Next generation of windows phone looking nice. - General Topics

http://tinyurl.com/85fcb5k.
Although I have kind of distanced myself from Windows, phone and pc, the next iteration looks very promising. This of will increase competition which is always a good thing. Now if I could only pull myself from androids amazing ability of complete customization I'd actually consider a WP.
Of course this depends on if I like Windows 8 pc.

Its would be really hard to compete with the android platform. There's alot of distrust with windows. But they are nice.

Cool, will consider getting a wp device.
$1 gets you a reply

I know someone with a windows phone, they are pretty nice and run very smooth... I would get one BUT I love Android more
It will be interesting to see what the next gen looks like though, I will prob play with one in a store somewhere and Windows 8 looks pretty good and I liked it when I used the Developer Preview but that would just be for my pc..

The next version which could still be near a year out will get what Android has now.

The reason they run so smooth is because there's nothing on it.. give it 100mb of ram and it'd run as if we had 2gb of ram on our phone xD Haha but the phones are there I just don't feel like the idea is complete with wp7/8

I was interested in a windows phone too, but the lack of apps it has at the moment drew me away. I'm all for being different and what not, but not if it's going to cost me!

WinPhone's UI is the fuggliest thing I've ever seen. Looks like a Playskool or Sesame Street phone UI.

Really just not a fan of the LOOK of the OS itself, i'm sure it's lovely to use and the hardware will be just as good as any other, but still can't bring myself to use one

sure as hell looks a lot better than any of the crap skins these android handset makers come up with

Its kind of like sailing , a huge cruise liner takes miles to turn around where a little ski do can do it instantly. Microsoft is going to take a long time to turn its huge cooperation around towards the right direction in this new market. Where as Android like the ski doo is just living it up.

Will be interesting to see where/if it progresses. Too boring for me right now lol.

Is anyone else thinking about actually USING WebOS?

I am really starting to like WebOS a lot and since we know it is the tablets and not the OS that were scrapped, I have to wonder about a possible groundswell of new development for the native operating system.
I am not quite as excited as most about getting FroYo on this thing, I actually think it may be a downgrade, performance-wise. GingerBread struck me as slightly different than FroYo, but Honeycomb is sweet. I also have a Viewsonic Gtablet running the FlashBack Honeycomb ROM and it is pretty damn nice, but I find WebOS to be a little more elegant and refined feeling. Especially after installing PreWare and adding the performance patches and stuff.
I am not a developer, but there are a lot of them around here and quite a few of them either already got or will get a touchpad to play with. I am hoping that some of them will be impressed enough (or intrigued enough) to look at the WebOS SDK and PDK.
Since there are already drivers for full functionality within WebOS, I would think it would not be too arduous for some of these intrepid devs to port a few of the popular apps over for those sticking with it. There is also a web-based widget builder called Project Ares that looks interesting.
Anybody else? Bueller?
I would continue using WebOS if there's a way to use Android apps on it
Webos is probably my favorite tablet os now. The problem is there's no Apps for it. I bought the touchpad for my girlfriend yesterday and she said she loved it but after 10 minutes of just checking facebook and some websites she was like, ok what now?
They need more games optimized for it and better prices

Just read a site claiming to have an andriod dump from HP's tablet. There will be decent android roms in no time.

i'm kind of torn about using android on my TP.
i quite like the way webOS works.
i honestly can't understand why HP gave up on this thing. it's brilliant.
sure it's a little slow out of the box, but so was my HTC magic. a new rom fixed that.
it has fantastic support from the preware community.
i'm loving gestures and cards.
a 3G modem would've been nice (or a usb port to allow a dongle), but again not a big deal given that most phones these days can do wireless hotspot and 99.9% of the time if i have my tablet, i also have my phone. therefore it's always able to connect.
i'll admit the build quality leaves a bit to be desired, but for a first up effort it's pretty good.
the touchstone dock is brilliant.
i'm tempted to buy a second one so i'll have one at home and one at work.
i love android. (i'm somewhat of a fanboy)
i recommend it to friends all of the time. but after experiencing webOS i'm starting to wonder why.
EDIT: maybe HP will sell or licence webOS off to google and we can get the best of both worlds?
Since WebOS was released on the Pre few years ago I always wanted to try this OS as I mostly heard good comments about it and it looked good.
I must say that WebOS on a tablet is WOW! I love it.
I really hope new apps will be developed and that I will be able to continue to use WebOS.
I like my Android phone, but I would be happy continuing having a WebOS tablet.
I have heard that the HP Touchpad has a 3G and 4G wan aready on the chip and just waiting for software to activate. Just like the Nook color bluetooth that it never came with but was activated within Gingerbread.

I really hope we will get the dual boot option. I would love to use that UbuntuChroot on it while enjoying Froyo or GB
I've always been interested in webOS ever playing witha mates palm pre. The cheap touchpads seemed like a great way of getting a webOS device.
I don't understand why people want to remove webOS, however I can understand trying to port android apps to it.
I'm still waiting delivery of my touchpad, cant wait to get playing around with it.
Does anyone know if I can mess with the browser so I can access chrome webapps?
I bought for two reasons, price and Android. For $149 you cant go wrong, I thought of buying more to try and sell for a small profit but decided against it. My local Arrons had one in their store, but had access to 6 more WebOS looks cool, but I am not familiar with it at all. I really dont care to learn it being WebOS is done. If worse comes to worse and only the Android market/APPS will work on it then I will be happy Heck, who am I kidding, at such a low price I am happy no matter what!

The point is, WebOS is not "done." In fact, it sounds like HP is planning to put a lot more into it.

Yep, WebOS development will continue.
I really don't understand the cry for Android either. Froyo is not that amazing, Gingerbread isn't that great either. Heck, I have owned quite a few Honeycomb tablets (Xoom, rooted Nook Color, Dell Streak 7) and none of them impressed me.
I get that people here overwhelmingly like Android. But the only merit I can see for putting Android on this guy is for the apps. And, lets be honest, anything besides Android 3.X isn't even optimized for a large display like the touchpad. The Gmail application for example is just a giant list of emails. The WebOS email interface is leagues ahead because it actually takes advantage of the screen size by layering slide-panels instead of just being a giant list of messages!
WebOS is an awesome operating system. The only things holding it back to this point have been total garbage hardware (the Pre was trash) and a lack of developer interest. With HP pushing out hundreds and hundreds of thousands of these tablets in days, its safe to say that development will speed up on the WebOS front. Applications will start to trickle in faster, and things will improve.
The desire to have Android, yet alone a non 3.0 Android, on this thing just seems silly. But whatever, each to his or her own. I for one can appreciate the qualities of WebOS and will keep using it since it is a polished, tablet friendly operating system. After the "oh wow look what I did" factor of having Android 2.X on a tablet wore off, I realized non-Honeycomb Android on a tablet really sucks.
I already have an Android Tablet...it's cool.
I bought this for a cheap price, to have as a "coffee table" device for cruising the net and checking email. Maybe a youtube video once in a while.
AND...when you register the device you still get 50GB of cloud storage through box.net. I'm looking forward to using mine and have no intentions of putting any other OS on it...
I am a huge android fan, but Ill admit that after using the TP for a few days, WebOS is hands down a better tablet OS. Its just so much more structured. Thats why Im looking forward to see what comes out of the Palmdroid project. From my understanding, theyre trying to port the Dalvik VM over to WebOS which will allow android apps to run in "cards".
Been checking this every day for the past week now

WebOS is dead Install Android 3.2 Honeycomb
Haha no, not at all. This is the worst OS I've ever touched. The OS is overall sluggish and not made for a fluid experience what so ever.
I just had mine fail to download a 30MB System update about 10 or so times.
Browsing the poor apps in the market takes a minute to load each individual apps page.
The pre-installed "apps" are a link to go download it on the market which takes the aforementioned minute load of the page.
The best app would have to be the youtube app that opens up the browser to Youtube.com, absolutely ingenious!
It has. . nothing. On it. I can't even find apps if there were good apps, you can't go to the top of free apps.. there is either top, paid, or free search tabs but not a top free.
Even the browser leaves me yearning for more as I sit there and watch the checkered white boarder all over.
Is anyone else thinking about actually USING WebOS?
Yes, me!
Im running psycho-f15c-kernel-touchpad_3.0.2-41 on my ToychPad at 1.9GHz 100% stable! This thing is faaaaaaaaaaaaaaast!
Best and fastest Tab ever and WebOS is simply extraordinary... what a loss that that the best Tab EVER is discontinued and the most elegant and accomplished OS for a tablet has been sentenced to death. I have an ipad2 that I really like and a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7" that I use as my phone running Android 2.3.
Nothing touches WebOS, nothing! And nothing touches the speed of the Touchpad at 1.9Ghz! Ill use and love the Touchpad for as long as I can can, even iwht limited apps and an OS that is frozen in time. What a great loss, this is just so amazingly great! If HP had launched this a year ago and seriousely wanting to make it a success, this would be for sure the ipad killer... my a million miles.. really sad, but happy I have one and that works so well.
Thank guys for making this thing work so well and fast. XDA is the best community on the internet, period!
I just got my touchpad in the mail and have been playing with it for the last couple of hours. Here is my first impression:
wow, webos is pretty impressive. I owned and used iphones, ipads, android phones and tablets extensively and I can say that webos has the simplicity and user friendliness of ios and the multitasking and openness of android. Kind of best of both worlds. If it had the dev support of ios and android, it would certainly be better than ios and a huge competitor to android.
it is such a shame that it is almost dead. HP should have sold these tabs at $250 at launch ($50 below manufacturing cost) just like they do with the consoles and build dev support. Once established, they would make a ton of money off of their app market by selling media and apps just like apple.
introducing this tab at the same price point as the already established and ridiculously popular ipad with no apps and dev support was a quick and sure way to failure.
Such a shame. I really would have liked to see a mature webos platform as a strong competitor.
ps. I am writing this comment on my touchpad 32gb while listening to grooveshark on another browser window. The speakers are pretty loud and have great audio quality. Too bad Hulu just blocked access.
ps2. I really like the usa today app a lot. Nice job with the design and the use of gestures. That is exactly what touchcreen apps should be like
Defiantly liking WebOS alot but until more development takes place atm I will move to android when it surfaces.

Nokia concept, the future of phones

thoughts? i think a bendy phone would kick arse.

LOL
agreed. 8, 9, 10.
Lol I remember that episode of the office. Triangular tablet, fictional and basically useless
Lol... Symbian
Max. (From my Galaxy 2)
It looks good for the simplistic phone user but not your typical smartphone user.
>_<
natural user interface? that thing would need one heck of a manual. there's a reason babies can use android/iOS - its about as simple and natural as it gets, until it starts tapping into brainwaves. i would NEVER use this, no matter how "natural" or "futuristic" it is.
Damn that's sweet
Haha that is very nice!
This was about to happen with the Microsoft partnership.
I'm not convinced that this would replace my phone either, especially with that shape. But I do love the idea.

One thing they need to learn fast is that the only way they can compete with world of androids and iphones is to make their operating system an open source like android. Otherwise they will stand no chance.
That is what has kept android in the game against iphones.
im still waiting for that wat-like phone kind of like what the power rangers have xD
nano-tech, yes.
This is like that Nokia Aeon project that never came true, don't this ever will.
If that comes out on the market iOS would be goin down big time LOL

The way wp7 is integrated I doubt you will win. I gave my daughter my old Samsung Focus and it's smooth and fast. I like both OS's for sure but I'm sure the windows booth will have the phone setup for easy access via the tiles. If you do the challenge, let us know how it goes

Pretty sure this is over, but most android phones can beat it. You just have to be ready, practice and set up your phone beforehand.
Its funny, windows mobile started it all, but when the iPhone and android iOS hit. Windows got knocked out and basically have to start out green. If only they would of stuck with windows mobile 6.5....
SkyRocket [ICS The Real Thing Rom]
yea it was over, but the terms were saying it had to be like out of the box stuff....so meaning we couldnt flash like a custom rom or something, ive only read people with Stock Galaxy Nexus could beat it....its a race from turned off to pulling up like weather...which takes the nokia phone like 15 seconds to boot up
There were several different types of tests and all were geared towards WP7's strengths.
It was an advertising campaign, so I would expect them to do well against most devices.

It was not a test of hardware, it was a test of software and integration.
Something MS did very well with regards to WP7.
And sorry, WP7 does do social integration better than Android.
I own devices running iOS, WP7 and Android and WP7 has the social part nailed down.
Sure, you can find third party solutions for Android, but that's not the point of these tests.
I was not impressed with the Lumia or its Windows operating system. I demo'd one and picked up the Skyrocket instead (I was going to preorder a Lumia a week or so ago because of the $99). The handset was heavy, the touchscreen was not as responsive and it didn't help that it died in my hands. I thought the ATT rep was really good. She pulled a Skyrocket out (her own personal phone) and said I would not be happy with Windows mobile if I was used to Android..(coming from an Atrix that made my mind up and I am happy with my decision)

I wouldn't say the challenge itself was a scam more that some store employees/managers chose to be douche bags and not follow the written rules.
Even the creator of the challenge, Ben Rudolph said some stores were not playing fair.
I think with Nokia WP is finally getting some traction, especially at the price point they're selling it at. It was a smart move for Nokia to go WP rather then Android, it's easier for them to stand out. With Android they would just drown, among the sea of devices.
As far as the challenge goes it's not a scam but clever marketing. It reminds me of the old Pepsi Challenge campaign from years ago, funny how everyone shown in the ads always chose Pepsi
I've played with WP7, and it is a pretty slick OS. That said, these challenges are stacked in WP7's favor: social integration/efficiency.
It's not like they're gonna ask you to go to the market and download Instagram or other apps unavailable on WP7. Or pull up turn by turn navigation from google maps, or change your wallpaper, etc. etc.

Anyone tempted to give WP8 a blast? (Lumia 920)

Well?
I've had iPhones, and I have had lots of Android phones ranging from Nexus One to my current Galaxy Nexus.
Android has come on a hell of a long way, but it still lacks a little polish for me.
None of the current crop of Androids really interest me that much (but I am looking forward to seeing the next big HTC and Sony), the new LG Nexus really doesn't do it for me (just looks like the GNex, still a crap camera by all accounts).
However the Lumia 920 has caught my eye. Its a desirable piece of kit, and with Windows 8 just around the corner too, it should start to see much better support and development. I am definitely looking forward to Windows 8. So it kind of makes sense to try on a phone too.
I reckon although the Lumia's specs are not class leading, WP7 was a very quick OS on my GFs Omnia 7 (considering how crap the specs were on that).
Anyone else tempted to give it a shot?
Yeah, for me it's also between the Lumia 920 and I'm also looking forward to BlackBerry 10. Both offer things that haven't be done before. Hopefully they will be reasonably priced.

I want to try WP8 because personally, I like Windows 8 and I think WP8 will be just as good as Windows 8. I like the look of the Lumia 920 but it just doesn't cut the mustard for me... I'd rather by a cheaper Windows Phone to get a taste of WP8.
Looks like WM8 will gain a lot of market (in the future). The story is worth observing though.
I was looking forward to WP8... but it still looks like WP7 with a bit more customization.
Ill pass

There's just too much between Android/iOS and Windows Mobile for me, will it ever gain the support it needs to be a valid competitor? I just don't see it happening I'm afraid.
I currently have a lumia 900 and what really breaks the phone is the lack of apps. Of course there's plenty of decent apps but there's still a lot of work to be done, for example: no pandora app, I use citibank and no app for that, etc.
I really like the OS itself and the how different it is to say iOS or android, but unfortunately the lack of apps makes me want to go to android.
It's kind of a vicious cycle, developers don't take into consideration WP because of people, people don't go WP because of fewer devs.
Not sure what microsoft is planning, but I've had the phone since it came out and there really hasn't been much change.
I was excited about WP8 but less so now.
I have had enough of Microsoft on the computer space. I don't want them in the mobile area. Actually, if Google were to create a real desktop OS I'd be all over it too.
HTC butterfly from japan is the phone I'm looking at. WP8 has no apps at all. It may of changed but my gf tried out a lumia 900 for a week and hated it.

[DISCUSSION] iOS 7

Being the centerpiece of the Android community, I would like to see what my fellow Nexus owners think of iOS 7. I did not create this thread for "flame wars" or any thing like that but rather a place where we can all maturely discuss our thoughts on Apple's new mobile operating system.
Personally I think it looks very interesting! Certainly a change of pace from where they have been going since the beginning of iOS and that's a good thing. I do believe they took a lot of cues from Android though including the look and feel, notification drawer, and the control center. The thing I'm most excited over though is what Google has in store for us to top it (and you know they will).
That's why I love technology, competition creates awesome new things for us consumers. What are your thoughts?
Here's a YouTube video of it just in case you didn't see it yet:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKibbvhajOA
Looks very Android-esque, esp. the messaging app and the new "style" looks very much like MIUI, however I think there's already a thread open regarding this
Last iOS7 thread was closed, let's see how this one fairs.
On topic:
My thoughts are that I don't care how they make the OS look, or even function. Until they open up their OS and make it more flexible, I will never buy a device that runs it. I don't need them to tell me what I can and can't do with the phone I've already purchased. Then again, most Android phones have bloatware put in by OEMs and are just as restrictive. Guess that's why I bought a Nexus 4, browse the Nexus 4 forums, and genuinely enjoy AOSP. I don't exclusively run AOSP, but the fact that I can, and do, switch between ROMs is why I won't be using iOS7.
It looks like MIUI....

Can I click on downloadable links and download what I want?
Can all apps see/use a downloaded file?
No? It's still for girls then.
I don't see why these threads keep getting closed just like the 4.3. Its related so ....anyways. I do applaud them for trying. But in the end their os is still closed. You get what you get and you can't change anything about it. When you buy and android phone you get more . you can make it yours . as for innovation, under all the new icons, new colors, new notification center, etc, the os is technically unchanged. But you know what, people will buy it. Some people like being told what's cool and what to buy . some don't like modifying and just want something that gets up and goes. While that may be good for some it may not be good for others.

I'd say it's starting to look more like Android, and the iPhone users who preferred the "iPhone look" (Like the missis) agreed that she won't upgrade as it's begun to stray, and then she'd rather just buy and Android phone and let me set it up for her - if those are the kinda looks she's looking for.

Good to see it from a users viewpoint. I guess they have grown into that look
It's good that they changed the UI and it does look somewhat nice, but I couldn't help feeling I was watching i/o again.
From a Nexus 4 bathing in Jelly Beans
My girlfriend and I watched the whole conference, she has an iPhone 5, and I have to admit I was impressed with the overhaul. The semi-transparency and the white mixed with vivid colors will look great on her phone and iPad. The iPad is where I'm really looking forward to seeing it. It's about time Apple stepped up and really pressure Google to make Key Lime Pie the best OS it can be.
That being said. Not to start a debate... I personally wouldn't leave Android for iOS 7. I like my Nexus 4 too much... At least until the Nexus 5 comes out.

Although I applaud Apple for overhauling the look of their iOS (it looks better than iOS 6 for sure) it looks like they taken features from android/blackberry/win8 and just complied it into one. Does it impress me? No it doesn't, Android is still by far more advanced than iOS will ever be and this is coming from someone who had the iPhone 4. I got tired of not being able to customize anything and have to use the phone just like Apple wants people to. Does it impress those people who use apple iPhone and apple products only? Yes it does it probably does.. I was disappointed, I was expecting Apple to come up with something new I guess but of course they didn't. "Innovative"..
I'm not one to bash Apple but....
It's like android, blackberry and win8 had a 3 way marriage and it created iOS7.
Although, their Mac Pro looked interesting.

I think the new OS screamed "Android!!!!!!" and the new Safari reminds a bit Google Chrome for Android, specially the card-tabs (which looks identical to me).
But I also don't care if they are being inspired by Android, after all, that's a good thing, right? Back in the days people would say Android used to copy Apple, now it's going the other way!!! AND it was about time Apple did some major changes to iOS so I'm happy for'em
