Mozilla just put out an alpha release of the Firefox Mobile browser for Android:
blog (dot) mozilla (dot) com/blog/2010/08/27/fennec-alpha-released-for-android-and-nokia-n900/
There's an unfortunate quirk with their download, which tries to pick the right version to present, making it hard to download the apk directly. I'm on a Samsung Captivate, so I needed to use the phone to suck down the apk, but then pull it over to my computer to install. Detailed here:
droidhacks (dot) com/2010/08/installing-firefox-mobile-on-a-samsung-captivate/
They must have fixed it. I downloaded from phone and installed it. Its very slow on my captivate even with lag fix...

Awesome, the plugins and sliding interface are heaps of fun. Can't wait 'til this is out of alpha, have been envious of it on a friend's N900 for some time.
Posted from my HD2 via XDA app.
no support for htc hero yet... (GSM)
Is it just me or is it rather slow? First time I tried to load Autoblog.com it stopped responding, second time it took forever to load. Other sites werent as snappy as the stock browser either?
I'm on a Droid, 2.2. I really want to like it but wth
I thought I heard a while back that they were ditching the mobile browser, and just going with Firefox Home?
Anyone got the APK it won't download for me. Thanks
in htc hero, android 2.1 villainROM not run.
Install is 28mb(!) even though apk is only 11mb.
App won't launch on my G1 with CM6 RC1.
Thanks, for shearing the link droidhacks, have tested the browser app a litle bitt but I think I still gonna use det default Webkit and Dolpin HD 2 for a while before Ì change
well. It takes me more than 10 minutes to install, but it doesn't work at all. #hero
Took forever to install, large install, and didn't work at all. Droid eris running cyanotazz v1.0

Downloaded very quickly to mu pulse mini but wouldn't load :-(
just a heads up......
it seems that if you have the mobile view un-checked in the browser settings it will try to download the mamo version.
or was it just me having problems downloading it.

downloaded with dolphin hd 2 in android mode...it downloads the apk that way. If I was in desktop mode, it kept downloading an install file. Works fairly quick on my EVO! Just starting to test.

Don't be, it's a disaster. I come from N900 (got the galaxy S) and firefox was simply unusably slow. I'm sorry to hear things haven't changed.
Although I miss the real multitasking and the quick switching among web pages, galaxy makes the N900 look like an unfinished product in every single aspect; starting with the unusably slow app manager to Nokia refusing to support Flash 10.1 or MeeGo on it and to the build quality issues I encountered (blue haze on pictures, dead pixels, light leakage and some layer of the screen not being fixed properly and making a clicking sound from time to time.
Firefox feels sluggish even on my 3GHZ pc. I'd rather improvements&addons being made for the default browser simce my trust in firefox's potential is... well... limited.
Yea using stock galaxy s and the latest build of fennec is very unstable D:
didn't ran on Legend, first time it said not enough memory, after mem cleaning this app not ran at all.
I just updated Opera to the last version and now it crashes as soon as I open it.
Anybody else ?

me too.I reinstall to old backup.
Crashes for me as well.
It is crashing for me too. I also just restored the last version from my Titanium Backups. I am very pissed at the people over at Opera though. I clicked on the "E-mail developer" link that is on the Opera Mobile page in the Android Market and sent them them an e-mail letting them know that the new release was crashing (also explaining exactly how it was crashing). I received a reply back telling me that they were rejecting my e-mail because I was not a premium (paid) user and therefore could not submit an e-mail to them. This is insanity! They broke it with their new release and users whether they are premium users or not should be able to notify them that there is a problem with the new release. As far as I am concerned, they have blown it with me. Time to switch to Dolphin. Hopefully more people will do the same. I understand the whole premium support concept and do not have an issue with that type of support model as long as non-premium users still have an outlet to report bugs or issues with the software. They need to learn a lesson here.

Got the same mail after contacting the official Opera support address.
But I still reported the problem in the dedicated Opera Mobile for Android bug report form where they sent me. After that I got a mail from another support address I could contact and write my issue more detailed. And today I got anther mail that asked me to record a log with alogcat pro and send it so they could see the problem.
Not that bad support in my opinion, I hope it will be fixed soon.
the same me yesterday, now i'm using dolphin.
Working now
I do not know if they published a new version, but yesterday I downloaded it again and is working fine. One thing I noticed is that the Opera splash page at startup now shows for a lot less time.

Hm, the update didn't solve the problem for me.
None of what I'll tell you make sense but try this :
-go to manage application -opera mobile and clear data - force stop and uninstall opera
- if you have any other browser make sure that none of them is selected as the default browser
- install Ninesky Browser ( this really makes no sense)
- browse a couple of pages with it
-turn your tablet off and then on again
- install opera mobile again
- reply to my post telling me that my suggestion was pure BS

Very strange. But I even tried this, no success of course.
But you said turn turn your tablet off and then ln again - did you have the problem on your tablet and solved it that way)? On my tablet (Transformer, still running Android 3.2.1, Opera works great, the black scree only occurs on my Defy running Android 4.0.3.
I would not know what I exactly did to end up with a working opera. But I know for sure that I uninstalled it and reinstalled it a couple of times. It was still not working and for this reason I went back to dolphin hd and eventually to that Ninesky Browser. A couple of days later I gave it a try again (could not stand any other browser) and voilà, it installed and worked flawlessly. That's why I even thought that maybe a new version came up.
EDIT : it's official, it was Opera fault and a new version was indeed published few days later. Version 11.5.5 is on the market since February 1st clearly stating that it fixes problems with Opera crashing at start on the galaxy tab 7.0 and galaxy tab 7.7
It solve in new release.
It's been rumored for some time, but now it's finally here -- Google Chrome has landed on Android. Android 4.0 phone and tablet owners in selected countries can now grab a beta version of Chrome from the Android Market.
Chrome for Android expands on the stock ICS browser with faster performance and speed-boosting features like the ability to pre-load web pages, and a brand new tabbing interface. Tabs are now handled through a card-like interface, allowing you to flip between open pages, seeing more of the sites you've got open. Familiar features from the ICS browser, including incognito mode, and bookmark sync, have made it across to Chrome for Android too.
There's also a big focus on maintaining a consistent browsing experience across multiple devices, so you can send pages between desktop Chrome and mobile Chrome right from the menu button. We'll be diving further into Chrome for Android in a our hands-on feature. In the meantime, we've got screenshots, an official Google video and the Market link after the break. Note that you'll need an Ice Cream Sandwich phone or tablet, and live in the U.S., Canada, UK, France, Germany, Spain, Australia, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Argentina or Brazil to use it.

downloading now.......will give feedback after giving it a good run out through out the day
edit: but then again maybe not. 3 fc already, scrolling either works really well or it starts to shake like mad.
its fast and i like the layout and transitions when it works though - not sure if my miui ics rom could cause any of the issues but its not really useable at this point.
By default it's only for ICS so that market won't even show it on HC or less.
Has anyone tried to side load it on Honeycomb?
I tried, no go.
Eureka it works!
Fairly stable for me. The only crash I had was with something like 7-8 tabs open (all XDA Prime forums, plus a few chrome blogs, LOL! I like it. A LOT! And typically I am hard to please, especially where browsers are concerned. There are way to many Android browsers out there that are acceptable, but not outstanding. Each has their own little tweaks and claim to fame, but under the hood they are ridiculousy similar. Let's see, I have had on my Prime, at one point or another:
Stock. Works well. So well it bores me, LOL
ICS+ A nice set of enhancements. I use it more than the stock webkit browser
Dolphin and Dolphin HD - I like, don't love it. A bit TOO slick, and some things frustrate me. It will be better when the HD catches up to the small screen version, I think
Opera Mini and Opera Mobile - What can I say. 2 solid browsers here. Mobile is a keeper. [
boat browser - Not imopressed, other than speed, it was buggy. removed.
Skyfire - I LOVED this one on my phone in early releases it was amazing. When Skyfire decided t charge me to see flash, I decided to cut them lose. Too many alternatives. It's not THAT great.
Firefox - a HUGE let down, but everyone expected magic here. Didn't materialize.
Maxthon. Very cool new browser.Jury still out on this one.
That's right off the top of my head.
Anyone know how to make the tab "Stack" appear in chrome, or is that only in the phone version, because we have the real estate to see the tabs. If so I am disappointed. That was chromes one big trick pony, and I was excited to try it. So far I can't see the button in top left to enable them, just a new tab button. Anyone?

good review.. I pretty much agree with all of it.
but I do use Maxthon a bit.. I am just comfortable with it..
and for some reason it opens pages a bit faster for me as I use VPN a lot out of here (China)
I've been running Chrome on my Nexus S for a few days now. It's amazing. Makes me wish I had ICS on my TF101. Fast, smooth, great interface. Massively better than the stock browser.
Google has basically made it official that, once it's mature, Chrome will be replacing the stock Android browser - but apparently only for devices running 4.0+. (see here)

So far, Chrome beta has been awesome for me on my TF101. I really like the tabbing system and the fact that all of my bookmarks are right there where I need them.

Apparently in Sense 4.0, whether by accident or by design (I seriously hope it's the former...), HTC broke associating links with apps. I thought this issue was big enough to warrant its own thread.
The main use for this was clicking YouTube links to open in the YouTube app.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qf_hdFSnOEI
Instead, ALL HTML links open in the browser. I am willing to bet Play Store app linksdo the same.
Anyone else really frustrated with this? Is there a way to fix this short of installing a custom ROM
Edit: I want to reiterate that clearing browser defaults doesn't help

Play store links do open in the browser. I've only been back on Android for a couple days after a 5 month iPhone stint so I didn't think anything of it at the time, but now that you bring this up I am retroactively annoyed.
Thought it was just me. Switching launchers doesn't help either. At the very least we should get to choose how links are handled.
I am annoyed by this as well. Hopefully an update will fix this and at least give us the old option list back. At least the youtube page works most of the time.
I need to stop coming to general section...I am seeing more and more bugs...which I never cared but after reading them suddenly I feel a burn in my pocket lol
What gets me mad is youtube links not opening the app. Not only sense 4, but my last phone (Vivid 4.0 Sense 3.6) had the same issue

Wasn't there a legal battle against apple where apple sued HTC for opening appropriate based on the nature of text for example opening the dialer when one clicks in the phone number on a website?
Apple won this case right?
Does this have to do something with this?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Don't think so because clicking a phone number on a web page just brought up the dialer for me
Have you tried "clear defaults" for the stock browser inside the app settings menu? I know I started getting prompted for links through Friendstream and was able to default to Chrome once I did this.

I tried clearing defaults for both Chrome and the stock browser (Internet). It still just defaults to whichever I had last had set as default.
what if you 'press + hold' the link does it give you a coice on what to open it with?
Vote now!
I hate Chrome on mobile. It is next to useless and with it being available on the play store I no longer want to offer it at all in CROMI going forward.
Give me a good reason to keep supporting it otherwise it goes!
As I'm on your side, I will not give you any reason to incorporate it any longer. I sometimes use it, but I'd just as happily use the stock browser (right after install_ or Firefox (which is my current 'standard' browser, if there is anything like that to be found on Android). Most have speed issues, anyway.
Again: I vote for let it out.
EDIT: With Titanium Backup being incorporated into your excellent ROM, one can backup and re-install without needing moile data access anyway, so, as far as I'm concerned, there's a very valid line of reasoning against incorporating anything other than TB.
I personally use Chrome on all my devices- phone, tablet, PC, laptop, etc, and having all of my bookmarks and tabs is really convienent. And also just love how it looks!
Obviously, it doesn't really matter if you include it because you can just download off the play store but it's just one less thing we need to download
Anyways keep up the great work sdbags!

I think it will sneak into 3.1 (in fact I know it will as its sitting there looking ugly, staring at me right now ) but from then on it will disappear as an install option. I've been using it for the last hour and it is like working in treacle even with Browser2Ram installed. It does render pages nicely but there is no full screen option, typing is extremely laggy and dragging pages around is painful. The stock browser is 10000000% slicker and a pleasure to use in comparison. And it has more options.
Nail
Coffin
Final.
Vote for no chrome.
BTW, I think the tab is that the previous user talking about is the "Bookmarks Toolbar" where all the bookmarks shown on the tool bars, it's nice and convinience, but stills not worth to keep Chrome.
I use Chrome on all my devices for the sync abilities. While other browsers sync, they don't sync as comprehensively as Chrome. I also have 2 chromebooks, where it's the only option I have. Having said that, I can always install it like every other app I install.
Is there anything you tweak for the Chrome install?
The tab sync is that if you have a tab open on one device, you can go to another device and have it open the same tab - very useful when browsing on your phone and then deciding to switch to a larger screen, etc.

Thanks for clarifying. It's still in the next release but as a data app. Going forward it will then be saved and not disturbed.
chrome
I prefer chrome than stock.. I wouldn't mind downloading from the play store.
I prefer using Dolphin over Chrome, Chrome seems to have an issue downloading files Dolphin does it perfect every time because it has its own download app.
Asus Transformer Infinity running CleanRom 3.0.4
Personally, I don't use Chrome. Stock browser works well for me, especially with the tweaks.
I say the smaller the rom size the faster I can download and install it. Stay true to objective of a clean rom and let users add what they need from the Play Store.
I do use the Google apps and a few of the others. TB was giving me issues by not letting me use my upgraded key when installed from the rom so I had to skip it and download it from play store.

Yeah I've noticed that with tibu on the last few updates - I think it does a check. But I am leaving it in due to if you ever do a full wipe it's handy to be able to recover apps especially if you don't have internet available. It saved me a couple of times recently when in Japan.

It does check if the Pro license is legit -- you can sometimes (most of the times) keep it active when you select "Auto-... TiBu settings" or something along those lines from the Preferences. It should automatically carry over the license then, at least until you have an internet connection (that's when the first actual check is made). (I had to move the folder last time, so that no longer worked. That was a definite PITA.)
