Hello Captivate peeps! - Captivate General

Just dropping in. Been registered for a while but havt really been active. I am sporting the AT&T Samsung Captivate SGH-I897 with the Sedio 3300MAh battery.
Here is a screenshot of my build. I guess my question is, are there better builds or faster builds? I'm really like this one. Haven't gotten to deep into flashing roms or anything yet. Just poking around reading now but being new I have a lot to learn. Its like a foreign language here lol.
I spend most of my forum time at notebookreview.com and techinferno.com. Glad to be here. Hoping to stretch this Captivates life. I deploy again in April so I don't feel like springing for a new phone since it'll be outdated by the time I get back. The captivate will go with me overseas to keep me from being bored. Movies, games ect.

You could always try a CM10 nightly, but I don't have any first hand experience with that one so I don't know how stable it is. I am using Slim Beam 2.6 on my Captivate and am really happy with the performance ... it's very fast, no random reboots, no force closed apps and I just love the look and feel.

Captivate Rom
As of the last few months, since August to be exact, I've been using HellyBean. I even ditched ATT... I might buy a new phone one of these days...but for now, I'm running Android 4.1.2 on my faithful cappy!!!
Jeremy

If your not familiar with flashing I wouldn't worry with CM10. As long as your ver of CM9 is doing good I wouldn't do it. Sounds like you've got your phone how you like it.
-If you do choose to flash CM10, look into BACKING UP your rom 1st. what gets backed up, and setting up phone again after install.
I just recently got a i897 with stock froyo 2.2, when I installed CM10 had to re-setup phone, but I Love It. Lots better with ! CyanogenMod ! :victory:

Thanks. I may give it a shot. What do you suggest I back up with? I have the paid version of Titanium Backup. I back up all my pics to my computer as well. Thanks again!!

If you have CWM recovery installed, you can always do a nandroid backup from recovery. That is the best recovery method, IMHO. Titanium backup is also very good. I have used it several times for apps.
Be sure and snyc with google and backup sms too. i always power off the phone, remove my SIM card, then power back on, and do what I need to do, especially while flashing ROM's.
Any thread that has a Rom, usually the Dev has specific installation instructions for it. I like to read them twice, before I do anything.

I 2nd this motion :highfive: :Backup Everything: even Apps with Titanuim
*-Edit, You might want to try out Slim Bean 2.7.0. I just flashed it. (just follow instructions on thread) It seems a lot of ppl here run it and compared it to be snappy like LAnight is, but with Way More options in the settings menu which is what was looking for. On the first boot I thought i was in a boot loop but it came through just gave it a min to think about what it was doing i guess lol. Another thing to check out is Pimp My Rom.zip even if its for just the Walkman and Hulu Apps only. I wouldn't apply all the tweaks anyway b/c Slim Bean is probably already tweaked out. The Only other ones I used were Security enhancements.

Any issues

Have you had any issues with CM10?? I have the official gingerbread now. I'm debating between the stable CM9, CM10 - nightly, or the Slim Bean 2.7. Which build of CM10 did you use??
Thanks!!

You should check out helly bean 10/18. Its smoking fast. Also beware with cm9 and ICS. There is an internal storage bug that has crippled two of my captivates internal SD. Jelly bean (4.1.2) does not have that problem. Check out hellybean.com for the all in one multiple device zip flash file.

The only issue I had with CM10 was Lag. It was build cm-10-20121013-NIGHTLY-captivatemtd.zip Especially when playing music. Anything interfering with my music has got to go.
I Just cleaned wiped and did a fresh flash to Slim Bean 2.8 yesterday and it is pretty awesome, already has Google play built in :victory:
I still have a problem with Google play, I cant install any of the Go stuff .?. Go Keyboard mainly, don't really need a task manager but I liked Go Task manager. The built in Holo Launcher is awesome. This Rom Slim Bean 2.8 is Snappy Good :good:

[ROM]PORT-NEW LUNA CM 6.0 for the MESMERIZE!!

I HAVE BEEN WORKING VERY HARD THE LAST WEEK TO GET THIS OUT TO YOU ALL AS A X-MAS PRESENT HERE YOU GO...
This is a port that I really like in all respects its Cynaogen 6.0 that I ported to the MESMERIZE it has a BLUE and BLACK splash/moon Theme. This is just the first of many to come from me....I found it here>http://luna.anthemofthesun.com/
This is based on JT's Clean Rom and has no Kernel attached you will not loose anything you have installed and AS ALWAYS DO A NAN-DROID BACKUP FIRST BEFORE YOU FLASH...This has only been tested on a voodoo kernel and has not had any issues if you find any please let me know ASAP as I have tested everything I can...
IMPORTANT>12/24/10: MAY BE AN ISSUE GOING FROM PICK-N-PACK TO THESE I WILL SEE FOR NOW FLASH CLEAN 2 AND THEN VOODOO IF YOU ARE RUNNING VOODOO AND REBOOT THEN FLASH THIS AS IT IS BUILT OFF OF THE CLEAN ROM>>>IF YOU ARE NONVOODOO AND PICK-N-PACK JUST FLASH CLEAN 2 AND REBOOT AND THEN FLASH THIS AS I KNOW THIS WORKS AND FIRST BOOT TAKES A MIN. BE PATIENT HANGS FOR A MIN OR MORE MAKE SURE YOU REBOOT BETWEEN FLASHES....IF YOU ARE VOODOO YOU HAVE TO FLASH KERNEL OVER TOP OF CLEAN 2 BECAUSE THAT ONE HAS A NONVOODOO IN IT AND WILL MESS WITH YA IF YOU DONT YOU CAN DO THOSE 2 AT SAME TIME JUST DO THE KERNEL LAST AND YOU WILL NOT HAVE TO DISABLE LAG FIX AND YOU WILL BE FINE THAT WAY....THIS IS ONLY IF YOU ARE PICK-N-PACK THAT THIS APPLIES FOR NOW TO BE SAFE......UPDATE>12/25/10: PICK-N-PACK IS OK TO USE BUT EVERYTHING ABOUT THE FLASHING OF A NONVOODOO OVER VOODOO STILL AND ALWAYS WILL APPLY.
INSTALL NOTE:TO PUT ON SD AND FLASH THRU CLOCKWORK-MOD RECOVERY NOT ROM MANAGER....DO A DALVIK CACHE WIPE AND THAT IT FLASH FROM SD AND REBOOT...FIRST BOOT TAKES A MIN OTHERS WILL BE NORMAL...

While they're fixing it I'm using a different theme/ROM.
My signature gives links. I love this theme (in this thread) I just want the MMS to work. I send 10-20 pics a day, so I kinda need it.

Tried to boot to this ROM...got to the splash screen and hung there forever....looked like it was in a boot loop. Tried flashing it twice...same thing.
Lesson learned.

This is not true, the SECOND link the OP gave is a .ZIP that includes a fully functioning ROM that is themed as shown in ADW. I just flashed this onto my new mesmerize last night and it worked wonderfully (after a learning process that I'll detail below). you may have clicked the first link that simply links to the page about the "luna theme" itself
I'd like to share an experience I had last night trying this process so that others may be informed prior to trying this.
I rooted my phone with Z4 root a few days ago, and also installed the Voodoo kernel with the lag fix. This was all I had done to the phone prior to finding this post and deciding to try out the ROM.
First attempt I followed the instructions well but for whatever reason I completely forgot to disable the lag fix and clearing the cache, so I went right into recovery mode and tried installing this .ZIP from the SD card.
The process was successful so I rebooted. I had the problem i4get75 has, it hung on the splash screen forever, and I instinctively "freaked out", pulled the battery and reverted back to my stock rom (using recovery).
Going back through the instructions I knew right away what I did and so I went ahead and disabled the lagfix through recovery mode (go to Voodoo, then disable) Then after reboot i again skipped a step and went straight to flashing again, after that succeeded I realised i forgot to wipe the cache so I went ahead and cleared the cache and flashed it one last time.
After that the phone booted, hung on the samsung screen for a few mins, then like magic the beautiful luna themed ADW popped up.
For some reason when I reverted back through recovery though, after boot i was missing many apps including the marketplace and my file manager, I'm not sure how this happened but thank god you had a file manager in your rom or I'm not sure how i would have gotten market and my other apps back on there (I'm really new to flashing and working with android, my first smartphone was the Motorola Q, didn't have this problem). In the end I was able to reinstall titanium backup from my SD card and restored them from there since the phone kept the backups
Many thanks to androidman78 and JT and all others involved for your time and talent!
I guess why I feel that this is just a Theme and not a ROM is that when I finally got it working I was seeing all my other apps and even my same wallpaper I had before the flash. To me, that's not a ROM but just a theme.

#1 - did you download the FULL rom? or just a theme
#2 - did you do a FULL wipe? if not then you need to do it right... do a full wipe then flash the rom, not the theme.

Why should I install a custom ROM over offical version?

What are the advantages? I have official 4.0.3, and I don't usually use any of the stuff that requires rooting. I didn't even root my Nexus S yet lol.
Why custom ROM? Which one? And what features do I get?
It makes my pr0n load faster.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium
Costum Roms allow you to tweaks almost everything, like overclocking, over/under volting, set governators, I/O scheduler and so on, u get better performance and sometimes (depending on Rom+kernel combo) better battery life. Eerything goes cool & smoother. Just see an review about custom roms (cm9, bixie, alfonso, kang, etc) on youtube to get an idea.
If this info helped you somehow hit thanks button please.
cheers
Custom ROMs make the s3x much better with multiple orgazm.. lol..
Really, it's a sin owning a Nexus S and not rooting/installing custom ROMs. Custom ROMs offer many more features, stability, performance than stock ROM, otherwise the devs won't spend countless hours for just building another stock ROM. Once you flash/use a custom ROM, you will not go back to stock, and that's a sure thing.
Here's just a few things custom ROMs and rooting offer
* Speed
* Stability
* Endless custom mods/features
* Firewall
* Adblock
* Eyecandy themes (if the custom ROM supports themes)
* CPU overclocking/underclocking
* Privacy Guard -- prevent apps from getting unnecessary private permissions such as getting your phone number, IMEI, etc...
I know some people relate the term "jailbreaking" with "rooting", and they're afraid to root because it has a bad vibe to it. "Rooting" != "Jailbreaking". If you come from a Linux background, then you have no problem understanding what "rooting" means. If you're a Windows user, think of "rooting" as granting the "Administrator" access (not to be confused with the Android's Administrator which you can grant some apps without rooting). What can you do with Windows Administrator access/rights? Similar things can be done on the Android device if you have root access.

Do u ever think music can be better?
Gps faster cold fix?
Gaming low temp. ?
Batt.lasting longer?
Camera quick shot, nice shot?
Function fast accessing , ex. to turn on wifi hotspot, just hit one button and touch.......
Jump between rom to rom within 5 mins.... (like Pc hardisk gosh)
.
.
.
.
Which one is better ? No one can say extracly..... We can only count some good (in hundreds of other good) as CM rom, Criskelo rom, Exynos extreme rom, Miui rom ....for Ginger, and for Ics that is too early to talk.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
Besides all the features mentioned above, a custom Rom depends on each of the features you need.
One I like (as in MIUI's ROM) is CyberGR v7 the ability to skip tracks with the sound volume when phone is locked.
Also, some non-important, ability to kill activity by holding the back button, 4-way Reboot, some might have the FB sync problem fixed, etc.

If looking at all those settings options get you excited then you definitely should flash a custom ROM (AOKP in this case). If you look at those settings as a chore to have to mess with then you should just stay happy with stock.

You can find here on XDA general how to root it and how to flash custom roms and kernels, so you dont need to google it. Btw there is a good and easy step-by-step guide here: http://nexusshacks.com/nexus-s-root/how-to-root-nexus-s-or-nexus-s-4g-on-ics-or-gingerbread/ . It takes 15 or less minutes to root your SGS and install a new ROM.
Good luck
I had a Milestone awhile back and it got the last official update OTA and it really slowed down the device. Luckily there were some good rome out there, even gingerbread ones that really increased the speed of the device as well as the battery life.

I agree. Once a ROM is past beta/alpha tests, you will most likely get a better experience than stock (even though a ROM is a constant work in progress).

[ROM] MIUI-2.8.17 JB Grouper v0.1 Alpha By Jmotyka and DroidVicious

[ROM]MIUI-2.8.17 JB Grouper v0.1 Alpha By Jmotyka and Droid_Vicious!
EDIT: This is going to be a co-development by me and droid_vicious. He is working his magic now.
Let me introduce myself. I'm jmotyka and im no developer, i am a graphic designer and android themer/enthusiast. I used to be a well known themer for the Nexus One and worked along side of Manup456. I have been out of the theming and developing seen for a while until now, i am very rusty. This is my first step into the android world again. I have many friends/devs that will help out when needed. I am a very busy man i dont have much time to develop, so please bare with me if i go on a multi-day hiatus. This rom is not and will not be my priority. I expect people to show some respect to me and others in this thread. If there is any sign of flamage in this thread rom development will immediately be halted and removed.
Credits:

Links (do not mirror):
Instructions:
1. Copy the rom - to SD Card
2. Boot into CWM and do a backup of your current rom
3. Flash the rom
4. Skip recovery flash!(after flashing the rom CWM will prompt you with the option to flash or skip. SKIP!!!!
5. Flash Grouper Gapps
6. Wipe Data
7. Reboot and DERP
Working:
Everything as far as i can tell.
Not Working:
Dont know yet, but everything seems to be fine as of right now
TODO List:
1; Remove Recovery
2. Finish English Translations
3. Add Reboot Menu
4. Add Custom Kernel
5. Find the best DPI for the rom and device.
Notes:
This rom actually comes from china. The only thing i did was change some build.prop stuff to get it functioning. To start off for some odd reason who ever developed the rom in china left the DPI to 310 and it looked horrible, so i set it to 213 which is the groupers standard dpi, it looked much better but the drop down notification window was getting cut off, so i decided to set it to 240 which looks great IMHO. This is by far not the final product. I am by no means a skilled developer but i am a tinkerer and if i run into issues usually i can fix them.
Important Notes
1)This rom for what ever reason has a recovery baked in. I recommend running cwm because cwm will let you SKIP the recovery flashing. I have not had time to remove this yet but i will. DONT ACCEPT THE RECOVERY FLASH BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW IF ITS OK OR NOT. I don't see why it would be a problem because this rom was developed for the N7.
2)I AM NOT TO BLAME IF YOU FLASH THIS AND YOU NEXUS 7 BLOWS UP. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED

What does that mean? Is that a good or bad thing? Screenshot please?
Also I noticed in the first screenshot it says "No service" at the top left corner. Does it always say that? Can that be removed and/or edited? Thanks!
I am kind of reluctant to root my Nexus 7 because I don't know if I can still receive official Google updates on Android if I root it or if I can even unroot it.
Sure
Fills the screen but does not overlap.
Here's a screen of the keyboard.
Regarding your other concerns I would say go ahead and root. With the toolkits available it is very easy to flash back to stock, unroot, and relock the bootloader if needed.

If you need help with something such as default language english and all that stuff i can help out. Also you can change the size to stock by modding the services.jar and androidpolicy.jar file. Im going to expiriment a bit, thanks so much again.
Edit
You are so amazing, i noticed you are using mediafire? If you want the next build you can send it to me and i can upload it to my site for direct download links. I have unlimited bandwidth so its no problem for me.
thanks for creating a v0.2 so efficiently, the recovery issue has been driving me crazy the past few hours!
Hyperrunner is here? If he starts helping out with this ROM, I might forget all my issues with MIUI and run this exclusively! I'm definitely gonna be keeping a close eye on this thread

[W.I.P] MIUI For SGS3

MIUI is one of the most popular ROMs ever built for android and you can read about it here --> http://en.miui.com/a-39.html
8/25/12: {UPDATE}
I am currently working on porting MIUI over to the SGS3, I am working with another developer right now and we are making A LOT of progress on the port. Currently there is no ETA for a release but hopefully we will be done soon. Anyways, we are still looking for testers so please post in the thread or send me a PM if you are interested in testing the ROM.

I would definitely be interested in this as well. I ran MIUI for quite some time on my DInc - great ROM.

Hello Everyone,
I am a big fan of MIUI and I was just reading that they recently released a JellyBean version of MIUI (here). I thought this would be great for our phone and now that our bootloader is pretty much unlocked I don't think it would be too hard to port this over. I was wondering if any of our great developers could look into this.
I am happy to use my phone as a testing device if anyone starts working on this.
Thanks,
Ljbaumer

You are welcome to start a port yourself check out miui.us or the cooking forums here on xda for instructions on how to start porting roms.
Otherwise, I would say that beans is the most likely to do this. He had a very nice MIUI port for the DX (I know because I tried it!)
Yes, I am looking into porting this rom over to the SGS3, I have been reading up on some guides for porting MIUI and I would love to read one about building roms for the SGS3 in specific. A couple years back I got into building roms for the DROID ERIS but I haven't done a lot of work with them since. I really have just been doing a lot of theming.
Either way, I will get started on a port and please point me to any useful information if you know of any!
Thanks,
Ljbaumer

Beans said in his release notes tonight that he is starting to port miui with cm10 as a base. I would expect an unofficial within a week

Yesss, miui would be awesome on this phone, can't wait for beans' port. His droid x port was nearly flawless

I just made an alpha 0.0.1 build of miui for the SGS3 (VZW), I am pretty sure it is loaded with bugs and may not even boot but there is a tiny bit of progress being made.
I am thinking that the main problem will be the updater-script. Please PM me if you can help with the updater-script or just know a lot about ROM building, AOKP (I am basing it off AOKP Milestone 6.1), MIUI, or you think you can help.
All I can say is good luck to you in your efforts. The last fully functioning MIUI ROM that I used was on the DInc. A few developers struggled very hard to get MIUI working on the HTC thunderbolt, and we never got a fully functioning ROM. They could never seem to get MMS to work properly. It seems that as our devices have become more and more sophisticated, it is harder and harder to get MIUI to fly. I hope earnestly that you can be successful on this. It is the smoothest, most user friendly, easy on the eye, ROM out there with themes galore. I can't wait!
New Build! Alpha 0.1.0! Testers Needed!
Currently uploading a new build...
Just an FYI, created another build that has a much better chance of booting than the previous one. I am looking for some testers, please contact me if you are available to test some builds for me.
Quick warning: there is a very good chance that the ROM will not boot correctly. In that case you may have a brick or you will have to restore your old ROM via recovery or just completely flash and re-root again via ODIN. I take absolutely no responsibility for what happens to your phone before or after you flash this ROM or anything else that I have made. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

Install Instructions:
1) Reboot To Recovery (I use CWM 6.0.1.0) (Don't use touch recovery)
2) MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR CURRENT ROM
3) Wipe data, cache, and dalvick-cache
4) Install ROM from SDCARD
5) Reboot and pray that it worked
6) Report Bugs back to me (almost 100% sure that there will be bugs)
Download here (Alpha 0.1.0 (Probably not working)): http://www.ljbaumer.com/android/MIUI/alpha/0.1.x/MIUI_2.8.3_CM10_BASE_ALPHA_0.1.0.zip
All testers are extremely appreciated!

No problem,
I realize I didn't really state what MIUI is in the OP. I will update it after this.
Anyways, MIUI is an extremely customized and smooth version of android that gives android a completely different look and feel. I really like it so I am working on porting it over to the SGS3. You can read all about MIUI and see some screenshots at their website right here: http://en.miui.com/
Or you can also do this: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=MIUI
MIUI is just like normal android, meaning you can use the play store and do all of the same things that you can do typically except you can also do tons of other cool extra stuff such as full theming support! Also the whole UI is re-done and it looks like a much improved version of HTC Sense mixed with TouchWiz (IMO).
Hopefully that helps a bit!
Thanks,
Ljbaumer

I am still trying to learn a lot about making ROMs for the SGS3, do you think you could PM me some information about how you made it? I am extremely curious.
Nice work!

Well my most recent build didn't work correctly so I think we are going to have to wait for Bean unless anyone wants to mess with my build from the OP.

OK just some questions, very nice looking rom excited to try!
Is this MTD based, or if we are on a MTD based JB rom do we need to maybe Odin back to GB?
Again just curious, is this based off scott's kernel, if so which one?
thanks for new rom...congrats sir..

It is based on teamhacksungs kernel via Dman, and yes it is MTD based. As far as I know, I'm not sure if you will have to Odin back to stock, I guess we will find out soon enough...

I flashed this coming from scotts 2.50 paranoid rom. I went to reboot and it hung on the samsung screen for about 15 min. Did a battery pull went to boot recovery, and wasnt able to do that, so I returned to stock.
I am going to play with the ROM though, so Im gonna start back over from scratch and hopefully get to use it before I get too sleepy. Family guy is on so Im good for now, lol. ROM sounds and looks pretty cool and im always game to try and test out new things, so im gonna try it. Thank you for bringing a new toy to the Infuse forums. Thanks for you and your team's hard work. :good:
Downloading, Thank crt60 for the new rom. :good:
Very excited to try this. I am on Scott’s CM10, can anyone confirm if I can flash from CM10(after wiping and formatting of course)? I won’t be near my home PC until late tonight and didn’t want to risk going through my whole day with a bricked phone

Great work CRT
This is MTP by default, however once your booted you should be able to go to settings>storage>hardmenukey> and change your preferred USB connection type.
Just saying. Check it out.
There has been problems with people realizing this on other devices lately.
Hope everyone enjoys and don't hesitate to spank a thanks button if your enjoying our work or if we've help you in anyway.

On some of the other devices, when people are having problems getting it flashed most users recommend coming from cm10
I would suggest creating a nandroid back up of your current ROM and should you run into a problem, you could restore it and be back to a use able phone.

I got it to boot just fine after returning to stock. Running it now, and so far so good. Very smooth. I love the orange theme. Never really been a fan of the color but it looks good in this.
