unlocking the Bootloader
Warning: Unlocking the Nexus S's bootloader will void the warranty.
If the Bootloader on the Nexus S has already been unlocked, you may skip this section.
You will need fastboot on the computer to unlock the bootloader on the Nexus S. Follow the Android SDK guide, to get the fastboot on the computer.
Power the Nexus S down, and hold Volume Up & the Power button until booted into the bootloader. You should see a white screen with three skating androids.
Connect the Nexus S to the computer via USB.
On the computer, open terminal and run:
fastboot oem unlock
On the Nexus S, a prompt will open up asking you if you are sure you want to unlock the bootloader and again warning you that doing so will void your warranty. If you agree to these terms, press Volume Up to select Yes, and then press the Power button to confirm.
NOTE: Unlocking the bootloader wipes the device.
The Nexus S will reboot.
Installing the ClockworkMod Recovery Image
If you have already flashed a custom recovery image, skip this section.
Download the latest version of the ClockworkMod Recovery:
ClockworkMod Recovery 5.0.2.0: Download
Place the ClockworkMod Recovery Image in the same folder as fastboot (the /tools folder with the Android SDK folder).
Power the Nexus S down, and hold Volume Up & the Power button until booted into the bootloader. You should see a white screen with three skating androids.
Connect the Nexus S to the computer via USB.
On the computer, open terminal and run:
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-crespo.img
The ClockworkMod Recovery should now be installed on the Nexus S.

The Nexus S should not be network locked. It may not run on all frequencies (from Voda AU, most likely 850mhz), because it was not made to.
What makes you think it is network locked?
I did try to other sim and not working. And I call customer care they told me its locked to vodaphone n only work on vodaphone network.if u want to unlock then you have to pay money......any help???????plz new to nexus forum

I too have a aus vodafone nexus s. When i unlocked bootloader and rooted it, it was sim unlocked.
I've not heard of a single case where the sim was locked on a Vodafone AU Nexus S. A locked phone would tell you the sim card is not compatible, did any error message come up?
Also, try a different sim card from another company.

I've got a Nexus S that got screwed up from the 2.3.6 OTA. It can go into fastboot mode and recovery mode but it will not boot into Android. When you try to unlock the bootloader you get the unlock screen, can select yes but when you press power the device just hangs. If you go into download mode you get a screen about unlocking the bootloader. Odin detects the device, retrieves the pit, sends the image you want to flash to the phone and the phone says image verified. Then it just does nothing. Odin just sits there and there is no other feedback on the device. It looks like if the bootloader is locked you cannot flash with Odin either. Or at least if the device goes into the strange unlock bootloader screen instead of the true download mode screen Odin flashes fail. I have searched and searched and cannot find a resolution to this problem. Has anyone figured out why some devices hang when you try to unlock the bootloader and has anyone found a way to work around this problem. I am trying to help a guy out and don't want to give him back his phone telling him there is simply nothing I can do for him. He has a TMO device in Thailand. Samsung service here will only service phones sold in Thailand through authorized channels. Since it has a TMO model number they won't touch it.

Can't. Clockwork recovery image is sent to the phone. Then it says failed because bootloader lockaed, use "fastboot oem unlock" to unlock the bootloader. And on the phone it says something like Flash FailedState LOCKEDbootloader.
Without being to unlock the bootloader no image can be flashed. I even tried a stock boot image just for a test and it was rejected in the same manner. With the bootloader being locked down it won't let me flash anything. I would need a stock signed rom with android-info.txt and android-product.txt files. I have yet to find one. I think that would flash the phone.
Odin is a no go also. The images are pushed to the phone, the phone verifies the images and then doesn't flash them due to the bootloader being locked. And in download mode I don't get the shovel guy I get a screen telling me to unlock the bootloader but I am connecting in the manner that Odin can see and talk to the phone. The phone just refuses to flash the images once they are downloaded to it.
same for my nexus s,how to solve it?thx
I'm also having the problems here.
However, I simply cant get fastboot to work. It is continually stuck on 'waiting for device' (since the 2.3.6 OTA update).
I tried to flash an old 2.3.4 stock ROM I had on my SDcard, but recovery wont let me. ClockworkMod also cant be flashed because of the fastboot problem.
Yes, I checked that my drivers are up to date, I've tried using fastboot from both windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04.

Do you mean getting stuck when you try to unlock the bootloader (fastboot oem unlock) or can you not even get into the bootloader at all.
I can get into the bootloader with "adb reboot-bootloader" or just holding the power and volumeup keys on. However, no fastboot commands work at all. My lock state = unlocked, but even though I have the superuser app installed, I dont have root access.
All the problems started when I foolishly applied the OTA update from 2.3.4 to 2.3.6.
maybe try on another pc?

Had the same problem ... but there's a YouTube video where the guy shows how to root any nexus device... here's the link but view from the PC because within the video there's a link saying that this video is old and to click the box within the video screen
Also there should be a link that says Nexussrootnew ... click on it to download and extract it and move it to C drive... within the file Ull have the USB drivers superuser ... recovery. Once moved into C drive open Command Prompt and type:
>cd c:\Nexussrootnew "enter"
>Fastboot Device"s" < Forgot lol
>FastBoot OEM Unlock
Just Follow the step in the video and Ull be fine

Thanks so much YourMainDude! I usually avoid videos for instructions on this kind of thing, but this one was actually good.
For anyone who comes across this thread again, the tools you need seem to be in the SDK but do not work. The tools that work are at the website of the above video-maker (I cant post links yet, but if you search google for 'nexussrootnew.zip' the first hit should be the website nexusshacks.com)
I'll be installing cyanogenmod I think, since I'd rather that I never again have an OTA update from google.

I tried this but it still requires bootloader to be unlocked so it didn't work. My problem is similar to OP's. My phone appears to offer the bootloader unlock option, but selecting 'yes' to unlock fails to actually unlock. So nothing else works to restore the ROM. Though the phone does accept commands from adb just fine.
Anyway, I'm just posting this in case anyone else has the the same issue w/ bootloader not unlocking.
Ok guys, so here's the problem. my HOX (rogers) is bricked because of what i assume is a bad rom install. I am a noob, I just wanted jellybean and did some things, bricked my phone and here i am. anyone (first person) who is able to un-brick this thing will get $50 in their paypal account WITHIN THE SAME MINUTE - i swear by it. please, i just want my phone back.
So, the steps I took were:
1. downloaded a rom and jb package from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1790032
2. transferred the roms onto my computer (am overseas atm, at a coffee shop writing this)
3. did a twrp recovery, transferred the recovery files onto my comp
4. did the factory reset option (wiped data, SD and cache via twrp)
5. rebooted, did transfer of above mentioned files (the rom, jb apps package and recovery of data and system)
6. booted into twrp, flashed the rom and jb apps package (should have rebooted first and then twrp-ed i know)
7. booted; IT WASNT WORKING (i know it was alpha, but i mean constant "phone stopped working" and "messages stopped working?" no one else had that problem...)
8. SO... i said to hell with jellybean and rebooted into twrp, installed the system recovery package i had on twrp (probably where i went wrong...)
9. BIG PROBLEM. the phone won't boot. It's stuck on the HTC logo with just the message "this build is for developer purposes" &c.
10. I go into TWRP and the SD card won't even mount.
I'm on TWRP v2.1.7 atm... and i mean, it really is bricked. I can load into bootloader, and when I plug it into the comp it says fastboot usb instead of fastboot so i know it recognizes being plugged in (maybe it's just recognizing the charge influx?) but when i DO plug it in, it wont show up on my computer as anything. before on jellybean i would try to mount to disk drive and the computer would say something along the lines of driver installation failed or something...
and last resort - would... rogers honor the one-year warranty i have on this? I lost the receipt (stupid i know) but i have the warranty information provided in the box back at home. Rogers still has my customer information and I have many forms of ID to verify that it IS me... and it would be financially beneficial to them to honor the warranty, as if they don't, I'll just cancel my contract and move to another carrier out of spite. The guy that works there probably still does, and should remember me (we had an extended conversation about something i don't quite remember)... what's your two cents on that? Rogers is notorious for being crappy with customer service but eh... worth a shot right?
Anyways... I'd really appreciate it if anyone can give me any information on salvaging this bricked phone. i mean, I said 50 bucks but im willing to negotiate.
Thanks, and I'll be waiting for a speedy reply
The easiest solution would be to download a Rogers RUU from the Evita Shipped Rom thread boot into bootloader then fastboot connect phone then type fastboot devices to make sure it comes up then fastboot oem lock then run the RUU.
Sure you'll have to root and unlock again but you'll get your phone back.

I once saw sd not mounting. Only fix was to force a shutdown. Hold the power button for 5-10 seconds, you should see the bottom touch buttons flash just prior to it fully turning off.
Push and hold down vol prior to releasing power button and hold while the phone boots.
Hope it boots to recovery again but with sd card access. If not rinse and repeat a few times until it does work.
Personally from fastboot I wouldnt switch to recovery, but instead I would install a ruu.
Sent from my HTC One XL using xda app-developers app
I would try reflashing recovery from fast boot first...and see if you can get back in.
If not fast boot OEM lock and ruu as stated. Certainly not bricked if u have fast boot.
Also if Canadian you can add me on gtalk as well. [email protected] , niceppl you can add me too u lucky soff canuck.

Fix
First to Relock your device, you will want to boot into your bootloader and select fastboot. After you've selected fastboot plug your device into your pc and open a command prompt. You'll want to type 'cd C:\Android' and then 'fastboot oem lock' and your phone will restart with a locked bootloader. Now you can upgrade to the RUU without any issues.
Now find your ruu here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237
Once you've finished upgrading your ruu you will want to boot into your bootloader again, with your device unplugged, and select fastboot. THEN plug your device in and run your command prompt again on your PC. Again, cd to C:\Android and type in the following command to unlock your bootloader again: 'fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin' (I've heard reports of some people having to type this command two or three times for it to work but it went the first time for me)
Hope this helps ^____^
Please help, my bootloader is persistently locked! I have S4 and have unlocked it several times between ROM upgrades, i.e 1.78 to 2.21. but now that I have updated to 2.31 it wont unlock. I have followed the steps manually and using the One S unlock Kit but it simply wont work. It gets to the "Unlock Screen" where you select YES or NO with the volume keys and power button, and then it reboots and appears to have done a factory reset. I know this is normal and yet when I boot back into the bootloader to flash recovery it says "RELOCKED" and i cant flash recovery! Please HELP, does this happen to all 2.31 users?
FYI I used the RUU to go from 2.21 to 2.31
For me works update android sdk drivers , i was have the same problem

This has been replied multiple times. reboot to the firmware, after initial settings go to settings>power>fastboot disable it
Turn off the phone > reboot to bootloader (vol down and power key together) > if still relocked than reapply the HTC emailed patch
(it is understood that you had reapplied for the htc unlock patch when flashing new firmware, and they emailed the new patch to your adddress, this patch in fastboot folder is to be applied)

I didnt totally understand what you said there, but I went through the steps of unlocking the bootloader as if I had just got a phone brand new - which failed. But anyway I manage to somehow unlock it in the end, not sure how, but I think what happened was after I had selected YES to unlocking the bootloader i disconnected the usb cable before the phone rebooted.

I ran into the exact same problem and your method of disconnecting the USB cable actually worked! Thank you!
Yes, a lot of us had this problem. Me too for even a few times. Its something with the usb cable or reset after reset. Sometimes ive to try 10 times and then it is working.
Just keep trying on different ways.

I have a nexus 5 16gb model with an unlocked boot loader but I am NOT rooted. I was happily using it when I put it to sleep and the next time I went to use it it would not turn on. I plugged it in and put it on charge where all it does is boot loops. When it isn't plugged in it is useless. I can't access recovery because when I do it turns off again and starts to reboot. It is in a 3 second or so boot loop no matter what I do. I have a lot of files on there I need and I don't know what to do. The only thing I could think of doing was use the WugFresh nexus root toolkit and the flash stock when boot looping option but it wouldn't work because it couldn't find my devices fast boot ADB thing :/ My friend unlocked my bootlader and rooted for me but I unrooted because I didn't like it. I really need help even If i can just somehow lock the bootlader so my warranty isn't voided . Please anyone that knows anything about this give me any advice!
You should be able to get into fastboot, flash a custom recovery, and then go into that custom recovery and use adb to pull the SD card files.
Ask this question also in the nexus 5 q and a section for more help.

Dear friends,
I have LG Google Nexus 5 (Hammerhead D821(H) 32GB) model. Some days ago I tried to install Ubuntu Touch OS through UBports Software in my nexus 5 phone. But I forgot to enable USB Debugging first. So when I started the flash process and try to unlock bootloader, one time it show lock state unlocked. But In reality it was not unlocked. Because of this reason Ubuntu Touch OS installation is not completed and it corrupted my phone. Now I am unable to boot in android also. I also tried to re-flash my phone with Google Factory image but it was not completed because of my bootloader is locked. I don't know how i can unlock bootloader now. I used Wipe Data & Factory Reset option in Recovery Mode but it is also vain. Please help me how can I correct my phone.
Assuming you have adb/fastboot drivers correctly installed, you have to reboot to bootloader by pressing volume down + power and keeping them pressed until you see the bootloader screen. Then connect your phone to the PC and issue the following command from a command prompt:
fastboot oem unlock
Keep in mind that unlocking the bootloader will erase all your data, just like a factory reset, so backup everything first!

Dear Sir,
I tried to unlock bootloader with fastboot oem unlock command many times. When I used this command one time it shows unlocked but when I restarted bootloader it again shows locked.
Eh, this is not good. In my experience, this happens when the eMMC has gone bad, either faulty or write protected for some reason. I have investigated the issue and I have not found a solution yet... Even desoldering it and soldering it to a uSD custom PCB does not allow me to write to it... I am afraid you are stuck with a secretly bricked phone...
I don't know if you already tried all possible, just take a look at this thread.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/go...nexus-5-doesnt-boot-access-adb-t2521691/page3
Or even look at this,LG Flashtool. You don't need unlocked bootloader to flash.
