an advantage.

You need to do it via the PG58IMG.zip method rather than recovery.

Short answers to your questions:
Yes - but you need to downgrade the firmware
No
Yes
You can't use new firmware with Gingerbread
Yes
Detailed stuff can be found in this most helpful post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1480061
I think you'll find it worthwhile to move to ICS. Good luck.
edit: Doh! Missed it by that much....

+1 on the move to ICS.
My question is:
If I upgrade the firmware and install an ICS based custom rom, but for whatever reason I do not like it, can I then simple downgrade back to a gingerbread rom?
Only if you have a GB compatible firmware installed.
So if I was to install 3.24 then GB roms most likely wouldn't work?
Do I have to downgrade the firmware back?

You'll need HBOOT 1.23 or 1.17 to boot GB ROMs. I used 1.23 for a while with ICS and CM7. I've only recently gone to the unlocked 1.27 F/W, seems more stable on ICS.
So 1.23 is the best bet if I want to "try" ICS and then can go back if I choose
Another question which I also have then is:
Some ICS roms say that they require firmware 3.24. To clarify, If I install this firmware and an ICS rom, there will be no way for me then install most GB roms (broadly speaking).

From the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459767
You can reflash an earlier F/W so go back to 1.17, as always if it screws up it screws up. It's the sort of thing I tried to avoid where possible, but sometimes is necessary.
One point though, when you flash 1.23 or 1.27 you'll get a new Radio. If you regress the F/W to 1.17 you'll need to flash a compatible Radio as well.
You "should" be able to try before you buy ICS on 1.23 and also go back to GB. That said, I've found my current combo (VI 3.0.5b7 and 1.27.1100) more stable than an earlier version of the ROM was on 1.23.

NO GB on this F/W

How do I root my stock G2x?

So, I've looked and looked, and found nothing.
I am on a basically stock G2x running stock 2.3.4. I have flashed CWM 5.0.2.0. So, how do I root? At this moment, I'm not worried about loading a customer ROM. I wanted ICS, but it looks a little too buggy for me right now. Regardless, before I do anything ROM wise, I need to root so I can use Titanium to do a full backup.
So, how do I JUST root without installing a custom ROM?

SuperOneClick also worked for me on 2.3.4. (Whichever tool you use, use at your own risk!)

Very important:
Before you go installing any ROMs you need to know you that your phone's baseband (sometimes abbreviated BB) is probably March 2012 (some refer to it as v21y baseband). You can verify by going to Settings > About Phone and scrolling down a little and looking for a month and a date in the baseband name (i.e. Mar 11 2012).
Here are a few of the many threads about the one problem you're going to have installing a custom ROM if you have a March 2012 (save kwes's modified 2.3.4 stock).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1647127
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1651116
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1643702
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1603057
In summary: March 2012 baseband only works with 2.3.4 stock ROM and kwes's modified 2.3.4 stock ROM. If you flash another ROM you will not change the baseband so you will be stuck with a new and incompatible baseband that won't work with your ROM. The only way to change the baseband is to update using LG support tool. In other words, the only way to get a custom ROM problem-free in regards to baseband compatibility is to downgrade to stock 2.3.3 (which will downgrade both ROM and baseband) via LG Support Tool. All of the custom ROMs (including all of the ICS ones) work with, I believe, all of the 2011 basebands.
Nothing more nothing less

Thanks for the info! Looks like I'm on March 2012. Originally I wanted ICS, but the more I read about the issues, the more I think I should wait for the official release. The data drops would kill me, and I stream video a lot, so that would be out. Didn't LG say they would roll out ICS to the G2x in Q2 of 2012? I believe we are in Q2, woot! I just can't justify the risk vs. reward for a ROM change, unless you guys have suggestions... lol
Thanks again!
If you use the stock rooted kwes rom with that baseband you will have no issues at all...
Ive been running it for a few weeks and its as solid as rock...i have it OC'ed even and no issues ...
that baseband (march2012) has worked wonders for my phone...

LG has not stated the G2x would get ICS. The statement you are talking about it the European version P990 and has been move to 3rd Quarter now. I don't expect to get ICS as T-Mobile has EOL'd our device.

[Q] Atrix 2 Firmware downgrade from 4.0.4 to 2.3.5

Hello,
I wish to ask whether it is possible to downgrade android 4.0.4 on my Atrix 2 back to its original firmware: android 2.3.5 which has flash support.
Is there a way?
Respectfully,

For some regions/firmwares, I think you can (like MEARET and/or SEARET).
For AT&T and some others, the ONLY WAY that is possible is if you never installed the official ICS OTA that was pushed to your phone, and are on the first leak (which you would have had to install manually yourself).
Plus, flash support? That's your major reason for wanting to go back? Just search xda for flash on ics.. like this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/sitesearch.php?q=flash for ics
Thank you

Thank you for that...I used the forum and found the flash for ICS...I don't need to downgrade.
Thank you much.
