I can't shake the Android OS from draining my battery. - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

I've had this problem once before and it was simply as easy as switching my kernel. You can see here.
Now I've tried GR to CM9 and then to Codename Android Build 4 still had the problem changed Kernels.. Then decided to GR to CM9 and try Beam, and yet again still had Android OS draining the battery. I then flashed the Hefe kernel and NO change.. I've looked around on forums and remember seeing someone mention strange battery stats I can't find it at the moment, but if you look at my stats below you can see that not only is the Android OS draining the battery the graph shows huge drop off points. What exactly are those? Thanks in advance for any help!

That looks like you need a new battery. A couple weeks ago I had the same problem. My usage looked the same as yours where there were sudden drops in the battery percentage. I suspect you have the same problem.

Try or buy Better Battery Stats. There really isn't anything that compares, either for features or support.

Have you tried clearing cache, clearing dalvik cache, then fixing permissions, rebooting and waiting at least ten minutes after reboot? That is what always fixed my "Android OS problem"

Yeah I've tried it all, and now I have replaced my battery and still getting the random huge battery drop offs. Tonight I'm going to GR to CM9 and then to codename and not restoring my apps

I started on stock GB, went to the 1 click stock with root and CW, to CM9, to Remi's ICS. This is what my battery looks like

@getochkn
Yeah, but you were sleeping or doing nothing, phone was idle. LOL Seriously, how is that possible? I have tried many ROMs, today I had a big issue on CM9, battery dropped from 60's% to 1% when phone got stuck and shut down. I had an emergency and needed my phone to call and couldn't. I got very pissed off and now I'm on GB because that battery drain issue has been all over ICS. I have tried calibrating, GR's, I use less apps... nothing! Phone lasted like 4-6 hours with average use. I needed to charge it like 3 times per day. It made my mobile phone, not so mobile.
Not complaining. Just a real issue. I know there are bugs and that development is ongoing. I love ICS but just can't afford to loss so much battery again in another emergency case scenario.
I would be happy to get 12 hours of use. I remember with Redux 1.2 (GB) I got 18-25 hours depending on use. Share some of your usage. I may need to buy a new battery.

[Q] Kernel Help

Right now I'm running H57 with JT's 4/15 voodoo kernel. For the past few weeks my battery life has been miserable. I've tried several different Kernels, wiping, data, cache, dalvick cache, and battery stats. Ever since the bad battery life, I've noticed that the Android OS is consuming much larger battery percents than it used to 30-50%. It used to stay around 5% or less. Also I been using CPU spy for a couple weeks. My CPU seems to spend almost all of its time at 800 Mhz for some reason. It will not power down to 100 Mhz even if I turn it on and leave it in my pocket for a few hours. Today i've burned 80% of my battery in 5 hrs while it sat in my pocket during an exam. Any advice on what I can do or check to see what exactly the problem is?
Im not quite sure what the issue could be but I can suggest a program called osmonitor that might help you narrow down what rogue process is eating away. i recently just upgraded from 2.1 to 2.2 as well. I am running JTs 4.15 voodoo kernel. My battery seems about the same so far as 2.1, maybe something with H57 ?
Yeah, I can try another rom. It was happening prior to H57 though. I've been on 2.2 for a while now. 2.2 was running great at first. It happened while on PNP. At first it was amazing on battery. I don't remember changing anything specific to ruin my battery life. To the best of my knowledge it occurred after flashing OTB on PNP. I'll download osmonitor and see what i can find. Thanks.
I'm pretty much stock / rooted w voodoo and about same as eclair check the misc section in osmonitor for cpu scaling

That is likely why your battery life sucks. The phones is constantly trying to find a better signal. Also, USCC doesn't always enforce this but they do have a clause in the contract that they can shut down your line for using it more than 50% of the time outside of their network. Just something to keep in mind.
Yeah, I've heard that, but I've had uscc up here for 3 years now. It used to be fine up here. I've had it in raleigh for 6 months and it just start acting up about 2 or 3 weeks ago.

I'm going to be in uscc service for about 3 weeks here. I'll see if it makes a difference.

And the answer is no. I charged the phone over night. Left to fish at 5:30 this morning. Unplugged the phone and turned it on when I left, turned off tasker just to be sure that wasn't causing the issue, and left the phone on the table at home. Back at 3:30, phone at 35% not even using it. I can't find anything using osmonitor. When I look at it, osmonotor is usually using the largest amount of resources.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
And in 30 minutes it has dropped another 10%.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Battery life is not something people can fix for you, there are too many factors that affect it, u just need to troubleshoot. I've had various results with different roms but typically it is your usage and the apps on your phone that are culprit
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA Premium App
I completely understand that. That's why I spent a couple weeks troubleshooting to try and find out what the problem was. Like I said I can leave the phone on all day and never use it and the battery still sucks, so It's not usage. I can not find any apps that are consuming much battery. The only thing I changed between good battery and bad is from JT's voodoo kernel to OTB. Android OS and System began to use 60% of the battery and a 5 minute phone call will burn 5-10 %. I said that sucks, switched back to JT's kernel problem still persists trying different roms and kernels. That's why I posted this to see if something could have been messed up when flashing to OTB.

Which kernel am I running?

Hey all, quick question hopefully you all can help me out with. I am currently having terrible battery issues ever since I flashed my phone initially. Terrible as in 6 hours stand-by my phone would be dead.
Anyhow, I am just trying to figure out who's (which) kernel I am running. The kernel version is 2.6.35.7-I997RUXKG3-CL366622 . I have done searches but biggest problem is, threads usually do not post the version number for me to check what I am running.
I am on Infused 2.1.0 (thx GTG!), but battery life has been garbage on all ROMs so I am certain that is not the issue. Can anyone let me know, me love you long time.

Problem is I bought 2 extra batteries and get exact same life. When I initially bought the phone I would get a days use surprisingly. After that, I have had nothing but god awful drain. I have had almost a dozen android phones and have never encountered such terrible battery life.
I do not have fetch data enabled/gps/widget updates or anything that would normally keep the processor/data churning while in my pocket. Battery use is usually around 40-80% on display, all other categories being minimal (which seems correct).
I'm banging my head on this one, I appreciate you guys replying to my thread

1% per 3 hours standby is FREAKING AWESOME..!!!!
Maybe u have some stray app in the background that's using CPU/whatever it is that's eating up ur battery.
Some subtle things u cud try since u said display is taking up 40-80% of battery:
1. Turning off screen auto rotation, turning it on when needed
2. Turning off auto brightness, turning it on to auto when needed
Use SetCPU like people above pointed out and this would let u see what processor states ur phone is spending most time in.
It sounds like for some people, Infusion 1.1 really flakes out. No clue why. I don't overclock so I don't run it.
It's either Infusion 1.1 flaked out, or if you continue having problems with other kernels, you have a rogue app.
Kernels rarely make any significant difference in battery life unless they're broken.

Running Infusion-GB 1.1 and Infused 2.1.0: I get 1% drain every 3 hours on standby with radio on (reasonable H+ reception) and 1% every 6 hours on flight mode.
It's most likely a defect in your phone or a configuration issue. You really have to be using your phone for at least 4 or 5 hours (screen-on time) over those 6 hours to cut through battery that fast.

when you go to settings > applications > running services - is there anything there that looks like it shouldn't be there?
i know that there is a process that starts with an "o" that is tied into media hub's protected content (DRM) - eats a ton of battery, and isn't really necessary.
it's also possible that you have the SNS service going, but constantly in a restarting state. this seemed to eat a lot of battery also.
otherwise, i'd do what others have suggested and monitor with CPU spy, and i'd also suggest an app called Better Battery Stats (not available in the market - find it here on XDA by a developer named chamonix). this will let you know if you have any wakelocks that are preventing your phone from reaching deep sleep when it is idle.
definitely sounds like you could have a wakelock or 2 interfering with your phone trying to get into those lower frequencies.

Packets in/out isn't what you want unless you also have unusual data usage too. It's wakelock stats you want - look at the BetterBatteryStats app. It used to be only on XDA but apparently it's on the market now.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again - Wiping battery stats does NOTHING on our phone. Don't go blindly telling people to do something on our devices just because it worked on another device. The fuel gauge chip on GalaxyS series phones works in a very different way than HTC phones. (Exception: I think the GSII has a more traditional fuel gauge.)

4.0.4 heavy battery drain

Hi,
Has anyone else had problems with the battery draining with the new 4.0.4 ? My GF Nexus S was still on 2.3.6 so I got the factory version of 4.0.4 and installed it. I obviously wiped the data/cache/etc. Also I rooted it with the latest superuser.
I'm running the latest nighly of CM9 and everything is perfect, so I thought it was time to give her the sweetness of ICS.
So with all that useless information, has anyone found a fix for the battery drain in 4.0.4?
Thank you,
WarpedMonkeys
Since I installed 4.0.4 my battery lasts up to 20 hours, no problem at all.
I'd suggest manual full wipe with fresh 4.0.3 stock rom and then manual ota update to 4.0.4.
I'm also using matr1x kernel, it's just awesome
Hope it helps

Stock rom is ok, but updating with ota from 2.3.6 to 4.0.4 may lead to bad battery behaviour. Someone says that battery stats wipe could lead to better battery performances, but I think fresh install could do the trick

Hello,
my Nexus S was updated automatically to version 4.0.4. I will tell you. My problem is with data. Now I can not open any WWW page in default viewer,Opera sometimes opens some pages but quite rare. I can not get any email in K9 Mail. Update of Google maps took several hours, unfinished, eaten all my battery! Sometimes I am without signal or with bad signal.
It is for sure problem with 4.0.4 because I have unlimited data. So, no FUP in this case.
I was satisfied with 2.3.6. How can I do downgrade without rooting etc. my phone ?

i have a quick kernel question, i have cm9 rom installed and i did some searching and found that changing the kernel could help with battery drain, so im needing 2 know if this actualy helps. with cm9s kernel my phone only lasted abt 6hrs from doing nothing but txting (i have no apps on my phone except batteryxl/2xbattery. im not using the pro ver as i do not buy apps, so my wifi is constantly turned on even after i shut it off manualy and turn data on), i flashed the team faq kernel and still see abt the same, if changing the kernel does help with battery life, what kernel would be the best 2 use? and if possible could you link me to it. i have searched the sgs4g section for kernels but havnt found many in the development forums.

Atm there aren't any ICS kernels besides those two. You can try to under clock to 600 or 800 MHz to get a little more screen on time. Its either that or go to a GB rom with known good battery life
First off, have you read some of the other threads on battery life and ICS?
Second, what do those battery apps actually do? They may be doing more harm than good. BetterBatteryStats will provide insight into why your phone might be draining so quickly.
Third, turn off the WiFi! Not clear why you have it on if you're only texting.
Sounds to me that if it isn't one of those, it's new-shiny-toy syndrome, or cruft from flashing (if you believe in gremlins)

[Q] Memory leak, battery problems, and screen issues.

First, my phone has a memory leak. Like, after using it for a while, even an hour or two, the available memory will go to 0. I have tried ending all apps that could be suspect, but all of the memory being used that is reported by the settings is much less than what is necessary for there to be <10MB of available memory. I even try to end as many programs as I can, but this eventually happens after some usage. Before you ask, no, I am not using task-killers, and I only notice this and end apps when whatever is leaking is starting. The phone will not effectively end enough applications to free the space. Almost every app will say "restarting" on the "running" page, and none will be seen on the "cached" page. It will result in the phone locking up and rebooting. Also, this happens during high CPU usage (might be a memory issue though), like while updating apps.
Second, my battery life since the OTA has dropped significantly. Now, I am lucky if I get 6-8 hours of battery life while occasionally using the phone and listening to music a lot. The screen seems to be taking most of the power (~65%), and the brightness is regulated by JuiceDefender. I have tried to automatically set it without JD, and it was worse in battery life. It is on much less than the wifi, yet is somehow taking up far more battery. Second place is the Android OS/System/Mediaserver combined (~20%), for whatever reason. I have tried using the Battery Calibration application multiple times and it has not helped. Disabling JD makes battery issues worse. I have looked for wakelocks, but besides the charger, I found none that looked suspicious/non-OS related. See attached file for battery info.
Third, for some reason, the dead pixels came back? Now, it looked like at first there was a shape of a butterfly in spotted dead pixels. Most of those localizations disappeared (or, the "dead" pixels came back to "life"), but a few grew, and now I have somewhere over 100 dead pixels. A few of those have shrunk, but it is still an eyesore. I can provide pictures if it will help. I'm not sure why it is doing this.
Note: all of these issues have started since the ICS OTA. I reflashed the stock OS before doing the OTA.
Any help would be greatly appreciated for any of these!

Yeah mine is like that or worse if I have wifi/screen on as much as you do.
The drain is pretty steady even with minimal usage
Any ideas on what could be causing this?

try FXZ stock ICS
freeze all unneccessary apps ...
dont install any other extra apps (downloadin from market)
try to keep minimum apps..
stay as much on 2G/Wi-Fi
ur battery should last for atleast more than 18 hrs for moderate use (else it will drain dependin on how heavy u use)
if this doesn't work then u'll need expert advice
& remember you'll get rarely above 24 hrs (usage matters a lot)
correct me if m wrong ...
I am also facing the same issues. I have the latest STOCK ICS.
Huge memory leak! Launcher has to restart on every unlock barely 20-7 mbs free!! and battery also drains pretty fast, although not when in sleep.
try "fast reboot"
it will clear some memory
