I've been lurking around the forums for weeks now, and much as I hate to be the new n00b on the block, I'm seriously at my wits end with this phone.
I have root access, the stock Froyo ROM, busy box, and I went through the same hell most of us with the SGS4G seemed to go through to get it unlocked (at which point I caved and called T-Mobil) and now that it's finally unlocked, it won't recognize the SIM card (China Telecom) it says 'no service' and claims that my phone number is unknown. I have a good signal though... OTL
I've used the SIM card in the (Android) phone it came with (a Chinese model, of course; it was hell to navigate.) So I know the card is fine.
I wanted to actually be able to use this phone as a phone before messing around with it, so if anyone has some ideas for me, I'd be much obliged. And while I'm on my knees I'll ask, do any of you know of a decent (free) VPN I can use to get over the Great Firewall of China? (youtube and fb aside, it'd be nice to get some real news without having Big Brother watching (and blocking) my every move)
TL;DR:
rooted SGS4G on stock Froyo ROM.
SIM unlocked but not acknowledged; can't send messages or make calls.
Not a SIM or signal problem.

Ah, it's an APN problem.
Looks like China Telecom uses the CDMA/EvDo rev, and whereas the SGS4G is made specifically for T-Mobile, which uses GSM/WCDMA. It's not acknowledging the China Telecom network, and won't even let me save the APN settings when enter them manually.
It looks like the difference is in the MNC value. I don't know much about it, but it only accepts '99' (for CDMA it's '03')
Well then... is it possible to even get my phone to use the China Telecom network?
APN settings for China Telecom
Most APN lists don't have China Telecom included (why? because it's CDMA? or is there some other conspiracy?), so I'm posting the settings for whoever need them, though I don't think this is the right place
Note: Under "Network Settings/Mode" you want "CDMA/EvDo" or "CDMA only" selected. if you don't have this option, sucks for you... and me D: (unless you know a fix???)

any cdma rom is there which works good for unlocked phone? i use tmobile and i wanted somethign that is more for tmobile
if your phone is from tmobile you should load a rom from the gsm section, not a cdma rom.
i have a sprint tp2 but i use tmobile on it
If you put anything but a cdma rom, then you will brick your phone. You can use custom cdma roms using a t-mobile sim card, but dont use a gsm (t-mobile) rom on the sprint tp2 because you will turn it into a 700 dollar paper weight.

ok. i thought by your question that you had a gsm phone. why do you consider the roms available as unuseable for gsm.

Hey Everyone,
Just got my Locked Rogers Captivate yesterday and have been trying to figure out how to get data working with the Fido network...

Are you using a fido sim card? It's weird that it works without unlocking the phone. First thing I suggest is to download the sgs unlock app and unlock the phone. There's no reason not to really.
Dont't use the wap apn. Explains why the browser only works.
This works with mine:

I'm using internet.fido.ca and it works fine for me. I haven't tried the .apn one yet. I'll give it a try once I finish calibrating the battery.

Hi guys,
I'm also using this but I DO have to leave it on romaing for data. (Why? - Are they charging me data roaming fees even tho im a Fido sub?)
My setup:
Rogers captivate with froyo update using att release.
Fido Sim Card.

I called fido and read forums and I've been informed that you will not get extra charges. Not sure why you have to check roaming for rogers captivate though.
On a different note I'd like to share my experience with 2 different internet apns provided. "Fido 3G+ +MMS" gave me about 2k/0.3k for speed test while "fido internet" gave me 5k/2k in dl/upload speeds. I'm running axura beta 2. Can anyone confirm?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897
Awesome. Very nice to know.
Will try and post my findings on speed as soon as i get to test the different APNs.
[EDIT]
I'm also getting similar speeds from "Fido 3G+ +MMS" (2.8k/0.35k).
From fido internet : 4.5k/0.2k
Also checked with a colleague here who is on rogers on an x10: he's getting around 3.5k down and 1k up!!! crazy upload speed.
tested with speedtest.net's app
same here,
tried use both 1)mms + internet, and 2) internet only, seems internet only can get better result on both upload and download speed, using speedtest.net app
Hey im in the exact same boat, got a rogers captivate and tryin to use it on the fido network. the sgs unlock pro app (available in market for $5, but worth it imo) worked perfectly for me and is very user friendly, it requires root tho, i used the z4root.apk to root my phone. here's the thread for it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953
I was just trying to connect thru the fido auto find XD data did not work at all... txt and calling did tho, even before i unlocked it.
thanks a billion yungster89, that was exactly what i needed to get her working
i noticed when i use that APN tho, that the 3G data transfer icon will stay up, but if i try to use any data it will switch to an H logo, i assume this is for HSPA? but when i did a speedtest using the speedtest app, i only got 1.5 mbps while on my iphone 3gs (which had the exact same data plan/sim card on it) i got ~3.0 mbps down rate. any idea what would cause that? i thought HSPA was quite a bit faster than 3g?
Apn locked htc desire
Hi....
Maybe someone can help.
My apn is locked on my htc desire.
I cant edit and I can't add a apn.
It is a Vodaphone handset.
What cracks are available?
Hi all.
I'm an embedded Linux developer but am relatively new to Android.
My phone, an LG Optimus Chic is network unlocked but not rooted. Running stock Froyo 2.2.1 as received from Bell Canada last week.
I have the ADB shell available, but not as root. I'm looking for any trouble-shooting hints about what to look for.
The problem: I'm trying to get WAP proxy working because I'm using an MVNO of Bell (Presidents Choice Mobile) that offers cheap unlimited mobile browsing and I refuse to pay the going Canadian rates for data.
But I think the WAP Proxy is blocked, on the phone and/or on the Bell network. With the same APN settings it works on a Bell SIM with a data plan (but using the WAP APN), but does not work with the PresChoice SIM with a UMB plan.
I tried the IP Data APN, but when using the PresChoice SIM it depleted my $10 prepaid account down to $0.35 very rapidly, LOL. But just doesn't work using the WAP APN.
Using "adb shell ping" I can see DNS resolution is OK and the ICMP pings work fine. Is there any Linux utility like wget or even some "cat" command I can use to try and trouble shoot this ? I'm also wondering if there's a place that network operators would usually customize something like this.
Thanks much ! Config is below: (BTW, full data APN is "pda.bell.ca")

There are probably specific APN's for your carrier alone. I'm also in Canada. I'm on SpeakOut. And they offer a very similar UMB plan. I had to punch in their APN codes (Google is your friend), and use an all called Proxydroid to force the settings through. That helped me. Just Google the settings, assuming there are any.

Mods if you think this should be in a different location feel free to move it. Also I'd like to see a sticky APN thread, because apparently google is too hard to use.
I thought I'd post this because it comes up alot and there isn't a single place this information sits(as far as I could found in my searches). Also I have to find them all over again when it comes up. So here it is.

If you find yourself not able to send MMS messages it is most likely because the proxy, port, username, password fields are not <Not Set>. Just tap these values and delete any information in them. I always restart but not always necessary.
Some people enter 216.155.165.50 for the MMS Proxy and 8080 for MMS Port I have never had to and am not exactly why these values might be needed but try them if the T-Mobile settings don't work.
thx

I wonder if these settings might help S3 phones get LTE :/
I have been trying to get an ATT GS2 - I777 that is rooted and unlocked running on tmobile to accept and receive photos with texts for a week with no luck. I have used the settings provided by T-Mobile with no luck. I am running ICS though and it has a couple different settings. Any idea if that is what is causing it not to work. I can send regular text fine but it dies if you try to send or receive an image. Sending an image shows sending and it never goes. Well I would keep it ipv4. If you can leave any extra settings blank do that. Definitely use APN.
Have you tried leaving everything blank or "not set" except for the servers? The MMS issue is definitely your APN settings.

I just recently bought a version samsung galaxy s3, with a sim card slot. I now use it with t-mobile and it works fine, cant call, send texts, browse internet and e.t.c. I have one problem with the text messaging, i cant receive pic messaging and i dont know why. The message comes to me as a multimedia file, but i press download, and it just tries to download, without making any progress. Can anyone help?

I've seen this happen often with areas of poor or slow network coverage. If the coverage is full 4g try rebooting the phone that helps sometimes

i believe this may be wrong. the apn fast.tmobile.com should be fast.t-mobile.com
same with epc.tmobile.com (epc.t-mobile.com)
it would not work for me without the dash. (made an account just to post this found with google)[/QUOTE]
That was the key the Dash in T-Mobile. I added it and it now can send and received mms with photos. THANKS!

As far as I know, you have to have mobile data in order to receive MMS(picture messages) for SMS (text message) you only need network. Message can't be sent or received via Wi-Fi.

There's an article out there that follows the entire messaging cycle. To my knowledge, which may be wrong, Android routes all messages through the radio. So that if you have Wi-Fi on and your radio off, none of your messages will send until your GSM radio is on and has connected to a network.

My radio on? Can you elaborate please, i have been able to send and receive normal text messages without wifi. I do have a unlimited messaging plan with them. The problem is, the MMS messaging, or the messaging with media files such as pictures

Sure. When I say Radio I mean the GSM wireless radio, which is responsible for the wireless communication between your phone and the service provider's cell towers. And, to my knowledge, all messaging is sent and received through the cellular (GSM) radio through your cellular carrier (T-Mobile in this case.) As for MMS I was under the impression that went through the data network connection and SMS was handled just with the mobile network (Voice call etc...) Make sure your messaging plan includes SMS, if it does contact the carrier (T-Mobile) and make sure they haven't messed anything up. (maybe not phrase it quite like that) but inquire to make sure it is all good on their side.
I was running stock 4.4.2, rooted and unlocked, and my service/data were fine until today, when I just stopped being able to use data. I've tried rebooting, powering down for about half an hour, checked and double checked my APNs, and flashed Cm11. Haven't tried to flash a new radio alone since I figured cm11 would've come with a different radio from stock. A friend suggested it might be my SIM, but I would assume I would get no service at all if there was a problem there.
So where do I go from here? :V

Who is your carrier. Go to mobile networks/access point names/ and find your apn settings
Try proper radio. A sign is if your WiFi doesn't find signal usually bad mixed. I get this often. I flash lots on many devices but its simple. Anyway try your radio. And no ROMs normally have no radio unless it says otherwise or firmware. Peace.

AT&T, I've tried resetting to default APNs as well as comparing mine to those in AT&T's Help and other peoples' own settings.

See I can pick up wifi just fine, it's just my regular data that's acting up. I've tried looking into a guide for flashing radios but to be honest, I don't know much about LTE bands or anything. Is there a good guide here that I missed? It seems as simple as flashing one with CWR but I don't wanna ruin anything.
Write down your apn settings here so we can look at them

Should I delete the other ones and just have those two? Cm11 came with like a bunch of them.

You can have as many as you like but it will only use one. It looks as if you are mixing the settings of different apns together

Added both, tried selecting each one and I'm still having the same problem.
So to update, I've gone back to stock 4.4.4, straight from google, still not working, and then flashed the newest radio and that didn't do it either. Starting to thing it's a hardware problem, maybe actually is the SIM?
Ended up being the sim! Thanks for your help though, guys!
