hey all,
i have not seen anything about this little app so i gigured i would mention it. its free and open source. i played with it a little while this morning and it has potential. the link for info and download of binaries and source, etc is
http://code.google.com/p/cdmaworkshoptool/
cheers,
disco

Thread moved

just in: cdmaDevTerm v2
thanks for the mention disco. thought about posting about devterm before but never really knew where or what to say(also didn't want to spam the boards)... but since you brought it up!
chromableedstudios is proud to announce a new release of cdmadevterm - a foss cdma service tool

@Disco what types if things would you like to see? there are quite a few features that are experimental if built from source and debugmode is enabled (such as efs and an adb tag)
this is free software so if the community gets involved(for example fixing the broken-ish scripts that are distributed with this version) it is more likely to become useful good software than if one-hungry-programmer-with student-loans-and-a day-job works on his off time for free
Edit: new versions my be obtained at http://code.google.com/p/cdmaworkshoptool/
current release is .2.85 and includes most previous features and a new more flexible python scripting system

Hi kernelpanic,
Your tool is cool.
I'm interested in developing a similar FOSS tool that is multiplatform (Linux, Windows, Mac, etc) and command-line. I decided to look into this because moving my Razr Maxx to PagePlus was not too hard... but I had to boot into Windows to use DFS. It got me wondering how hard it would be to develop a tool similar to yours but with different goals.
(I too wondered which forum to post in, this one that it was moved in doesn't seem appropriate either. Without google, I would have never found this post. I think their should be a programming tools discussion forum.)

Hi syserr,
Thanks for the interest in cdmaDevTerm(which has been quite the labor of love). I too had looked a few times at either making devTerm cross-platform or starting a new app that would be.
I mostly got discouraged at the lack of a good standardized way to interact with a serial port cross platform... Java mostly people recommend third-party libraries which almost universally have bad reviews.. mono(at least when I investigated) seemed almost as bad or worse than java...
"how hard it would be to develop a tool similar to yours" <-- i think the answer would probably vary a lot based on your level of programming skill and amount of time you can throw at the project.. it would take me much less time to re-implement from the ground up now(and would probably be cleaner), but that's mostly because I am a better developer after many years of hard work and several doing development as my day job
feel free to email me chromableedstudios if you get something going or have questions(on gmail)

OpenOBEX GUI - WE NEED DEVELOPERS

It been a couple of weeks since i started the Cyanogen Updater - which made it to market in less than 24 hours. It was on everybody's TODO list and it just took one thread being opened to get it done.
Lets try and pull off another miracle....
LETS GIVE ANDROID REAL OBEX SUPPORT
Thanks to the openOBEX guys we have a command line tool to do the job - but that ain't quite good enough.
The average user doesn't want to have to type - thats barbaric in this day and age (personally i love it, but i am a little bit weird)
We have something to build on - it is already integrated in to cyanogens roms
We have two real options - include the required tools or just make the gui access the tools - either way, it can be done.
Yes, there is already Bluex... But why should we pay for something that the phone should already have???
If you are with me - post here. If you want to be a coder, tester, art-guy or just support us with a few thanks this is where to do it

i will hellp you out a little bit with bugfiuxes and so but my primary thing is the updater
im fairly new to the whole android and dont know much but im willing to test. ive been testing CM roms since he started coming out with them.
This should be pretty simple, in theory anyway. All we technically have to do is have something that browses thru the filesystem (think SUFBS), and then when you click a file initiate the shell commands necessary or openobex. For recieving there could be a seperate tab at the bottom that when you switched to it it would open the socket to receive a file.
Art guy - reporting in!
Will lend my support whenever possible. As always, great to see more community oriented efforts like this. Once you guys get the app to a working point, I'll be happy to do some artwork for it like the CM Updater thread. Hopefully we can do this again fast.
great to have you on board again prash
i was hoping u n matt would find this thread
anyone who wants added to the google code administrator list - let me know and it shall be done
GOD bless you ALL!!
im sure when cyanogen sees this HE will bless us
im realloy glad to see another project, especially one as useful as this!
thanks....
all we need is some half-decent coders and we will be all set
it is theoretically very simple....but with time it will become more and more complex with extra features hopefully
Im going to jump right in and be THAT guy ... what is open obex?
OBEX=OBject EXchange=how protocol used when sending via bluetooth ot infrared
Open=open source=anyone can use the code with no copyright issues
OpenOBEX=2+2
This will be VERY interesting to follow, this is definately the only feature missing from android, and with prash doing graphics.... its gonna look good for sure (@ prash, using systemforce3... tried new dark hero, 3 hours later I was back to sf3... love the clock ) back on topic... if the knowledge of the coders here is anything to go by, I recon obex will be done by CM4.0.3

There is a aplication from the market called andrOBEX, and i think that app cover this.
Go to www.androbex.com and see if it is true, or try to work with the author to make it better.
If i'm wrong, count me in to help.
Does openobex support viewing directories and files which someone else is sharing and/or selecting your own directories for others to browse? I havent tried bluex but the description for that doesnt say whether it does or not, I dont know if that is based on openobex anyway though.
Would really like to see the development for this like the cyanogen updater, wish I could do something to help besides test.
i had no idea androbex existed - il look into it
this thread may be redundant....
Androbex doesn't appear to be able to receive files. Getting obexftp or something similar running shouldn't be hard. It just needs to be secure.

Collabertive Effort Community Update Application

Hi all,
I have a concept for a single update application that would be driven from the AndroidSPIN release database so all developers could use it for ROM, Themes, Applications and anything releases to devices.
If you wouldn't mind taking a couple of minutes to read this post, I would greatly appreciate it.
http://www.androidspin.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=260&t=226
I'd really love to get a group together to collaborate and either help design this and/or write an application and back end to do it.
Let me know what you think.
Thanks
Simon
Sounds like an awesome idea, I'd love to help any way I can, but I dont fit in any of the needed positions for the post. Looking forward to see what develops though
Fantastic idea!
I only ever use XDA so god knows what I'm missing out on elsewhere and to be honest after searching the word android on google and trawling through one crap site after another becomes tiresome so hence the 'XDA only' policy.
Sorry I can't offer any programming skills but you have my support on this project whole heartedly, not that it counts for much I know buh MeH!
Hope you can get this off the ground.
As I mentioned to Simon already, I was thinking about building an update application for my ROM. I love the idea of having an on-phone ROM database, update capability, something that can easily be used by any developer in the community.
Some initial thoughts on functionality:
- Browse ROMs
- Download ROMs to SD Card
- Monitor specific ROMs for updates
- Monitor currently running ROM for updates
I'm willing to lend a hand on the Android side of things, but this will be a large undertaking and we will also need some people to contribute to the UI, server side of things, etc.
I do iPhone UI design for applications now (I don't have an iPhone, but most of my contracts and clients are iPhone based), but let me know and I can whip up anything you guys need UI related.
Send me a PM and I can get the ball rolling on how the functionality can be laid out as well.
Even tho I know I wouldnt be able to help out with this. I know I would love to test this out if you needed it.
Its a great idea!!!
I know a teeny bit of Java, and I'm working on becoming an Android developer, so if anything needs doing on the Android side of things, I'm willing to contribute.
Although I may not know as much as some others, I'm definitely a fast learner. I have a few books on Android development I'm reading through right now.

Could be easily done, would require quite a lot of laborious work ripping out all the stuff you wouldn't need though.
I would take a look at this but unfortunately I have another Android project on at the moment which is taking all my development spare time.
@SimonNWalker What sort of backend having you got going? REST? SOAP?
Ups wrong theread
not that it matters (since i kept the source 100% open)....
you have my blessing to tear the cmupdater to shreds if it will give us a unified solution to all our ROM cravings
firefart has done a good job of keeping the code pretty clean so there shouldnt be too many issues with grabbing it
and the new code for the screenshots for themes could probably be used to the advantage of this project with ease
I'm not really interested in a rom updater, but a market replacement with an "upgrade all" feature (à la apt-get / yum) drawing from multiple repositories would be most exciting.
The Cyanogen updater could be used, it just needs some modifications. Stuff like sub-sections and update all
Would probably need a new method to keep track of the updates aswell, I don't think json would be sufficient for a lot of applications and updates. Unless somebody could make some kind of script to automate the process when it gets uploaded.

The only other method I would consider, besides JSON, is an advanced and well thought out web-based form that the developer is forced to complete upon uploading a ROM. This would place more burden on the server, but should be relatively easy to attach the provided ROM information to the rom database.
Think: Check boxes for firmware compatibilities, check boxes for device compatibilities, version number, change log, etc.
Maybe something a little like this?
Wow this would be/ is gonna be awsome!
I would suggest also that you can backup your sd card settings (and maybe also sms...) to an ftp server (or some other server you can install on your pc) from this app...
like (incremential) backup>partition>wipe>install update>boot>getbackupback
problem is to get the server adress back after wipe. maybe stored in web database and encrypted with phone imei number? or uploaded as google
whatever...
or just not wiping that single adress
just saying ^^

JSON is just a file format. The CM Updater works via a static JSON file that gets updated manually. The way I'd design this (which is what I asked a couple of posts back) is a dynamic web service (probably REST based) which delivered JSON dynamically. Wouldn't be too difficult at all.
As SimonWalker said he's using PHP + MySQL I'm guessing that's already being done.
@garok89: CM Updater is completely open-source therefore blessings are not needed to use the source. Really don't understand all the "credit" crap here on XDA.

I know it is open and I don't need to give my blessing for people to use the source. I did so because a lot of people don't feel comfortable using other peoples code without permission, regardless of whether or not its 100% open source.
And as for the 'credit crap'... I don't see you asking for your name to be removed from the 'about' section of the app
I am not asking for any credit
Anyway, lets not get off topic...
Guys, before this becomes Android Open Alliance, the sequel (you all remember how that went), I think we better set up a way to work together first and then toss in the speculative stuff later.
How about starting simple; set up a wave?

For android always java is best(according to the arcticles i read) so obviously JAVA
I know an app I would pay for is one that could control the video functions of a PS3 with my phone. I would think it is possible since the the PS3 remote uses bluetooth, but I'm not a developer so it might not be possible.
I don't know if you've done this already but google provides all the sdk material on their android developers site. They also give instructions on how to get started using the sdk. Pretty much everything seems to be built on java. Have fun!
Google provides almost all the tutorials and instructions you could ever need to begin developing.

yea you should start at http://developer.android.com/index.html if you know java you should be good to go after reading and doing the tutorials

->installed eclipse
->installed android sdk
->connected both eclipse and android sdk
-> now reading a book on how to develop android apps(in chapter 3 now)
All i need
-> some good friends(those who like to develop android apps, its okay if you are noobs)

HAHA...pretty much me too. Been debating about getting started for just over a year now. (Fireworks, Dreamweaver, Flash, Actionscript3, HTML, javascript, ~coldfusion, ~php, learning C#, can read VB, etc.)
Coming at this from a designing for training view. Been 15 yrs in technical training and looking to learn more. I got a few project ideas already and two things I really want...(which is what I am using for motivation)
As for the google tutorials...hello worlds really don't get you very far and I have looked out on web for other tuts. They all seem to have issues though...
Would appreciate feedback on the following....
-- This site/tut seems to 'assume' a whole lot and the program doesn't even work:
=== http://androidcore.com/android-programming-tutorials/182-fancy-listviews-part-one.html
(this one seems to not be showing any errors in SDK [it was first time, but not after restart] but it force closes in my emulator every time)
--This site/tut looked a bit more promising but is also has stuff that doesn't seem to work:
=== http://androidwizard.net/2010/05/create-a-context-menu-on-top-of-a-listview/
(no such thing as a OnPopulateContextMenuListener according to SDK and google site, switch(aItem.getId()) is not a supported method according to SDK, .getItem(menuInfo.position) cannot be resolved...all things a newb is at a loss to fix)
So...I am actually looking either for better tuts that get more in depth than hello world or someone from those sites that I can correspond with (as a trainer my OCD is really bothered by missing info in what look like the right kind of tut.)
Anyway...jenod...if you get some newbs together to work on stuff...I'd be interested.
Thanks for your feedback.. wil surely PM u if i get some(i mean developers)..
(why) does Android
Know what would be totally awesome? If someone like (why the lucky stiff) wrote something poigniant, beautiful and easy-to-follow to lead someone into Android app development! Something that reads almost like his Poigniant Guide to Ruby or like Chris Pine's Learn to Program.
Ya I have just started in android development. I have had many years of experience in all sorts of languages java, perl, python, c++, c#, and c. I also have a start on one project that would be great to have a group of people to work together with. I am very interested with this. Hope this works out, shoot me a PM if you want.

Hey idk if you all have seen this yet, but it is worth checking out. Google has a free software developing tool in beta at the site http:// appinventor .googlelabs .com
The beta requires an invite much like google voice but it looks to have some potential.

It will not be as powerful as straight coding. It is meant to allow people to make little apps for themselves. One review I read even indicated that inventor apps will not be allowed in market.
(This is all early speculation, but hey it is what I read today as I went ahead and submitted my info for an invite...LOL)
Coming from Macromedia/Adobe...this would be kind of like Captivate is to Flash is to Actionscript. This would be Captivate...simple but simple.
Hey this sounds like a great idea, hope everything works out. We need take over apples app market!

RChecker v.02 [test for proper root]

I have been thinking on starting developing applications for the Android Platform for a while, but never really had the chance to get a hold of sources to begin with. I was able to create my first android application and I thought sharing my findings in xda would only encourage me to work harder, and learn many more significant approaches to coding.
Anyways, I compiled my own root-checker or RChecker for short, and I though maybe some of you would like to try it out since the new 4.3 came out, and perhaps it works. I have only tested this app in 4.2.2 and still needs many more improvements to come, who knows, maybe I will create far more innovative apps. I'll share my findings and my link to sources.
Thanks to RootTools https://code.google.com/p/roottools/
and Stericson.
Don't be shy, test out my app and share your findings. Tell me if it works. PM any problems. Thank you.
Also, not granting super user permissions to the app will work.
Changelog:
v 0.1
First release.
v 0.2
More pleasant to the eye. Added "Override Failure!" for testing purposes only.
Still no display of commands

Nowhere Else to Turn

Hello everyone,
Im very new to this site, just registered a few moments ago. im not a bot, or a troll, so please bare with me if this post is in the incorrect place within the forum, or if some of my questions seem ignorant.... because i am sure they will (haha).
My development background:
0 ... i have none. Lol. In fact, ive barely begun to learn even the basics of source coding. So again, please bare with me on any of my ignorance.
Why I chose XDA forums:
Dealing with various issues on my Android device, i have googled my problems, and often-times found myself here to find the answers. I believe this forum has some of the highest intelligence this genre has to offer. Easily understandable advice put in a way the ignorant like myself can understand, goes a long way to helping others, and i believe i have found that here.
My Current issue:
I am tired of being an employee. I am tired of waking up and going to work to make someone elses dreams come true. At the age of 32 i believe its past the time i make steps to create something I can pass down to my sons. I have also noticed that the world of business has become vastly technological. Apps are needed for everything. So.... i want to know how to make apps. From the very beginning of it all, to the final production stages, and everything in between.
Where do i start?
Can i make one completely from my Android?
Where can i find app blueprints?
Do i need app blueprints?
These are just some examples of questions I have running through my head. I want to be an Andriloid game developer, I believe i could make the next big thing like AngryBirds, but i do not have the mental know-how, on the technological aspect on all of this. If any of you can help me it would be greatly appreciated. I am also open to the idea of a partnership in creating my first app.
Thank you very much for your time everyone.

Hi there, I'm a relatively recent beginner as well, having churned out only 1 app so far.
In terms of getting started from the ground up, I found the free online tutorial series from TheNewBoston pretty helpful. In particular, you'd want to look at the Java one and the Android Application Development one
Java
https://thenewboston.com/videos.php?cat=31
Android Development (may be using an outdated Android Studio by now, but overall still handy imo)
https://thenewboston.com/videos.php?cat=6
You need to do the Java one first, because you'll be writing Java code to make Android apps.
There are quite a bit of videos, especially for the Android one. You can pick and choose which you need based on the app you have in mind, like if you don't need voice recognition or drawing 3D objects, you can just skip over those.
Good luck!

Brother youre a life saver. These tutorials are awesome for beginners like me. Funny its called "NewBoston" as thats where i live too lol. But again, thanks for this.
Everything starts with Ideation. All mobile app developers follow the design guidelines during the design phase. The best method would be to make your first app relatively simple and to focus on creating something. Next step would be deciding on the wireframe for the app. Choose the IDE (everything needed to develop your apps), programming language and set it. Since you are using Android Studio and Java, you should know the basics of Java. Create and acquire images, build the layout and write the code. Add more functionality specific to your app and do extra polishing by running your app on different devices. Finally, publish your app. Check this article on how to make android app development easy https://www.fingent.com/blog/how-to-make-android-app-development-easy .
