How to Factory Restore a rooted Samsung Infuse?

So I'm very new to the Android world. I was able to root and unlock my Samsung Infuse by following the instructions (big up lost1 !!)
Now I want to gift the phone to my sister. I want to basically do a factory reset to my phone so it is new, like the day it came. I know I can unroot it and then do a factory reset, but I have a feeling she will need tethering, so I'm keeping it rooted. How can I do a factory reset on a rooted Samsung Infuse?

if that is all you did then just do a factory reset in recovery. it clears user data and apps but won't unroot. it won't restore any stock app you may have deleted though. if you need a truely clean slate with root h8rift and gtg have odin packages for that.

No, not really a clean slate. Just factory reset. From what I"ve read in the threads, I can do a factory reset by:
rebooting the phone, and when I'm switching the phone on, I press the power buttons and both the volume buttons and release the power button ?

Under settings , choose Privacy, then, Factory Reset

Hi tekgurl, I've heard if that's done on a rooted device, it could cause issues.

If you have titanium.backup go to batch, scroll down and uninstall system data/aapplication bam

Will I need the paid version or can this also be done by the free version?
And by doing this, I'll be back to basically a stock infuse on the log-in screen but with root permission?

Yes buy it, it is very useful if you are on android, you might wanna buy file explorer and rom manager, this 3 apps is a must for android. So you can easily flash different ROM s very easy.

Gotcha. I just recently started using Android, so just rooting was a big deal. Unlocking was a nice bonus, and I was able to freeze tetheringmanager and therefore use wireless tethering.
Even when I had an iPhone, I was more into getting functionality rather than themeing it, i.e. flashing different ROM's (which is what I'm understandig is basically different themes with their own particular functionalities added into it, and maybe fine-tuned a bit).
Quick question, if I have downloaded clockworkmod recovery and opened it and everything looks good, so if I reboot my phone using the method of pressing both volume buttons and power button and then letting go of the power button, will that boot me into CMD? Do I have to enable anything in particular to go into CMD?

If you haven't booted into CWM before, you'll enter the stock recovery first. Choose Reinstall packages and on reboot you'll get into the fully-functional CWM. I had to do reinstall packages twice (boot into recovery and reinstall packages, reboot into recovery and reinstall packages, reboot into CWM).

Sweet! That bit of info will help in not panicking when I come to an unfamiliar screen when reeboting.
Gonna head home now, and give myself 2-3 hours to bring it to stock+root.
1st method) AS mentioned by rjan22, In titanium.backup go to batch, scroll down and uninstall system data/aapplication bam!
2nd method) Reboot into CWM, re-install packages, reboot into CWM. Hopefully there will be an option to wipe data and cache or something so that I'll have Superuser permissions still, and also be at the log-in screen for the Infuse as the phone is when the user first powers it on.

before you enter cwm you need to mod 3e recovery. it is an easy process.
alternatively you can flash a voodoo kernel that has cwm( red voodoo version) baked in. this can be done with sgs kernel flasher from either the cwm version or the odin version. the kernel can also be flashef in odin without touching 3e recovery.

I do need to reset with a clean slate as I'm an idiot and deleted the calendar package and cannot get it back. Where can I get the reset?

sorry if this is asked before but can i do a factory reset in the settings if i have root? or would i have to unroot before doing the factory reset. is there a easier method to wipe all data?

I want to know the answer too. If you only did a pure root, what happens when you do a security wipe? Will it retain the root, or will it resets Tf back to factory (unrooted)?

I too would like to know the answer.
My transformer is a bit cluttered and takes ages to boot, so I would like to factory reset.
I have searched for ages on the net, but I can't find a definitive answer.
My transformer did the latest OTA uk.
Any help much appreciated.

guys root is contained in the system partition which is not touched. in factory reset data is touched.
if you use the new root method nachoroot then you may need to reinstall superuser from market.

I can tell you that if you boot in to hBoot and do a factory reset you will not lose SU access. I'd done it my self. I made the mistake of trying to do the factory OTA on a device with CWRI. So i just wiped it and reboot like a "new" unit and still had SuperUser.

did you only root your device and keep it completely stock?
Or did you install Clockwork Mod Recovery as well?
My personal opinion is that if you root you should install a custom recovery especially with how easy it is on the transformer. This has many benefits, with few if any bad consequences, i suppose it will require extra steps to go back to stock, but unless you need to send it in to be repaired under warranty theres not much reason to go back to stock(This is my opinion Only)
By installing a custom recovery you gain the ability to do a full backup anexact copy of the system and everything on it if you did that originally you would be able to go back to that point eliinating all the built up garbage. but you also gain the ability to do a full wipe and restore stock or custom firmware from scratch
Again my personal preference is a custom recovery and a custom firmware mine runs at least 10 times faster and more reliable than it was when i first got it. Just in the last 3 days i did a cmplete wipe myself as i was noticing alot of built up stuff and reloaded everything esily and am very satisfied.

One drawback (on stock rom) is that automatic OTA updates from Asus will fail. But there is an alternative to apply the OTA update.

If your rooted you really should have cwm recovery installed. If you have cwm recovery why not just boot into recovery and do a factory data reset

After update to 4.2.1, my tablet runs slow as dirt...

Cold booting seems to make it worse and a regular reboot only makes it run faster for a little while. Any ideas?

The best way to deal with issue like this, is backup your stuff, do a factory reset (twice) then reflash the full Asus firmware. If issue resolved then slowly restore or reinstall your download apps.

I agree with solution. My tablet turned into complete molasis after 4.2.1 update.
I then back up my apps+data and factory reset the tablet.
It erased everything that was on the Internal storage and reset the tablet back to fresh brand-new 4.2.1 state.
Things are running much better now.
Wish I had backed up the files I had in the Pictures and Videos folders of Internal Storage that were lost in the reset, but oh well.

Yes it should. However, if you lose root on JB, not a problem anymore. This tool can root your device while on JB http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2230763 , remeber to uninstall any left over root before using the tool.

It is possible if you follow the process properly but you can root 4.2.1, so if OTA root keeper dont work you can still root.

The factory reset will help just make sure EVERYTHING is backed up. apps by titanium, and you internal storage to mSD card or to a computer.

I did the full wipe and everything is running much quicker. I tried to back everything up with the Carbon app to assist with the restore but the app couldn't see the backup after the reset. Doh.

I'm at 4.2.1 and experienced all the issues that have been document here and elsewhere. I was on the verge of trying to put in a one of the third party ROMs, but decided to give the factory reset a chance. Backed up the data using the Asus app to my microSD and removed it. Did the three time reset recommended and on the third try went through the setup. All my old apps were captured from the Play Store and then I installed the program/data backup on top of that. So far the tablet is now working without the long lags in using Chrome or just typing this reply. One of the games I backed-up was restored to the current game point. I would highly recommend doing the Factory Reset option (recommended is three times) to see if you can recover some of the speed in the tablet. Mine did and given I invested in the keyboard, I was not interested in making the move to say the Samsung Tab Pro and the expense involved.

Yes you have just cleaned you /data partition. It will eventually come back and without unlocking and installing a rom that supports trim there is not much you can do......

Thanks for the inside info. I'll keep an eye on it and if it reverts, I'll go to plan B and install a new ROM. So there are no tools like a defrag for SSD that you fix the problem in Android other than through the ROM? Seems like it would be something that would be very useful.

There are yes - lagfix on the play store will trim the file system. You need to be rooted though.

Minor Screen Defect

Hi all, I bought a new TF700 two days ago. I proceeded to successfully unlock, root, flash Cromi-x. After some teething problems got it working beautifully. Unfortunately my girlfriend noticed what looks like a big smear of some type of adhesive inside the glass. Kind of looks like something has wiped the back of glass or the panel itself, and has dried but with residue. Anyway its only visible when the screen is off or on a black background but I contacted Asus anyway and they immediately advised me to get it replaced at place of purchase.
I realise they don't normally allow this but they've given me the Return Authorisation number and the store has shipped the replacement device to my nearest store for collection. SO, do I just go ahead and swap it or do you think it will come back to bite me later on? Even if they do come back later and say they found it was unlocked, Ill have already unlocked + flashed the replacement so I figure whats the worst that can happen?
It seems the rumored 'database update' back to Asus when unlocking isnt accurate as I got through no problems and they checked serial number etc.
Any thoughts?

For me, you've already answered your own question. Once you've got your new tablet, what do you care? Even if they do notice that your original tablet was rooted, what are they going to do, force you to give the new one back....threaten to sue you if you don't? Not likely. You've got to remember that it's all about money for these guys, so once you've got your new tablet, even if they do spot your rooted original, it's going to cost them more to try to get the new one back from you than it would for them to just repair & re-sell the original.
I think that once you've got your new one, start enjoying it

For my reference can anyone explain to me how to flash this back to the stock Rom? I downloaded from Asus website, rebooted into TWRP and tried to install the stock software, which failed.
Also I'd like to know if I should be 'removing TWRP somehow? I know I cant reverse the unlock process but can I revert everything else back to factory configuration?
When one reboots via power and holding volume down, you get the menu with RCK, Android and Wipe Data - what are the definitions of RCK and Android? From what I gather one boots recovery and the other the installed ROM?
Finally - when one does a Restart from within Cromi and there are options for Bootloader and Recovery - what is the difference between these two options? Do they achieve the same things as the point above (ie reboot to recovery versus the installed rom?)

Unzip the zip from Asus first and you will see an update zip inside. Flash this from twrp and it will reset you back to stock.

If you flash the stock firmware it will replace TWRP with the stock recovery.
If you bot with Power + Volume down you boot into the bootloader menu. Your correct on RCK and Android.
It is not recommended to use Wipe Data fro the bootloader if you have a custom recovery installed, btw. If you want to wipe do it fro TWRP.
The Restart options are just a more convenient way to boot into the bootloader or recovery .

@ sbdags - Its funny I actually noticed the zip within the zip and after it failed the first time removed the zip out on its own. I astill got the same error message. To be clear, I was using the install option from within TWRP and selecting this file on my external sd card. Im re-downloading it now to test this again.

I've done it lots of times and it works fine for me.

[Q] [HELP] AT&T broke my phone (for now)

In an attempt to collect more data for this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=50666286&postcount=192, I made a new backup, and began restoring previous backups to identify when I had good WiFi speeds. I restored my stock ROM backup, and before I could even run any speed tests, AT&T jammed an update down my throat. No way to abort/postpone. Needless to say, I'm stuck in recovery. No matter which backup I restore, I can't get anywhere. My thoughts are that the update file is still somewhere on the phone, which is why nothing will get me past recovery. Does anybody know what the file is called and where it would be located? I'd like to exhaust every option before resorting to completely wiping everything.
Other thoughts: Is it possible to flash the stock recovery by itself? This would at least allow the update to happen.

Glad you got it working I don't know why carriers and lg find it okay to push updates to our device really without asking I've heard where people say no to the update and it installs it anyway I think its a bad business practice
