Battery drain while phone is off - Galaxy 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Since I flashed Kyrillos' ROM v10 Beta and after ICS build 3, I didn't notice this problem, but now if I shut down and leave the phone off for hours (ex. in the night) my battery drains and even goes to 0% !!!
I also made screenshots for better explaining...
Is anybody else facing the same problem?
Any ways for solving it? Or is my battery fault?
Thanks for the advices

take a look at this thread, the first couple of pages should get you started on solving this

I have a similar issue,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22598720#post22598720
I changed my battery and it still persists. So far I have not found a way to fix. However I got the phone this way, so I am not sure if any particular ROM was flashed to cause this or if its a hardware problem. If I find any solutions I will be sure to let you know.
If you find any please be sure to post it up as well so I can try it out.
Thanks

You mean just kernel or the complete ROM with which kernel?
Cause I think it's most probably a kernel issue.
I tried to use app linked on first answer but I can only see stats and I can't determine where the problem is...
It shows wakelocks when phone is on, but not when it's off so what?
I don't like change every day a new ROM or charge so often battery without using it, so I'll try Kyrillos 9.5 again and if it will solve my problem then maybe is too soon for CM7 or ICS on this phone.
Stay together and maybe we can find a solution.

hold on, you mean the battery drains when you power off the phone??? or when the SCREEN is off?

I mean power off, not only screen off, but also in that case I can't explain why battery drains in ~20 hours using it or even letting it on standby (I'm sure no 3g, GPS, wifi, Bt or background apps are on).
Why?
Anyway I'll give pure CM7 a try...

about the drain when screen is off use the app on that thread and determine which apps cause wakelocks and either remove them or change their settings (that's what i see on the screenies you attached). also keep in mind that kernels are responsible for about 80% of battery usage, so try out a different kernel too
however if there is drain when the power is off then there is something seriously wrong on your hardware. i suggest you take the battery out and leave it be for a few hours, then put it on again and see if it drained at all. If it did then replace your battery, if not then you probably need to take your to a service center

You confirmed what I thought...
Vertical gap you can see on my attachments happened while phone was off, so it's surely a kernel issue, but if I'm the only one who had this problem, maybe it's also a battery problem?
So, unlike what I said before, I'm gonna turn back to froyo (I think Kyrillos 9.5) after your adv of letting battery out of the phone for some hours, to see if I can return to 2-3 days of use without charging.
I'll post news when I'll get answers from my phone, anyway thank you for helping me understand.

Definitively, that was a kernel issue!
Now battery lasts less than 2 days, but even with CM7 from marcellusbe, I haven't battery drain while phone is off.
My phone/battery is 16 months older, so I'm feeling quite lucky having this battery life.
Good luck to all other Galaxy 3 users and thank again for the help and fabulous support here in xda!

Which kernel am I running?

Hey all, quick question hopefully you all can help me out with. I am currently having terrible battery issues ever since I flashed my phone initially. Terrible as in 6 hours stand-by my phone would be dead.
Anyhow, I am just trying to figure out who's (which) kernel I am running. The kernel version is 2.6.35.7-I997RUXKG3-CL366622 . I have done searches but biggest problem is, threads usually do not post the version number for me to check what I am running.
I am on Infused 2.1.0 (thx GTG!), but battery life has been garbage on all ROMs so I am certain that is not the issue. Can anyone let me know, me love you long time.

Maybe u just have a bad battery 6 hours is horrible off stand by.
unless you have some other things running thats eating it up. when you check your battery stats whats eating the most power. Display? Android Proccess?
check that out.

Problem is I bought 2 extra batteries and get exact same life. When I initially bought the phone I would get a days use surprisingly. After that, I have had nothing but god awful drain. I have had almost a dozen android phones and have never encountered such terrible battery life.
I do not have fetch data enabled/gps/widget updates or anything that would normally keep the processor/data churning while in my pocket. Battery use is usually around 40-80% on display, all other categories being minimal (which seems correct).
I'm banging my head on this one, I appreciate you guys replying to my thread

Can't post outside links since I'm newer, sent PM with screen capture
1% per 3 hours standby is FREAKING AWESOME..!!!!
Maybe u have some stray app in the background that's using CPU/whatever it is that's eating up ur battery.
Some subtle things u cud try since u said display is taking up 40-80% of battery:
1. Turning off screen auto rotation, turning it on when needed
2. Turning off auto brightness, turning it on to auto when needed
Use SetCPU like people above pointed out and this would let u see what processor states ur phone is spending most time in.
It sounds like for some people, Infusion 1.1 really flakes out. No clue why. I don't overclock so I don't run it.
It's either Infusion 1.1 flaked out, or if you continue having problems with other kernels, you have a rogue app.
Kernels rarely make any significant difference in battery life unless they're broken.

Running Infusion-GB 1.1 and Infused 2.1.0: I get 1% drain every 3 hours on standby with radio on (reasonable H+ reception) and 1% every 6 hours on flight mode.
It's most likely a defect in your phone or a configuration issue. You really have to be using your phone for at least 4 or 5 hours (screen-on time) over those 6 hours to cut through battery that fast.

when you go to settings > applications > running services - is there anything there that looks like it shouldn't be there?
i know that there is a process that starts with an "o" that is tied into media hub's protected content (DRM) - eats a ton of battery, and isn't really necessary.
it's also possible that you have the SNS service going, but constantly in a restarting state. this seemed to eat a lot of battery also.
otherwise, i'd do what others have suggested and monitor with CPU spy, and i'd also suggest an app called Better Battery Stats (not available in the market - find it here on XDA by a developer named chamonix). this will let you know if you have any wakelocks that are preventing your phone from reaching deep sleep when it is idle.
definitely sounds like you could have a wakelock or 2 interfering with your phone trying to get into those lower frequencies.
wipe battery stats?
Did you try wiping battery stats?

Packets in/out isn't what you want unless you also have unusual data usage too. It's wakelock stats you want - look at the BetterBatteryStats app. It used to be only on XDA but apparently it's on the market now.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again - Wiping battery stats does NOTHING on our phone. Don't go blindly telling people to do something on our devices just because it worked on another device. The fuel gauge chip on GalaxyS series phones works in a very different way than HTC phones. (Exception: I think the GSII has a more traditional fuel gauge.)

[Q] Battery Life w/ BM ICSv5 and Franco Kernel is GARBAGE!

Please read this before you go crazy on me saying I haven't searched for this because I have. I've updated from every ROM of ICS thats dropped after reading up on them and the fastest and best working everyday ROM for ICS is BrainMaster's ICSv5 with Franco's Kernel 11/25. I haven't tried 11/26 but I've read the colors are much better on 25 and I believe it because its the best my screen has ever looked. SHARP!
So here's my issue. I want this as an everyday user, and I'm sure it can be. I just need to know how to set up the battery so that it lasts longer. I just restarted my phone and cleared all the battery info. Before I unplugged it at 6:30pm EST I had 91%. After very, very minor use (looked up the number for Home Depot and downloaded Amazon Market) I got back home at 9:30 and my battery was at 39%. Thats 60% in 3 hours. Thats terrible. How can I adjust the batter life? Can I use NSTools to do so or do I need to change code? I don't want to change the kernel completely because the colors truly are AMAZING with this version.
Please let me know, and thank you in advance!
Best regards,
Tula
Well, which app or function specifically is causing the drain? Did you look at the battery usage? Were you in an area with poor signal reception?
Before you trash a rom and kernel with a poorly conceived thread, try troubleshooting the problem.

For what it's worth, the only time I've gotten that kind of battery life is when a NFC process decided to start and run nonstop. No idea why it was running (particularly since I don't have Wallet configured), but since then I keep NFC disabled.
When that happened it was similar battery life - lost about 70% in 3 1/2 hours.
I never once trashed the ROM or the kernel? What are you talking about? Before reading into something for more than what it is you should take it for what it is. I don't know what the problem is, everyone else seems to be having a great amount of battery life. I'm asking on here, in this forum, because I figured someone (maybe a programmer who knows these things) can tell me how to "properly" config it. Idk what the deal is with it but I was looking for insight. I love the ROM and the kernel and I do believe I stated in the post that I wanted to keep it as a daily user. SO, either you can help me and teach me how to fix the problem or teach me to give you what info you need or do me a favor and don't waste my time. I'm looking for answers or suggestions. Not accusations and negativity.
"Poorly concieved thread!" Whats "poorly conceived" about it? The fact that I reached out on a FORUM and asked for HELP? Go comment on somebody else with that bullsh*t.
Reread your thread title; calling something "garbage" is not trashing it?
Reread and answer the questions asked in post #2. Nobody can do anything to help if you don't provide basic information or perform rudimentary problem-solving procedure.

Well man what i did with mine was calibrated the battery which means charge the battery completely then boot into recovery wipe battery stats then unplug and reboot then use it for 5 mins then charge fully again then unplug and drain completely till it shuts off on its own then fully charge again and it should be calibrated.. sounds like alot.. i kno lol but trust me it works and then if ur battery life doesnt extend after that (which it should) then i would look at what it is thats using the most matter (menu>settings>battery and go from there.. also make sure u have all the apps that will allow u to move to sd moved there it keeps them from running in the background and also make sure ur screen brightness is set low.. i took my auto brightness off and just turned it down just bright enough to see.. i know the colors looks fly like a bag of skittles when u got the brightness up wit franco kernel but it kills battery lol. hopefully that works for u pimpin and sorry for the novel lol just wanted to give u a few options to try.

As far as the battery, I followed your instructions JG and also I started from the beginning and deleted all installs and reset to factory. I then installed each ROM from v1 all the way up and now EVERYTHING works and I got almost 2 hours out of my phone today and used 9%! WHOOHOOO!

I had this problem too, but in my case it was the Google Wallet app. It drained the my battery in like 4 hours. After uninstalling it, all went back to normal.
Now if you said battery life on a rom kernel combo was FANTASTIC.
What would that imply? Thanks guys etc.
You go through all the trouble to make the thread but not spend a couple seconds to check what actually used up the battery.

You need to install a better app. The Android built in power usage thing is about as much use as a chocolate teapot, and better battery stats isn't much better.
Try system panel from Play, you will need the paid version from here. Put it in monitoring mode and leave it for a few hours.
You will be able to see what is chewing CPU then, and that is invariably the thing that is causing the drain. It very rarely fails to assist me with diagnosis of an obscure drain issue.
Ok..just bought system panel app.will update about this crazy battery drain later..

Cool, it's well worth the couple of dollars.
I've used it pretty much constantly in monitoring mode since they were in beta when I had my desire. So, probably not far off a couple of years usage with me.
It doesn't eat battery either, because it polls when the device wakes up for another reason.
And the thing which really makes it good for me, it records usage of the system tasks, such as kernel threads, which can be massively handy in diagnosing an issue.
Solved by flashing latest adamG ROM..

kernel question

i have a quick kernel question, i have cm9 rom installed and i did some searching and found that changing the kernel could help with battery drain, so im needing 2 know if this actualy helps. with cm9s kernel my phone only lasted abt 6hrs from doing nothing but txting (i have no apps on my phone except batteryxl/2xbattery. im not using the pro ver as i do not buy apps, so my wifi is constantly turned on even after i shut it off manualy and turn data on), i flashed the team faq kernel and still see abt the same, if changing the kernel does help with battery life, what kernel would be the best 2 use? and if possible could you link me to it. i have searched the sgs4g section for kernels but havnt found many in the development forums.
(if a question like mine was asked/answered b4 i am sry 4 reposting, as i am still trying to figure the best setup 4 my phone that will last atleast a full day or longer from just txting)

Atm there aren't any ICS kernels besides those two. You can try to under clock to 600 or 800 MHz to get a little more screen on time. Its either that or go to a GB rom with known good battery life
First off, have you read some of the other threads on battery life and ICS?
Second, what do those battery apps actually do? They may be doing more harm than good. BetterBatteryStats will provide insight into why your phone might be draining so quickly.
Third, turn off the WiFi! Not clear why you have it on if you're only texting.
Sounds to me that if it isn't one of those, it's new-shiny-toy syndrome, or cruft from flashing (if you believe in gremlins)

I can't shake the Android OS from draining my battery.

I've had this problem once before and it was simply as easy as switching my kernel. You can see here.
Now I've tried GR to CM9 and then to Codename Android Build 4 still had the problem changed Kernels.. Then decided to GR to CM9 and try Beam, and yet again still had Android OS draining the battery. I then flashed the Hefe kernel and NO change.. I've looked around on forums and remember seeing someone mention strange battery stats I can't find it at the moment, but if you look at my stats below you can see that not only is the Android OS draining the battery the graph shows huge drop off points. What exactly are those? Thanks in advance for any help!

That looks like you need a new battery. A couple weeks ago I had the same problem. My usage looked the same as yours where there were sudden drops in the battery percentage. I suspect you have the same problem.

Try or buy Better Battery Stats. There really isn't anything that compares, either for features or support.
Posted from my SGS4G, thanks to Team Acid development
Have you tried clearing cache, clearing dalvik cache, then fixing permissions, rebooting and waiting at least ten minutes after reboot? That is what always fixed my "Android OS problem"

Yeah I've tried it all, and now I have replaced my battery and still getting the random huge battery drop offs. Tonight I'm going to GR to CM9 and then to codename and not restoring my apps

I started on stock GB, went to the 1 click stock with root and CW, to CM9, to Remi's ICS. This is what my battery looks like
@getochkn
Yeah, but you were sleeping or doing nothing, phone was idle. LOL Seriously, how is that possible? I have tried many ROMs, today I had a big issue on CM9, battery dropped from 60's% to 1% when phone got stuck and shut down. I had an emergency and needed my phone to call and couldn't. I got very pissed off and now I'm on GB because that battery drain issue has been all over ICS. I have tried calibrating, GR's, I use less apps... nothing! Phone lasted like 4-6 hours with average use. I needed to charge it like 3 times per day. It made my mobile phone, not so mobile.
Not complaining. Just a real issue. I know there are bugs and that development is ongoing. I love ICS but just can't afford to loss so much battery again in another emergency case scenario.
I would be happy to get 12 hours of use. I remember with Redux 1.2 (GB) I got 18-25 hours depending on use. Share some of your usage. I may need to buy a new battery.

Music for about an hour, wifi on most of the time, airdroid'ed into it, messing around with settings, took about a dozen pics.
