Why should I install a custom ROM over offical version? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What are the advantages? I have official 4.0.3, and I don't usually use any of the stuff that requires rooting. I didn't even root my Nexus S yet lol.
Why custom ROM? Which one? And what features do I get?

It makes my pr0n load faster.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium

Costum Roms allow you to tweaks almost everything, like overclocking, over/under volting, set governators, I/O scheduler and so on, u get better performance and sometimes (depending on Rom+kernel combo) better battery life. Eerything goes cool & smoother. Just see an review about custom roms (cm9, bixie, alfonso, kang, etc) on youtube to get an idea.
If this info helped you somehow hit thanks button please.
cheers

Custom ROMs make the s3x much better with multiple orgazm.. lol..
Really, it's a sin owning a Nexus S and not rooting/installing custom ROMs. Custom ROMs offer many more features, stability, performance than stock ROM, otherwise the devs won't spend countless hours for just building another stock ROM. Once you flash/use a custom ROM, you will not go back to stock, and that's a sure thing.
Here's just a few things custom ROMs and rooting offer
* Speed
* Stability
* Endless custom mods/features
* Firewall
* Adblock
* Eyecandy themes (if the custom ROM supports themes)
* CPU overclocking/underclocking
* Privacy Guard -- prevent apps from getting unnecessary private permissions such as getting your phone number, IMEI, etc...
I know some people relate the term "jailbreaking" with "rooting", and they're afraid to root because it has a bad vibe to it. "Rooting" != "Jailbreaking". If you come from a Linux background, then you have no problem understanding what "rooting" means. If you're a Windows user, think of "rooting" as granting the "Administrator" access (not to be confused with the Android's Administrator which you can grant some apps without rooting). What can you do with Windows Administrator access/rights? Similar things can be done on the Android device if you have root access.

Do u ever think music can be better?
Gps faster cold fix?
Gaming low temp. ?
Batt.lasting longer?
Camera quick shot, nice shot?
Function fast accessing , ex. to turn on wifi hotspot, just hit one button and touch.......
Jump between rom to rom within 5 mins.... (like Pc hardisk gosh)
.
.
.
.
Which one is better ? No one can say extracly..... We can only count some good (in hundreds of other good) as CM rom, Criskelo rom, Exynos extreme rom, Miui rom ....for Ginger, and for Ics that is too early to talk.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk

Besides all the features mentioned above, a custom Rom depends on each of the features you need.
One I like (as in MIUI's ROM) is CyberGR v7 the ability to skip tracks with the sound volume when phone is locked.
Also, some non-important, ability to kill activity by holding the back button, 4-way Reboot, some might have the FB sync problem fixed, etc.

If looking at all those settings options get you excited then you definitely should flash a custom ROM (AOKP in this case). If you look at those settings as a chore to have to mess with then you should just stay happy with stock.

You can find here on XDA general how to root it and how to flash custom roms and kernels, so you dont need to google it. Btw there is a good and easy step-by-step guide here: http://nexusshacks.com/nexus-s-root/how-to-root-nexus-s-or-nexus-s-4g-on-ics-or-gingerbread/ . It takes 15 or less minutes to root your SGS and install a new ROM.
Good luck

I had a Milestone awhile back and it got the last official update OTA and it really slowed down the device. Luckily there were some good rome out there, even gingerbread ones that really increased the speed of the device as well as the battery life.

Honestly stock ICS is great as is.

definitively better than stock GB (which i never liked), but I'm using CM9 now after some weeks with stock ICS and I won't go back
honestly using a custom ROM is somenthing you want to try, you can always go back to stock if you want

my thought just like you before i try any custom rom. Tweaks stock rom much better than stock rom

I agree. Once a ROM is past beta/alpha tests, you will most likely get a better experience than stock (even though a ROM is a constant work in progress).

I'd suggest that you follow the advice given by the ROM's cook, each ROM is different, advice is usually found in the first post of each ROM thread.
The ROM Runs over the Kernel and interacts for all your work to be done.
For perfect compatiblity and better experience , You need to update/Flash a Kernel.

According to my knowledge, Kernel provides other extra features.
-> I have used Tiamat kernel in MIUI, got good speaker volume, increased sound quality
-> Using Unity ROM in sense based ROM provides 2 way call recording feature
And I think it is used for improving overall performance of phone and get rid from some issues in custom ROMS.
It gives you extra features over stock kernel such as extra & improved CPU governors, CPU clocks for over and underclocking, changing voltage etc.

A different kernel will have an effect on Battery life, camera performance, audio performance, cpu performance, wi-fi performance... Think of them like drivers.
Devs can take the stock kernel, and tweak it to improve performance in these areas or to offer you additional options like over-clocking.
While most Sense ROMs will run just fine on a stock Sense kernel, AOSP ROMs will usually require a custom one to run properly. If a ROM requires a certain kernel other than stock to function, it’ll usually be mentioned in the ROM thread or included in the ROM .zip itself. Read carefully. Also use the search function on a particular ROM thread. Search for ‘kernel’ or ‘best kernel’ and quickly get an idea of what people are using and having the best success with.
Always take a backup before changing a kernel in case you get stuck booting up. Also if it does hang on boot, DO NOT PULL THE BATTERY. Take the battery cover off, and get ready by the battery hinge. Hold down Vol+ and Vol- and power button. When the screen goes black THEN pull the battery, and do not re-insert for at least 10 seconds. Some of these phones are prone to frying their eMMC chip if you do a live battery pull. I can’t guarantee if you follow the above it wont happen anyway, it’s just what has worked for me so far when I’ve been stuck on boot. Probably part technique and part luck!
Below is an over-view of the android OS to give you an idea of how it’s put together.

Mostly is like this.
AOSP based roms have one specific kernel. (tiamat by example)
Sense based ones have another (Unity by example)
If you flash a rom it already come with kernel. So you sure changed it a lot of times if you flashed roms.
The diference if you install a specific rom is for features. Most of them make better use ob battery and allow overclock

You can get stock ROM from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1002506
hello superkid,
nice that i got u here. i couldn't write u in yr thread as it still showing i'm a new user.... anyway listen i want u to know that i'm a big fan of yr work like many other else.. MIUI is the most beautiful ROM available i see.. but i have a few complains or suggestions, whatever you say...
1. Application drawer: please include an app drawer as i see already a MIUI ROM available in xda with app drawer. But ,if u do that, please make it as 3x3, not as 4x4 or 5x5 cause it reduces the real beauty of the MIUI icons plus please try to include the icon shadows....
2. Messaging application: well i'm using desire s n in HTC, sms application automatically shows all sms from both phone memory n sim memory, but in MIUI i see that sim messages not showing like that. to see sim messages i have to go into settings>manage sim messages.. but even from there, there is no option to import them into yr phone memory... can u solve this?
3. i had also one or two issues with the latest 1.9.16 version ,for what i returned back to 1.9.9, though right now i can't recall lol
4. HTC sense: lastly, is there really no way to add some features of HTC sense to it as I'm seeing a developer published recently a HTC sense ROM claiming to be based on MIUI ROM, but mostly it's a sense ROM than MIUI.
Well man again i'm saiong I'm a big fan, so don't get mad at me. I just want MIUI to be the best without any lagging... Thanks in advance.

Hey guys, so recently I've been looking for resources and stuff and I found this rom called LeWa Os. It's similar to MIUI in terms of themes, customization, initial theme when you first flash it, but it's based on CM7 so it has CM features. I took the time to port it to our beloved Sensation and will do my best to fix out the remaining bugs... It's running on Android 2.3 and has awesome eyecandy + fluid performance ...
It's based on the only CM7 build that I can find for the sensation:
Code:
update-cm-7.1.0-SelfKANG1-Sensation-signed
This list shows a little of it's awesomeness, there are too many features to list...
If you press on Statusbur, softkeys will appear
Swipe up to open apps drawer
Miui like toggles in statusbar
*Oh yea* There is a task killer button in the statusbar
*Miui Like* SO many themes to customize
Included power manager app
Stylish slider to accept/reject calls
Smooth ROM!
Did I mention the charging animation!
Datamanager included in statusbar
ICS Transitions
Too many!
Bugs:
IDK, I didn't test this, so if any brave soul could test it I would appreciate that!
Installation:
Taken from the Cyanogenmod forums:
Instructions:

No I haven't worked on any of the bugs yet... But this is based on alpha 10 so I think they might be fixed: Taken from the CM forums:
The current buglist:
-Recording 1080p video for a couple minutes causes a soft reboot
-Misc Browser crashes (CM bug)
-Zoom issues in Camera
Other than those (relatively) minor bugs, this rom is perfect.

This ROM is very pleasent surprise...stick with CM7 not with CM9 because there are a lot of various cm9 editions of all flavoirs...what is needed is cm7 base ROMs.
I will give a try...for now, on Hyperdroid cm7...in the future, on Lewa certainly.
What is this roms bugs?

Good to have another Sensation chef in the kitchen!
Well after putting my mind to it, I finished my attempt at porting a CM7 rom to CM9 and now I'm scared to try it :/ (I'm a wimpy chef, I know )
So I think I'll just keep it at CM7 since no one has anymore of those roms anymore and it seems like gingerbread is more stable...
So for those who have ICS now, downgrade:
tragik74 said:

Alright so all of us have ICS, recovery, and s-off, so all we have to do is flash the first firmware in this post (1.17) and flash this ROM...
So on to the bugs. From my first port for the Atrix I had the following:
1. PC didn't detect phone on USB, only can charge from wall...
2. Boot animation, lock screen, and music player aren't scaled...
3. SD manager fcs... (It's a lame version of miui file manager)
1. It shouldn't do that on this ROM, but if it does I'll look into it and see if my friend can help me fix it like he helped on the Atrix...
2. So I'll work on scaling the the boot ani, and lock screen, and I'll just replace the music plaer...
3. Just remove it and replace with the actual miui file manager...

Hello Captivate peeps!

Just dropping in. Been registered for a while but havt really been active. I am sporting the AT&T Samsung Captivate SGH-I897 with the Sedio 3300MAh battery.
Here is a screenshot of my build. I guess my question is, are there better builds or faster builds? I'm really like this one. Haven't gotten to deep into flashing roms or anything yet. Just poking around reading now but being new I have a lot to learn. Its like a foreign language here lol.
I spend most of my forum time at notebookreview.com and techinferno.com. Glad to be here. Hoping to stretch this Captivates life. I deploy again in April so I don't feel like springing for a new phone since it'll be outdated by the time I get back. The captivate will go with me overseas to keep me from being bored. Movies, games ect.

You could always try a CM10 nightly, but I don't have any first hand experience with that one so I don't know how stable it is. I am using Slim Beam 2.6 on my Captivate and am really happy with the performance ... it's very fast, no random reboots, no force closed apps and I just love the look and feel.

If your not familiar with flashing I wouldn't worry with CM10. As long as your ver of CM9 is doing good I wouldn't do it. Sounds like you've got your phone how you like it.

If you have CWM recovery installed, you can always do a nandroid backup from recovery. That is the best recovery method, IMHO. Titanium backup is also very good. I have used it several times for apps.
Be sure and snyc with google and backup sms too. i always power off the phone, remove my SIM card, then power back on, and do what I need to do, especially while flashing ROM's.
Any thread that has a Rom, usually the Dev has specific installation instructions for it. I like to read them twice, before I do anything.

On the first boot I thought i was in a boot loop but it came through just gave it a min to think about what it was doing i guess lol. Another thing to check out is Pimp My Rom.zip even if its for just the Walkman and Hulu Apps only. I wouldn't apply all the tweaks anyway b/c Slim Bean is probably already tweaked out. The Only other ones I used were Security enhancements.
Any issues

You should check out helly bean 10/18. Its smoking fast. Also beware with cm9 and ICS. There is an internal storage bug that has crippled two of my captivates internal SD. Jelly bean (4.1.2) does not have that problem. Check out hellybean.com for the all in one multiple device zip flash file.

Thanks for your work, this should be EPIC!
Scott's developer edition S3 has arrived !
Thank you for this Scott, I look forward to giving it a shot.
Can someone point me to the lean kernel? I just want to make sure I have the correct one.
Thanks
Edit: Is this the lean kernel compatible with this Rom?

No, that is the aosp kernel for cm10 roms, etc. You need the tw kernel which is currently at v10 I believe. It's on that same site.

This ROM is awesome so far! The only bug I have found is the Google search widget isn't working. Only the voice search part of it is working but when you click in the box to do a text search, nothing happens. Anyone else notice this?

It really cracks me up that this rom is the lightest possible and weighs in at just over a half a gig. LOL.
That being said, this rom seems great so far, although it's only been a few hours. I actually picked up my phone a few weeks ago and immediately rooted it and threw Paranoid on it. Loved it, but it just wasn't ready yet...I had daily issues. Then, I was reading a thread by Morfic on his Trinity Kernel and wondered why it was for Touchwiz only. He said it just worked better and that CM based roms 'weren't ready'.
He was right. I switched to CleanROM and noticed it ran exceptional. I just throw HoloLauncher or Apex over it and it's close to AOSP, or at least close enough until they get the issues out.
Anyway, this rom is titties, IMO.
Thanks, Scott!

I think we just found your next roms tagline.
I just don't understand why CM is trying to support so many devices. Their roms are almost unuseable most of the time. Any ways not the place to discuss. I'm waiting for user reports before jumping on. Its always a pain to wipe everything and set up everything to my liking again.

We need Barebone kind of ROMS [just 33MB!!]

We all know that our device has less RAM, it cannot handle big games and there is battery drain problem too in the ICS and JB ROMs. So it would be helpful if some developers find a way to bring those goodies to our device too
We must appreciate the work being done by Lola on X-GamerZ ROM. Don't forget to thank him.
There is already a project running on the smallest ROM i.e, Barebone.. for the Galaxy s plus device.

This is a pretty cool idea... basically this Barebones ROM can transform your device into a one application only device. For example, there would be no launcher, you could replace the launcher with a music app, which in essence would make your Galaxy SL into a simple music player. It would be useful if your Galaxy SL is not your primary device and you need a dedicated music/video player, and if you dont have any other use for your SL. Benefits of this ROM? You could have much longer battery life because of all the disabled services, boot time would be incredibly quick. This is interesting, I might take a look into it and if I get it to work I will post a Barebones ROM (no promises :silly: ) , even though I doubt many people would use it.
Edit:
Actually it doesn't have to be just one app, if you keep the Barebones launcher that comes with the ROM you can use multiple apps, just dont expect to be able to use phone call, sms, wifi or bluetooth

This would really help if someone is buying a new device and if they still wanna keep the old one
and thanks for the interest you are showing on this. May be we can expect a small ROM with basic functionalities :fingers-crossed:
May be a rom like liteKPU released earlier.
Though it was not 33mb but it was pretty sleek. Which made it super fast.
Maybe a liteLF2 can solve the purpose with some tweaks.

Yeah that's true, but as we already have developers working on JB, why go back to GB!?
Once the kernel 3 is ready for daily use, no one will look back. .
So may be a small JB ROM with kernel 3 would run in a blazing speed in our device

I have tried this CM10.1 [ROM][4.2.2] for sometime, it's really fast and everything works fine except the fact that you cannot restart without removing battery and frequent SODs.
After the ICS development stopped at Alpha 14 and JB development going on but still at Alpha 5, we don't have a stable ROM

Exactly :good:
I need a ROM which has very basic operations and saves as much RAM as possible and runs smooth on my device. . So far X-GamerZ is satisfactory but not the best though. . but he's genious and soon will come up with a ROM which is thin as a needle :victory:
The XS gapps (16mb) for 4.2.X... 4.1.X is on the way
