New things and improvements in Sense 4.0:
- Landscape mode now also in home screen (with optimized buttons etc)
- No on-screen buttons (as on Nexus) but will adopt the 3 buttons (prev. 4)
- 3D Task manager
- Better lockscreen, with better integrated notifications, to-do-lists, notes, contacts etc.
- Updated Email client with threaded messages and improved layout (over all better email)
Smart Sync technology which syncs your email based on your usage habits
- Better Browser, with Read later and Watch later functions. Introducing a new Reader feature.
Reader:feature in browser strips away ads and other useless web clutter
Read/Watch Later: feature in browser saves content in a widget which can be accessed at a later time (even offline)
- Guest mode, lets your friends only test some basic stuff (no phone, data, and special apps)
- Better Camera - when it detects a face, it takes 5 pics and chooses the best one. (I guess a new version of Amaze cam?)
ImageSense: auto focus is 0.2sec, shutter time of 0.7sec
Dual Shutter Camera (video record and take photo at the same time!)
- DropBox integrated (25 GB for 2 years for free!)
- Beats Audio will be universal, meaning allowed in any 3rd part apps (Spotify, YouTube, Pandora, VPlayer, etc.)
- SoundHound seems to be integrated in the music app! (see pic attached in 1st post)
- SkyDrive integration (Microsofts cloud storage 25 GB free)
- Scrollable wallpapers are back. Changing wallpaper.
- Carousel and 3D effects are gone (to speed things up)
- HTC Speak - digital personal assistant. Similar to iPhone´s Siri (roumor)
- New sounds (notifications etc)
Overall, loosing some of the bloated feel, and now being more grown up with improved speed etc.
Looks interesting!
The DropBox feature sounds great, the additions to the Browser seem like a nice touch and improved battery consumption with the Email client is welcome.
I just wonder will the Sensation get it as an official update? I'm hoping so since the HTC Ville's specs don't sound too far off the Sensation's.
posted this in the Rom thread you linked this too...
ha so us users with devices getting ICS will get an half sense update and the new phones this yr will get the 4.0....can't wait to hear the reason why they dont update current devices to Sense 4.0...

Yeah, sound really good. but, if not any official upgrade for us Sensation users, it will most likely be ported.
but, since we will be upgraded to android 4.0.3 soon (official) it sounds logic that we will get the Sense 4.0 too... right?

if they are upgrading us to android 4.0.3 they will have to upgrade sense also!

yeah he might be right.. 3.6 might go official at start, but then upgraded to 4.0 to give us that extra WOW-feeling.
the first WOW is android 4.0.3 then after a month or so, they release the 4.0. (or at least after the release of HTC Ville...)

One would think... but logic could also dictate that they would give us a version of ICS to placate us and keep 4.0 for the newer devices to entice people to buy a new phone. LOL

THIS is what they usually do. the Evo4G didn't get an update when it could easily of gotten one long ago just as an example...
if i had my bet id say they only made this 3.6 ICS to make Sense mesh with ICS on current devices and then from there 4.0 is for new hotness

yeah, i guess. but as with the locked bootloader, they caved in.
if my HD2(love yah ) was locked, i would of threw it away quite soon, but custom roms gave it an extra year. (locked loader was a way for them to not keep your phone up to date, and therefore buy a new one sooner)
hope we get the same result here (as transformer prime)

If this be the case, I'm sure the XDA community will find a way to rip it out. They will port it just like all the other releases.

Blue tint on acer screens persists though; highly doubt its final.
Im most excited about universal Beats support, guest mode (which I hope is customizable), and landscape view (which would have been even more useful when I had a G2).
For all the people worrying about an official 4.0 update, I wonder where you could go to find some sort of online community who likes modifying phones and such?

I couldn't find a topic on this, searching HTC Bravo, "HTC Bravo" and just Bravo came with nothing.
Is anyone else looking forward to the bravo? It's basically a Nexus one with hard keys, 720p recording and Sense UI.
Personally, I prefer Sense UI to stock android, even though the hero is still on 1.5 I don't see how in any way Stock Android 2.0/1 offers any better or nicer features than Sense UI.
The Bravo should be announced next week and come out in March. I can't wait for it to be honest and will be upgrading from my G1 ASAP.
The Bravo will be released in Barcelona Monday or Tuesday.
It will get a new name, can't tell what tho.

100%, Just keep following my Twitter
I heard it was going to T-Mobile UK but what about T-Mobile USA.
I like the Nexus One but that stupid plan you need with it to get it at $180 on T-Mobile is what I hate.
Hopefully the Bravo will be around the same price and maybe even cheaper
I also take the Sense UI over stock android. I mean look at the Hero's ancient Android 1.5 Sense UI.
*7 screens
*Very pretty and helpful widgets with cool animations
*Multi touch in browser, gallery, and mail before Google pushed it to the Nexus One (excluding the mail)
*FLASH in browser.
*LOADS of eye candy. I mean everything I go into has eye candy. Even the darn menus.
If HTC SENSE can run smooth on my old MT3G with only 192 mb of RAM and a 528 mhz processor just think how an Android 2.2 HTC SENSE will run on a 512 mb RAM and a 1 ghz processor.
Plus the Bravo will come with all the goodies of Android 2.1
*Newer Market
*Google Maps with Multi touch and navigation
* The other goodies that I can't remember.
HTC will probably make their own version of the 3D gallery and maybe even make their own version of live wallpapers.
Plus all those Nexus One users will want a port of Bravo.
Which is harder to port: Stock Android or a Custom UI Android?
Custom UI is harder to port than Stock Android.
Am hoping this will come out on o2-uk ASAP. As for the leaked brochure saying "april" things can change since then and all sources seem to point at March.
It sure does look like the Nexus, but with a few other features.

Am I looking forward to it, you bet I am. When I saw the specs for the HTC HD2 last year, I was salvating for the whole of the UK. But then you had the well documented camera glitch et al, and the shear size of the handset in my hands just put me off. Alas, then came news of the "Bravo", and it looks like the 3 year wait for well specked smartphone is almost at an end - I can't believe I've turned my nose up at the many offerings that have been cast my way - diamond 1&2, Samsung Omnia 1 & 2...the list goes on.

THIS IS THE LEGEND.
All I got to say....F**k the Nexus One. With the Bravo (same specs but looks SOOOOO much sexier and has HTC sense) It will officially go to a carrier without getting a lame ass plan or you can buy it unlocked. Same with the Legend (A powerful phone but it is a budget phone. Great for it's price but It is not going to be weak like the hero or the g1/mt3g. More RAM and a better processor.) It will officially go to a carrier without getting a lame ass plan or you can buy it unlocked.
I heard it was going to T-Mobile UK and at least one (if not both) of the phones is going to T-Mobile USA.

How can we have a AOSP when Google has not even announced if the are going to release the Source code for ICS yet. I mean AOSP stands for Android Open Source Project.
I for one really hope that Google does release the Source and does not treat ICS in the same manner they did Honeycomb. But I think they just did not want Honeycomb ported to phones is why they did not make it open Source. Maybe now that ICS has the features of Honeycomb in it Google will not hold back and not release the Source.
ALL Android OS are open source, they are ''obliged'' to release the sources in the 3 months after releasing it on any device.
HTC took the freedom to release their Desire source to the last week so N1 devs couldnt adapt it too soon, but in general as we saw with GB AOSP Google release the sources pretty quickly...specially when a new iphone is endangering sales

Yeah that is the exact the point I was trying to make. I am also fairly sure that Google will release the source code for ICS as it is meant for phones and tablets where as Honeycomb was just meant for tablets. But to further my point from my earlier post. Honeycomb source was never released and even the great king the HTC HD2 Leo only got on Honeycomb ROM and it still has a ton of bugs and is not a daily driver ROM. In fact I am not sure if the developer is even still working on the ROm as I have not went to the thread in a good while now. So you see a ROM dump from another device that is running the OS version you want from another device will work to make a port. But ports are mostly buggy at best when first released and also require loads of work by devs. But a AOSP ROM usually works way better and from what I know takes less work from devs to bring to a device.
Can't wait to see what the devs is gonna cook up with ics =)

Unfoturnately, we won't see a official release of this on our desires... HTC will be selfish bastards and just release us ICS + Sense 3.6. It's their way to still persuade us to upgrade our phones.
This is like what they did for original Desire owners... they gave them Gingerbread, but still dumped them with the old HTC sense UI
they will save this new Sense for their new 2012 lineup.

No need to get so angry oly You never know, we might get Sense 4. If not, i'm satisfied with Sense 3.6, it's not like either one of us will use the stock upgrade A kernel 3.0, and we're on to the first custom ROM with a Sense 4 port.
As far as the Desire is concerned, that device had very low memory. It could hardly take gingerbread with 2.1. After the update, you could install 10 apps, max. Sense 3 would have maxed it out entirely

I agree with you. The main gain we get from the update is the kernel source, and drivers.
Google has done a good job the UI looks pretty for once!
However, I haven't used ICS as my daily driver yet, so I can't tell from its functionality from Sense.
Personally, I think Sense 2.1 and 3.5 are the best upgrades. They added great functionality to their older parts.

Completely off topic and totally unrelated, but i thought you guys might wanna watch this!
It made me laugh real hard!
nice one man... poor iphone user.
I love Android Ice Cream Sandwich. I love the fluid user interface, the futuristic Holo theme, the aptly named Roboto font and its swipe-able UI elements among many other qualities. Hell, I love it so much that I’ve even started eating more Ice Cream Sandwiches ever since it was announced. ( just joking )
ICS is a completely new direction for Android, it is its first version that has a coherent design vision behind it, and its Director of User Experience, Matias Duarte has outdone himself. The care and love he has put in while designing it was pretty self-evident, that is, until OEM’s got their slimy hands upon its shiny, beautiful interface. ( yeah, Samsung, i am talking to you )
The crux of the matter is that Samsung just started rolling out its ICS update for its most popular smartphone to date, the Galaxy SII. And it is horrendous. Absolutely horrendous. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with it, except the fact that it looks EXACTLY the same as Gingerbread. Samsung have taken a revolutionary update to the Android operating system and turned it into an iterative one, which is behaviour that I cannot, in good conscience, condone. I am surprised that Google is not yet up in arms against such a base defilement of its beautiful child.

Home Screen of SII on ICS - (Courtesy-GSMArena.com)
Samsung’s logic states that it does not want to change an interface that millions of its users have now gotten used to, which, superficially, seems pretty sound. But, the problem is that people were expecting ICS to be an absolutely revolutionary change and as Nokia and Symbian have already shown us, companies should not keep sticking to a familiar UI and ebb the tide of progress while the world around them keeps evolving. It is a cut-throat world right now, you either innovate and move forward or stagnate and die.
Which brings us to future innovation from Samsung. The company is about to introduce its latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy SIII. The question then arises as to what Samsung shall make of the software atop such a seminal device; will they again cater to legacy users and use the same version of TouchWiz as on the SGS2, or will they completely re-vamp the UI to accompany the new device? As the situation stands, both of the options present potential pitfalls. If they stick to SGS2’s UI, the tech industry at large would be completely disappointed, as Samsung would be the only company to blatantly ignore ICS to such an extent. On the other hand, if they do introduce a new UI, they would be fragmenting their own Android smartphone portfolio.
Samsung has already garnered a reputation for being very flaky with regard to their updates. They decided not to update the Galaxy S to ICS at all and all this further confusion might be a potential nail in Samsung’s coffin for the year 2012. That is just how fast a single bad decision travels among the tech fraternity in these times.
I don’t want to sound like an Apple fanboy, but this is one place where Samsung and the whole Android OEM conglomerate sorely need to learn the ropes from Apple. They update their phones regularly and consistently. You can still pick up the iPhone 3GS, launched 3 years ago and it would still have more or less the same experience as a newly minted iPhone 4S, while in Samsung’s case, every subsequent generation of their flagship ‘S’ line has a monumentally different experience. Come on Sammy, wise up!
The good ole' Galaxy S, is not getting an 'OFFICIAL' ICS upgrade, why? Because according to them, the RAM in phone is not enough to run the touchwiz and the other carrier added crapware, even when the Google Nexus S ca be updated to the latest ICS offering, which essentially have the same hardware.
If you take a look at the homescreen of the S II, one which is still on Gingerbread and the other one which is updated to ICS, you can barely notice any difference between them.
So, in the end, i just want to state that if samsung's gonna include touchwiz n it's next flagship, at least please update the touchwiz so that we can tell any difference between Gingerbread & ICS.
P.S. I want to add a link for a youtube video which shows two S II, kept side-by side, one Gingerbread & one ICS, but the forum rules doesn't allow me to post the link.
I agree, but the reason I don't like TW is not because of fragmentation, but because It's just so extremely ugly. I know this is a personal opinion, but I know many people agree with me and I can't see how Samsung can possibly have missed this and continues to use it.
Also the fact that it is so similar to gb TW is stupid. HTC understood that they had to renew themselves and created a, in my opinion, amazing skin

yeah, they've completely bungled up the ICS update for S II, only because of the ugly touchwiz. i mean just watch the video once, one can hardly tell the difference between gingerbread & ice cream sandwich, if they want to upgrade the software just to make them look-alike then i guess that their next flagship will be just like their previous, at least when it comes to os
The two biggest cons for me are that Samsung updates horribly slow because of it and that it's plain ugly.
Gingerbread, TouchWiz and Sense are closer to the style of iOS, while Ice Cream Sandwich is closer to the modern Windows Phone 7 style.
I like that much more. The only thing that I find better in WP7 than in iOS and Android is the design of the User Interface.
to be honest I am using a port of the HTC One with Sense 4.0 and Htc did nearly the same thing. If you didnt tell me it was ICS I would think it was gingerbread with a new sense clock widget. I am not sure why the OEMs continue to do this. Maybe samsungs or htcs decisions suite some, but when the first thing I need to do with the HTC port is start yanking apks and adding different launchers to convince myself I am running ICS there is an issue
incredible step backwards. total gingerbread sh!t.
ruins the whole essence of ICS if you ask me.
damn you and your Galaxy Value Pack upgrades too!
I dont want to unlock my phone with my face OK?
Guys you have to understand. We are the 1% of their users. And even some of us prefer ugly UI (MIUI). The OEM will always do this. The UI is their branding on a phone. Most normal users like the way it looks. Personally I have not seem a good looking UI from anyone. All 2 tone colors and flat images. Thank god for custom themes. Lol
If you want regular updates then get a Nexus. When it comes to anything other then the nexus, the carriers have all the control over the updates. (At least in the states)
Some people don't know that you can disable defaults on twlauncher and go to stock launcher instead.
I've made simular comments in the past few months after the first leaked images of the Samsung ICS update.
I argued that what we are seeing is a midcycle update and not the rule of thumb for future devices.
Don't get me wrong, this by no means advocates samsungs decision to strip ICS of its looks and feature set. I'm merely able to understand that many millions of people have bought this phone (millions of very ordinary people) and this isn't like an upgrade from froyo to gingerbread where the notification bar gets changed to black. ICS is a different animal all together.
My mother chose her green screen nokia 3210 over a cybershot Sony Ericsson simply because she wasn't keen on the icon style UI. She has never strayed from nokia since even though they now have icons.
Its a fear of losing customers which has lead to such a timid update and samsung as a brand doesn't have the same innovative swagger as HTC let's say. Where as HTC customers are almost expecting HTC to make everything more glossy and spin around like a disco dancer every two weeks in an update.
My GSII is still amazing with gingerbread. I've changed the launcher which I would have done and will do no matter what they did with ICS. Orange UK will release the ICS update in the coming weeks and my expectations are safely low.
I don't believe this will be the case for the GSIII by the way. Plus I also here that samsung may be the first to offer a choice of the new TW ICS (that's not so locked to the gingerbread experience) and Vanilla ICS.
My fingers are crossed and anyway my next upgrade cycle isn't until next year when jellybean will be out and the GSIV or "the New GS" will be in full swing.
Booooom!

ICS status bar battery is green! need I say more?
maybe they honestly tried, but with that touchwiz camoflauge, I have to do a double/triple take to see ICS.
SGS2:
Lol see the problem is, samsung believes in only changing the interface and adding true new features in their next flagship phone, unlike iOS where the new interface changes show up on older models. Samsung i hate you, and not by opinion but because i have the tab 8.9 and captivate and you havent done anything to fix their various bugs etc, so i have to rely on custom romsol
It's embarrassingly bad.

ICS not support ad-hoc!!!
using ICS only 1 hour and i flash it back to gingerbread 2.3.6, at least my gb 2.3.6 can connect to ad-hoc network and ics CAN NOT!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24766415
yeah, samsung are just careless when coming to device maintaining, but i don't care as long as there are devs that make ports and roms that i love, and samsung releases sources !!!
I agree, I have not had a stock firmware on any of my android devices for longer than a day or so in years. I guess that is actually a pretty hurtful statement to the OEMs software though

It was never coming for the inspire anyway

I meant mostly because most ICS roms for Inspire were waiting for ics kernel of desire hd...
It doesn't matter that it was never coming for the Inspire specifically. Any ICS update for the Desire HD can be easily ported and help all Inspire owners. We should be angry about this, not only Desire HD owners.
It means no official ICS. There are already several unofficial AOSP ICS ROMs and a few Desire V ICS ports.
I wont ever own another HTC product. Promise ics to DHD and then say the customer quality is what they are concerned about. Yet the desire c is half our phone and is getting it >.<

Guys let me let you in on a little secret. All OEM are the same when it comes to this. Mainly here in the states where the carriers control the updates. With the way hardware and Android are updating the best you can hope for is a 6 month period where the device may get an update. After that all bets are off. If updates are important to you then get a Nexus and be done with it. Its not like most dont run a AOSP based rom anyway so why pay all the extra for the OEM stuff. No need to be all upset about it.

There is nothing we can do about HTC cancelling the update to DHD except complain to HTC. If you want the best possibility of updates then a Google Nexus phone is the way to go (as already mentioned). Remember that it is probably not ICS specifically that created performance issues, but rather the combination of ICS and whatever version of a newer Sense (Rosie) HTC was planning. I have experienced that the phone handles AOSP ICS versions just fine, but Sense 3.0 and later versions paired with ICS would probably be a drag on this phone. Remember that when the Inspire came out, other manufacturers were already utilizing dual core technology so the phone was already behind the times upon release.
Right. Some of the custom ICS ROMs run very smoothly. It must be Sense that is the problem. Too bad, really. I intend to keep running with the Redemption ICS ROM on the Inspire until Google announces the next Nexus later this year and then I will jump ship. I was tempted, especially with JB, to buy a GSM GN but given that by October or November we might have some new Nexus hardware announced, I just need to be patient.

I have noticed that GB and Sense 3.0 and 3.5 custom ROMs have the occasional lag. I can only imagine what ICS combined with 3.5 (or even 4.0) would do to the usability. I have tried a couple of AOSP based ICS roms and they work well (except for the bugs such as camera issues). I have had better experiences in regards to performance with CM 7 ROMs than I ever did with the rooted stock rom (with bloatware removed of course). I will be buying a new Nexus myself once a newer version is released. I will use my contract renewal to get my wife a new phone every year (keeps her quiet about cheap gifts at Christmas and birthdays which are less than a month apart) and I get a phone which I know will receive support for a long time.

Relax guys. I've realized that even if they don't want us to have it, we will get it as soon as the Desire S or Incredible S gets kernel source for ICS. After that, porting a full Sense 4 or 3.6 ROM is a walk in the park.

Even then, team virtuous has nearly finished porting a completely working HTC 3.0 kernel. Sense doesn't work on our phones because we don't have the right kernel running under it. Virtuous and Pacha have 2 ROMs that are almost completely working. Camera doesn't work on some phones that have hardware from omnivision (me unfortunately :crying, but if you have Samsung hardware then you're in luck. Some of the other sense 4/2.6 ROMS also work without a hitch if you flash the 3.0 kernel, and a few patches.
