Fennec (Firefox Mobile) alpha release! - Android Apps and Games

Mozilla just put out an alpha release of the Firefox Mobile browser for Android:
blog (dot) mozilla (dot) com/blog/2010/08/27/fennec-alpha-released-for-android-and-nokia-n900/
There's an unfortunate quirk with their download, which tries to pick the right version to present, making it hard to download the apk directly. I'm on a Samsung Captivate, so I needed to use the phone to suck down the apk, but then pull it over to my computer to install. Detailed here:
droidhacks (dot) com/2010/08/installing-firefox-mobile-on-a-samsung-captivate/

They must have fixed it. I downloaded from phone and installed it. Its very slow on my captivate even with lag fix...

Awesome, the plugins and sliding interface are heaps of fun. Can't wait 'til this is out of alpha, have been envious of it on a friend's N900 for some time.
Posted from my HD2 via XDA app.

no support for htc hero yet... (GSM)

Is it just me or is it rather slow? First time I tried to load Autoblog.com it stopped responding, second time it took forever to load. Other sites werent as snappy as the stock browser either?
I'm on a Droid, 2.2. I really want to like it but wth

I thought I heard a while back that they were ditching the mobile browser, and just going with Firefox Home?

Anyone got the APK it won't download for me. Thanks

in htc hero, android 2.1 villainROM not run.

Install is 28mb(!) even though apk is only 11mb.
App won't launch on my G1 with CM6 RC1.

Thanks, for shearing the link droidhacks, have tested the browser app a litle bitt but I think I still gonna use det default Webkit and Dolpin HD 2 for a while before Ì change

well. It takes me more than 10 minutes to install, but it doesn't work at all. #hero

Took forever to install, large install, and didn't work at all. Droid eris running cyanotazz v1.0

Downloaded very quickly to mu pulse mini but wouldn't load :-(

just a heads up......
it seems that if you have the mobile view un-checked in the browser settings it will try to download the mamo version.
or was it just me having problems downloading it.

downloaded with dolphin hd 2 in android mode...it downloads the apk that way. If I was in desktop mode, it kept downloading an install file. Works fairly quick on my EVO! Just starting to test.

Don't be, it's a disaster. I come from N900 (got the galaxy S) and firefox was simply unusably slow. I'm sorry to hear things haven't changed.
Although I miss the real multitasking and the quick switching among web pages, galaxy makes the N900 look like an unfinished product in every single aspect; starting with the unusably slow app manager to Nokia refusing to support Flash 10.1 or MeeGo on it and to the build quality issues I encountered (blue haze on pictures, dead pixels, light leakage and some layer of the screen not being fixed properly and making a clicking sound from time to time.
Firefox feels sluggish even on my 3GHZ pc. I'd rather improvements&addons being made for the default browser simce my trust in firefox's potential is... well... limited.

Yea using stock galaxy s and the latest build of fennec is very unstable D:

didn't ran on Legend, first time it said not enough memory, after mem cleaning this app not ran at all.

lol

It's stuck on the "Installing" screen. =\
dude, I want that background from the webpage. Anyone seen that around the net?
just like google earth. installs, goes to black screen, almost starts, then closes

yeah, just read "This build requires Android 2.0 or above, and likely an OpenGL ES 2.0 capable device."
Anyone with a nexus/droid test this and can explain the openGL necessities of the browser?
Installed fine. Comes up for two seconds, then closes.. even with autokiller set to minimum.
Unfortunately the size is a turn off for this browser. Hopefully future builds will get smaller.

Same here. Would be nice to hear if anyone has gotten it working on a 2.1 rom yet
Currently running DC 2.06
both fennec and skyfire feel bulky & slow compared to opera mini.
Installed on toast OC, started up, then crashed when it tried loading the start page. this prolly has to do with OpenGL 2.0
I just want weave browser sync to work so i can have all my bookmarks, tabs and passwords synced between my my desktop, laptop, workstation, and cellphone.
https://mozillalabs.com/weave/
(choose experimental version for mobile, it works for android supposedly)
Unfortunatley the browser just closes itself out
The previous release was the first thing I tried after using apps2sd and it worked about as good as the posts here.
Same thing here on my rooted G2 Touch running Legendroid :-(
Opens, shows about:firstrun but closes before any content shows.
:-(
Same issue on my Hero running 2.1.

[APPS] Firefox for Android-is it good?

Anyone else using Firefox fr android? I installed the latest version, and to b honest I'm not tht impressed.I still feel that the stock browser is better.
Does anyone feel Firefox is faster?
The interface and the way u can go back, and switch between tabs is cool.

It has a way to go but remember it's still in alpha. A good Firefox could be a game changer as far as mobile browsing.

A newer beta version is out which takes only 17mb instead of previous 43mb.. Try installing that..
Opera Mobile for Android will be out in a few days, that for sure will be better option
Really?can't wait to try the opera.it might b good.wonder whthr Google will ever think of a mobile chrome. The current stock browser isn't chrome right?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Firefox Mobile its taking only 5.56 MB of internal space after sending most of it to SD. Hey, that's better than Google Earth at least The only reason why I'll continue to hold on to the default browser is because it is the only one so far that handles text reflow properly. By proper, I mean that it resizes the text to a legible size and then squeezes it all into a single column the width of the display.
Sent from my Nexus One using Tapatalk
I used the new version last night and I didn't like it. The default UAstring was set to desktop so I had to install a user agent (phony). With phony installed i was able to select the agent and the experience was much better...but not better than HD Dolphin Browser.
Another option to explore would be 'MIUI Browser' it's awesome and it was just translated to English.
BTW 'phony' is a add-on. Inside of Firefox ->Settings-> Browse all add-ons-> type "phony" -> Download Now.
Agents under phony:
- Default
- Iphone
- Android
- Desktop Firefox
- Microsoft IE
I'm using an EVO
MIUM ROM 10.29
SNAP 7.6 kernel
Hope this helps.
Mi feelings no faster no flash 4 plugins
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
yeah. the only thing i like about this browser is sync...
that's it.
And i'm not switcing to chrome.
Just tried beta 2 on a Galaxy Tab. I like the UI, and the page rendering is fine, but the thing takes about 4s to start up, and has no support for Flash plugin.
Not ready yet.
Firefox allows you to sync bookmark with your pc, it's a great features.
Too bad, the browser is that slow
I tried it out but I don't like the delay it takes for the text to become clear when zooming in.
It also takes more than 5 seconds to load up.
I also don't like the tabs being on the side, compared to the Default browser that has pinch to switch between tabs.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
It still doesnt have flash, I dont use Firefox so IDC about sync, still pretty slow, file size still huge compared to other browsers, still feels slow to my standard browser(xScope) and it loads pages with a computer userID which makes the fonts look horrendous, It also has its own highlighting system which is weird. I'm always scrolling into the side bars. Still its in alpha and the fact that it has plugins makes it amazing by itself, and for anyone who tried the first release of fennec when compared to the latest release of Firefox mobile knows the huge improvements they have made, hopefully the development will move to the right direction.
Well, looks bad as I expected. Firefrox was never good in innovation, they are only good in imitating other browsers. As the desktop version most features are "stolen" from other browsers like opera. So I will wait for opera mobile, but still the desire stock browser is good enough for almost everything.
try installed it yesterday and i feel it kindda slow..
also make my x10i laggy..
Dolphin Browser HD much better than Firefox.
I assume it doesn't work with a CDMA Hero... It was not shown on the supported list of the experimental ARMv6 nightly builds (about 2 links away from the Firefox Mobile download page)
Sent from my CDMA Hero running Cyanogen Mod using XDA APP
1-start up time is slow because firefox mobile doesn't use the built in webkit engine it uses its own so it has to load its libraries up every time it starts because of the way google makes third party libraries load or some such. It will most likely never start up as fast as webkit based browsers on android.
2. It IS faster than any webkit browser on android which includes dolphin hd etc. This has been proven in benchmarks.
3. Its because of the extra libraries it needs that its size is as large as it is there is no way around the fact that it will be bigger than all the other browsers. They don't use their own rendering engine.
4.It does not include flash support yet which i agree sucks but supposedly they are working with adobe on this.
Opera Mobile i believe does also use its own rendering engine which will make it firefox mobiles main competition.
It isn't as clean or fault-free as the stock browser (at least for my Epic). It is in early stages, and it has to be downloaded straight from Mozilla's website, as the market is flooded with outrageously misleading applications adorned the Firefox logo. I use it once in a while, but when I select the option to use Firefox as a browser after, say, clicking a link in an email, it fails to load completely and sticks on a blank, dark screen.
I am going to keep it, though. It's a nice alternative, although not much different.

[Q] Fire Fox on Sensation

Does anyone use Fire Fox web browser on Sensation? If so do you know if we can get Greasemonkey installed? Or something that can run a user script file?
Thanks
I had Firefox beta 6 I believe (or whatever the latest one is) and I didn't even keep it long enough to figure out if you can run those. I really prefer stock browser over that slow junk.
Just my opinion though
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using Tapatalk
I also use mobile firefox. I have both 5 and 6 Beta installed. AFAIK Greasemoney is currently only available as a Desktop plug in.
I am not sure what others will do the job for you, but you can try searching their mobile plug in library.
To do this in FF:
-Swipe the entire page left
-Tap the gear icon on the bottom right (this will bring up a new screen)
-Tap the puzzle icon on the top to select the plugins page
-On the plugin page there will be a search box below your installed plugins.
Hope this helps.

I find Firefox quite unusable on the Sensation, a couple of open tabs is sufficient to cause Sense to shut down, requiring a restart when you exit the browser. Thats partly the Sensation's fault because of its low free RAM, and partly Firefox's fault for being bloatware. Frustrating, since I like Firefox in my SGSII and Galaxy Tab 10.1, which can cope with it despite its resource-hunger.
i actually havent had any issues with firefox, but i prefer the stock browser...
the best part about firefox on android is saving entire webpages as pdf's!
that, and syncing with your desktop. that was a clever idea
Try to use Dolphin Browser HD.
Would a plug in cound as a .JS file? As the site I'm playing needs this user script to have it more customizable. I've had no problems with FF or the sock browser, I've found that FF loads faster on some pages than the stock, but the stock just seems more simple to use.
Thanks again guys
Or if someoen has worked on a mobile version of "greasemonkey" ?
I recommend dolphin mini
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using Tapatalk
opera mobile... hardware accelerated pinch and scroll = win.
I used FireFox for a bit totally not useable I've now switched to opera and do far so good
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA App
i have firefox... sadly firefox doesnt support alot of things at the moment like flash, etc... i find dolphin hd to be the best browser by far for android... and once firefox catches up i will probably switch back over.... i think firefox has only realised the mass market of android in terms of their browser use as many are firefox desktop users... in time features will be implemented
I got flash to show up on Mobileburn with Firefox but it was kind of unstable and crashed..
Anyway Firefox uses less ram than any other browser (besides stock I think) and runs smoothly on my Sensation 4G. The Sense launcher is getting pushed out of the memory because it stinks. It happens with Dolphin, Opera Mobile and etc.

Google Chrome browser arrives on Android

The latest step in bringing Google-based unification has arrived. The Chrome browser is here on Android. This beta version is currently only available for that elite crowd of ICS phones and tablets and like its desktop progenitor, the synced settings and bookmarks are all in tow. Expect to see a new, more natural mobile view of the tab system. It'll also remember what you were last looking at on your desktop Chrome browser, and sync it across to your mobile device -- it's like Kindle or iBook's bookmarking system, but for the web. Your autocorrect content from the desktop is similarly synced. Expect to see the reappearance of link previews, something you may recall from the results of any Google searches, offering a brief thumbnail of a link's destination. We're giving it a good play-around right now, but while we get our first impression up, check the quick intro video after the break.
dont think we can get it on the note yet, but will be able to use it when they release the ICS
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVjw7n_U37A&feature=player_embedded
It works just fine with the CM9 alpha build of ICS. Just FYI.
What is up with Adobe though? I thought Apple wanted to kill Flash, but it turns out Adobe hates themselves too.
happy firefoxian

May I ask how did you get to work?
The problem is when I choose to "open in new tab"I can not go to the new tab, it freezes and crashes every time..
Another user also said the same thing in the CM9 thread..
Thanks in advance

I've got the same problem... It seems like it would be ROM related, I saw a comment on Market from an HTC Desire user that complained about choppy performance but at least it seemed to run on that phone.
I would be really thankful if anyone managed to figure out and/or fix the problem! (if it is not ROM related)

(Links)Google Chrome Beta Android 4.0 devices

It's been rumored for some time, but now it's finally here -- Google Chrome has landed on Android. Android 4.0 phone and tablet owners in selected countries can now grab a beta version of Chrome from the Android Market.
Chrome for Android expands on the stock ICS browser with faster performance and speed-boosting features like the ability to pre-load web pages, and a brand new tabbing interface. Tabs are now handled through a card-like interface, allowing you to flip between open pages, seeing more of the sites you've got open. Familiar features from the ICS browser, including incognito mode, and bookmark sync, have made it across to Chrome for Android too.
There's also a big focus on maintaining a consistent browsing experience across multiple devices, so you can send pages between desktop Chrome and mobile Chrome right from the menu button. We'll be diving further into Chrome for Android in a our hands-on feature. In the meantime, we've got screenshots, an official Google video and the Market link after the break. Note that you'll need an Ice Cream Sandwich phone or tablet, and live in the U.S., Canada, UK, France, Germany, Spain, Australia, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Argentina or Brazil to use it.

edit: but then again maybe not. 3 fc already, scrolling either works really well or it starts to shake like mad.
its fast and i like the layout and transitions when it works though - not sure if my miui ics rom could cause any of the issues but its not really useable at this point.
By default it's only for ICS so that market won't even show it on HC or less.
Has anyone tried to side load it on Honeycomb?
I tried, no go.
Eureka it works!
Fairly stable for me. The only crash I had was with something like 7-8 tabs open (all XDA Prime forums, plus a few chrome blogs, LOL! I like it. A LOT! And typically I am hard to please, especially where browsers are concerned. There are way to many Android browsers out there that are acceptable, but not outstanding. Each has their own little tweaks and claim to fame, but under the hood they are ridiculousy similar. Let's see, I have had on my Prime, at one point or another:
Stock. Works well. So well it bores me, LOL
ICS+ A nice set of enhancements. I use it more than the stock webkit browser
Dolphin and Dolphin HD - I like, don't love it. A bit TOO slick, and some things frustrate me. It will be better when the HD catches up to the small screen version, I think
Opera Mini and Opera Mobile - What can I say. 2 solid browsers here. Mobile is a keeper. [
boat browser - Not imopressed, other than speed, it was buggy. removed.
Skyfire - I LOVED this one on my phone in early releases it was amazing. When Skyfire decided t charge me to see flash, I decided to cut them lose. Too many alternatives. It's not THAT great.
Firefox - a HUGE let down, but everyone expected magic here. Didn't materialize.
Maxthon. Very cool new browser.Jury still out on this one.
That's right off the top of my head.
Anyone know how to make the tab "Stack" appear in chrome, or is that only in the phone version, because we have the real estate to see the tabs. If so I am disappointed. That was chromes one big trick pony, and I was excited to try it. So far I can't see the button in top left to enable them, just a new tab button. Anyone?

I've been running Chrome on my Nexus S for a few days now. It's amazing. Makes me wish I had ICS on my TF101. Fast, smooth, great interface. Massively better than the stock browser.
Google has basically made it official that, once it's mature, Chrome will be replacing the stock Android browser - but apparently only for devices running 4.0+. (see here)
