Should Chrome stay in CROMI or just be a play store app? - Asus Transformer TF700

Vote now!
I hate Chrome on mobile. It is next to useless and with it being available on the play store I no longer want to offer it at all in CROMI going forward.
Give me a good reason to keep supporting it otherwise it goes!

As I'm on your side, I will not give you any reason to incorporate it any longer. I sometimes use it, but I'd just as happily use the stock browser (right after install_ or Firefox (which is my current 'standard' browser, if there is anything like that to be found on Android). Most have speed issues, anyway.
Again: I vote for let it out.
EDIT: With Titanium Backup being incorporated into your excellent ROM, one can backup and re-install without needing moile data access anyway, so, as far as I'm concerned, there's a very valid line of reasoning against incorporating anything other than TB.

I personally use Chrome on all my devices- phone, tablet, PC, laptop, etc, and having all of my bookmarks and tabs is really convienent. And also just love how it looks!
Obviously, it doesn't really matter if you include it because you can just download off the play store but it's just one less thing we need to download
Anyways keep up the great work sdbags!

Not a fan of chrome here.
I wouldn't miss it.

You do know the stock browser also syncs your chrome bookmarks by default on CROMI? Not sure what you mean about tabs?

I think it will sneak into 3.1 (in fact I know it will as its sitting there looking ugly, staring at me right now ) but from then on it will disappear as an install option. I've been using it for the last hour and it is like working in treacle even with Browser2Ram installed. It does render pages nicely but there is no full screen option, typing is extremely laggy and dragging pages around is painful. The stock browser is 10000000% slicker and a pleasure to use in comparison. And it has more options.
Nail
Coffin
Final.

Vote for no chrome.
BTW, I think the tab is that the previous user talking about is the "Bookmarks Toolbar" where all the bookmarks shown on the tool bars, it's nice and convinience, but stills not worth to keep Chrome.

I use Chrome on all my devices for the sync abilities. While other browsers sync, they don't sync as comprehensively as Chrome. I also have 2 chromebooks, where it's the only option I have. Having said that, I can always install it like every other app I install.
Is there anything you tweak for the Chrome install?
The tab sync is that if you have a tab open on one device, you can go to another device and have it open the same tab - very useful when browsing on your phone and then deciding to switch to a larger screen, etc.

Thanks for clarifying. It's still in the next release but as a data app. Going forward it will then be saved and not disturbed.

chrome
I prefer chrome than stock.. I wouldn't mind downloading from the play store.

I prefer using Dolphin over Chrome, Chrome seems to have an issue downloading files Dolphin does it perfect every time because it has its own download app.
Asus Transformer Infinity running CleanRom 3.0.4

Personally, I don't use Chrome. Stock browser works well for me, especially with the tweaks.
I say the smaller the rom size the faster I can download and install it. Stay true to objective of a clean rom and let users add what they need from the Play Store.
I do use the Google apps and a few of the others. TB was giving me issues by not letting me use my upgraded key when installed from the rom so I had to skip it and download it from play store.

Yeah I've noticed that with tibu on the last few updates - I think it does a check. But I am leaving it in due to if you ever do a full wipe it's handy to be able to recover apps especially if you don't have internet available. It saved me a couple of times recently when in Japan.

It does check if the Pro license is legit -- you can sometimes (most of the times) keep it active when you select "Auto-... TiBu settings" or something along those lines from the Preferences. It should automatically carry over the license then, at least until you have an internet connection (that's when the first actual check is made). (I had to move the folder last time, so that no longer worked. That was a definite PITA.)

Anyone else really starting to hate their tf?

Am I the only one starting to hate their tf? I am finding mine more and more useless for web browsing each day. I figure web browsing would be the one aspect they perfect if none else! Examples from tonight.
I try to send a friend a message on facebook.com and when I finally get the slow tf to the new message screen, I click paste and the browser crashes!
In gmail.com I was trying to setup mail forwarding and the keyboard refused to appear on the screen even though my text box was open with a blinking cursor!
Trying to click on various links on web sites it often hits the wrong link.
Trying to watch any videos or flash in the browser is usually uselessly slow.
Overall loading and rendering of pages takes a very long time, especially when compared to a normal computer... shoot, my htc evo loads pages faster!
Using forums utterly sucks, typing is really delayed and scrolling around the page is painfully slow as I have to watch square after square render
Half the time when typing it misses a key then the backspace refuses to work!
Ahhhh... come on Google! Wtf! As much as I hate to say it, I am starting to see why ppl pay more for the ipad2, it usually just works smooth and quick!
I gotta ask what rom your running. I have some glitches now and again but overall mine is snappy. MAybe its time for a cache clearing?
A few of the problems you mention can be solved by using apps instead of going through the browser every time. It's not always the fault of Google that web pages run slow; web developers are notoriously lazy when it comes to optimization for mobile devices like phones and tablets. They're not desktop or laptop replacements, therefore you can't expect the same performance.
The best thing you can do for speed and stability is to use apps more often than the browser. For instance, use the Facebook Messenger app for sending Facebook messages, and FriendMe for all other Facebook tasks. For forum browsing, try using Tapatalk. Other than that, always make sure you are running the most current firmware and plugins.
Like just now, I tried to reply to this thread and nothing would type in the box, just a blinky cursor, I wait a few seconds and still nothing then I type a bunch of garbage and it all shows up! But of course then backspace wouldn't work.. its like hard work just to reply to this thread.
I am using the latest prime rom. I've used nothing but prime mostly and I usually wipe everything and the caches for each new release just to be safe... and I can understand about using different apps but I shouldn't need a separate app for everything, I mean my android phone plays flash videos smoother.. and the facebook apps! Suck for the most part when compared to the site (I know that sentence was messed up but again, backspace wouldn't work for me to fix it!)
Very disappointed.. I love my android evo and have always backed android but this really stinks... I bought the tablet to relax and browse the net, it seems to just have made more work and aggrovation for me..
Have you tried different browser? I use Opera browser and it works pretty good. dolphin HD works pretty well too. Dice Player and/or MX video players? lastest flash version perhaps? I am using Prime 1.8.4, no complain here as far as software go.
i've always used tapatalk to post in this forum, so i never actually tried to use the website to do so.
so i decided to do this via stock browser. my review: it's not perfect, there's a half-second delay to get it going, but for the most part, it's perfectly useable.
i even realized i wasn't even doing the about:debug trick. once i did it improved mildly. i do have flash enabled 100%, and i'm currently staring at a bestbuy flash ad.
overall though, it'd say it's quite useable, not perfect, but not as bad as the OP's case. backspace work fine.

A few people have had problems with the latest prime rom such as slow wifi and browser problems. But like others said, use a different browser such as opera mini.
My suggestion would be to try the revolver rom.
+1 for Opera Browser. I am running Revolver rom and using Opera and it is fast as f%$k with the blockiness 99% gone. Don't know if it is the rom, which I think is faster than prime, or Opera but I am loving my tf more every day.

The only Opera I have used is the mobile tablet one. I may have several tabs open at the same time..I hate having to click on the way you display all the tabs (thumbnails) select a tab...takes a double click or hard to close one. I haven't checked for blockiness being gone since the last update. I thought it was gone in Dolphin HD at first...today it seems back. i hate that about my wifes ipad...not being able to draw or refresh the entire web page at once ..so I can scroll down it properly....
I mostly use Dolphin HD. It doesn't force close or crash any more than Opera does for me.
Yes web browsing does leave something to be desired on the TF. Strangely enough using the same browser on my phone I don't discover the same problems. My conclusion? HC leaves something to be desired... hopefully with ICS things will get better.
Has any of you tried Dolphin Pad? It's a beta version of Dolphin optimized for tablets and works quite better than Dolphin HD.
Oh wait, don't let me post a link because of my post count, ****. Just search for it in the market. It's called "Dolphin for Pad V1.0 Beta"
I have no problems with browsing using dolphin pad or opera. Fast as hell on the revolver ROM. tf was a great investment.

I use the stock browser and I don't have any problems at all with it. When I first got my tf I was able to sync my bookmarks so that every machine I use has the same set - this would be worth a lot of inconvenience as I have a lot of work material in my bookmarks. The tf is not as fast as my desktop but then it wouldn't be would it? It's slower than my netbook's browser but then the touchscreen is easier to use than the trackpad. I don't recognise any of the OP's problems and I've never used any other browser.
I do feel for you, I have had some isues as well. But once i rooted, flashed and yes oc'd I have had alot less issues. I still get some wierd lag and force close apps about once a day but its nothing hat i cant live with, well excpet for the gun bro's lag. Its become unplayable.
I would try the suggestions to use apps and manage your programs a bit better. Clear the cache, check your perms see how it runs then
I love my TF more and more every day, its just getting better and faster with every update from Asus.
I use the stock browser still as well. I have tried various others on the TF and use Dolphin HD on my HTC Desire, but on the TF the stock browser seems the best still, I haven't had any issues with it other than it being a bit slow on forums.
I'm on 100% stock, using stock browser, and on Newgrounds.com right now. Flash is running smooth. Yes, when scrolling down the page I see the empty boxes but they render quickly. TF smokes the ipad2.
I use the official rom and it works GREAT, watch flash videos without a problem. Really if you have those kinds of problems you should hate your rom ( unless you are using the official one, in that case i would factory reset ) not the tf...
I'm using stock browser also. The keyboard delay is annoying I have to say.
For the rest it works OK. Sync my bookmarks with Google which I find very handy.
I'm running Revolver OC and ADW EX.
This is very fast and fluid. I'm very pleased with the way it works right now.
Most of the OP issues sound like browser issues, I can't access gmail settings without any browser crashing too, but no biggy
Forums are known to be slow for typing into, I think we need a browser that supports 2D Hardware acceleration like FF does on the PC etc
I'm running the latest prime rom also and I'm OC'd to 1.5 GHz along with ADW EX and i couldn't be happier with my tf. I also use Dolphin HD and have no problems with it. As someone else said use apps specialized for specific tasks rather than websites.

Transformer browser restarting

I am finally using the Transformer on vacation and the browser is erroring with a "force restart" message. Can be using 2-4hrs and message pops up. Not very nice.
On the latest build. What gives..Is this to be expected on Ver3.2?
Now i will say this...My wife's iPad has never done this..would hate to buy Apple but you cannot fault a Apple not working 99.9%..100% if flash gets loaded and with Steve Jobs gone this will happen.
use dolphin hd tablet.
Use opera browser, I think it's the best browser for the TF ATM, dolphin HD is good also but it's slower and laggier then opera for me...

Ok and installed. Let's see how this behaves.
Some quick comments:
1. Open web sites at first are slower..about 10secs more then stock browser
2. Flash is work fine
3. Pages are scrolling smoother then stock browser
More to come...
To the OP, android did not just come out yesterday. If you really hate android stock browser before trying out other alternatives, you should get yourself an ipad.
I've actually seen people complain about the black area around the screen on the iconia and transformer. I told those people to get an ipad because [sarcasm] the ipad has no black area around its screen at all[/sarcasm].
I have the same problems with the latest version

I stated that the stock browser after 2-5hrs of use gives a "force restart" pop-up message. I am using a "stock" unit with the lastest firmware. I am trying another browser to see if it works without crashing. Again, since I do have a iPad 1 I can compare on the user experience. Android has some work to do on there platform...FACT
OP:
1. Flash is not 100% working on FP sites...this is noted from OP whitepaper
2. Using 3hrs and no crash message at this time..I use around 8 tabs in the browser.
3. Screen sizing is not as good as stock browser....OP resizing back and forth.
4. There is a lag from the keybard when typing..OS issue as this happens in any app.
Trying flash on both browsers. Flash does not work well on 360 views. It tries but then page displays "stop" symbol then site tab removes itself. Nice..
Site is landrover.com

Everything needs work. Thats why we have alternatives like firefox or opera. If you want everything to work exactly perfectly on stock you should stick with the ipad.
1, 3, and 4 are not true. Opera and firefox do not lag at all. This is not an os issue. Its software compatibility with the website issue.
Again, thats why we have free alternatives.

Flash is spotty on sites..as GM, Shopnbc.tv just to name a few. Basically the tablet is just not as good as a Laptop..The tablet is not 100% ready for Primetime...Apple still has the support of the business and OS..while no tablet at this time can replace a Laptop..I still will support my TF...BUT that's why use a Alienware M11x...light and ultra fast and works 100%..
I just uninstall OP.....going to test Dolphin Browser HD
Just one more note on OP:
When streaming video, the video remains playing as in Standard Browser or Dolphin this pauses the stream when switching to other tabs. This is very nice as with me having 8 or 9 tabs going at a time I can have streaming music in the background.
Now..Dolphin was able to work a little better for flash at landrover.com, Shopnbctv worked 100%. This app has a lot of setup options....
Since last firmware upgrade I noticed frequent browser crashes to the homescreen.
Suddenly the browser window disppears, and I am back at the homescreen, without the browser window I was watching being saved - when I restart the browser I am back at my starting page.
Did not find any solution!

My browser under 3.2 rebooted spontaneously one time. Other than that, I love it. Flash works smoothly, pages render fast enough, and the menu list when you touch the extreme right edge is fabulous.
I'm playing around too. When I first got 3.2 I though the browser was better. Now it seems to crash all the time. I've been using OP and it works pretty well. The sizing issues are annoying, but it works.
Hopefully, Google will get this fixed. The browser on my Vibrant (Froyo) is rock solid.
I'll give Dolphin its shot too. I would be ok with a little slower if it was stable.
Glad to see I'm not the only one with this issue. I've had it happen multiple times right now - really pronounced on Amazon's site when browsing through items.
Also noticed that my "go back" button (the arrow, not the browser's actual back button) no longer functions as expected. I used to be able to hit that to go back to the previous page - now it takes several tries or me going to the top of the page and using the actual back button to go back. Anyone know of a fix? It's been a problem since the last OTA.

Google Chrome browser arrives on Android

The latest step in bringing Google-based unification has arrived. The Chrome browser is here on Android. This beta version is currently only available for that elite crowd of ICS phones and tablets and like its desktop progenitor, the synced settings and bookmarks are all in tow. Expect to see a new, more natural mobile view of the tab system. It'll also remember what you were last looking at on your desktop Chrome browser, and sync it across to your mobile device -- it's like Kindle or iBook's bookmarking system, but for the web. Your autocorrect content from the desktop is similarly synced. Expect to see the reappearance of link previews, something you may recall from the results of any Google searches, offering a brief thumbnail of a link's destination. We're giving it a good play-around right now, but while we get our first impression up, check the quick intro video after the break.
dont think we can get it on the note yet, but will be able to use it when they release the ICS
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVjw7n_U37A&feature=player_embedded
It works just fine with the CM9 alpha build of ICS. Just FYI.
What is up with Adobe though? I thought Apple wanted to kill Flash, but it turns out Adobe hates themselves too.

I've got the same problem... It seems like it would be ROM related, I saw a comment on Market from an HTC Desire user that complained about choppy performance but at least it seemed to run on that phone.
I would be really thankful if anyone managed to figure out and/or fix the problem! (if it is not ROM related)

40 Minutes with the LTE One X (With Pics)

Just wrote about my time with the LTE One X today at AT&T. Posted it in another forum but wanted to share the link. Also included photos I snapped at the store.
I just spent 20 minutes with the One X at my local AT&T store. My second round. Some observations.
The screen just blows away the iPhone 4/4S. It's honestly absurd how sharp it is. Whites are significantly white and everything just looks incredible. (Pictures, video, text, backgrounds, etc.)
Wi-fi was enabled however the sales rep told me they were having an issue with the cellular connection (I didn't ask what exactly). The rep was nice enough to download Chrome Beta for me to mess with.
Chrome Beta over wi-fi was faster than Safari on my iP4. I was able to handle the unit somewhat easily with one hand. I have smallish hands but was able to reach the address bar with my thumb in portrait without too much discomfort. I think the light weight of the device and curved backing help a great deal with respect to using it with one hand.
There were seven levels with respect to increasing and decreasing the volume. I believe the iPhone has 16 levels.
The unit I was handed appeared to have full power. Because ICS does not have a battery percentage indicator by default, I was unable to notice how much battery I lost in my 20 minutes on wi-fi. When I returned the device it did not appear as if the battery icon changed much, or at all.
I do have one serious gripe, and it has to do with Chrome. In order to access your bookmarks, you need to tap 'Menu' and then 'Bookmarks'. On Safari I simply tap the dedicated bookmarks icon. So it's an additional step, and while it may not seem like a big deal, it most certainly is. At least for me it is. That extra tap is a pain in the arse. I spend a lot of time browsing on Safari with my iPhone and I can't get used to that additional step. I can't believe Chrome doesn't have a dedicated bookmark icon like Safari.
The stock browser also has no bookmarks icon. You need to tap 'Menu' then 'Bookmarks' just like Chrome. Puzzling.
Also the Chrome browser does not have a '.com' button on the keyboard. The stock browser on the One X (and Safari of course) do.
Out of curiosity, does anyone know of any Android browser that does have a bookmark icon? Dolphin perhaps? Opera? Perhaps Chrome will adopt this feature down the road.
Anyways, that serious gripe aside, I didn't walk away making a decision. I was banking on using Chrome if I jump ship, but this bookmarks issue really bothers me. I think I'm still going to wait till after WWDC to make a decision.
Lol. That sounds like a small insignificant problem to base your decision upon, don't you think?
Chrome's cloud syncing of the bookmarks with your desktop Chrome browser is better than anything else out there.
Accessing my desktop open tabs through the mobile chrome beta tops anything any other browser has ever done. Period.
We have a think called 'widgets'... there's a bookmark one that allows you to go straight to your bookmarked pages (without the browser even open in the first place)...
so that's a step less than the iphone technically. lol

Not at all. It's an unnecessary extra step.
I'm not saying that alone would stop me from getting the One X. But I could not transition to Chrome or any Android browser that requires that extra step.

How exactly would that work though? And could I use it with Chrome and not the stock browser?
You can try Dolphin browser's latest version (it may still be in beta), which you swipe in from the left side and you can access the bookmark directly. No clicks!

Yes, the bookmarks widget asks you on your first use what browser you want to use, if you have more than one installed.

isn't the stock browser chrome? anyways, you have the option when you download a new browser, or you can default your favorite one and it will automatically open when you go to any webpage.
as far as how widgets work, you have many options. from a simple text or tile that takes you two that page, to fully updated previews that simply go full screen. folders, menus, scrollables, man, it's limitless...that's android.
Well it appears there is a solution to my gripe. (Widget or another browser.) Even with that said I still think Chrome should have a dedicated icon for your bookmarks like Safari does. Makes more sense then having to tap 'Menu'.
Well if you use chrome on your pc and have a home page set up to where you have pinned tabs "basically bookmarks", then you can log into the chrome browser and it will basically have a home page identical to the pc.
Edit: Dont quote me on that I cant quite remember if you have to do any extra steps because I uninstalled chrome because Im waiting on the HOX, simply tired of the captivate.

Does your Chrome have a little box next to the address bar? Isn't that essentially the same as the tabs? When I click on it and I have multiple pages open, it brings me to a view of all open tabs so I can choose the one I want...seems like tabs to me.
I am a little confused. Was this a review on the One X or on Chrome Beta?

...whole point of it having the 'beta' moniker still attatched to it.
The beauty of android is option. I agree with the lack of bookmark taking an extra step, so I use Quick ICS browser, it is based off of ICS default browser, downloaded from market. A simple swipe from either edge of phone brings up an awesome array of quick options. Take a look at the play store.. By far the best option out in my opinion.. You will fall in love with it I am sure. Also note this can be used in the default ICS browser, enabled under options.. Hope this helps.
Thanks for all the replies. This being Android, there are several options. Also Chrome is still in Beta. Maybe they'll bring a bookmarks button down the road. (Or not.)

The sheer genious of Apple is their understanding that the majority of the population don't WANT options. I don't have data back this, but I would bet anything that the vast majority of Android owners are also Windows PC or Linux OS users. This is because we are the types who WANT options. I want the freedom to change my CPU or graphics card on a whim, and I want the option to change the code in my phone. Most people don't. This is why there will always be Apple products vs something else.
I didn't completely get this until I bought my parents iPhones. It was the only smartphone my parents could figure out and they fell in love with it immediately. When I asked why, my mom replied "because I dont feel like I can screw it up by changing something." They liked something that they felt was set in stone and didnt have too many options.
This fundamental difference in personality type is also why 90% of iPhone vs Android (or Mac vs PC) arguments are ridiculous - it is often a matter of taste, not a matter of fact.

You're totally right, there are a lot of people out there that like being put into an environment where no matter what they do it will never be "wrong". They don't want to be scared to use their phone.
I love the choices android gives though. The funny part is that I'm a mac user, I just use my macbook as a hub, so I never tinker around with it (I like the box, lol) but when it comes to phones I love playing around with them.
And I'm sure chrome still has some tweaks left to do, like others have said, it's still in beta.

New Dolphin Browser Beta, best HTML5 compatibility

As titled, new dolphin beta, go download and try, it's very refined.

I use it now instead of Chrome It's really fast and fluid and does change the setup of text when I zoom in so I don't have to scroll all the time. That's the one thing I hate about Chrome
I replaced chrome as well. One thing i'm going to miss is desktop/phone tab sync.
i also use chrome. lets see how this fairs against it.

The lack of ability to import even on phone bookmarks makes this not worth my while.

Akways used DB. Ever since Android 2.3 came out. Still love it over Chrome now-a-days because of speed dial bookmarks on the load page. I can't stand the way Chrome displays bookmarks; albeit it does sync with desktop Chrome which is a plus over DB.
Been on DB since 1.6 donut on the G1 and doubt I'll ever change. Makes it hard to switch from something you know inside out.
I've tested stock-chrome-DB beta. According to my experience stock still is the fastest. DB comes second and chrome the last.
