[Q] Overclocking - HTC Sensation

Wondering if i can overclock my sensation without rooting it?? How difficult is it to root??

No you can't overclock without root.
Not difficult if you read the instructions properly.

Alright. Is there any method of rooting you recommend?

What android version are you running?

Im currently running 2.3.4 with Htc sense 3.0

Im not computer amazing, but i got it easy enough.
Then start flashing roms, and having fun
Steve

I installed a custom kernel that specified overclocked processor speeds, and just left it, haha. It hurt my battery life, so I got rid of it, personally.

The guide is here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300
Overclocking can decrease battery life ( Some say so )
And yes, You need to root to overclock.
Rooting isn't tough if you follow the instructions.

Overclocking is pointless unless you are having an epeen competition with your mates for the highest benchmark scores. The phone won't feel any faster in day to day use although your battery life will suffer and your phone may crash more often.

Overclocking only noticeably affects benchmark scores and BIG games like gta3. However undervolting is great for saving battery. You need a custom kernel for either tho, so you need root.

I agree with Asa2303 - I'm using overclocked and undervolted kernel which is great during everyday use (better battery life), and amazingly fast while playing 3d games.

Stock kernel on ICS has excellent battery life; however, with an overclock kernel you might get better results with games and stuff. Some say the phone responses much faster, but I can barely tell the difference. I don't use my phone to play games though.

Overclocking questio.

Howdy folks. Could someone point me in the right direction? Thinking about overclocking but have not done it. What are the benefits / rewards?
Is there an app or program i can to do this?
And what is a safe range?
Thanks in advance!

Benefits : Faster phone, smoother ui
Cons: Phone may heat up if overclock is set too high
For this phone 1500 is the highest, safest number we can get to right now. I would suggest setCPU, which you can find on XDA for free. (search setCPU)
You'll need a new kernel first, the stock one doesn't support oc. Go with Faux's assuming you're running a rom compatible with it (and most are).
After that, download Pimp My CPU from the market and you're good to go.

To be honest with you, I notice hardly, if any, real-world phone speed increase when I overclock...barring benchmark numbers. I'm not really sure why that's the case for me, and why for some others it's such an extremely obvious difference (or so they claim). Perhaps I'm not running the same cpu intensive apps that they run. But for general, day to day, running of my phone, it's just not worth it for me due to the battery cost.
So I would love to hear from some of you where "precisely" do you see such a marked improvement on the speed of your phone?
Well, first off, make sure you have a custom Recovery installed... Then find a ROM you'd like, and then, flash a custom OC Kernel..
You'll need an app such as SetCPU to control the overclock.

Are you using the stock launcher? It's alot smoother with the stock launcher if OCed to 1500, although i don't notice a difference from 800 to 1500 on launcher pro.

[Q] HTC Sensation 4G T-Mobile US Kernel above 1.5Ghz

Has anyone used any kernels for HTC Sensation 4g (TMO US) above 1.566Ghz?
I am currently using a ROM by Mike1986 and kernel witch took my phone to 1.566Ghz and i am loving it.
However, i am a big OC freak and i would like some pointers on any tested kernels above 1.566Ghz, preferably that work well with Mike1986's ROM as i find them to be most stable our of all i have tried (i have tried 3 different types).
Any input is highly appreciated and welcome. Thanks team.

I honestly don't see the benefits except lower battery life and a warmer device, I doubt you'll notice the speed difference past like 1GHz. All of the higher freqs seem pretty much the same and aren't really worth the bother with, use a governor that accesses higher freqs quicker and you won't be needing high freqs.

What governor would you suggest??? also, i know that when using you phone and maybe even playing games i wouldn't see much of a difference between the stock 1.2 Ghz vs 1.5 or 1.9Ghz but it's all about the bragging rights, lol. I like to go to my geeky friends and slappin’ a higher clock frequency than they have on their poor devices or silly I Phones. Also I have to tell you from my tests I do see Mike1986’s latest 3.6.7/4.1.7 Rom using much less battery life than stock Rom. I have noticed about a 10% improvement, maybe even more.
Also i do see a big improvement in Benchmarks. When i was using stock 1.2Ghz setting i was benchmarking much lower than the 1,5Ghz i am at now.
Thanks again for the input.
The benefit of custom ROMS and kernels, is that they are optimized to run well. Unless the chef sucks, most big name ROMS are optimized and more efficient.
I was running 1.2ghz for a while and whenever I'm playing Snes roms it would FC. After bumping it up to 1.72ghz it never did it again. Although 1.72ghz may be overkill for what I use my phone for but everything seems to be running extremely smooth.

I use conservative(810/192), super charger v6, ultra smooth rosie on 4.1.6. I haven't used benches, but they'll be low on this ROM since I'm assuming it's based on the Sense 3.5 leak for sensation.

[Q] Why overclock?

I observe that overclocking is now possible on the O3D. I have this phone myself and have acurateams brilliant ROM on it.
The user experience is fantastic and I do not have any speed issues at all, except my Class 2 SD Card (which NO rom will fix).
Why is it necessary to overclock this device?
the correct question is actually "why not?"
seriously though, there is no reason not to. more performance is more performance and the process of finding the fastest clock it can do is fun.

First time i played 9mm-Gameloft without any lag at all was after OC. So this is one of the reasons.
Overclocking is philosophy
Is the great fun with positive effects?

Its not "necessary" to overclock, unless you have a very specific need for more CPU power (eg emulators).
However if you are one of the people who likes to always get the most for their money, it just makes sense.
Plus it makes your phone more comparable to newer models which helps you "put up with it" for that bit longer before upgrading.
Bear in mind I have been in your position so many times. Thinking "oh its fast enough, I don't need to overclock" and then curiosity got the better of me. Then when you clock back down you immediately feel the difference in responsiveness.
Has your battery life been reduced by much since oc?
Sent from my LG-P920 using XDA App
With regular use of the phone, battery life is the same.
However with a lot of benchmarking, 3d gaming, videorecording and videoediting it will run out of juice faster...

OC is only for a bigger e-peen
Okay maybe you need this with crap lg software ;-)

[Q] Battery efficient rom+kernel?

hi
sorry for being such a nooby mcnooby-pants
but i just want to know which combination of roms and kernels will give me a great battery life and at the same time i want to be able to overclock to 1.5 GHz
i looked through the forums and i did all the basic stuff like
undervolting
setting profiles in setcpu
and removing all the bloatware from the phone
but everyone has a different combination and im really confused as to which combination to use
right now im using eaglesblood 2.3.7 with the dragon kernel and its really not working very well
so any and all help will be appreciated
thank you

My opinion:
1. Jump on a stock-based ROM with stock kernel and UC (underclock to 900-800 Mhz, you would be surprised you notice very little change in performance). Most stock-based ROM users report back great battery life.
2. Jump on a CM7 Nightly 199 or higher (Reports of great battery life, I can attest to this) with morfic or faux123's kernel (I prefer morfic's) which you can undervolt easily with Pimp My CPU (search XDA). I prefer it to SetCPU because the only profile I use is UC when the screen is off and with Tegra's DVFS CPU governor, it already does a good job of doing this. I also UC with this setup.
Delete Wi-Fi Calling (Kineto.apk) from your phone if you're not using it. I learned this from lotherius, it's always running in the background even when off and not in use. I was shocked to see the improvement.
I know it sounds stupid, but if you're in class or at work and don't need a barrage of updates on your phone, just turn off data. Most ROMs have a quick toggle setting to efficiently turn it on and off quickly and you'll be quite happy with how long it lasts. If you have to have data on or think it's moronic to have an Android phone that's not does not always have a data connection, battery drain is just the price that is payed.
woah.
Awesome answer
so do you think option 1 is better or 2?
does using cm decrease the battery efficiency?
if it does do you think the extra functionality in cm makes up for the batteryloss?
Thanks btw
Try miui 1.11.4 from whitehawkx with faux kernel cm-4.4

Good question, and I think that is totally up to you.
For example, my father and I both own G2x's, he runs a modified stock ROM (xboarder's ROM) and I run CM7. Without a doubt he gets better battery life than me, but at the cost of not having the features I have.
That may be a rough way of putting it but yes, using CM7 with all it's awesome features come with the price of not being as battery efficient.
The real question is if being less "battery efficient" actually means it's a bad thing. In my case it doesn't matter to me at all. Using the quick panel toggles in CM7, I only turn on data when I need it and I easily pull 15+ hours a charge because of it, assuming moderate usage.
Consider lotherius's tsugi rom, currently in version beta 3. It is my daily driver, stable, faster than 2.3.3 based roms, and excellent battery life. He has included a 2G toggle app that can automatically switch to 2g radio when screen is off to save lots of juice.

Best Kernel for Hellfie Phoenix 2.1

Well I'm in love with Hellfire Phoenix but I'm looking to extend my battery life to the fullest without affecting stability I do gaming and such but not too high graphical as to need a overclock or any of that.
I am currently testing the Trinity kernel that runs at 1100mhz I understand that its undervolted and still overclocked by 100mhz seems nice yes but battery still drains rather fast I mainly use it for internet browsing and that consumes a lot of battery.
I've been reading on how wifi calling pasively drains your battery just for it being there so I backed it up and uninstalled it with titanium backup.
I might say some dumb stuff or unreasonable or stuff like that .I am inexperienced at this I've been at this stuff for about 3-4 days since I realized G2X stock 2.3.3 is **** lol.

Im running the Trinity ELP kernel and it works fine for me. Battery is pretty good, I just realized I can't play games like PvZ, I don't know if its a kernel problem or an app problem because I flashed T15 and it still didn't work.

Just make a backup and try them all, there's really only a few.
also, don't be afraid to not use a custom kernel. in some situations your better off without one
