I'd suggest that you follow the advice given by the ROM's cook, each ROM is different, advice is usually found in the first post of each ROM thread.

The ROM Runs over the Kernel and interacts for all your work to be done.
For perfect compatiblity and better experience , You need to update/Flash a Kernel.

According to my knowledge, Kernel provides other extra features.
-> I have used Tiamat kernel in MIUI, got good speaker volume, increased sound quality
-> Using Unity ROM in sense based ROM provides 2 way call recording feature
And I think it is used for improving overall performance of phone and get rid from some issues in custom ROMS.

It gives you extra features over stock kernel such as extra & improved CPU governors, CPU clocks for over and underclocking, changing voltage etc.

A different kernel will have an effect on Battery life, camera performance, audio performance, cpu performance, wi-fi performance... Think of them like drivers.
Devs can take the stock kernel, and tweak it to improve performance in these areas or to offer you additional options like over-clocking.
While most Sense ROMs will run just fine on a stock Sense kernel, AOSP ROMs will usually require a custom one to run properly. If a ROM requires a certain kernel other than stock to function, it’ll usually be mentioned in the ROM thread or included in the ROM .zip itself. Read carefully. Also use the search function on a particular ROM thread. Search for ‘kernel’ or ‘best kernel’ and quickly get an idea of what people are using and having the best success with.
Always take a backup before changing a kernel in case you get stuck booting up. Also if it does hang on boot, DO NOT PULL THE BATTERY. Take the battery cover off, and get ready by the battery hinge. Hold down Vol+ and Vol- and power button. When the screen goes black THEN pull the battery, and do not re-insert for at least 10 seconds. Some of these phones are prone to frying their eMMC chip if you do a live battery pull. I can’t guarantee if you follow the above it wont happen anyway, it’s just what has worked for me so far when I’ve been stuck on boot. Probably part technique and part luck!
Below is an over-view of the android OS to give you an idea of how it’s put together.

Mostly is like this.
AOSP based roms have one specific kernel. (tiamat by example)
Sense based ones have another (Unity by example)
If you flash a rom it already come with kernel. So you sure changed it a lot of times if you flashed roms.
The diference if you install a specific rom is for features. Most of them make better use ob battery and allow overclock

Thank u all guys for yr help...

You can get stock ROM from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1002506

hello superkid,
nice that i got u here. i couldn't write u in yr thread as it still showing i'm a new user.... anyway listen i want u to know that i'm a big fan of yr work like many other else.. MIUI is the most beautiful ROM available i see.. but i have a few complains or suggestions, whatever you say...
1. Application drawer: please include an app drawer as i see already a MIUI ROM available in xda with app drawer. But ,if u do that, please make it as 3x3, not as 4x4 or 5x5 cause it reduces the real beauty of the MIUI icons plus please try to include the icon shadows....
2. Messaging application: well i'm using desire s n in HTC, sms application automatically shows all sms from both phone memory n sim memory, but in MIUI i see that sim messages not showing like that. to see sim messages i have to go into settings>manage sim messages.. but even from there, there is no option to import them into yr phone memory... can u solve this?
3. i had also one or two issues with the latest 1.9.16 version ,for what i returned back to 1.9.9, though right now i can't recall lol
4. HTC sense: lastly, is there really no way to add some features of HTC sense to it as I'm seeing a developer published recently a HTC sense ROM claiming to be based on MIUI ROM, but mostly it's a sense ROM than MIUI.
Well man again i'm saiong I'm a big fan, so don't get mad at me. I just want MIUI to be the best without any lagging... Thanks in advance.

Rom ( CDMA ) DEVASTATION

Here lies Devastation......... by Devastation Inc
This is a rom ive been tinkering around with for awhile now
It has the look of Leedroid but is really our stock rom wich
i tried to port Leedroid to.
Thanks to Weasel00 ( Jared ) of 2fast Roms and XDA for all his help with build.prop.. without him this wouldnt be possible.. thanks Jared
Dont worry about the name.. it will not destroy your fone.. i jus
thought it was a cool name.
If someone could test it out for me that would be great and post
problems you run into
again.. this only looks like Leedroid becuz i ported it to a stock
CDMA rom.. it doesnt have the overclocking or any of the goodies
from Leedroid
Ive only tested on my fone ( everthing seems to work fine on my Htc Desire ) but may not on other devices
Please only run this if you have a unlimited data plan for now.. it keeps switching from home to roaming on my fone
so for now this is not a everyday rom..
Things i changed
Boot animation to- Crysis animation
Boot sound to- crysis
but ive plans for other changes
On 1st boot you should have 140 mb free
App2sd
UOT Kitchen will work on this rom if you want to theme it differenty
This has only been tested on HTC Desire.. idk if it will work on other devices
Youre welcome to try though and if it does.. please post your device and i will
update post.
1st boot will take some time so jus hang in there.
Upon boot there may be a force close 1-3 times.. just keep pressing force close till theyre gone and everything is smooth sailing from there
Flash as you normally would.. and always.. always do a nandroid backup!!!
Anytime you flash.. you flash at your own risk!!
Any feedback is welcome

Id also like to thank 2fast of 2fsast Roms for pointing me in the right direction on this and for any help he's willing to give
Reserved for later

I think we just need a porting guide for ROMs, to see what we can do. I know it's not too simple that anyone can do it, but I want to try it.

Hi,
For booting any New Sense Rom just use desire boot.img with his modules n build.prop file...its enough for booting New Sense Rom..
Batter is use my boot.img file its perfect for all new Sense Rom...like AceS,SagaS,VisionS

No ive tested it on my HTC Desire CDMA device bud.. I used rom kitchen to port it to CDMA
Ok since I see where I came off the wrong way. What needs done is you need to add to the op that this truely isn't leedroid. It has the looks but nothing else. As in probably 90% of the features are not there. Mainly anything to do with the kernel itself (oc, uv and others due to using our stock kernel). It isn't no faster than our stock froyo sense builds.
What I would recommend to do since this has force close issues with out digging into it trying to fix it. Is to start with our stock build and add the same things to it.

The gsm boot image is different from the cdma. Being the board is different the kernel in the boot image will not work. So it will not boot. We are stuck using the stock boot img till source is dropped or we get a working sense kernel.
Which means your boot.img will not work.
And leedroid is just sense 1.x so it wouldn't be any different if we are using our same kernel. This thread got my hopes up so high
Has anybody even bothered to flash it?
This is what I was afraid of by his first post. So anyone that looks at this it is not leedroid. This is more so stock sense. It just has leedroid's framework and apps. The rest is our stock sense. This means no speed, overclock, undervolt or anything of that nature. Anything that deals with the kernel that is.
Now if some of the other stuff that should work with our kernel if it works or not is beyond me.
*double post...
nvm can be deleted.
So I flashed this from CM7 and I had no Data or service at all. Not sure if I could have the settings reconfigured . Seems like i may have read that somewhere.. just reporting...

[Q] Help with Kernel, Battery and ROM

Hi! I'm new here on XDA!
I have a i9020A unlocked from manufacturer and since ICS is around I am testing a few ROMs..
At the moment, I have this installed: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1397358
With Matr1x CFS v13 at the moment.
#1. Here is my battery status after 7h

Is that good or what? Had anything at all installed besides what came with the ROM.
#2. With this rom and this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363765 I cant use the BLN app from market to configure it. BLN works if I install glados or matr1x but it isnt customizable. Any ideas? Also on this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363765 there is a way to change the bootloader image?
#3. What are the today ROM + Kernel recommendation for me? Every rom I've tested so far worked nice besides some that messed up with Facebook fonts making them invisible..
Thanks a lot and sorry for noob stuff!
That battery info looks good!
Use whatever combo feels good to you personally!
Use nstools to turn on bln and customise.
Matr1x is the kernel I use myself, and nexus beam is the rom.
Yeah I used to have Beam 4.1.0 and I migrated to other because the notification statusbar toggles.. If anyone knows how to install it on nexus beam or other roms, would be nice!
what abt my other doubts? any ideas anyone?
thx!

Well you have 3 of then in the power menu and wifi is two clicks away, pull down notifications and settings! Status bar toggles are almost obsolete really.
Which doubts? Shorten it for me coz its early and I'm only half awake!
about the notification bar widgets: i just think is cleaner than using an actual widget on a screen

the BLN you told about NSTools to customize, because with the actual rom and that one of the above quote (the 1st link) i get a error on bln app about liblights not supporting bln even with matr1x or glados..so i'll try nstools!
the other question is about changing boot images, i wonder if i can change the one from the 2nd link rom.. or if there is a generic method to do it on all roms
another good stuff about the other roms is the shutdown button menu with more options
thnx

OK as for the bln app well it does that, I assure you that glados and matr1x have bln so nstools will sort that for you, don't worry about the bln control app.
Hmmm, that I can't help you with. Mainly because I don't understand fully what you wanna do and secondly I don't wanna guess in case I give bad advice!
Do you wanna change the bootloader?
I agree about the extended power menu, I really want a reboot option in nexus beam. But its a smooth rom so I'll manage with vol up and power to get to recovery!
yes i want to change the animation of boot.. the one with that ultimate rom is pretty lame (its the rom logo, i know, but i dont like it haha) i wonder if i can change to at least the stock one..

Ah yes I see!!!!! Ya you can change it! Install root explorer, file explorer, something like that and go to system/media and you will see bootanimation.zip. just copy and paste to SD card, install rom you want to use and copy that file into the system/media folder and it will overwrite the crap one!

i guess i'll reinstall beam
hello guys .
i am pretty new , a toddler , in this world of android and stuff .
so kindly excuse my 'noobivity' or ignorance if you may call , in asking this question ....
well , i was able to root my nexus s , and flashed it with many ROMs .
and right now i am using the ICS ROM by Brainmaster .
to be precise , this is what the exact name of the ROM spells -
ICS MIX A9 NS Brainmaster Tweaked v6 kwiboo_2 .
and in the process of trying out the various flavors of ROM , i discovered the VooDoo sound control and found it pretty cool .
but this ROM doesnt feature VooDoo .
i read more , and found that we can flash specific Kernels for specific features . !
now i found that the Matr1x Kernel ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1361477 ) features the VooDoo controls .
now my question is , can i flash this Kernel over my existing ROM ?
will it be safe ?
in other words , how do we go about flashing a Kernel ?
How to see whether it will be compatible with a given type of ROM ?
if any learned and more experienced user would kindly guide me and educate me more on the subject , it would be kind and highly appreciable of him/her .
thanks ...

Why should I install a custom ROM over offical version?

What are the advantages? I have official 4.0.3, and I don't usually use any of the stuff that requires rooting. I didn't even root my Nexus S yet lol.
Why custom ROM? Which one? And what features do I get?
It makes my pr0n load faster.

Costum Roms allow you to tweaks almost everything, like overclocking, over/under volting, set governators, I/O scheduler and so on, u get better performance and sometimes (depending on Rom+kernel combo) better battery life. Eerything goes cool & smoother. Just see an review about custom roms (cm9, bixie, alfonso, kang, etc) on youtube to get an idea.
If this info helped you somehow hit thanks button please.
cheers
Custom ROMs make the s3x much better with multiple orgazm.. lol..
Really, it's a sin owning a Nexus S and not rooting/installing custom ROMs. Custom ROMs offer many more features, stability, performance than stock ROM, otherwise the devs won't spend countless hours for just building another stock ROM. Once you flash/use a custom ROM, you will not go back to stock, and that's a sure thing.
Here's just a few things custom ROMs and rooting offer
* Speed
* Stability
* Endless custom mods/features
* Firewall
* Adblock
* Eyecandy themes (if the custom ROM supports themes)
* CPU overclocking/underclocking
* Privacy Guard -- prevent apps from getting unnecessary private permissions such as getting your phone number, IMEI, etc...
I know some people relate the term "jailbreaking" with "rooting", and they're afraid to root because it has a bad vibe to it. "Rooting" != "Jailbreaking". If you come from a Linux background, then you have no problem understanding what "rooting" means. If you're a Windows user, think of "rooting" as granting the "Administrator" access (not to be confused with the Android's Administrator which you can grant some apps without rooting). What can you do with Windows Administrator access/rights? Similar things can be done on the Android device if you have root access.

Do u ever think music can be better?
Gps faster cold fix?
Gaming low temp. ?
Batt.lasting longer?
Camera quick shot, nice shot?
Function fast accessing , ex. to turn on wifi hotspot, just hit one button and touch.......
Jump between rom to rom within 5 mins.... (like Pc hardisk gosh)
.
.
.
.
Which one is better ? No one can say extracly..... We can only count some good (in hundreds of other good) as CM rom, Criskelo rom, Exynos extreme rom, Miui rom ....for Ginger, and for Ics that is too early to talk.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
Besides all the features mentioned above, a custom Rom depends on each of the features you need.
One I like (as in MIUI's ROM) is CyberGR v7 the ability to skip tracks with the sound volume when phone is locked.
Also, some non-important, ability to kill activity by holding the back button, 4-way Reboot, some might have the FB sync problem fixed, etc.

If looking at all those settings options get you excited then you definitely should flash a custom ROM (AOKP in this case). If you look at those settings as a chore to have to mess with then you should just stay happy with stock.

You can find here on XDA general how to root it and how to flash custom roms and kernels, so you dont need to google it. Btw there is a good and easy step-by-step guide here: http://nexusshacks.com/nexus-s-root/how-to-root-nexus-s-or-nexus-s-4g-on-ics-or-gingerbread/ . It takes 15 or less minutes to root your SGS and install a new ROM.
Good luck
I had a Milestone awhile back and it got the last official update OTA and it really slowed down the device. Luckily there were some good rome out there, even gingerbread ones that really increased the speed of the device as well as the battery life.

honestly using a custom ROM is somenthing you want to try, you can always go back to stock if you want

I agree. Once a ROM is past beta/alpha tests, you will most likely get a better experience than stock (even though a ROM is a constant work in progress).

[Q] A little help on Clockworkmod Recovery!!

OK, I've this question that prevented me from applying this upgrade.
1) I've stock ROM ddkt1 gingerbread 2.3.6 (through one package) on my phone. Is it a RFS or EXT file system?
2) Will it be OK to flash over it? (assuming the steps are followed correctly)
3) After installing this, if things go wrong while messing with the phone in the long run, will it be possible to revert back to stock ROM?
Please clear my doubts, I'm so ecstatic about this CWM release! Cheers!
as you are on stock 2.3.6 root it first.......and install cwm from tj_style.......stock rom is rfs file system it will not change unitl you flash a custom rom which is of ext4....you wont be able to do nandroid backup using cwm on your custom rom other features work as they should.....if anything goes wrong you can revert back to stock rom using odin download any official firmware and flash it.....if you are planning to use custom roms then after flashing a custom rom do a nandroid backup then there will be no need of a stock rom.....any doubts comment i will reply asap..
Simple, clear and to the point. Just what I needed to know, thank you.
This is my first appearance on Linux based OS and there are numerous questions flying around when tweaking around so the last thing I would like to ask is, will it be able to change the EXT to RFS after flashing the original ROM?
And yes, most importantly, among the few custom build ROM's (creed,razo...etc) around here which is the best bug free ROM with stability and performance? Let's be honest here since I don't want to follow that trial and error pattern in finding the best one once again, thanks for your help!
imho, it's razodroid.
and yeah you'll go back to rfs if you flash stock rom.
Thank you @lomash, so which version of razodroid you're referring to? Will it be flashable on my said ROM?
Wait for few days version 2.2 is coming for beginners razo 1 is the best its but free

you can revert back to rfs by flashing any official firmwares i cant find a reason why you would do so.....razodroid v2 is the one with least bugs but it isnt that fast as a beast.......razodriod v1 is the fastest that ive ever used and im currently on it......but v1 comes at a cost a small music bug which is neglectable....the music stops and starts while changing from app drawer to home screen.....razodroid v2.2 is almost ready to hit the forums.... so taking these things into consideration you can either go for razodroid v1 or wait for 2.2.....in doubts comment below....

Hey guys, so recently I've been looking for resources and stuff and I found this rom called LeWa Os. It's similar to MIUI in terms of themes, customization, initial theme when you first flash it, but it's based on CM7 so it has CM features. I took the time to port it to our beloved Sensation and will do my best to fix out the remaining bugs... It's running on Android 2.3 and has awesome eyecandy + fluid performance ...
It's based on the only CM7 build that I can find for the sensation:
Code:
update-cm-7.1.0-SelfKANG1-Sensation-signed
This list shows a little of it's awesomeness, there are too many features to list...
If you press on Statusbur, softkeys will appear
Swipe up to open apps drawer
Miui like toggles in statusbar
*Oh yea* There is a task killer button in the statusbar
*Miui Like* SO many themes to customize
Included power manager app
Stylish slider to accept/reject calls
Smooth ROM!
Did I mention the charging animation!
Datamanager included in statusbar
ICS Transitions
Too many!
Bugs:
IDK, I didn't test this, so if any brave soul could test it I would appreciate that!
Installation:
Taken from the Cyanogenmod forums:
Instructions:
First time flashing CyanogenMod 7 to the HTC Sensation, or coming from another ROM?

No I haven't worked on any of the bugs yet... But this is based on alpha 10 so I think they might be fixed: Taken from the CM forums:
The current buglist:
-Recording 1080p video for a couple minutes causes a soft reboot
-Misc Browser crashes (CM bug)
-Zoom issues in Camera
Other than those (relatively) minor bugs, this rom is perfect.

I'll do my best to fix those...
this is based on cm7, so I should install the GB firmware? 3.12...
what about language....are there chinese parts?
and...is this just for 4g sensations? I have an eur version...
Can't wait to get home and flash this. 82mb? Really?

Looks cool to bad you have to down grade firmware. Get this going on cm9 and I'll try it the reason I have my phone rooted is because I wanna use the newest stuff not outdated roms that are dead.

This roms just been released. However the base is old.

I know and the cm7 thread is dead so this roms base will never be updated.
Oh okai, I'll see if I can get it working on CM9, give me some time though
EDIT: And hey I'm still working on it, don't start giving low ratings yet!

This ROM is very pleasent surprise...stick with CM7 not with CM9 because there are a lot of various cm9 editions of all flavoirs...what is needed is cm7 base ROMs.
I will give a try...for now, on Hyperdroid cm7...in the future, on Lewa certainly.
What is this roms bugs?

Good to have another Sensation chef in the kitchen!
Well after putting my mind to it, I finished my attempt at porting a CM7 rom to CM9 and now I'm scared to try it :/ (I'm a wimpy chef, I know )
So I think I'll just keep it at CM7 since no one has anymore of those roms anymore and it seems like gingerbread is more stable...
So for those who have ICS now, downgrade:

downgrade is very complicated.
root the current ICS and install recovery
Juopunubear S-OFF (require htcdev unlock and root)
downgrade firmware to 1.17
flash GB rom or run GB RUU

Alright so all of us have ICS, recovery, and s-off, so all we have to do is flash the first firmware in this post (1.17) and flash this ROM...
So on to the bugs. From my first port for the Atrix I had the following:
1. PC didn't detect phone on USB, only can charge from wall...
2. Boot animation, lock screen, and music player aren't scaled...
3. SD manager fcs... (It's a lame version of miui file manager)
1. It shouldn't do that on this ROM, but if it does I'll look into it and see if my friend can help me fix it like he helped on the Atrix...
2. So I'll work on scaling the the boot ani, and lock screen, and I'll just replace the music plaer...
3. Just remove it and replace with the actual miui file manager...
