Hi,
I've posted about this in various places looking for hints, but now I have a specific request. Might be a tall order, but can anyone in Calgary with a Sensation do a Speedtest.net app and report their ping and down speed so I can compare and find out if I need to dig further into my issue? Ideally a couple with ROM/radios flashed, and a couple with stock Sensations.
The Issue:
I'm in Calgary on Bell Mobility, with Sensation 4G, and trying hard to troubleshoot an issue. I remember when I did a Speedtest.net 2 months ago with new phone, everything seemed normal, normal ping to different servers, and good speeds. I didnt think of writing it down at the time, because it seemed normal.
I recently rooted, superCID, firmware, etc to Android Revolution 6.2.1. I have tried both XE and non-XE versions, and tried both using the T-mobile 4G option (having both 11.68.3504.00P_11.21.3504.13_2 or 11.68.3504.00U_11.21.3504.13_2 radios). From what I read, the "P" may stand for HSPA+, which is what I want, and the "U" may stand for HSDPA). I have also tried flashing the stock radio and RIL, while still on 6.2.1.
Whenever I do Speedtest.net app, I get 350ms+ ping to any server, Calgary, Vancouver, Seattle, Brooks AB, etc. And my downspeeds are anywhere from 0.5 Mbps to 2 Mbps. I have a friend in Calgary with a Bell iPhone and he hits 35 ms ping and 5.5 Mbps. I really think the ping is messing my speeds up. Browsing seems horrendous sometimes, and the signal icon constantly switches from H to 3G, when it never used to do that.
Thanks a bunch!
FYI if anyone cares...
This problem persisted for well over a month, over various reinstallations of firmwares/roms. I even had ICS Android Revolution running with, using stock radio versions from Bell. Same 350+ ping issues on speed tests, and very low speed ratings on any server I chose.
Last week I said F-it and flashed stock Bell Canada RUU. All problems solved, 30-50 ping, fast speed ratings, etc.
Going to try going back to ICS just for fun (really because anything else just sucks!)
But clearly there is a problem with ICS or Android Revolution. Which I will also post this in that thread, just figured I'd update this one incase anyone else finds the same problem and happens upon this thread.

New to this stuff, but have managed to fumble through getting phone rooted, flashed and functional... to a degree.
I have a HTC EVO on the Sprint network.
Android 2.3.3
Cyangen Kernel 2.6.37.4
Mod ver. 7.0.3.1
Baseband 2.15.00.04.08
So with everything up to date as far as i know I am stuck with a '1x' for a signal.
My mom has the exact same phone except its not rooted. Stock everything and shes getting a 3g signal when shes in town.
So Im stuck here. Anyone have a clue?
Im fairly new here and by no means a dev but i believe its because you have cyanogen its telling you the actual speed you have. while the stock evo only says 3G but is really only on 1x. try running speedtest on both devices.
-also please correct me if im wrong, read this somewhere and am currently experiencing it aswell
thanks ocruz301
Can anyone else chime in and verify this?
try re-configuring your roaming capabilities. Your issue is unlikely to do with CM7.
I have looked through the roaming menu and i dont see anything that looks incorrect.
Is there anything in particular i should be looking for?
Speedtest.net results:
average from several different locations.. 15kB
around the same for uploads..
600ish latency
I have travelled a little over 500 miles around Tennessee Arkansas and Mississippi and Im getting the same thing everywhere..
Anyone?.. anyone?
So these are the steps i have taken thus far:
-updated to latest cm7
-updated to latest radio
no go
flashed to stock rom and updated prl
ran speed test.. 15kB up/down.. EVEN THOUGH it SAYS 3g
flashed back to cm7
speed test.. 15kB
Does no one else have a freakin' EVO that can just chime in and let me know im the only asshole with this issue?
I have a somewhat same problem. My phone would drop to 1x every 10 to 20 minutes and stay there for a few minutes then go back to 3g. It does this throughout the day. Luckily I have 4G in most of my area and that helps me to avoid using 3g. The moment I turn off 4g it starts doing it again. It started a few weeks ago and I don't know what caused it. Like you have have tried different Roms and Radios but no help. I'll gonna try to unroot and go back to Sprint Rom and see it that helps.
hmmmm
I run king cocoa II rom and I thnk its the absolute best ive seen but its also froyo not gingerbread
Anyone, I am having the same issue, no matter which ROM I flashed, and whic kernel PRI or PRL I used, my speed is only 128K max with 1x icon
When I'm browsing the web, about every 10 minutes or so, my 4G connection stalls. I still have 3-4 bars lit up green but there is no activity showing in the arrows. It comes back after about 30 seconds to a minute later. It's extremely annoying. Is anyone else seeing this? Could this be a problem with my SIM card?
I'm running CM7 with the latest radios but I'm about to revert back to stock GB to see if it happens there.
I constantly had issues with CM7 and data. It would do exactly as you described. I ended up changing to MIUI and have never been happier. I havent had weird drop outs of data.
its been a complaint will all of verizon's lte devices. Guess it comes with the new tech. Hopefully it will get better over time.
I've had the issue with any and all roms this last 2 months + in specific locations. Mind you, these aren't fringe coverage areas or anything, either. When at home I'm constantly stalling but usually at work all good (1 mile away).

Bad Radios I say
Everything past:
From the 2.10.605.1 RUU:
CDMA: 1.48.00.0726
md5: 704404fd7a7bd0958936a32527c06172
LTE: 0.01.78.0802
md5: d77c7fee8bb598c20d5d37f4a2e28d48
Is rubbish.
Although I prefer gingerbread interface I ran into all sorts of data dropping and LTE issues. It's not Verizon towers. Rather garbage radios and roms. As soon as I fell back to 2.10.605.1 and used these radios, everything is back to normal. Speeds are far better.
I noticed just after the gingerbread updates all of these threads on rootzwiki and here in regards to similar issues. Everyone saying stuff such as replace the SIM, call up Verizon etc. I just went back to Froyo and that is where I will stay.
i've been having the issue where i'd click on a link on a webpage(regardless of browser) and occasionally it won't appear to be doing anything.. and i'll click another 1 - 2 times before it's magically appeared(fully loaded) on the next page.

Running CM7.1.1,
I had 906w_1 and 906w_2 radios from 2.11.605.3...
Had the same problems of "stalling" 4G
I went back to the GB radios for 2.10.605.1... and it was much worse. 4G stalled even more, and when toggling back to 3G only mode, I got no data at all (even with bars).
I think it is like most experts are saying... each device is different. Some radios work for your device and some won't.
Edit: I'm gonna go talk about this in the Android Revolution thread, so I guess we can stop here. The phone is constantly switching to 3G mode now too, like every time I turn off the screen and turn it on it's in 3G mode, it has never done that, so something is wrong!
Not sure what else to call the thread, lol. Still working on my 10 posts after 1 year (ha) so I can't put this anywhere else.
As of yesterday I had S-Off, CID 11111111, stock Bell Canada ROM. It's been a while since I used the Speedtest.net app, but I'm pretty sure my results would be up to 10 mbps area, sounds about right for a 4G 14.4 mbps phone? I know when I last tested I was not upset at the result.
Last night I installed Android Revolution 6.2.1 XE with 3.6 Sense and Beats Audio.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14192842&postcount=4
I have the firmware loaded, and everything went fine, and I can confirm that the recommended radio 11.68.3504.00U_11.21.3504.13_2 is showing in device info.
I searched the thread and found in FAQ that it will not show H+, rather H, and it should still be in 4G mode. But I just did a speedtest.net and can only get about 0.8-2.5 mbps no matter which server I select. I am in Calgary. I also searched and confirmed that I am NOT to select the T-Mobile 4G option from the ROM install menu, which I did not.
Is there any ROM I can quickly revert to that does use the H+ or stock like settings that I can do a speed test and see what normal results are? Or is anyone in Calgary on stock phone can run a rest? ha, not sure where else to go with it, and don't want to undo root and put stock back on.
... but something worries me that I am getting hosed on my download speed. Soemthing makes me think I am not getting 4G.
Any thoughts are appreciated!

Additionally, my ping on Speedtest app to the Calgary server, from within Calgary, is ~350ms.
Seems way high, perhaps that's the issue and I need to figure that out first?

not only a problem in your country..
same here in the netherlands (den helder)
Well I just had a friend test his Bell iPhone, I understand they are not 4G or may be on different frequencies or whatever, but same Speedtest.net Calgary server he got 5 mbps down speed and 56 ping, so I'm thinking my 350+ ping is the root of my issue, everything is sluggish. One more post and I can talk about this in the other thread I guess.

So I recently got an Inspire, coming from a Vibrant. I have T-mobile service. On the Vibrant, in the same location, I had superb cell signal. On this Infuse, it's more than terrible.
I know it's designed to be an ATT phone, and the internal hardware won't pick up certain T-Mobile bands, but I have also had a couple other unlocked phones that got better signal than this.
I can literally set the Vibrant down on the table with 3-4 bars of service, and the Infuse next to it with Emergency Only or an X (no signal). In other random spots I can get a couple bars, but very spotty. Sometimes I'll have a couple of bars, and literally not move an inch and lose signal. That's frustrating!
I know I can't get 3g-4g speeds. Not an issue with me, I use wireless, but I do want to figure out how to make and receive phone calls.
I unlocked using Ace, and let it run for a few days before making any other changes. Today I flashed Android Revolution HD 6.3.3, and then flashed the recommended radio about an hour later. (used the fastboot method described in the radio's readme, the RIL was included in the Rom)
So my signal is slightly better, but only barely. Still very unreliable.
I guess my hope is, to gain some insight as to how the radio even works, so I can start to learn the differences in them, and find one that works better.
Is there any hope that I will find one that is suitable?
Can anyone recommend radios/a solution?
I also wonder, since the Desire has compatible radios, and they are used in Europe, if they may pick up T-Mobile USA signals better.
Thanks for reading, and thanks in advance for your help and advice!
P.S. I know its been discussed before, however, I've read hours and hours worth of posts, and in the end I decided asking was definitely worth it. Ya'll are smart!

Radios react differently for everyone cause they are actually based on regions as to where your at. But there are positive responses on the .03 , .28 and .30 radios. Give them a shot and try them out each for about a few days and see how they work for you. Development section has a radio thread you can get them from.
Just remember flash radios at your own risk, they are a little riskier than flashing roms. Good luck
I've started having some horrible issues with my phone connecting to Verizon networks properly. I used to be able to connect to 4G networks at my house and surrounding area with no issue, but now I've been having the worst time getting it to lock. Currently I'm connected to 3G at -99dBm in my household.
I originally was running stock, but fully rooted, S-Off. I've since switched to trying AOKP and now I've settled on Sinless GPe 3.4.7. I have not seen any real difference between them as far as getting a good connection to the network. I started switching ROMs well after I've noticed an issue, and I have not done much of anything to my phone in the last few weeks that I could attribute to the change. I've never dropped the phone or damaged it in any way.
I just recently traveled across the state and would run speedtests next to my wife's iPhone 5c and 19/20 times she'd show full bars with LTE service while I was either on 3G or no service at all. My phone will connect to 4G sometimes though, it's just not that often.
I read that there may be an issue with my SIM card, so I stopped in and had it replaced. The guy seemed very confused about the state of my phone software, so he blamed any issue I was having on the software installed. Regardless I did get a new SIM card installed. It did not seem to help at all. Can anybody help me? I'd hope to not have to go through the hassle of attempting to get the phone replaced!
Bootloader information:
HBoot-3.16.0.0000
Radio-0.89.20.0321
After rebooting my phone, my phone locked to an LTE signal at -112dBm. It does not speed test at over 3Mbps. Testing my wife's iPhone shows her at -100dBm and she was able to pull 30Mbps down.
There is talk of poor signal reception/speed in gpe threads. Cm based Roms, dunno. Try flashing a sense ROM, do some tests and report back
I recommend clean ROM or any other ROM on Verizon base
I just received my M8 yesterday and am having the same issues (both wifi and LTE) running the latest PA. Going to try something with a VZW base and report back.

I reloaded my backup of the Stock ROM and I am still seeing the same issues. It seems to connect sometimes but most of the time it will not. It seems like its just not getting a good lock. I am having trouble even using the phone at my house now whereas I've always had great service here. Doing a speed test now, the phone states 3G service, tested with 705 ping, download of 0.17, upload shot up to 58.19 (which obviously isn't true) and then froze while testing and has been here for over three minutes.

I would run the RUU and try again, and just see if something got boogered
Confirming as well that the reception isn't the greatest with this phone/radio in the so so service areas.
I live out in the country. Never had good reception with Sprint no matter the phone. Switched to Verizon with an LG G2 and service was fantastic at home for the 7 months I owned it. I moved to the M8 and now phone service is spotty at my house. It's the radio for sure. Wifes verizon moto works great at home as well.
I've had the same issue, updated radios, flash back to stock, and everything else. The radio on this phone IMO is terrible, even when it does get 4G I get like 8 mbps down with 4 bars of 4g. Once in a great while i'll get 18 - 20 down with 5 bars of 4g.
I've been experiencing the same things recently as well. It also affects sending SMS messages. I am on stock too (with s-off). Nothing changed on my phone though, it just started dying.
Never had signal issues. I live out in the boonies too. Signal is strong and switching between 3g and 4g has been smooth. I've been able to download torrents as fast as 5mb/s. Speed test results have been just awesome. As far as signal goes, it's been better than my note 3, DNA, and my wife's droid mini. And this is my second m8. My son has the first and it is the same as mine.
I would look into exchanging them if they don't keep up with other phones. The radio in this phone is actually pretty damn sweet, so if u got a funky one, I'd exchange it. Def try the ruu first, then exchange if that doesn't help.
