Flash Counter - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I did a search but couldn't find anything specific to my question, so I'm posting g here. My apologies if it's been asked before.
I was looking at my phone status and I saw that under that information, it says "modified" (see screenshot). I am rooted, via Odin, and running CleanRom. As I was searching, I also found out that there's a flash counter? I, coming from an HTC and this is my first Samsung phone. Should I be worried about this?
I also read about Triangle Away and I looked it up on Play. It said it only works with some firmware. I am running TWRP recovery, and I assume a custom kernel was installed when I rooted, but I've never flashed a custom kernel because I don't see the need.
Thanks for any input you can give!

You should only worry about it when returning your phone to your carrier since you voided your warranty by rooting.

As far as I know, it only counts the number of times a custom firmware has been installed.
Flashing a ROM is okay, but using Odin will trip the flash count. So maybe it's only when using download mode.
It's nothing major to worry about, unless you want to return the phone. It's basically an indicator to vzw/Samsung that you've modified the firmware.

You should have used the rootdebugfs method as it doesn't require download mode thus eliminating the need of Triangle Away.

Is there a way to check my flash counter?

Triangle Away also checks the flash counter. I just use the app and it shows the flash counter as 0 on my phone. Like you I rooted and flashed a custom ROM.

Boot into download mode and hit the up volume key.
(Same process for using Odin)
(Also a thing to note.. Even though in down load mode your phone will say. Do not dissconect or turn off. Or whatever it says. But after you have checked the status of your flash count you need to pull battery to reboot. It will not harm your phone )
At the top left there will be some text.
You will be looking at the custom binary count or something along that line.
It will either say no, or have a number in parenthesis like this. (1)
If your binary count is equal to any number... Then use the app called triangle away from the play store. It is a paid app but well worth it for VZW gs3.
I can confirm it works Haha
Hit that thanks button if I helped you.

No need to pay for triangle away, chainfire offers it free to xda members

[Q] rom manager and G2x

I was unable after searching to find a clear answer. Why is rom manager not able to flash clockwork on the g2x. Will it ever be possible or will we always have to update cw through NVflash?
An application cannot tamper with the recovery image of the device, no matter what. NVflash works with the processor directly.

If I installed CWM using NVFlash, should I still install ROM Manager from market once my phone is up and running?
I did the install after setting up the phone. There is really not much it does. If you try to check for a new nightly or ROM it always says to install the recovery. If you try to reboot to recovery, same thing. There just does not seem to be a lot of use around the application when it cannot do anything with the recovery at all.

Maybe. It does make things a bit more convienent, and doing the fake flash does not overwrite the true flash of NVFlash, or if it does just go back and flash via NV again. You can tell the difference because fake flash is orange while true flash is red.
I installed before I flashed true recovery, and the app still works. There's nothing Rom Manager does that CWM doesn't (unless you buy premium), but the app does it a bit more easily and saves you from having to navigate recovery mode.
Rom manager does not support dual core

You don't need to fake flash to use all the features. Just press menu and click manual flash override. It allows you to set your recovery in the app so it will let you use all the features.
Here is what I mean:

[Q] How to check the flash counter?

Well, I read something about a flash counter, and i searched around a bit and found this
It's a counter that tells how much times you've flashed custom stuff. If you have a counter different from zero it means that your warranty is voided. Anyway, you can get a usb jig from ebay to reset the counter to zero in case you need to get it to zero. So you shouldn't worry too much about it.

It counts the number if times you flash non-official firmware or kernel etc.
It increases only when you flash a non-official firmware or kernel etc.
Click to collapse
And about how to check?
Just go to download mode.
(VOLUME-DOWN + HOME + POWER while the phone is off)
Click to collapse
But I didnt see anything in the download mode which would tell me the flash counter?
Anyone tried to check on our phone or anyone knows how to find it?
There is no flash counter for sgsl.. the sgs2 and the note has it..
Edit: this is what it looks like (through download mode)

That's great for us!
Oh, I see.
Ohk Thanks.
Well, a few days ago sgs2 users with no usb jig to reset the counter (like me ) rejoiced because chainfire made an app that removes the triangle (result of flashing un official kernel) and sets the counter back to zero (but requires and upgrade to ics first). But once you removed the flash counter, when upgrading to another ROM through mobile odin or CWM, the flash counter won't increase. It only increases if you flash through odin (PC version)

Well, that's really good that there is a way to reset the counter.
I was getting a bit edgy about it, since if there would be such a counter, the service centre would get to know about the flashes and modding and warranty would get void. But since there is no counter in our phone, no worries for now.

Noob Verizon GS3 question

In the past i have rooted other phones without wiping the phone, however, from looking at the root methods for the Verizon GS3 It looks as though you have to flash a rom in the process of rooting it. Is it possible to root the Verizon GS3 without wiping data?

So If i flash the stock rooted rom using this method once the phone turns back on i will not notice anything has changed other than it now having root?

Yep, that's how it was for me. I was worried I would lose my data too, but I was pleasently surprised.

Since your not changing roms to a custom one but instead going stock to stock modded, you can dirty flash and you will be fine.
A dirty flash you don't loose your data.
Using the "Root66" method in the Verizon Development forum does not require a wiping of user/application data.
Not the first screen shot of Verizon saying they will unlock the bootloader, and this is one of a few places I can post.

Can you still transfer stuff over Odin, or is your computer not picking it up at all?
Also, are you using Desktops or Laptops to Odin?
This thread is epic. I would've reported it if there was a report button :-(

You are in download mode. Not recovery. Can not flash from there. Pull battery then power+home+volume up to get to recovery. Before flashing rom did you flash CWM. Did you unlock boot loader. Need to read Droidstyles guide before going any further. It has everything you need to know.

Please learn what you're doing before flashing and breaking your phone.
You're in download mode. Just pull your battery and put it back in.
This is what I get when I hold vol up, home an power.

You did not unlock your bootloader properly. Seriously. Please read up before you do more stuff to your phone and break it.
This is easy to recover from, just go back into downloading mode and flash the stock rom in ODIN.

if using the ez unlocker tool from the market, read the description, 1.4 was buggy and wasn't actually unlocking bootloaders correctly, so you had to download 1.2 from the link provided and use that to unlock your bootloader properly
Thanks, I will read up some more an terry.
