ROMS don't trigger the counter, reverting to stock via a .tar or flashing a different recovery is what trips it.

If you burning rom using cwm and your model tar(device :989 / official 989 tar) it didn't increase count.
But if you burn t989d(telus) official tar on your t989(t mobile) via odin, your counter will be increase. Its very fun.

Flashing recovery.img trips the custom binary flash counter? I thought the ONLY thing that was tripping the counter was Odin flashing a non official boot.img (kernel)?

in the past 2.5 years, i haven't ever seen a story where someone has been denied a replacement because their counter was tripped. i don't think it matters.
Samsung has given phones to CyanogenMod so I doubt they care too much if we mod our phones. I think its a way to tell how many of their returned phones have people like us using them.
My counter only goes up when flashing stock rom tar. I have a jig also hust in case , but mine definitely trips counter with stock ROM tar.

Well, I read something about a flash counter, and i searched around a bit and found this
It's a counter that tells how much times you've flashed custom stuff. If you have a counter different from zero it means that your warranty is voided. Anyway, you can get a usb jig from ebay to reset the counter to zero in case you need to get it to zero. So you shouldn't worry too much about it.

It counts the number if times you flash non-official firmware or kernel etc.
It increases only when you flash a non-official firmware or kernel etc.

And about how to check?
Just go to download mode.
(VOLUME-DOWN + HOME + POWER while the phone is off)

But I didnt see anything in the download mode which would tell me the flash counter?
Anyone tried to check on our phone or anyone knows how to find it?
There is no flash counter for sgsl.. the sgs2 and the note has it..

Oh, I see.
Ohk Thanks.
Well, a few days ago sgs2 users with no usb jig to reset the counter (like me ) rejoiced because chainfire made an app that removes the triangle (result of flashing un official kernel) and sets the counter back to zero (but requires and upgrade to ics first). But once you removed the flash counter, when upgrading to another ROM through mobile odin or CWM, the flash counter won't increase. It only increases if you flash through odin (PC version)

Well, that's really good that there is a way to reset the counter.
I was getting a bit edgy about it, since if there would be such a counter, the service centre would get to know about the flashes and modding and warranty would get void. But since there is no counter in our phone, no worries for now.
Hey guys, I'm new to the flashing scene so bare with me. Not to long ago I flashed my Infuse 4g device from gingerbread to ics, which for some reason made my recovery mode half disorientated (with weird colors)and half visible. Yet, difficult I was still able to maneuver and flash some tweaks here and there. However, I've now moved on to JellyBean, but now my entire recovery mode screen is disorientated (with weird colors) What should I do now?
You need the Gingerbread boot loaders to make it correct.

If you can successfully flash other items in Heimdall or Odin, it's really not that big of a deal. The Gingerbread Kies update and the prezreket UCLB3 leak also update the bootloaders. Just don't interrupt the flash. Crinkypops is correct, though, that a failed bootloader flash is about the only way to really brick an Infuse. So double check that you can flash other items using your chosen software. If you can, go for the bootloaders and don't let your dog or kid disconnect the USB cable for the few seconds it takes to flash.

Thank you guys so much, I was able to flash the bootloader using odin (because I don't trust myself using Heimdall yet) nonetheless, I'm happy that I can see my recovery mode screen now and all thanks to the XDA community.

I did a search but couldn't find anything specific to my question, so I'm posting g here. My apologies if it's been asked before.
I was looking at my phone status and I saw that under that information, it says "modified" (see screenshot). I am rooted, via Odin, and running CleanRom. As I was searching, I also found out that there's a flash counter? I, coming from an HTC and this is my first Samsung phone. Should I be worried about this?
I also read about Triangle Away and I looked it up on Play. It said it only works with some firmware. I am running TWRP recovery, and I assume a custom kernel was installed when I rooted, but I've never flashed a custom kernel because I don't see the need.
Thanks for any input you can give!

You should only worry about it when returning your phone to your carrier since you voided your warranty by rooting.
As far as I know, it only counts the number of times a custom firmware has been installed.
Flashing a ROM is okay, but using Odin will trip the flash count. So maybe it's only when using download mode.
It's nothing major to worry about, unless you want to return the phone. It's basically an indicator to vzw/Samsung that you've modified the firmware.
Sent from my CM10.1 SGS3 using Tapatalk
You should have used the rootdebugfs method as it doesn't require download mode thus eliminating the need of Triangle Away.

Triangle Away also checks the flash counter. I just use the app and it shows the flash counter as 0 on my phone. Like you I rooted and flashed a custom ROM.
Boot into download mode and hit the up volume key.
(Same process for using Odin)
(Also a thing to note.. Even though in down load mode your phone will say. Do not dissconect or turn off. Or whatever it says. But after you have checked the status of your flash count you need to pull battery to reboot. It will not harm your phone )
At the top left there will be some text.
You will be looking at the custom binary count or something along that line.
It will either say no, or have a number in parenthesis like this. (1)
If your binary count is equal to any number... Then use the app called triangle away from the play store. It is a paid app but well worth it for VZW gs3.
I can confirm it works Haha
Hit that thanks button if I helped you.

yes you can, you can also set it back to stock. I wouldnt worry aboutn rooting.
I brought my phone into Verizon with a rooted phone with AOSP theme on it with TWRP custom recovery running. she was on tech support on the phone with them telling her how to do a factory reset on my phone.. well they brought her into the recovery TRWP and she was like WTF!? lol and STILL they traded me out for a brand new in the boz sgiii lmao.
ive sent back i think every phone rooted, from my eris, to inc1, inc2, rezound, and even one gsiii lmao
i dont suggest it, but root yea sorrry for the rant lol
not taking a chance there is a guide to rstore to stock if needed.

This must be your first time rooting from all the questions. My suggestion to you is research research and then research again. Make sure your familiar with the process then just do it. I had so many questions and was hesitant to root my first time but I'm happy I did. Now whenever I get a new phone I root almost immediately . Imo there is just to many things you could do with your phone not to root.

Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
Sorry about the assumption. I wouldn't worry about the flash counter to much because there are ways to reset it if you think it is necessary. As long as you unroot before you take back to or even call Verizon for advice. Not sure about your data. I always turn auto sync off until I'm on wifi even though I have unlimited data I guess it's just a habit. Did you check data usage in settings. Also on beans Rom and synergy Rom in settings under device status it says normal. All the others say modified. Synergy does a great job at hiding stuff from Verizon.
