Hi all, I've got a 2 month old i9023, stock, updated to 2.3.6, unrooted.
Ever since I purchased it, I've noticed a strange streak-like artifact on the screen, which only seems to appear when any app utilizes a low contrast palette (e.g. dark grey on black).
It's hard to describe, so I'm attaching two images: the first is from FBReader (where the artifact is most obvious due to all the text), and another is from the stock calendar, just to prove that it can occur in stock apps as well.
In both images, I've adjusted the contrast of the lower half of the images to highlight the artifact. Sorry for the crappy image quality -- cheap camera.
I've a friend who has an i9020. I've checked his phone, and the artifact is not seen on the OLED screen. Is this a SLCD only issue? Has anyone else experienced this and how did you solve it (if you managed to)? I'm hoping to avoid sending it in for warranty 'cause I just know it'll take ages to resolve.
Hi, can someone with an i9023 verify whether similar visual "streaks" are present on your display? Thanks!

Well I don't have I9023 specifically , but I think those artifacts are abnormal !!
Does your purchase include any sort of warranty ?
i have an almost one year old I9023 and never saw somenthing like that
I have an i9023 too and have no such artifacts. Looks like screen bleeding.
I'd definitely be taking that to samsung, though you'll have to weigh up the benefits and uselessness of them.
Thanks guys, looks like it's a hardware issue then.
Yeah, I'm reaaaally loath to step into the black hole that is warranty claims. Ah well, gotta bite the bullet some time I guess.

if you bought it at a brick-and-mortar store you could just take it back there, you could save yourself some time (and frustration!)

Ok Xoomers does anybody have grey horizontal bleeding on your display?
When the screen is pretty dark the black seems to "bleed grey" horizontally.
I don't know how else to describe it.
I can see it noticeably durring the boot animation, but there are other times it's worse.
It's been there for a while now but I thought it was software related until I noticed it didn't go away no matter what I flashed.
I just filled out the Motorola warranty form and I'll be sending it back. I just wanted to see if anybody else had the same issue.

I don't and have never had this problem. Did you say it just started or has it been like that since the begining?
I first noticed it after I flashed the first tiamat kernel. I thought it might be related for a long time but it seemed like a small price to pay for the added features... and it wasn't really that bad then. Its gotten a bit worse over time.

Do you think it could be related to overclocking the gpu?
Possibly. I don't use any apps to overclock it (like set CPU) but it might be being pushed harder anyway. I haven't set myself back to complete stock yet but I guess I will have to before I send it in. I'll see if it still shows up then.
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
I did still notice it when I went to the 3.2 rooted update. And that was the stock kernal I think.

If the gpu got fried, I would think that the damage might be lasting...that's a big "if" of course.
Well, good luck with the return?repair? and keep us posted. I'd like to know what that is.

Hey mr_wrong i have the exact same issue...how did your return go?
Lol, mine does that, too. I just thought the display sucked. I am 100% stock. I just got this thing in an acceptable state and dread the prospect of getting something worse as a replacement. If this is not normal, I'll try to get it fixed.

I have an invisible shield (Zagg) and that case that Best Buy sells. I noticed the banding issue too. Turns out it was the impression that the case makes on the shield. Confirmed when I removed the shield.
Sounds like you guys issues may be deeper, though

Question to all of you Infinity owners. I don't have any major issues, light bleed, etc. However, i do have a concern about the 1mm or so black bar around the edge of the display between the black bezel and the actual displayed image (even on the main homescreens). Does your Infinity have this issue? It's not very noticeable, however, I am curious as to if I should exchange mine for a new one or if they are designed this way to not utilize the full display.
It's stock, not rooted, and not unlocked *yet If someone has the issue, please post PICS. I am at work and can't exactly do that with mine at the moment.
But, basically, it looks as if there is a 1mm or .5mm black "frame" around the display between the black bezel and the actual display imaged. Kinda reminds me of a double picture frame.
Can someone post a pic of there homescreen in as highest resolution possible, whether you have the issue or not so I can make a determination.
Thanks in advance
Mines got this, infact my phone and nook color has it too. Never noticed it before, probably will never notice after I hit enter. I imagine perhaps this is too keep light from the screen from bouncing off the framed bezel and creating a blur effect, just me guessing here.

Okay, thanks. I really appreciate it. I didn't notice it on the Prime I had....
Anyone else? Can you post PICS if you don't or do please??
Trying to determine if I should return it for a new one or leave as is....as said in the OP, I don't have any other issue other than this...if it is truly an issue or if it is designed that way...

It seems everything has this, there's even this slight boarder on mon monitors I'm looking at now (all 5 of them!)
Thanks....kinda what I thought, but what is odd is that I didn't notice it on my Prime or my EVO 4G LTE. I guess it makes sense cause if you view it from different angles WO this border, it would cut off a mm or so of the screen (not a big deal), but it may be for some people.
Alright, thanks....Will keep mine then...

Try an alternate launcher such as Apex or Nova. You'll find that you can change the margin setting which allows you to use the entire screen using these launchers. I don't understand why the stock launcher wastes so much screen!
I recently bought a Nexus 5 32 GB Black from Google Play Store India. I find an issue with the display. I can see horizontal lines on the display on looking closer to the screen. Anyone else facing similar issue? Just wanted to be sure that the issue is with my device only before requesting for RMA. It really can't be captured on a camera, but if anyone has seen it already, they should be able to know what I am talking about.

well its not a problem when the screen is on.. The only time you can notice it is if your looking at it in a certain angle in a certain light lol.

I see it all the time. It is clearly visible on white and light backgrounds.
I've got them too. You can see them very prominently in the orange part of the wallpaper. Sorry about the orientation/Quality. Taken with my Nexus 7. x)
Thank you for making this topic! I have the same issue and I was wondering if it's just me. I can see the horizontal lines without even looking at the screen up close. I haven't had a chance to compare it with anything else though... I'm sending in my device for RMA due to the power button, I can report back in about 10 days if the new device has the same issue (if you want).
Using the same wallpaper, I don't see these lines on my device. I would definitely send it back for a replacement.

No horizontal lines on display here (310K)
Yeah... I don't see like that on my nexus 5. I think your screen is defected.

Definitely defective screen.
I only have this problem when i am viewing a video on facebook or in my snapchat.. besides that it doesnt happen or i dont see anything at all.

I know this post is old, but I purchased a N5 a few days ago, and I found the same issue as you describe. It´s not like the image hakim1125 posted, is something more subtle, like grey horizontal lines all across the dislplay, right? In my case the lines are even visible at normal usage distance. So, is this supposed to be normal? Have you exchanged yours for a new one?
Sorry for my english.

I would do RMA, the problem is I bought the device in the US, and I live in Argentina. So I guess I´ll have to live with it.
I made an image with photoshop that illustrates the issue some of us are talking about. (See image below)
Specially on white or light backgrounds...It is barely noticable when viewing the screen at normal distance (you have to look for it), but is visible with the phone at a closer distance (about 6 inches)
Thanks for your help.

Oh mann. That's terrible. I guess you will need to live with it. However, I would still recommend showing it to a LG service center. It could also be a faulty/loose cable and if that's the case, you need not cough up much money to fix it.
So I jsut updated my google camera app yesterday and was eager to try any new features and test the camera, when all of a sudden I noticed that there is a dark blemish right in the middle of the screen. I am 100% sure it wasnt there when i bought it, as I did tested it extensively. At first I thought that it was actually a screen defect or that there is a smudge on the lenses.
It appears on every photo, HDR or not. It is best visible on light background. You can check the attached test photo i did.
I am not a huge photography fan, but it does bother me alot knowing that my brand new 2 months old nexus defected. Its rooted ofcourse, so there is no guarantee.
I read somewhere that this is caused by a dust particle inside the camera lenses.
So I just wanted to know whether someone else is suffering from that exact same issue. And if there is an easy way to cope with that problem, e.g. disassembling the lense or forcing air into it :silly:
So, yes, any opinions would be welcome.
Thanks guys
p.s. Also, if anyone else had experienced it, Im curious what case (if any) had they been using? lol I actually noticed the problem after removing and inserting my N5 back into my spigen neo hybrid a couple of times, which is actually quite a challenge. So Im wondering whether that hasnt something to do with it
I wouldn't advise you to open the device up yourself.. You will surely loose warranty if you mess up.
If you think it's a hardware issue then Flash the factory images from Google to return to stock
, reset the tamper flag, lock the bootloader and send it in..

Yep, I can confirm the same experience as you! Only appeared yesterday! I have the Rev11 Hardware.
A bit of googling did reveal others with the same issue...
I have tried a can of compressed air, tapping phone...No joy, it's still there...
I have also tried different camera apps to confirm. Interestingly it was post updating the google camera app too. (but i do not believe this too be the root cause, I've had many specs of dust in my DSLRs before and to appears to me to be dust on the rear of the lens or on the sensor!) I would expect these to be sealed on our phones!
RMA, warranty...are looming...any other ideas peeps?
Cheers

I tried the tapping trick too - did not work for me either
I'm still contemplating over the idea of reverting to stock, locking the bootloader and sending in my faulty unit. It would probably take a couple of weeks and I don't want to part ways with my N5 for so long. But living with that nasty blemish on my camera is equally frustrating
I'm going to try this.

I had this issue a few months back; the image you posted looks identical to the issue I had.
Google covered it under warranty and sent me a new device. They asked me to do a full factory reset to confirm it wasn't software related. The process was pretty smooth: if they do send you a new device, you just send your N5 back once it comes so you're not stuck without a phone for a while or anything. They do put a hold on your credit card for the price of the phone until they get your phone, though.
I had it rooted and everything prior to sending it in, but I unrooted/reset the tamper flag before sending it in (and did a factory reset obviously).
I have the same problem but with Nexus 5x. Not 100% sure was the dark spot in the middle at the beginning or not. Now the device is about a week old.
Now this really isn't an issue at all but it was pointed out by my friend. There may be other ways of noticing the same but here's how I do it.
Sit in a dark room, as dark as possible (best at night).
Increase the brightness to maximum.
Open any video on MX Player, pause it and zoom out (decrease video size) as much as possible.
Observe the corners around the chin of the device. You should see some light leaking through.
Now of course this isn't an issue you'd encounter normally but it just kinda freaked us out. Any idea what might be causing it? I have no technological knowledge about displays except for the fact that pixels are turned off for black areas in AMOLED displays. We don't have navigation keys backlight either.

There should be no light leak/bleed on an AMOLED screen phone, that is common for IPS screens.
Did you get the phone from the official site?

Doubt it's possible to have "rogue" pixels but I will have to see for myself when mine arrives. But my friend who has it never complained about it, so I have a feeling only a certain batch of them might have this issue.
There also might be a chance it's related to software, so did you try using another rom?

It certainly is weird. I mean that light bleed doesn't exactly appear to be "rogue" pixels either. Plus it's rather too dim to be noticed unless you're sitting in an absolutely dark room with your brightness maxed out and about 75% of the screen totally black (which would rarely ever happen). I believe it could be possible that every unit has this but never really has been noticed by anyone.
The issue isn't that great for me to switch to another ROM and test it. Just wanted to bring this to everyone's notice. I'm on OOS 5.1.11 (rooted)
Yes, I ordered 2 and they were both defect so I sent them back. I did not send them back because of this tho, however i also recognized that both of them had really bad uniformity issues and it looked like the edges were bleeding. I observed that on a white background. I am living in germany and ordered from amazon, the second one got dust in it's front camera lense, when it arrived and the first one was emitting a loud static noise, like coil whine. It's insane, I just want a proper working phone. Not sure, whether I should order a 3rd one.

Wow that's a really big let down on Amazon's part to send defective units, and that too twice! However, I checked my screen for any such uniformity issues both on black and white but didn't find any such except for this one. And I repeat again, this is barely noticeable and is visible only when you're in absolute dark, with maximum brightness on black screen.
Although such a thing is ignorable but it's something which isn't really expected from OnePlus.
