White Sensation with ICS in March - HTC Sensation

So I'm guessing, if this is true, that HTC has an actual, ready to be released ICS and hopefully this means our developers will have a working, non-test release rom soon:

ATT Official Captivate Froyo Released

Supposedly Froyo was released for a few short hours...
http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/16/samsung-captivate-on-atandt-gets-android-2-2-all-that-froyo-hasn/
Did anybody get the download before they pulled it?
there are already many more threads about this than there needs to be. froyo was never officially released.
Sent from a phone, playing a phone, disguised as another phone.
My fail... I can't find the "delete thread" option anywhere.
Its ok. The information seems to be true.
I don't recall seeing this info.
I think an important question to consider is just what exactly does an official AT&T release of Froyo do that the devs here have not accomplished already? Even if the release is official, it's not like it would be a great idea for those with good custom ROMs to step backwards. IMHO, the jump backwards to an official Froyo release laden with bloatware just isn't worth the time and effort.
Better question is why this thread is still alive in the Dev section.

Correct drivers, a kernel optimized for our specific model, modem designed for the North American region, etc.

There was no file download associated with this - it was just instructions on how to download it through Kies. The page mentioned that you could get the file but there was never a link to it. The original timestamp on it was 11-2-2011 (Feb 11, 2011 for us US people).

Yup, actual source code from our devices can improve all the custom ROMs in here.
Honestly, I doubt an official Froyo release can beat many of the roms here. So, while it would be an awesome step in the sense that we AT&T Captivate owners finally get our own version of Froyo, it'll still take some work by devs to get that up to par with the custom roms.

Yes. And it was a page that had been up for quite a while that was actually just a cut & paste for the Vibrant instructions.
Engadget dun goofed. They came across the meaningless page and foolishly jumped to the wrong conclusion without checking their facts.
Bad news is that if there ever is an update, it might have to be done with Kies.
Still waiting Samsung...
ha i laughed when i saw this thread, people will be on honeycomb before we even get froyo!
Waited and Waited
I waited to long. I just flashed Cognition 3.4. I thought I was gonna wait til it came out but after this post I finally gave up. I'll flash back to stock when it comes out. When ever that is!
Amen to honeycomb! And forget the "official" update. Thanks to xda and some world class developers this is like many have said nothing more than something to laugh at. Keep up the awesome work. I sure look forward to the future of xda and the devs!
Sent from my captivate on a rock in the middle of the ocean!
I have been lurking this site for a few weeks now, following all the chatter about whether or not AT&T is going to deliver Froyo to the Captivate. I am a Captivate owner and just an hour ago I decided to forget about getting a stock Froyo build. So, I loaded my first ROM... Andromeda 2.2. That ROM is excellent and beats out Eclair 2.1 hands down. I don't think I will be turning back to a stock ROM now.
So long to waiting on AT&T and Samsung to pull their heads out of their arses and deliver product. I have the goods now.
Edit: A huge thank you to XDA and the team of developers working on Andromeda. They have turned out an excellent ROM.
the true update link is in the thread i just posted.

anyone still on cm7, waiting for cm9? passing on all current ICS roms

anyone still on cm7, passing on all current ICS roms, and waiting for CM9?
I've been using CM7 since it came out. I flashed virt. quatto just to see what ICS looks like, then went back to CM7.
post here if you are like me!
ive been waiting for a stable CM7 on the sensation for over a year now... CM7 alpha10 is pretty close but still not a daily driver.. i dont see a stable CM9 on our phones within the next year.. there are some good AOSP ICS roms though like Virtuous Inquisition which will have to do for now. ever since Samsung hired Cyanogen, you pretty much need a Samsung phone (Galaxy Nexus) for good CM support
the only reason i am using a Sensation right now is because it is the only high end phone (dual core) that supports my $5/mo tzones plan, else I would probably have a Galaxy S2 or the Nexus right now since i much prefer CyanogenMod
I'm in same situation
several past phones (Desire GSM, Atrix 4G) and current Pyramid are on CM7.1
I use Automatic Backlight feature, it's absent in other ROMs, I like Dialer and Contacts in CM.
Tried multiple ICS ROMs but I am unable to use them. Cannot remove contact's pictures from contact list (I don't use concact pictures at all), no adjustable automatic backlight, Volume rocker Wake and so on.
I do not use Google Account at all, all programs I install manually after flashing ROM. No market app, no Gmail, no GTalk. No Sence.
CM is the best for me
I have many phones flashed to CM7.1 and tried the alpha 10 for sensation too. But there are many lacks (e.g. reboot when recording video, battery after 10 hours down to 20%) so I went back and waiting for CM9.
This is my own opinion, I don't believe well even get an alpha build of any kind from kmobs at this point of development even in the next year or two years. I asked him about it an he said he was compiling it at that time.
It tells me a lot by that response from him. That he is a perfectionist that want to do everything by himself an I'm pretty sure that he's gotten help by cm team. And that since he got a GN and amaze he may be too busy to focus on sensation. He said he isn't working on those two but I mean if you had to pick between those two and sensation I might pick them.
The best way to get fixes is by yes providing him log cats towards certain issues but at the same time having the source helps so it can pinpoint the source of the issue in the build.
Many devices have already been merged and I think one or two were made after the sensation was released. Whether its fair or not he has the most updated source for pyramid and we as the people only have nothing but watch and wait

I'm still on CM7 and it's not looking good for CM9:

I know we're not paying him or anything, but why can't he at least give us an update instead of these "mystery" posts?

WOW dude no google account? That sucks because if you had one you could easily edit or delete your contact info by signing into google from your computer. You do know that android is google right? I think you would be much happier with a flip phone.

I agree. Kmobs is still a kid afterall. Hes in school and needs to focus on college if you ask me. He bought a GN for $500.00 out of pocket despite telling us how great his sensation was running his build of ICS. Even though it is his money, its pretty irresponsible for a college student to do. Needing a new phone is one thing, but wanting something newer to play with is another.
I dont think it will take a year to get CM9 to the sensation, as I feel Kmobs will eventually turn over what he has done to someone else on the CM team and they will finish it for us. All his G+ posts seem to focus on the fun he is having with his GN.
Yea its free, but it would be nice of him to turn over what he has to another respected developer in the spirit of open source and all...If he hasnt got the time for CM9, then maybe someone else does. Keep in mind, CM is thinking about starting a for profit marketplace. It would be good business to get CM9 out for the maximum number of phones if they want the maximum number of customers. The sensation might not be all that popular though...
Maybe someone from the CM team could speak to him about turning over the project?

after today I don't think I will go back to cm7 again. I have been running vi all this month and currently on v3.0.0 and it will do until something better comes out.
yes, I do believe knob abandoned our phone and do not expect any release from him. January is almost over and we are left in the dark. The promise I made to myself is never to get a non nexus phone again. I will just wait a little bit to see if they release the 32gig GSM version.

Off Topic. Thread title is "anyone still on cm7, waiting for cm9? passing on all current ICS roms"
I could personally care less about CM9. I am running CM7 now and it works fine. I considered flashing an ICS ROM but they all suck right now. Personally if there was a pure vanilla Android ROM (Gingerbread or ICS) I would run that. If CM9 is the closest I will get to AOSP ICS then I guess I will use that whenever (if??) a stable release ever comes out for the Sensation. To be honest I might even be using a Nexus by that time since development for the Sensation is basically dead.

I counted seven flavours of Sensation ICS ROMs discussed and most are available somewhere online. Only the kmobs 'official' CM9 seems to be lost this year.
On Rootzwiki I asked if the following list was up to date. Here it is. Some exist and some are not, but all are Sensation-specific ROMs in development or possible development.
Will we get up to TEN 'unique' Sensation ROMs soon?
1. TripNRaver already has released three betas of his AOSP ROM for Sensation, over at Modaco.
2. HTC Leaked ICS ROM. Lots of tuning and updates of the major 'brands' of Sensation ROMs at XDA Sensation Developers forum, for 4.03 ICS and Sense 4.0 leak.
3. Virtuous Quattro (AOSP) ported to Sensation at XDA Developers forum.
4. MIUI developer petitioned to release a Sensation ICS MIUI (250+ votes for it). 新年快樂 !
5. TripNRaVer previously mentioned he could do an ICS MIUI port once the CM9 Sensation ROM was working.
6. TripNRaVer yesterday released his own CM9 beta ROM for Sensation.
7. Cyanogenmod 9 team (Keyan Mobli aka kmobs, others?) may be still developing the CM9 ROM, unless there has been any announcement otherwise. No recent news in 2012, though.
8. ? Anyone have another ROM for Sensation that's not a variant of or based on one of the above?
9. ?
10. ?
TripNRaver released a beta CM9 over at MoDaCo, fyi.

There are only four "distinct" ICS ROMs available. Trips CM9 leak, the two Virtuous builds, and MAYBE Android Revolution. Everything else is just a themed version of one of the above.
yup still waiting. most ics AOSP roms arent fully stable.

Android 2.3

I realise that the alpha/beta of ICS has been released but why is it there is no development on 2.3 roms at the moment. Sure people want to have the best ICS rom but seriously I am sick of the constant crashes and "this application isnt supported by your device" on the Android market.
Hopefully the developers focus on the actual stable roms and not silly pre-releases.

To each his own! I completely disagree, I don't understand what you're asking for, 2.3 roms seem good to go and stable as it is. What else do you want done? Also, I for one don't consider it "silly" pre-releases. Even though ICS has yet to be complete it's far better than what GB has been for me. ICS is also the one that needs some work on, hence the crashes and stuff (I don't experience any at all). If GB is working without crashes and is STABLE, what updates are you looking for? If it's working great, then you don't need to update! Although there are some apps which are yet compatible, it doesn't affect users such as myself.

Considering I haven't experienced a single crash on Baad's InsertCoin ICS ROM, I have no idea what you are talking about. I suppose one could also question why the Windows Mobile and Palm ROM development forums haven't seen much action...what more is there to do to working stable ROMs? Or better yet, why bother

Speaking for myself, I'd like a stable (i.e. not alpha) release of CM7 for my new Sensation. I agree with the OP, if the CM devs are blocked waiting for HTC to release ICS, why not polish off a stable CM7 release? I'm in the process of pulling down source to see if I can help. I'm an embedded Linux developer during the day, but being new to android development and only having one phone (and a wife and kids), I'm not expecting anything but getting my feet wet by the time ICS comes out on this phone. I'm grateful that CM exists, just wish there was a non-alpha mod for my new phone.

Well I guess they did not want to waste time polishing CM7, where in 1-2 months time, everyone will be expecting them to release CM9 for sensation. Let's say they release a super stable CM7 by the end of Feb, people will be using it for only a month before switching to CM9. Might as well wait for ICS.

Speaking for myself again, I'd prefer to use a solid CM7 until CM9 is just as stable. It was more than 1-2 months before CM7 stable enough to put on my MT4G. But I understand it is the culture here to regularly flash new stuff, even if there's no good reason to, and I'm not knocking that, I've done it too. Which is why I'm either returning this phone for a SGS2, or getting to work on my own (wow, 4.5 hours to sync the CM GB repo!).

While waiting for the CM code to sync, I went over to htcdev.com and clicked their comments link to "Tell HTCdev what YOU want". I explained that I would like full source code for my HTC phone like LG and Samsung provide for their phones (at least the diffs from the open source code). I didn't really expect to get it, and was not surprised when the reply was no - they only release the Linux kernel source because they're bound to by license. But it made me realize that I had purchased the wrong phone. So I returned it. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the SGS2 is quite functional and performant out of the box, and the source easily available from Samsung. So long HTC...

Not only is the DHD getting ICS, but so is the Thunderbolt which is also essentially identical spec-wise. Because of the MT4G's custom version of Sense, I doubt we'll ever see ICS officially.

Like I said before. Were not getting ics officially on the mt4g. The reason because the mt4g is a T-Mobile official branded device. Hence the lame mysense that it came with.
I don't think there will be an official ics version for this as it is old now.

This... and T-Mobile seems to have shifted away from Sense to LG's POS framework with the myTouch line, so as far as T-Mobile goes, we're pretty much at EOL. Any official update we get would be a treat.
Regardless, HTC plans to officially update the HTC Rhyme, Desire HD, Thunderbolt.. all of those are powered by the MSM8255 chipset with that sexy 7x30 kernel, Adreno 205, and 1GHz Snapgragon CPU. We probably wouldn't have to do much once they all get their updates. Of course though, only greif we should have is camera. Possibly video decoding too.

It's because Desire HD is a flagship device, whereas myTouch 4G is just some random ol' device T-Mobile made after they saw the Desire HD and release that the myTouch 3G Slide wasn't cutting it anymore.

I am not trying to be a jerk, but an official ICS rom would be nice as all the others especially for this phone are extremely buggy, and in my opinion unusable at this time. There are too many bugs, crashes, slowdowns and things that plainly don't work (like you know the basic function of calling people and people actually hearing you, or it actually working.)
I am sorry if this sounds pissy but I am just sick of these ROM's not working, and having to constantly wipe and re flash my phone over and over again, and trying out different ROMs. Finally finding one that works, I am just going to stick with MIUI until ICS officially works correctly and is basically bug free. it's just not worth to upgrade for it flashiness.
I know the DEV's on these boards try hard, DON'T GET ME WRONG. I have been on here since the Android G1 came out, and remember MANUALLY rooting that thing from the telnetD command. It's not that I don't have patience, but at this point with all the work DEV's do on phones now I can't understand how so many ROM's are still really buggy, and get constantly broken in an update, please release working firmware.
I understand that ultimately the DEV's are not responsible for us flashing with unofficial firmware, but you are still releasing YOUR firmware to the public for people to use, to get recognition. This is a catch-22 scenario, where yes your are not responsible, but almost expect people to use your firmware for either recognition or donations. I can't decide who to donate to anymore either, there are just too many DEV's working on too many things at once, stick to ONE ROM. Not five at a time. It's not realistic.
I think at this point, instead of every DEV working individually on there own ROM's, I think every DEV should just combine brain power and make the ultimate ICS ROM. At this rate, a stable ICS ROM will not be out for months. The source code was released in November, and it is now February, and the same bugs in ICS (camera not working), are still here.
It's not only that, constantly re doing my APPS gets really annoying. I am not paying for Titanium Backup, when I am downloading FREE firmware. Every firmware at this point, like MIUI, should have a BACKUP and RESTORE option built in for APPS, so when you do this over and over again, you don't have to pay for Titanium Backup, or re download your APPs, configure your WIFI, set your CPU, redo your menu options, redo your desktop, redo your shortcuts, your widgets, your background etc. etc. etc. over and over again.
I understand this is a different framework, but seriously now. Please stop releasing almost unusable firmware. I am kind of sick of being a beta tester, I do not mind reporting bugs. But at this rate I will destroy my NAND on my phone from wiping and flashing so much. Which CAN happen, and eventually will happen. If you seriously want me to be a beta tester for your firmware, give me a secondary pone and I will be happy to constantly flash and reflash the phone over and over again to test this.
I am sorry if this sounds *****y, but it just starting to get on my nerves. I mean it comes to a point, is this phone even worth it? I can see DEV's are mainly focusing on the newer phones, I do not blame them. But at this point if you want to release your work and have people see how good you are at what you do, ask people to be a beta tester and send them a testing phone so they don't have to risk destroying there phone.
Please forgive me I don't want this to be perceived as trolling but, I have to get this out before I get this out more immaturely somewhere else. I am trying to explain and get things out as professionally as I can.
Thanks
Nafé

I appreciate your frustration and impatience for a fully functional ICS ROM. I'm sure most of us (including the dev) are in this boat. I do take exception to you complaining about being a beta tester. This is your choice. The dev has not misled you in any way as to the code quality:
[ROM/WIP][AOSP] CynogenMod 9.0.0 Alpha [ICS][4.0.3][02.14.2012]
[ROM][ICS][Beta][2.2.3] MIUI V4 || Unofficial Port for MT4G [UPDATED 02.07.2012]
[ROM/WIP][02-14-2012][AOSP] Virtuous Quattro Beta r1 [ICS][4.0.3]
[ROM][ICS][AOSP][Beta 7.1] .: :: Creamed Glacier :: :. [UPDATED 02.07.2012]
It sounds like you are not a good candidate for being an alpha/beta tester and you may want to hold off until you see "Alpha","Beta", or "WIP" (work in progress) disappear from the ROM titles.

Dev Forum Needs ICS

Who else agrees that the developer forum needs some rejuvenation? It seems very slow there with no substantial recent releases..
And also, by the time ICS is officially released at the end of march, I feel that the recent releases of high-performance HTC phones (such as the velocity 4G, etc. here in Australia) will also slow development on the Sensation as the devs move on to the newer phones. Hopefully this wont be the case though

You're kidding right? We've had ICS for months now..
Uh, are you on the right planet? Virtuous Inquisition, InsertCoin 4.0.3, and tons more...
I mean the full ICS release, not the beta
Where all the bugs are gone (hopefully), kernel sources are released and more stability is with us

HTC is releasing the official sensation build in a week. There's no point in working on leaks when a stable build is going to be released soon.

That's kinda what I've been trying to say, we need the full ICS release for more substantial development to occur lol

I feel obliged to respond to the first bit to that.
1. We can't improve on the bugs HTC had in test RUU's but we can add in features and fix some stuff, for instance dice app not working on XE base. I fixed that on my ROM, slow SD-card speed, baadnewz fixed, APM capychimp did, leedroid tweaks j4n87 did so how you can say developement is slow I don't know, all you need to do is look in change log foe ROM's (mine was updated a few days ago with some pretty serious fixes)
Come on dude, we are all working on stuff but we also have jobs and lives outside xda

I hadn't realised this.. I've only been on a few roms and stock with the beta ICS, as I assumed that the bugs that are in the test build can't be fixed yet. I'm sorry for being ignorant but hopefully the full release will help devs such as yourself by having alot less bugs for you to deal with
Our development scene isn't that bad compared to some phones and new phones doesn't mean development automatically stops. My last two phones nexus one and desire HD still have active development going on even though the phones are getting old now.

and what bugs? the most recent leak is as good as any official release I can remember.
devs always move on - new devices attract people to buy them etc.
we've probably got 6 - 12 months of solid development left imho.
look out for sense 4 being available on our device once the Ville rom leaks.
