[Resolved] [Q] Windows 7 Shutting down? - General Questions and Answers

Ok First of all guys i wasn't really sure where to put this but i'm having issues with my pc. Here are my specs:
AMD Phenom x4 9750
8 GB Dual Channel DDR2 RAM
Gateway RS780 (AM2)
ATI Radeon HD 4600 Series
And here is my problem when ever im doing some sort of really strenuous activity like transcoding it transcodes for a bit then shuts down this has just started happening. Before i thought it was the installation so i did a clean install and its still happening havent tried it in linux though because im running the 12.04 alpha and handbrake doesnt support it yet. Myself i'm guessing it is overheating but i don't know why or for sure since i don't know were a log file would be. But my pc has been running basically 24/7 with a few exceptions for 2 and 1/4 years and i have three internal hdd so i don't know whats going on so if anybody could help shed some light on to fixing this or if my pc is done than it would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance
P.S. mods if you think this is the wrong place then please move

Is it going through the "standard" windows shutdown process, or is it more like a system "crash" that is powering off?

It's like a crash no blue screen or regular shutdown process just working and off
Edit: I just had an idea maybe there is too much draw off that one outlet because there is an external hdd, switch, ps3, computer, stb, hd tv, gamecube, and a few other things. Now that I'm reading this that is alot of things plugged in to that. But then again its on a battery backup so the back up should kick on right?

Download Realtemp and Prime95, monitor your CPU temps while you stress test your PC. Once you've ruled out that as an issue try running memtest against your RAM to rule that out.

This man knows what he's talking about
It sounds like over-current draw (PSU too small) or overtemp on the CPU. Rule out the CPU and memory using Dirk's suggested tools.
EDIT: I just read your second post, you need to split up all those things hanging off a single socket. I'd be scared of blowing my house fuses with that load!

You may also want to do a "barebones" test of your UPS to see if it is still functioning properly.

Ok I appreciate all you guys help im running a memtest from grub right now ill keep you guys posted

Ok memtest passed now I disconnected to of the internal hdd and I'm trying to transcode again so so far so good except speccy say 121 degrees celcius for the moboard that's red in specyy and the CPU is 111 degrees celcius also red in speccy
Edit: and it just turned off so do you guys think its over heating

Holy Jesus. My CPU loads at 45. Your problem is heat mate, and far too much of it.
Some case fans and new TIM will help here. Probably a new CPU cooler also. Your CPU is hitting its thermal ceiling and shutting down.

You're welcome buddy.
Clean out your entire computer. Grab a vacuum and suck the dust out of your heatsink, video card, off your motherboard, out of your case fans and vents, everywhere. Strip it down as much as you possibly can. If your NB temp is as high as your CPU, that tells me the TIM under your NB heatsink is shot, too.
TIM: Actic Silver 5 is good stuff. If you're in a hurry and on a budget, Arctic Ceramique performs well also. If money is no object and you don't mind following detailed instructions (including burn-ins), try IC Diamond.
Fans: Depends on the size you need. Scythe make great fans, especially their Gentle Typhoons if you can find them. My case uses 200mm fans and I have BitFenix Spectre Pro's, which are pretty good so far. Go for high CFM and low noise, unless you're buying new fans for your CPU heatsink, in which case a high static pressure is important (not particularly important for case fans).
Heatsink: Anything Noctua if you've got some spare change laying around. They are fantastic performers but need a lot of room. CoolerMaster Hyper 212+, Prolimatec, Thermalright, or any of Corsairs/Antecs SC watercoolers work well.
Good luck man, I hope there's been no lasting damage done at all!

Awesome fan cooler and car dock combonation

On my ride home today I discovered something unique that is only available to thunderbolt users. I was running GPS and pandora which made my phone a little hot. I took out my kickstand and put it in my air conditioning vent. This provided air cooling to the phone and a great hands free dock. Try it out, hope you guys had as much luck as i did.
That's pretty funny others in here have done it as well.

that's an awesome idea. I have jeep wrangler so I usually put the kick stand on and put it on top.
How does it stay in there wouldn't it be to heavy and fall out?

There is another thread showing this. The bottom of the phone rests against the dash so some of the weight is supported there.
That will work great until winter when the air coming out of the vent is warm...

Ultimate Boot Animation Challenge

Ever seen the spot for the Palladia Channel?
Where the flock of birds, morph into trees, then into a large crow?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPIQ35YncXU
Make THAT a boot.ani!!
But instead of Palladia at the end, it says Android

Pretty cool clip, dont know about fitting
all your asking for in a bootani with out cutting the hell out of it(longest i have had one run was 42 seconds) but cool idea. i'm not great at photoshop to add the ending you want.
Tapa away from a galaxy far away
I'll give it a shot, like dased said tho, will have to cut it down in length some. Gimme a day or so...

Edit- Cuz I'm wound up on Monster.. dammit lol
Actually, in the spot that runs on TV now, it starts at the 24 second mark, so you can lop that first 24 seconds off
Also taking out the cascading shots between :40 and :55 will save another 15 seconds
Never seen that, but it was intense.

Let me take a look(still iffy on the ending you asked for) .
still need to knock off 10 more seconds or so
Can probably drop the ending then, there's a few secs, and maybe trim the beginning
I think getting it cropped for time wont be so bad. With the parts you mentioned and then pulling some extra frames out here and there, ought to be able to make it work.
One trick I've used recently was to rip several copies to jpg from the video, varying the number of frames for each. IE: one copy might have 150 frames, one 200, and another 250. Then you can use diff parts from each to complete the whole. It allows you to speed up parts of the animation that wont be effected by reduced frame rate, areas where the detail isn't real high you use the lower valued rates, and areas of high detail you use the higher valued rates. If that makes sense. Lol
Anywoo I'll try and get something tomorrow.

It checks more than just every boot. I purchased this back when it came out on the evo og, it is worth every penny. But only downfall is no icon customization. I currently have it on my transformer and it is smooth.

It's not 2 bad. I did try it.. Big problem to me is that it is constantly using over 80mb of ram which is tough to stomach when we only have a small amount to work with.

it should be an .apk
I just tried this. It's ok but the ram usage is (obviously) too much. I applied hard to kill launcher (v6) and then angry birds took about 3 minutes to load. It also destroys the battery.

15 dollars is stupid - Does not have any features to it, looks good but that is it ....
Pros: Looks good, it is smooth
Cons: No folders on app drawer, no hiding apps on app drawer, little customization.

Look again, all I've done was post on general forum, and what is the point to having many posts?
Also, $15 bucks for a launcher is ridiculous! Specially because all SPB Shell is cute nothing else... Plus Lucky Patcher will work on it untill reboot, so it's only buying a trial anyhow .....

Curious. PSX4Droid.

So I've been playing some old games of mine on my SK, through psx4droid. Yes I have the original copies so no worries. But I've come to notice that I can only use up to 2 hard keys at once? I play Twisted Metal, but I can't turn and shoot while driving at the same time. Is there a way to fix this, or is this a hardware limitation on the Sidekick 4g's keyboard? Any info would be appreciated (and I think this is in the right section for a post, I appologize if not :\ )

Yes, only 2 keypresses can be detected at once. No, there's no fix for this. Many threads about many phones with same problem here on XDA. Makes me sad too...

I wonder if there ever will be a fix. Hmm...
Personally I use a PS3 controller using the sixaxis driver. It's very cheap and works great. Plus the author is here on XDA.
Well... I can't always have a PS3 controller with me. That would be a bit geeky
Still, its kind of a reasonable workaround could be worse haha.
And you have a full set of controls

I remember reading something on XDA front page a few months back about a phone that was able to fix the 2 button limit. Forgive my bad memory, but all I can remember about the problem/fix is that it used the term ghost something.
Either way, it was an exciting new development on an upcoming phone back then - definitely after the time of SK4G. 6 axis + TV out.

This is cool. Allows you to give any image a 3D wallpaper look. Looks awesome on the SGN10.1. Some reviews say it doesn't work on their tablets but works great on this one.

I tryed version from apkmania (for test purposes). This program is unstable, picture that I choose is not in full resolution, even if I set zoom on 0, walpaper is still zoomed. At the end, I decided to erase it from my Note 10.1.
Works perfectly for me. You just need to pic a photo sized correctly to work.
I can never get over people who complain about a < $2 app they would use every day on their $500 tablet. No offense but don't be so damned cheap.
I don't think it's about cheapness. Some people weigh value against cost. I'm one; it's not that I'm cheap, I spent thousands of dollars in electronics each year to satisfy my tech cravings.
However, when it comes to value then it is a different thing. I'm not into pretty widgets, themes, icon packs and live wall papers. These are worthless and server no purpose other than aesthetics, IMO. Even those low-weigh-on-CPU worthless stuff and even if my tablet has butt loads of spare CPU juice and super extra RAM; even if the software in question only puts a 0.1% load on my tablet I don't want it, even if it's free.
I've had this philosophy even back in my iPhone days, I've had most them and things like WinterBoard, low weight, pretty on the eyes, and free... I don't want it.
To each, his own. You have no right on telling people what to spend their money on. The same way we cannot critisize you for already having spent your money on this live wallpaper.
Thanks for sharing, I actually like to see those pretty things; just not on my devices.
