After update to 4.2.1, my tablet runs slow as dirt... - Asus Transformer TF700

Cold booting seems to make it worse and a regular reboot only makes it run faster for a little while. Any ideas?

The best way to deal with issue like this, is backup your stuff, do a factory reset (twice) then reflash the full Asus firmware. If issue resolved then slowly restore or reinstall your download apps.

I agree with solution. My tablet turned into complete molasis after 4.2.1 update.
I then back up my apps+data and factory reset the tablet.
It erased everything that was on the Internal storage and reset the tablet back to fresh brand-new 4.2.1 state.
Things are running much better now.
Wish I had backed up the files I had in the Pictures and Videos folders of Internal Storage that were lost in the reset, but oh well.

If you have a rooted tablet and you do the factory reset will you keep root? (not unlocked or able to get to recovery, just rooted with rootkeeper installed as well).

Yes it should. However, if you lose root on JB, not a problem anymore. This tool can root your device while on JB http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2230763 , remeber to uninstall any left over root before using the tool.

It is possible if you follow the process properly but you can root 4.2.1, so if OTA root keeper dont work you can still root.

The factory reset will help just make sure EVERYTHING is backed up. apps by titanium, and you internal storage to mSD card or to a computer.

Any word on how your Infinity came out after factory reset. Did it turn out to be faster?

I did the full wipe and everything is running much quicker. I tried to back everything up with the Carbon app to assist with the restore but the app couldn't see the backup after the reset. Doh.

TF700t running slow fix
I'm at 4.2.1 and experienced all the issues that have been document here and elsewhere. I was on the verge of trying to put in a one of the third party ROMs, but decided to give the factory reset a chance. Backed up the data using the Asus app to my microSD and removed it. Did the three time reset recommended and on the third try went through the setup. All my old apps were captured from the Play Store and then I installed the program/data backup on top of that. So far the tablet is now working without the long lags in using Chrome or just typing this reply. One of the games I backed-up was restored to the current game point. I would highly recommend doing the Factory Reset option (recommended is three times) to see if you can recover some of the speed in the tablet. Mine did and given I invested in the keyboard, I was not interested in making the move to say the Samsung Tab Pro and the expense involved.

Yes you have just cleaned you /data partition. It will eventually come back and without unlocking and installing a rom that supports trim there is not much you can do......

Bummer

Thanks for the inside info. I'll keep an eye on it and if it reverts, I'll go to plan B and install a new ROM. So there are no tools like a defrag for SSD that you fix the problem in Android other than through the ROM? Seems like it would be something that would be very useful.

There are yes - lagfix on the play store will trim the file system. You need to be rooted though.

[Q] dad's turning in tf101 for swap...

Hey. Yesterday I purchased a TF101-A1 and rooted it. After I had rooted it with nachoroot, I then tried to install CWM on the device and realiazed that the volume up button wasn't working.
I then tried to unroot it, but the unrooting process required use of that button, so I was not able to do it.
I did a system restore to find that most of my apps were backed up by titanium backup including super user, so I uninstalled all of them to make it look like stock and then did a system restore again.
There are some apps missing that I removed that were originally built onto the device such as Kindle reader and netflix which I had no use for and was not able to get them back.
As of typing this I am in school, and my dad texted me telling me he was going to return it to the store to get a new one because I told him of the problem but didn't expect him to do it today, so I thought I would have more time to attempt unrooting it.
Basically, he's taking it to CompUSA/TigerDirect, and I was wondering what are the chances they will test if it's rooted? The volume button is the only thing that's not working, I'm just worried, that's all.
Thanks in advance.
Um, what about just doing a system data reset? Just in the settings, a full reset.

A data reset only wipe data. It doesn't restore missing apps.
If you have cwm recovery you can follow this to get back to stock.
http://theunlockr.com/2011/11/28/how-to-unroot-and-remove-cwm-recovery-on-asus-transformer/
Vol down can be use in cwm recovery if up is not working.
and if you don't have cwm yet,
Use this

My tablets already going there. Im just wondering what are the chances of them actually testing to see if its rooted.
Sent from my iPod touch using Tapatalk
Can you afford to take that chance at all? Once they see it's rooted you will probably NEVER get a refund. Use NVFlash if possible. In this economy companies are being very protective of the bottom line.
Well my dad turned it in and without a problem they gave a new one. Im not going to root this one until after the ICS update.

Factory reset

Noobish Question but when factory reset is mentioned, does it mean factory reset from the settings or from the options before the cold boot occurs?
Also, is there a way I can keep my data even through the reset? e.g. my dark Meadows save file, can I copy everything onto an sd card and then copy it back into the internal storage after the reset?
Device isn't overly slow but gapps keeps crashing and the browser ain't too fast, especially in terms of javascript. Also do get some lag

Both factory resets are exactly the same. If you're rooted, you can back up your data with Titanium, move the Titanium folder to a hard drive or SD card and then back to the tablet.

You could use the Asus AppBackup app to back up the data instead of Titanium. You won't need root for that.

Wouldn't factory reset remove that data?
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T using XDA
Not if you check "copy backup to external sd"
...via Tapatalk
Would that be a bad idea though? As in,would restoring data make the factory reset less effective?
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T using XDA
It may. The point is to use the tablet a bit before restoring anything to make sure the factory reset worked. If the factory reset fixes your problem, reinstall the apps without the data. If you still don't have problems, restore the data. If you start experiencing problems again, just start over, and this time, don't restore any data. If you don't experience more problems, you're good to go.

OTA Best Practices (Jelly Bean Content)

So, since "Jelly Day" is nigh, I was wondering what everyone's update strategy is. I'm thinking my process is going to look like this:
Backup root w/ OTA Rootkeeper/SuperSU
(Root) Unfreeze all the system apps I have frozen
(Root) Do a Titanium Backup
Do an ASUS Backup
(Root) Restore build.prop (was Clean RAM, but this is overkill)
Clear Caches
Cold Boot
Hit "Update"
Wait...
After Final Boot: Factory Reset
Cold Boot
Setup System via Standard menu
Restore Root if possible
Check for Adobe Flash (post JB Factory Reset may wipe it), install if necessary
Restore apps
(Root) Freeze unwanted apps.
I'm a little tempted to factory reset before and after the update. I might copy my entire /sdcard to an external HDD prior, too. I do this occasionally as a backup method.
Do any of you guys have other approaches. I know there have been times when I have just hit update without thinking about it much and let it rip. But I want JB to be... special.

Step 5...clean RAM?
I thought about factory reset, but JB is a minor update over ICS versus ICS over Gb, so I'll probably skip the factory reset unless I experience odd issues.

Yep. Any apps or data will need to be restored.
re Clean RAM: By that I basically meant run FMR memory cleaner. Now that I think about it that IS overkill... since caches will be cleared and a reboot will follow. I mostly just use FMR to reduce crashes due to memory fragmentation.
Wait for a top Rom maker to release their own version. Install that instead.
Good things come to those who wait.

I'm new to the Infinity, so I have yet to see what this FMR is...and I'm kicking myself for taking the .30 update before I read that it breaks nvflash for the TF700....
But I understand following the accepted method since that has always worked

The ROM developers won't be able to actually update the current ICS to JB, though, right? They'll be ROMs that you need to install on systems that have already been updated to JB first, right, or am I mistaken in this?

Can't update current ICS roms to JB. I mean you can sorta, but you have to start with the JB framework first. I'm confused I guess by your question.
You don't need to be on jellybean to install a Jellybean ROM. You can be on ICS, it doesnt frankly matter, so long as you have a recovery and unlocked bootloader

There should be no prep work folks. Use titanium to backup your stuff....accept the OTA after applying rootkeeper and restore apps after reboot. Caches and Dalvik will already be cleared from the OTA drop
Thanks for the list. Reminded me of a couple of things, i had not thought of. With .30 update i forgot to use voodoo and it took me most of an afternoon to get it to install.

Yeah, I had some similar mucking about.
Anyone know if an OTA Rootkeeper su-backup survives a factory Reset? I assume it does. It could be a problem with my current with my current list otherwise.

I believe it does. We use a bunch of TF300's at work. Occasionally I factory reset them, and the steps I use to get root back is:
1) Install Superuser
2) Install Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper
3) Open Superuser once
4) Open Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper -> Restore root

FMR Memory Cleaner. I use it to free mem before playing gfx intensive games.
Hopefully the JB update will also have the nvidia drivers fixed, so that reboot+FMR is not required anymore.
Another thing to think about: Restore build.prop prior to update. Sounds like modified build.props can hose the OTA.

Anyway I can get my data after a factory reset?

Hi XDA, so I've got a problem here and I'm wondering if you guys could help.
I tried to install the JB 4.2.1. AOSP Rom on my infinity, but it went wrong, got bootloops, and decided to go back to CROMI 3.4.4., and after flashing it on TWRP 2.4.4.0. My tablet couldn't get past the boot screen, so I did a factory reset, re-flashed the rom and it worked, but I thought I had lost all my data when I actually hadn't:
A while ago I was browsing through my files and found a weird "0" folder, I opened it and all my 12GBs of data were there, games, photos, movies, but the tablet was behaving like it came from the factory, there were no games, pics, nothing at all, nothing installed. Except for some Gapps and the apps that came with CROMI.
So now I ask you guys, it there any way I could get my data back? Like, I know it's there, but it just doesn't show up on the tablet, is there any way I could get my apps reinstalled, with their respective data, like it was before the factory reset? Please guys, I'm almost finishing NFS MW, I don't want to go through all of that again lol
Thanks from the start

Did you have any backup?? like from Titanium backup or nandroid or google backup....? if you don't then you have to re install every app again, there is no other way around this. For your game it's possible that after install the game app, you could copy the data back to where it belonged...it may works. IDK, try it.
Nope, no backups... Well, since I've got all my files here I'll just take what I need (some songs, pics, data) and do a full wipe of the internal SD, thanks for the help though, I guess I should do backups from now on

i even nvflash stock firmware. So i dont think the problem is about factory reset and yes of course i did a factory reset
do you know how to reset the internal storage? cause i think is the internal storage problem i got a low speed on full wipe in cwm(takes more than a minute every time i use it, It only takes less than twenty seconds before in the same cwm)
i want to reset the whole internal storage just like the one comes when you bought the tablet(no partitions etc)

Download EasyFlasher and Stock ROM from Asus download page. Do what it says on the EasyFlasher's page and it will wipe EVERYTHING and install Stock. Make sure you remove the microSD before doing that. Else, it will get wiped too

Also, the Team EOS and very new jellybean ROMs don't quite run at the ideal 50-60 fps yet as well if you are wondering.
