Ok, I was an early adopter of this phone bought it the day it came out July 18th. There are a great many things that disappoint me about this phone, main thing being lack of Froyo at the moment. I'm tired of waiting for samsung, I have little faith it will truely resolve my issues which are the following
In order to use wifi I must reboot my phone, this only occurred after the official JH7 was loaded on it through the over the air update that ATT did.
Constantly having lag all the time, and having apps running that I never ever use and dont want such as ATT Navigator, ATT Family Map, etc. I was able to root the phone and get rid of those but it really hasnt helped.
My stereo bluetooth headphones must be paired EVERY single time I want to use them, its not the headphones because they work perfectly with 4 other devices.
Of course the GPS, it sucks for everyone, any of these or all fix that? Samsung seems unwilling.
So maybe I'm wishing too much but I've watched almost every youtube review of the ROMs that are out there and theres a few details that stick out for things that I want in a rom so I'll detail them here and hopefully someone can point me in the right direction as to which one has the best combo.

Go to romkitchen.org and build your own there. There are many threads about the advantages of one modem over another, and you can pick pretty much everything yourself. Then search for CLShortfuse's GPS fix and you'll be set.

30 hours, you have to consider what you are asking. I want faster dl, no lag, better gps, but I don't want to eat any more battery. It is possible to get 30hrs of light to moderate use. Heavy use will yield 12-18
Andromeda v1.2 is a rom that is pretty vanilla....simple and has the things your looking for. You have to try roms that you think will be what you want.

+2 for Andromeda 1.2.
You can fix all of these if you root the phone. The best ROM out there is the Rom Kitchen (aka "Doc's ROMs") over at romkitchen.org. You can "cook up" your own ROMs using the specifications you want. This is what is so great about the ROM kitchen, especially when compared to the other ROMs like Cognition: you can pick what you want, and don't have to take whatever it was that someone else decided was best. For example, if you want the benefits of rooting but want to keep touchwiz, the ROM kitchen has an option for that. It also lets you pick things like the theme, boot animation, apps, etc. There are 5 captivate modems, and you might just have to experiment to see which one is best. I did this, and it was well worth it. The one that worked best for me was the XXJPP modem. Just load a seperate ROM with each of the different modems, flash each, and download a few things to see which is faster. Also check and see how well the GPS works on each.
Rooting will fix the lag, although one of the ROM kitchen kernels (Glitterball's Voodoo) will improve it even further. There is something called "Project Voodoo" which is a community of developers who build a kernel tweak called Voodoo which completely fixes the remaining lag issue (this is caused by the inefficient way the captivate organizes its folders), and also improves a few other features such as resolution.
You should go try out my ROM its small and fast and stable. I'm getting great battery life and DL/UL speeds. Give it a shot.

Well I decided to go with the serendipity 5.9, I love the speed, my upload and download speeds almost doubled, bluetooth and wifi finally work like they are supposed to!!
I do have a few complaints though, like the keyboard for texting, I loved the samsung one, I hate swipe any way i can get the stock one back on there?

Use the add on kitchen and add samsung keyboard. download zip and flash.

I just found that, wow, short of having a flash on the camera and video chat this phone is now everything I could have ever dreamed of
Holy crap what a difference. Everything actually works and is super fast. I would be on cloud nine right now except for the fact I'm probably soon getting the Atrix, this will def hold me over till then.
Im using Precision 3.5 with the monochrome 3.5 theme. Its running the latest suckerpunch kernel. For sure my favorite combo I've tried so far. Its really amazing, not to mention dev'd by ryude, who is one of the best!

Need to get started on custom icons and I think I want to try my hand at a completely custom framework. Anyway, I was perfectly happy with 'dipity out of the box, but since I've flashed Paragon this phone is AMAZING. It's quite fast and the battery seems to last forever. Just now recharging for the first cycle after having to reflash my rom w/o a full battery, so after today I'll know for sure how long the battery last, but initially it seems like I'll get a day or so with my daughter constantly playing video's and games all day.
I have tried the team phoenix roms. I'm currently running phoenix 7.0 and am happy so far.

I am running phoenix. 7 with latest paragon 1200 rom using uv and this is by far the best combo I have had yet. Using jl3 modem and call quality is great. I change roms almost daily and this one will be here for a while, I am happy with everything this combo has to offer and speed and battery life is excellent.

...How quickly things change, now running Serendipity 6 with all the above still the same.. although I think I may flash the 1400 Paragon and try that out..
just went up to Serendipity 6.2 yesterday, same battery issues again im trying to do what I did last time to fix that part
busy day though, just got an ipad last night been trying to ha0xr that thing, no luck on jailbreaking 4.3 yet though

In those screen shots posted how did you get those multiple icons at the bottom? i mean other than the stock serendipity theme. im running the redrom right now, i dont want to lose the red but i would like the more icons at the bottom other than the phone the :: for app tray and the globe for internet

I wouldn't mind knowing either. I'm thinking it's a different launcher, but I'm only guessing. Still kinda new to android.
Ok guys, the title says it all. Do you plan on living with your One XL the way HTC intended it to be or do you plan on living on the wild side? Despite the non removable battery I plan on rooting as soon as we get some good roms. For me that's half the fun of android, as soon as I get bored with one rom I flash a new one! However I am a bit concerned about the non removable battery. I've ran into more than a few sticky situations while tinkering with my Atrix that the only solution was a battery pull i.e. infinite bootloops and not being able to access recovery. So what will it be for you?
I"m on a similar situation, but will Rom away.
definitely. and not having a removable battery isnt a problem, if you long hold the power button for 10 sec, the device will auto shutdown and simulate a battery pull.
i will root as soon as available so my root apps work and i can tether. i usually don't rom until roms are tried and true unless i'm testing. i'm not a fan of bugs and alphas.

Hold the power button for 10+ seconds. According to the One X manual on HTC's website that will be the equivalent of a battery pull. And several users of the International version have confirmed that this works

Definitely will root, probably going to have to flash the radio to get AWS working for WCDMA.
Probably wont root. Im going to stay fully stock and see if everything is fine. If i need more enhancements/mods i will sign my phone away to htcdev

Rooting it to remove bloat. Might flash a rom if it's stock ICS themed.
I'll probably root/ROM mine after a few days of being stock.
I want to try out some vanilla ICS on it, but who knows maybe it will be perfect the way it is
Will be rooting as soon as possible I use to many apps that require root. May stick with sense for a while but will certainly do something about the green battery icon I really hate it.

I'm not particularly interested in rooting any more these days, but I think I would prefer stock ICS again.
While Sense 4.0 is an improvement over past versions, it is still far too bloated and cluttered. Having only 9GB of available space on a 16GB device is unacceptable :\
I've never not rooted or flashed a different ROM on my device. Sometimes I will add my own hacks because devs are awesome enough to tell us their method for doing so. But my ROMs aren't good enough to publish and are just rips and customizations because I'm extremely picky.
Thankfully I've managed to Disable most of the Sense junk that I don't like and retain the good stuff. My stock ROM is running beautifully. HTC has done an amazing job of streamlining things and I'm really amazed.
I'll be able to hold out. I'd love root access for root call blocker and some other essential root-dependant changes but I'm pretty dang content right now. Such a wicked device. I've never loved a device out of the box as much as this phone.
Really hoping for AOKP for this device. I love the look of AOSP with the additional features included in AOKP...best of both worlds.
I'll definitely root ASAP, but will probably hold off on ROMs until a CM9 build pops up.
Non removable battery is a non issue. My Xoom has a non removable battery and I flash custom ROMs all the time. Power + Volume buttons.

The AOKP project is an awesome compliment to the AOSP sources that are released. They do such a fantastic job. Only very minor improvements and not too much screwing around.
Cyanogenmod trumps it by just a tiny bit though. I absolutely love what they do. They're intense. I always make small donations any time I can. They're amazing.

I'm always surprised when I see people posting about how they've had x amount of phones and never rooted. NEVER ROOTED!?!?!? I can understand and appreciate not unlocking the bootloader or flashing ROMs, but I don't understand why they'd be here if they aren't tinkering one way or another.
I normally don't even bother setting up my phones because I've already got everything lined up to root, unlock and probably flash a different ROM onto my device.

A grey 16gb wi-fi model.
So now, I have a couple of questions I wanted to ask before I started installing lots of apps onto this thing!
First off, I have been looking into the JB stuff, which is one of the main reasons I wanted the Note. It seems that this is not out in the UK yet (or anywhere except Germany?) but there are ways to root the Note and install it...
Except it seems these (and every other ROM) are all designed for only the 8000 model? Which *I believe* is the wifi+3G model...
1 - So does this mean I cant use many custom roms? As they seem to be designed for the 8000? or is this irrelevent?

1) There are usually tweaks that allow you to use the ROM, even if your device isn't the 8000. Keep in mind that those roms have telephony services, and will be looking for a 3G signal (unless disabled).
2) If you are staying stock I recommend waiting. If not, flash CM10. It's lovely!
3) It depends on if it is stock based or AOSP/CM based. Stock based roms retain all of the original functionality, but adds speed, animation, theme, and other misc tweaks. AOSP based roms lose all of the Samsung Touchwiz specific functionality (Multi-window, S apps), but give you a pure android experience and look. Of course, CM also has a cool theme chooser!
4) I believe you should charge it first, but others will correct me if I am mistaken

1) Its nice that I have the options to play with it then, I'm sure there are ways to disable the 3G search. I was tempted to get it, but it didnt seem worth the extra £100+ (I got my note on an offer)
2) I assume I can flash CM10 while I wait, and return to stock when it is released? I'm only used to iOS jailbreaking, where you can always return to stock easily... I'd assumed this would work in a similar way?
3) It would be a shame to lose out on the samsung stuff... I'm not hooked on touchWiz or anything, but the multi-window stuff in the new JB update looked pretty snazzy. Of course in a years time I may change to pure android roms, if only to keep updated (I expect samsung will stop making their own updates soon enough)
4) I plugged it in briefly, saw it already had half a charge, and so unplugged it ... I cant remember if I should charge it to full first, then discharge it to 0%... or run it flat then charge it to full. Or if it makes no difference at all. Curse you technology!!

All Android devices seem to have a real problem if you truly run the battery down to 0. I would say, get it close, but not to the point of dying.
As far as the German JB ROM, there's a patch to disable the phone stuff. I'm running it on a WiFi only 8013 and it's fine. Just read everything you can. Read the threads from the first page to the last.
Frankly, I've always been a custom ROM kind of guy. But the multi-view stuff is just so awesome, especially the JB version, that I'm sticking with stock. Changed the launcher, but sticking with stock.

Thanks for this. As it is getting late already, and I have work tomorrow, I may just stick to the ICS for now and get a couple basic apps and have a play around. You never know, the update may turn up!
I would just go for the JB one tonight, but I will need to find a step-by-step guide to help me, as I only have experience with the iOS jailbreaking process.

It was better with ICS. But it's still pretty good. Last week I watched 4½ hours of video and still had about 52% battery life left. It seems like every version of Android they come out with gets slightly worse with regards to battery life. But in this case I think the extras that JB adds makes it a worthwhile tradeoff. In JB the difference seems to come from the addition of Google Now. I'm tempted to turn it off since I really don't use it other than to shut up iPhone users
After some research, it seems rooting is even more complicated than I first thought... because of the "binary counter" that samsung now has on their devices.
It seems that you can reset this counter, but I think it would only be sensible to road-test the tablet as stock first, in case it has any obvious faults that need to be sorted under warranty...
Although I do hate being sensible.
Same. I usually stay stock/un-rooted for about a month.. or two.. then I can't help it and just want to root and do other stuff. But for now, I have all that I really need for my Note at the moment without needing to root.

hahaha, I felt the same way. I actually bought mine about a week before the Nexus 10 official announcement. I wanted to wait to make a decision on whether to keep the Note or send it back and get the Nexus 10. I was going to wait to root until I heard the full details and made the decision.
I was rooted about 2 hours after I took it home :laugh:

I rooted immediately, I have SG3 & 2, and I still have the galaxy 10.1 running a jb Rom. Guess I should of played with stock a little more, but really wanna see how the development is.

I'd be happy with stock (for a while at least), if the current stock was the jellybean update lol.
I will attempt to keep myself entertained with the differences between my old iPad1 and this fancy new tablet, and hope that distracts me until samsung release the UK JB.

Apparently you got your wish... JB for UK dropped today, unfortunately for all you guys with wifi only, you seem to be the redheaded freckle faced kid in the shade that can't come out to play because its for the 3g model only again....
Personally, I'd root that sucker and try the new JB update.... You won't be disappointed....

Yeh, I was initially tempted by the 3G model... But it would have been over £100 more expensive, plus a monthly subscription for data, and just isn't worth it.
Although its frustrating that Samsung will probably now wait another month before updating the wifi model... I don't think Germany even has it yet?
Couldn't you buy it outright? Then its up to you to either buy a plan, prepaid sim or use as a wifi model.... I personally prefer to get the 3g model simply because there may come a time when I need to use it.
I have a few 3g tablets, note 10.1, galaxy tab 7" and Acer Iconia A501.... Not all of these have sim cards but the potential is there if needed....

Well yes, but thats the point I was making... to buy it outright would have cost me an extra £100, and I simply dont have that much money to throw away.
If I was going to make a lot of use out of it, then fine... but I doubt I will. If I need internet on the move, I have my GalaxyS2,
Or, if for some reason I need internet on the move *specifically* on my tablet... I have my GalaxyS2 and tethering.
Saving myself over £100 means... well that £100 has bought me a really nice case, a 64GB microSD card, and a 4-in-1 adaptor for using USB/miniUSB/SD cards with the Note. And I still have £30 left over!
More than worth it, in my book. Just a shame we have t wait for the darned JB update so I can actually use the 64gb stick!
I have been running custom roms since I have had a Android phone. My wife has been stating how bad her Inspire has been. It is eating the battery a lot more. Just very slow and just not like how it was. I am just thinking it is the stock ROM after over a years of use acting up. I am trying to find her a nice rom that is cleaner and stable. I know I am not going to be updating her phone that often at all.
Does anyone know of a good Wife proof ROM? Thanks for any help on this.
These kind of questions can't answered in black and white form. If she likes the way the phone looks right now stock, try a rooted stock ROM with less bloatware or maybe some ICS ROMs. I'd say jellybean ROMs but some people there slow sometimes, but don't rule them out without trying a couple.
You'll just have to experiment and have her test one out for a couple days until she finds one she wants to stick with.
I would try Randomblame's 4.2 Jelly Bean rom! It's called Jelly Time, and It's by far the best in my opinion of the JB roms, and it's amazing! Since 4.2 is still in it's early stages, it is slow somewhat and there may be some bugs. If she wants a clean, refined version, go with r30 of his 4.1 JB rom, I was on it for the longest time, and it was amazing and perfect.
The phone has bad battery life as it stands, but with the JB rom I get better battery definitely. Games kill the battery, unless they are simple, like Doodle Jump. But if the phone stays asleep, it can go on for days, and with some music, facebooking, and internet browsing here and there, I can make it a full day with the rom.
I miss the look of the stock Gingerbread, but you adjust quickly to JB. ^.^
Are their any T Mobile based 4.4.4 Custom ROMs for the Note Edge. I only see foreign and Lollipop flavors. Would like to see a 4.4.4 that is lite on background apps so the battery life would be longer. I'm mainly going for longer battery life. I can only get about 5 hours of screen time
If you're rooted,couldn't you just get rid of the background crap?

I haven't seen a guide on how to and I don't have a rooted system.

I have a T-Mobile Edge and I unfortunately I can't tell you if it's still available to download because I haven't really looked back since I first flashed it, but I've been running a rom called Hyperdrive 4.4.4 since the first day I got this phone (on launch day) and it's STILL running strong! I recently started having issues with my battery and they wound up shipping me a new one for free, and when I got the new battery I was actually toying around with the idea of upgrading and trying out 5.1.1.. but now I'm glad I didn't!
I wound up just backing up all of my stuff and then I did the first factory reset I've ever done since I first flashed this rom, and I seriously couldn't be happier. Anyway just thought I'd throw it out there because it's just an awesome rom with tons of customization options, and at the same time it's been a steady freakin workhorse and all around probably the best experience I've ever had with a rom. Hope you can find it and try it out because it's worth it's weight in gold imo!

Thank you for the suggestion. Yes my phone is TMobile so I am looking for a 4.4.4 TMo ROM. Did you notice better battery life with this ROM? Oh and did the Hyperdrive ROM come with wifi calling? What is the procedure for installing a Custom ROM? On my NOte 2, there was a lot of resources and directions on going about getting a Custom ROM but sadly there hasn't been much here
