Got throttle but they claim thy haven't - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Only getting 0.1 download but when i switch the apn i get fast data. Any suggestions.

They also gave me a $30 credit and are still claiming i haven't been throttled.

When throttled there is an obvious note on the account on their end that the phone has been throttled.
What department did you speak with, and what is your current data usage

4.2 gb of data used and i spoke to data support. Cycle ends on the 20th.
My speed using the new apn. Its not a big deal because im not in a LTE area yet but its just the principle of it.

Same thing is happening to me right now. Only used 1.8gb of data and I'm getting 0.05-0.1 speed. I called AT&T and they told me that I'm not throttled, my cycle ends on the 18th. I don't know wtf is wrong with AT&T but I'm sick and tired of the crap they're pulling. I won't be surprised if they start throttling unlimited data users around 1-2GB. I guess I'll be using my monthly 4G T-Mobile sim for now.

So your saying they credited you the price of the data plan for getting throttled?
Now I'm seriously tempted to go try this, even though I'm not throttled, because I really love screwing AT&T.

They credited me for $36 to be exact. They're the ones who stated that i shouldn't be throttled, so why should i pay for service that isn't working. Everytime they screw up, they should credit your account. People who let them slide are crazy.

When you get throttled on AT&T 3G, it's like the same speeds as Sprint's WiMax.

The exact same thing happened to me. I called and they said I wasn't throttled but I was getting .18 d/l but 1.10mb u/l. I changed the apn to get my speeds back and the last day of my billing cycle I changed it back to the pta apn. I never got a 5% warning but got some weird message about my account but it never warned me about my data.

I usually just use the skyrocket to do a quick login and do what I need to do. Since AT&T is throttling for no reason now, i'm gonna tether my laptop for work off my skyrocket. I usually would never do that but they clearly are throttling me and not admitting it.

Same here. I called ATT cs and actually got to tier 3 support they said I was not Throttled. But admitted that there had been several reports. They suggested I use an Alternate APN (that was a suprise). I was already using the "phone" APN hack that is discussed in another thread. It is hard to tell the BS from the truth with them. They said they would get back to me, but I am not holding my breath. Hope my alternate APN keeps working. BTW I am not in a LTE market.

I've get throttle every month, I wouldn't be surprise if at&t it's doing some fault play here. I when from using 500 mb to 1.5 gb to 4-5 gb's per month. How? I'm not doing nothing different here the same occasional Facebook, web, YouTube ect I was doing 6 months ago. On another note 3gb for $30 is still to low at&t I'll say 5gb is about right for $30

They already are. I hit 2,000 MB smack dab on, and throttled instantly.

AT&T offered to exchange my phone - without admitting that i was throttled.
the only way i could confirm i was throttled was:
1) my speeds (lol)
2) if i log into www.att.com/wireless and look at recent data usage, my "2041 mb of unlimited" is in RED - and normally its in green
im at 40gb now after 3 days of being throttled (few tricks, hspa, phone apn, then lots of netflix etc)
wonder if i can push 100gb this month

Very interesting indeed. They claimed yesterday that there has been no change in policy. Users will continue to be notified and unless the user is speaking to the wrong person, there is no reason one would be told they are not throttled when they are.

tmobile data cap

blah sadly today tmobile capped by data, because i went over the`5gb limit. is there a way to uncap it, or at least does anyone have an idea?
It took me just a week to get my data capped. Its because id rather use my phone and get 8mbps instead of my home Internet which is sadly 0.4mbps. I don't think its possible to get the cap removed. Your going to have to wait till your next cycle.
I thought they just throttle it and not cap it?

GEEZ, what are on do you guys do to stream so much data? I've never hit close to that in a month
Lol i practically use my phone as a computer. I download things from games to music
I thought that for Unlimited Data they just drop you down to 3G after you've used 5GB on 4G.
It is my understanding that they throttle you pretty hard at 5 GB, to GPRS or EDGE speeds.
If you haven't deleted it, My Account will show your usage. I use 3G Watchdog which will straight-line predict your end-of-month usage as well.
For people not used to the speeds available, it isn't hard to chew up 5 GB in a month. For example, if you stream 128 kbps radio for an hour in the morning and an hour on the way home, that is about 3.3 GB of payload, so probably 3.5-4 GB of data transfer a month.
Thankfully TuneIn FCs a lot
Yea man they bone you pretty hard after you go past 5gb. I went from 4g to edge smh, I am aboit to calk and complain. I am pretty sure there was a way to get passed it on the vibrant, after things get settled for the galaxy s 4g I'm sure we will be able to do the same.

Thats not worth it. Every carrier has a cap even if they advertise that they don't. I've read on the internet that on sprint people get throttled and maybe even get their accounts canceled going over a certain limit. I think tmobile's is the best option right now.

Thats wrong, Sprint is the only carrier with true unlimited. Although there data speeds are the worst of the big four. I barely got 1mbs on 3G and around 4mbs on 4G. When i could get a signal, witch sucks cause i live in KC. Sprints headquaters is here, I could no longer take the slow speeds and went back to tmo where i have 4G everywhere I go. The war of words and facts continues with sprint preparing a new TV ad -- more of a campaign -- where CEO Dan Hesse goes on camera and defines the word "unlimited" and what concepts it is not compatible with.
These incompatible terms are "metering, overage, or throttling, which is code for slowing you down", Hesse says while Bill Morgan, sprint senior vice president-Corporate Marketing agrees that some of Sprint's competitors are creating confusion in their customer's minds by referencing "unlimited" plans which are not unlimited in reality.

AT&T Clarifies Its Policy On Data Throttling, Allows 5GB Of Unaltered Data Flow For L

AT&T Clarifies Its Policy On Data Throttling, Allows 5GB Of Unaltered Data Flow For L
With mobile data usage continuing to skyrocket and the availability of spectrum scarce, AT&T, like other wireless companies, manages its network in the most fair way possible so that we can provide the best possible mobile broadband experience for all our customers.
How we’re managing the network only affects a small minority of the heaviest smartphone data users still on unlimited plans. Put another way, this does not impact more than 95 percent of our smartphone customers.
Our unlimited plan customers have told us they want more clarity around how the program works and what they can expect. Here’s what customers need to know:
Customers with a 3G or 4G smartphone – who also still have our unlimited data plan – will see speeds reduced if they use 3GB (gigabytes) of data or more in a billing cycle. Speeds will return to normal at the start of the next billing cycle. For context, less than 5 percent of smartphone customers use more than 3GB per month.
For customers with a 4G LTE smartphone – who also still have our unlimited data plan – data speeds will be reduced if usage is 5GB (gigabytes) or more in a billing cycle. Speeds will return to normal at the start of the next billing cycle
Click to collapse
Customers will get a text message from us before experiencing a change in speed.
Even with reduced data speeds, these customers will still be able to email and surf the web, and continue to use an unlimited amount of data each month.
Not impacted by this program, launched last year, are customers on our tiered data plans.
The reason reduced speeds only apply to unlimited smartphone customers is because their data usage is significantly higher than those on tiered plans. For example, in January, the top 5 percent of our unlimited data plan customers used an average of over 50 percent more data than the top 5 percent of customers on tiered plans.
Because spectrum is limited and data usage continues to soar, we manage our network this way to be as fair as possible and so we can provide the best possible mobile broadband experience to everyone.
We encourage all of our customers to use Wi-Fi whenever possible – especially when watching video, which is the most data-intensive activity.
That’s because data activity over Wi-Fi does not count against the threshold for unlimited customers that triggers reduced data speeds or against customers’ tiered data plans. Customers can find out more at www.att.com/datainfo
But some people were getting throttled even when they didn't go over 3gb. I believe they shouldn't throttle for the whole billing cycle. Only when someone is abusing it when there's a lot of traffic in the network, and restore it after that period. But that would probably require a lot of work. I dunno just my opinion.
Never been throttled, I don't use a lot of data.

You're still getting unlimited data. When you signed up, did the contract guarantee you unlimited data at speeds greater than or equal to XXmb/s, or just unlimited data?
Maybe a better way to "CLARIFY" is to change the Plan name from UNlimited to " LIMITED "
That would clear it all up would'nt it?

And does anyone know if this 3GB cap just started?

I think 5GB sounds fair for an "unlimited" (limited) plan.

Here's the deal. Less than 5% of AT&T users have unlimited data. They want the unlimited people gone. They are trying to monetize power-users while managing bandwidth (which is a finite resource) to keep the average users happy. If you had a business and had to choose between keeping 5% of your customers happy, or 95% of your customers happy... you would make the same choice. These decisions aren't about the users today... it's about 2015 when the average smartphone user will use alot more data... and there will be more smartphone users.... etc, etc.
Not saying I condone these decisions... but after all they are a business. They have a finite resource (bandwidth) and have to make as much profit as possible with that finite resource. Bandwidth doesn't grow on trees, and neither does money. End of story.

Post your unlimited data usage thus far!

No wonder why they are eliminating unlimited, what the heck do you do on your phone to use 28Gb? (tethering i assume)
haha nice. last semester in college, my wired connection wasn't working so i had to 'illegally' tether my atrixs' hspa+ for a week. used about 15gb in a week to watch live streams of the us open. thank god for unlimited data
with the extra ram this phone makes actual real life data speeds sooooo much faster than my other lte phones could do. I'm at 39 gigs so far with billing cycle ending the 29th. And that's without even having the gs3 the whole time, wonder what ill get to next month? Btw no tethering here, I just really like watching HD video

Not too bad methinks..
I have to laugh at all the people who say a few of us who use high amounts of data is why a carrier will remove unlimited data for everyone. So they feel bitter at us for ruining it for everyone else and would rather blame us than their service provider, since its easier.
Oh please, don't you think these carriers would have just throttled or kicked off us few users, instead of forcing tiered plans on all their customers? Its all because of further maximizing profit, not because of us.
Doesn't bother me at all, I still have unlimited data just can't see how people are able to use that much data on a phone in a month.
Must have to have the phone plugged in all the time.
Most I have ever been able to do is 13 GB. I really had to try for that though.
Since July 9th.:
554 MB on Verizon
Since June 24th:
5.58 GB over wi-fi

lol yes i believe i do. luckily i elected to buy the version of the galaxy s 3 that gets preference over others on the data network so sorry i guess everyone will have to wait for me to finish my download before its their turn. best decision i ever made, and to think i actually almost bought the gs3 that you have that gives the busy signal when others are using the network. man im glad i dodged that bullet haha
all sarcasm aside, has anyone ever actually had a problem with using verizons network that can be attributed to data hogs? this isnt 2007 and im not in att using an iphone. big deal, i use a lot of data that i pay for so what. any other user on verizon canuse the exact same amoutn of data as i choose to use bc verizon doesnt throttle the 4g speeds, youll just have to pay more than my price for it. dont hate those of us lucky enough to use all the data we want without paying any overage unless you also go around hating every verizon employee for getting a company discount on the same sevice you pay for. also, those of us on verizon who no longer have the unlimited data plan have access to a discount on upgrades that the unlimited users dont have the smae access to but we sure dont go around flaming others for only having to pay $199 for our $599 phones. every thing is a trade off

Yay for forced data limits/throttle in the future. Vzw doesn't guarantee any "grandfathering". It says right in the contract they can change terms on you and it gives you a free out to go to other carriers. The whole –look at what I can do is quite childish. Whatever.
Heck I use 30gb at home on Cox between two computers and a ps3 and pay for 50gb

A guy over on the Rezound forums hit 1TB. I'm sitting at about 9GB this month.
And for the people bleating about this being why they did away with unlimited data--no. Just shut up. They did it out of pure greed. LTE is cheap, and for every person using 30gb there's 10 people using 500mb. Verizon might be losing money on some customers, but in the aggregate, they were still making money hand over fist, even with unlimited data. But they can make more with shared/tiered. Guess which they went with?
I'm normally around wifi except when I go workout so I rarely break 2gb. Even so I have no problems with data hogs. I've worked a number of years at an isp and I can tell you data hogs are not the problem unless if the network engineers are total idiots. A properly managed network will prevent heavy users from bogging down the network during peak usage.
But many of you guys buy right into the carrier's manufactured bandwidth crisis so they can justify charging $15 per gb.

To straight talk?

So I'm planning on leaving at&t after I pay off a bill my cousin and I racked up' $390 ' . (Family plan). I was thinking about going to straight talk and using at&t towers there. Just a few questions , if I just upgraded and now want to switch will I have to pay an etf? Secondly does anyone know how good straight talks speeds are ?
The speeds aren't anything too great but it works fine for streaming Pandora all the time.

Thanks, I might have to give them a shot.
This is a slow time. Usually im getting closer to 5. But I have no issues. If you buy the ATT microsim from straight talk there is no need to sim unlock.
As for their "unlimited" plan. It really isn't. Its ~100MB a day. Also, if you read their ToS, they can disconnect your line whenever they want. To pretty much bypass the throttling (if you use that much data) skip entering the proxy information when setting up APN.

Is that true, I get throttled every month about halfway through! I'll try this out.
OP, it's not to bad as long as you don't have to call CS lol

Not entering the proxy might have used to prevent them from throttling you but not anymore. I don't have the proxy in my phone and I was being throttled last month. A rogue app got away from me and racked up a lot of data. My up and down speed was limited to .25mbps. As soon as the month was up my speeds returned to normal 4-6mbps.

Hmm. Weird. I haven't been throttled since the first month and I use easily 4gb per month.

I can't say for sure but mine may have exceeded 6gigs. In one day the app may have used upwards of 1 gigabyte.

ATT to Straight Talk

Question: looking at leaving ATT to cut down on expenses. Straight talk and T- mobile both have deals where you can being your own phone and just switch Sims. Since I'm running Scott's CM 10 (12/29), figuring their requirement to have the phone unlocked is not an issue. I noticed that T- mobile has a limit then it's throttled. Straight talk doesn't seem to have a cap or throttle point. Anyone out there can give me their experience with straight talk? Thank you for any advice/wisdom/warnings.

ST doesn't have a cap...but they do reserve the right to throttle you. Most people don't get throttled and those that do are usually at around 5gbs...but I've read stories of people getting throttled multiple at times at data amounts as low as 1.5gbs...
Again though...most people don't really get throttled on st...at least from what I've read...but there still is a noticeable amount that do get throttled
Been debating on switching to st my self...not sure if I wanna lose lte on my HTC vivid though :/

Thanks. This all still looks too good.... So used to doing something when everything looks good, then finding out later that there was a huge BUT to the good news.
When throttled, I know that downloading a new ROM may take forever, but would I still be able to do any radio streaming? Even low quality?
Thanks again.

Yes Straight Talk will throttle you. When I first got straight talk I used 5+ gigs in first month without being throttled, but 2 weeks into the second month and about 2 gigs used I got a friendly call from them and was throttled. Severely throttled as close to no data as possible. To use that much data I was setting up computers at a friends house that did not have internet.
I have had straight talk over a year now, and that is the only time I have bee throttled. I have went over 2 gigs in some of those months. ,

I use the att sim from St and have for about 4 months now. Last month I was downloading Rom updates at work which add up quick but stayed under 1.5 Gb total for the month and my speed was slowed to 0.23mbs where I was getting around 5-7mbs. I never got a call or text about it but when my next month stated again it seemed speed was back to normal. I do like the Service tho as it is the same as att and half the price

I've been so spoiled with high-speed at home/work/public wifi that I have forgotten one thing.... If I'm throttled to that speed, could I still stream at low quality? (32-64K) Been so long since dial-up......
Are we spoiled or what????
I did have trouble once I had insane crazy slow DL speeds I called them they reset no trouble since.I'm happy but like I said check for your area coverage.

I'd suggest reading my recent experiences with limitations and throttling practices on straight talk before switching.

So, from what I've heard so far, straight talk uses ATT towers, so reception should be the same. Data usage should not be a problem, as long as I don't tether. The throttling does go down to a crawl, but some people don't see a definable amount that it starts at. At least one person noted that they called and got speed back up. Overall, not to bad I take it.

I've been using Straight Talk since October and love it but I'm not a huge user of data on my phone or my tablet. I did use my phone as a hotspot over Christmas while at my grandmothers house in the backwoods of Kentucky and not only had service but internet for my laptop and Toshiba Thrive tablet. I must say I was impressed! :victory:
LOL I wouldn't abuse it to much they cut me off completely within 10 days lol funny when I'm home I'm on WiFi anyways I'm switching after this month getting a new phone I'm over the throttle and complete shut off.I will keep the infuse though its a bad a$$ phone for sure.
