[Q]Can i wipe data/cache and install rom through adb? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

In short my power button is broke, so i need to flash cyanogen so i can use volume to wake my device, but my phone is unusable but i think i can get into ADB, so can i?

have you tried using touch recovery http://clockworkmod.com/rommanager
i guess this would only work if you can get into bootloader mode

I tried that initally but i got a Status 7 error, however ill try again now

did you dl recovery today because the beta one from yesterday gave that error but if you redownload from clockwork site today it is updated. i got the error yesterday but i dl'd one from today and didnt get error flashing rom
---------- Post added at 02:58 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:56 PM ----------
are you using fastboot to flash recovery?

Im trying to use flashboot to do it but whenever i do fastboot flash recovery.img i get an error
Unknown partition 'recovery.img'
error: cannot determine image filename for 'recovery.img'
so i cant even flash a recovery lol.

The correct command is "fastboot flash recovery NameOfRecoveryHere.img"
Sent from my ice cream powered Nexus S

That may be why it didnt work lol. I have managed to install cyanogen, i discovered i can use the search key instead of power whilst navigating the menu however to my horror Cyanogen no longer has 'volume to wake' installed lmao.

there are other roms out there that do like this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1423404

Thanks, but i found out if i disable a screen lock i can wake with volume by default on ICS!
Then i covered one lockscreen with lock widgets haha, sorted. thanks guys

I'm not quite sure what your issue is here it's one of two
1) Can't get into recovery?
I'm assuming tht you're device is S-OFF, you're root and have CWM installed?
If yes then I'd suggest that you download 4EXT application from market see link in my signature next to Recovery...(there is a free version) which will install the 4EXT recovery for you.
I'd also ensure that you set Settings->Power->fastboot = OFF
As said above to get into bootloader it's normally just Volume DOwn + Power.
2) If you're device is in a boot loop....then...
what you did should have worked fine. Look in my signature for various links...
Download and Install the adb & fastboot onto your PC. Ensure that you have HTC drivers on you PC if not also download and install the link in my signature.
Then fire up a CMD on your PC, go to directory where adb is and issue the command adb reboot recovery ?
which should take you into recovery.
EDIT: I must add that you shouldn't post the same problem in multiple threads.....it's against the rules for a start!
pls whats the advantage of 4EXT over CWM for recovery?
thanks

That's just your choice.
I've got this two systeme of recovery on my DS
With 4EXTRecovery, it's much easier to convert all your partitions on 4EXT.
At the end, all your partitions are on 4EXT => much faster and sure.
4EXTRecovery has some additional tools to wipe and format more accurate.
In addition, it's customizable (themes, fonts, colors)

If you have to take battery out again, take it out when phone is finished booting up and has started to shut down again (has a black screen) before it starts re-booting up again and leave battery out for 10 seconds... DO not quickly pull out and re-insert battery that is what is most dangerous.
Do the same again, enter HBOOT, Try factory reset? see what happens?
If that doesn't help, do same again but take phone into FASTBOOT, with phone plugged in via USB (see if it changes to FASTBOOT USB) and attempt to get reponse from fastboot commands through CMD like last time fastboot reboot-bootloader
next step is to put phone into FASTBOOT through HBOOT and flash RUU which you'll find from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1002506
you'll need the one neareset what would have come on your phone originally.

It's very rare that recovery can become corrupt and yet still partially function.
There us another link in my sig to install Cwm, but I'd personally recommend 4ext, again you'll find another link in my sig for that, there is a free version you instal the
application from market and that flashes the actual recovery
Half asleep now, so will check in later, good luck

That's great news! well done for continuing to try things and not just running crying to the service centre!
The restarts on customs can often be caused by not quite finished customs or simply incompatibility issues with apps etc.. 4EXT definitively best recovery as far as I'm concerned!
This is my first Android device so I'm also learning all the time that's why I have all the useful links in my sig as I know that I'd find them useful and so I'm sure other will and do!
Two tips - always take Nandoird backups before any significant changes and if you don't quite understand what you're doing then don't do it - simply spend more time reading until you do.
You can show your Thanks with the THANKS button!
Not able to find the thanks button on XDA mobile application.. Will give you the same after logging in from my laptop

[Q] Soft brick nexus help!

i attempted to put the clockwork mod reovery and the matrix ROM on my nexus and now my phone will turn on show the google name and the root lock for 1/2 sec then go to my boot loader and at the top it says "NO BOOT OR RECOVERY IMG" PLEASE HELP!
You need to flash a rom. Once you root your phone you have to have a image to boot into.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSD92Qjt5Og&feature=youtube_gdata_player
†††
........................................
my nexus is already rooted but on startup it says NO BOOT OR RECOVERY IMG.
Try flashing the recovery image again via adb. Watch that video it will show you how to do that. If you are rooted and you are not able to boot into recovery the image didn't take, was installed incorrectly, or maybe is the wrong or a bad dl. If all else fails start from scratch., step by step.

also try flashing your custom recovery once again using the adb command "fastboot flash recovery FILE PATH" without quotes.

[Q] "No command." error while trying to access recovery?

I have unlocked the bootloader on my Moto G.
I have also flashed ClockworkMod Touch sucsessfully, but it did not boot after the first reboot, even when I said yes to "Disabling the stock recovery reflashing".
Now, whenever I enter fastboot mode (POWER + VOLDOWN) and select RECOVERY, it comes up with "No command." and a picture of an android lying down, with its front open, with warning symbol. (See attached)
I have tried reflashing the recovery using fastboot, but the same problem happens.
Any help?
Press volume up for 10 seconds and then just tap power button once and release both.

Get the same issue after flashing a recovery with fastboot...
how i fixed it :
Flashed another one (CWM swipe on the cm11 thread) through fastboot mode
once recovery flash is done, go in the recovery RIGHT NOW (volume down to scroll, volume up to select ; don't touch power button)
once in the recovery, flash supersu if it has to be done, then reboot
Worked for me
Left it overnight plugged into my laptop, now my phone isn't turning on.
So yay, I have bricked my first smartphone!

That said, it has been unbricked.
Whenever I flash a recovery, I still get "No command.", Phenom.
Thanks
That new step above is the thing to do: hold Vol Up for like 15 seconds and then just tap power. It should work, but kinda tricky to get the first times.
I got the same "No Command" screen when I flashed TWRP recovery. Then I went back to bootloader mode and flashed it again. This time I noticed a "Mismatched partition size" error (it's probably there before but I didn't pay attention). Then I flashed CWM recovery & got the same mismatched partition size error. Then I flash TWRP again & again got the mismatched partition size error. At that point I searched xda forum & found someone said it's OK. That error message just means the new recovery size is different from the old one. So I tried going to recovery (vol down then vol up) and magically it worked!
Get the normal CWM, then
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
then right away enter in it, vol down to highlight it, vol up to select/enter.It should work

If your flashing CWM, flash it then select recovery and press volume up, if it ask for something choose yes, if it still shows no command press UP + POWER button if nothing happens just keep pressing up + power until it boots into recovery.

What is this supposed to do? It gives me some commands but doesn't look like clockworkmod recovery. I think it is default android recovery but I thought cwm was supposed to replace that?
When I first flashed CWM and booted into recovery it worked fine. Then I chose 'Reboot Now' and selected 'Disable system recovery' and 'Enable root'. However now when I reboot into recovery CWM doesn't work and I can't tell if I have root.

I'm assuming you mean to do this through CMD prompt? when I try to put that in it just says < waiting for device > and it sits there. (regarding to the fastboot erase recovery part)
Edit: Okay so It was saying waiting because I wasnt in fastboot mode... If your phone is XT1032 try to install this TWRP instead of CWM using the same procedure (of course in fastboot mode)
Code:
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot flash recovery recoveryname.img
Replace your zip with this SuperSU zip and copy it in SD Card
Then
- go in recovery mode
- INSTALL
- select SuperSU zip
- swipe
I think it should work

TWRP screen unresponsive

For some reason my phone wouldn't accept the OTA update to 44S, but I was happy with 38R so stuck with that.
Now I see lollipop is coming, and (as I read it) some of the updates in 44S and the latest update contain updates which are required for lollipop, so I decided to upgrade by flashing it.
Stupid decision to do before my morning coffees, but there you go.
I downloaded the unofficial XNPH44S rom with a plan to install via TWRP.
Here is where I made rookie mistake number one; I wiped the phone before I adb pushed the rom zip across.
A little googling, and I discovered adb sideload so I think all is not lost.
Sideloading the rom seemed to work, so I rebooted back into TWRP (v2.8.1.0) to install the rom, and now my screen is unresponsive. I can't press any of the options, and pressing the volume or power buttons just brings up the swipe to unlock, which of course does nothing because the screen won't respond.
I can't go back to fastboot and install the rom that way (which, with hindsight, I realise was probably my best option in the first place) because I have no OS installed, and I can't do anything with TWRP because the buttons don't work.
Any suggestions, or am I screwed?
When it's connected via adb isn't there a command to reboot into boot loader? Adb reboot-bootloader or something? Google around.
Or turn it off and press vol up + power I think that takes you to bootloader mode. Check the noob guides for commands and steps I can't remember off hand what they are
---------- Post added at 08:04 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:01 PM ----------
It's weird that twrp is unresponsive though...

I was being a noob and thinking that because 'adb devices' was showing none that fastboot wouldn't work.
Went back to 38R, installed 44S OTA (which made my phone bootloop as it has every other time I tried to install it) then did an adb sideload of the 44s to 05Q update.
Phone fixed, and up to date - now I just have to reinstall everything and remember passwords.

Bricked my AL10, halp [Solved]

I had TWRP and and 1xx KangVip installed.
I wanted to flash an 1xx, then 321 stock rom in order to update to a newer KangVip, but neither fastboot nor adb sideload was working.
I stupidly blindly followed step by step instructions from a random internet user and the first step was to wipe everything.
When rebooting into the bootloader, it would say "connect to the computer and start HiSuite"
When running adb sideload update.zip i got "cannot read update.zip".
I checked everything but couldn't find the problem so I tried pushing the file but when trying to install it with TWRP it failed.
The next thing I did bricked my phone completely, I ran fastboot flash recovery RECOVERY.img while in the fastboot menu where it displayed "connect your phone to the computer and start HiSuite"
That removed TWRP and now when I boot into recovery I get a loading circle that goes to 5% and then stops.
In the circle is a USB logo with an arrow and under the circle are chinese characters commenting the progress.
Is there anything I can do to save my phone?
Edit: Sorry this always happens to me, I tried fixing this for 5 hours and 5 minutes after I post this the problem fixes itself...
I just tried fastboot flash again and now it works.
OK you're saying you can still flash files while it's on "Connect to the computer and start HiSuite" Yes?
If so you should be able to reflash Cust.img, boot. img, system.img and recovery.img form a
1xx Update.app file. Use Huawei Firmware Extractor to get these files.
