How to flash a corrupted Google Nexus? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear friends,
I have LG Google Nexus 5 (Hammerhead D821(H) 32GB) model. Some days ago I tried to install Ubuntu Touch OS through UBports Software in my nexus 5 phone. But I forgot to enable USB Debugging first. So when I started the flash process and try to unlock bootloader, one time it show lock state unlocked. But In reality it was not unlocked. Because of this reason Ubuntu Touch OS installation is not completed and it corrupted my phone. Now I am unable to boot in android also. I also tried to re-flash my phone with Google Factory image but it was not completed because of my bootloader is locked. I don't know how i can unlock bootloader now. I used Wipe Data & Factory Reset option in Recovery Mode but it is also vain. Please help me how can I correct my phone.

Assuming you have adb/fastboot drivers correctly installed, you have to reboot to bootloader by pressing volume down + power and keeping them pressed until you see the bootloader screen. Then connect your phone to the PC and issue the following command from a command prompt:
fastboot oem unlock
Keep in mind that unlocking the bootloader will erase all your data, just like a factory reset, so backup everything first!

Dear Sir,
I tried to unlock bootloader with fastboot oem unlock command many times. When I used this command one time it shows unlocked but when I restarted bootloader it again shows locked.

Eh, this is not good. In my experience, this happens when the eMMC has gone bad, either faulty or write protected for some reason. I have investigated the issue and I have not found a solution yet... Even desoldering it and soldering it to a uSD custom PCB does not allow me to write to it... I am afraid you are stuck with a secretly bricked phone...

I don't know if you already tried all possible, just take a look at this thread.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/go...nexus-5-doesnt-boot-access-adb-t2521691/page3
Or even look at this,LG Flashtool. You don't need unlocked bootloader to flash.

The thread is quite old,but needed links are working correctly,i've just checked.

[Q] Nexus i9020T stuck on unlock bootloader

I have an i9020T that is stuck in the Google boot loop. I was given this phone in this state so I am not sure how it happened. I can volume+ and power and get to fastboot. When I do a fastboot oem unlock, the screen changes on the phone to confirm I want to unlock the bootloader. I use volume+ to move to Yes then press the power button to select.
The PC terminal shows the little dots as if it is working on it. After 9 hours, the phone's screen remains on the Unlock Bootloader? screen and the PC terminal has Failed with too many links.
I have tried with the Android ADB Interface driver, the Android Bootloader Interface driver, and the Samsung drivers. I have removed the drivers and downloaded PDAnet, put the phone in fastboot mode, connected to the pc and let PDAnet install the driver (although it cannot install PDAnet on the phone). All resulting in the same outcome.
If I type fastboot devices, it returns the serial number that is displayed on the phones fastboot screen. It will not fastboot oem unlock.
I have searched and read as much as I can find on this and other forums. It appears this has happened before but the threads I have found seem to stop without concluding if there is a solution or it's a lost cause.
Anyone have a solution to this? Or, is this phone just a brick?
same problem here, can anyone know how to unlock the bootloader or even revert to stock ROM with locked bootloader?
Also, is it possible to flash official ROMs, any of those with locked bootloader?
I never flashed any custom or other ROMs with my phone, and it just turned out like this

NEXUS S EUR Bricked OEM UNLOCK ERASE FAIL

Hey guys, i've a big problem.
Yesterday, suddently my nexus s didn't boot. It was stucked on Google logo.
It's rooted and it has the cm7 rom.
I tryed to reflash with cw recovery but i have an issue.
I cannot copy nothing on the sdcard partition.
I mount it with recovery and correctly copy the img from my pc. After i sync and dismount but if i remount the sdcard i cannot see the file that i've copied before.
It seems strange because if i try to format sdcard from recovery it says "done" but the data still remain.
After that i tried to lock and reunlock my phone but it fail.
I launch the command fastboot oem unlock, correctly the two-choices window appear, i select yes but on my pc i see (erase fail) and bootload remain unlocked.
Please give me some advice to resurrect my phone.
Thanks for the support, and sorry for my bad english.
Emiliano
fastboot oem unlock wont lock it, use fastboot oem lock.
i need to unlock it. i've locked now i need to unlock.
But the procedure
fastboot oem unlock
fail with erase fail errore.
I had almost the exact same problem yesterday. Tried literally everything and nothing worked. In fact it kept getting a little worse with every battery pull/reboot.
I purposely re locked the boot loader, right before I went to Sprint and paid $38 for a working replacement.
Probably be a good long while before I root another phone.

After 4.0.4 OTA update device is bricked.
I have experienced the same issue you are discussing here.
A couple of days ago I received an OTA update to android 4.0.4 for my Nexus S device, vodafone UK. My phone is NOT rooted or OEM unlocked. The update downloaded but fails to install on reboot. The phone just returns to the original state, with the update waiting to install.
Any app or software will not work on the device, force closes error. If I attempt to restore to any factory settings or wipe / format the phone by any method you can come up with in a google search!, once the device reboots this change is ignored. If I copy any file on the Mass storage via usb, after the phone reboots the file is gone.
I've attempted to unlock the oem to flash the device in an attempt to resolve this, however when using ./fastboot oem unlock I get the following error:
... FAILED (remote: Erase Fail)
It seems the device has been screwed some how after receiving this update. It can only be a hardware error now....
Who is now responsible to fix this? i have had this Nexus S over 1 year now, can I take to Samsung or Vodafone for these guys to get repaired?
Sounds like hardware issue. Have you tried formatting the sdcard in windows or running chkdsk /F.
I Have Same Problem how can i fix it?

Just figured something out, i had the same issues as described above, could only boot the phone with a hair dryer
The new update Jelly Bean 4.1.1 is more forgiving when it comes to booting (probably voltages of the internal SD!! I'm still testing, but as far as i can see now, the phone boots normally again now (no more stuck on the google logo)
My problems:
- Not able to unlock bootloader (erase failed).
- Not possible to boot normally due to faulty internal SD card (only able to boot with the 'hairdryer' trick).
What did i do:
- Just tried the same as the trick on booting: use the hairdryer when fastbooting!!!
- Have everything ready; cmd, fastboot files, drivers etc, phone connected to computer with USB.
- Try to boot it first after heating the phone with the hairdryer (get past the google logo) and then immediately remove the battery.
- Then boot into fastboot mode (power and vol. up).
- Immediately execute the 'fastboot oem unlock' command.
Voila, that did the trick for me. Status OKAY and my bootloader was unlocked.
Then ROOT and update the phone to 4.1.1 with the following instructions:
(not able to unclude link, see webtrickz dot com/guide-to-manually-update-nexus-s-i9020ti9023-to-android-4-1-1-jelly-bean)
That did the trick for me!
NO MORE HAIRDRYER FOR ME!!
OEM unlock FAILED (remote: Erase Fail)
Hi
I'm replying to this message to share my experience about the same issu i had.
I bought a broken nexus s on google, auction described the phone as messed up during some software update. When cell got here:
- Bootloader was loading and locked
- Bootloader was reporting no boot image and no recovery
- Recovery was flashed with cwm 6.0.1.0
When trying to oem unlock, I was getting "FAILED (remote: Erase Fail)" no matter what I try. My config was good i've unlocked many nexus s with the same setup.
In recovery I was not able to mount sdcard, system, boot, nothing was working as it should.
After many frustrating hours, i saw this post.. What a stupid idea.. But I have nothing to loose at this point.
I don't have a hair dryer but I do have an oven. I figured the idea was to get the phone really hot..
Set the oven to 170, convection on and cooked the phone without the battery and cover for about 5 minutes until it was really hot but not melting.
Did the oem unlock and guess what.. It worked on first try.
After that I was able to update bootloader, radio, recovery and installed latest cm10. I've wipped the phone a couple of time, tried everything I could think of to test if something is not working, but everything does..
No hair dryer?
Just cook you phone at 170 for 5 minutes.
Worked for me.. go figure..

[Q] Moto G stuck; recovery fails from boot menu: Can I reflash the stock firmware?

I have a Moto G that has gotten "stuck", if that's a good description. If I start it, the initial Moto splash screens go fine and then it becomes a dark screen but backlight On and just stays stuck there for ever. (Is this what is called a boot loop? Not sure)
By using the Power + Down Vol key combo I did manage to get it to the boot menu. Unfortunately the Recovery Option there does not work. Shows a quick Moto bootup splash screen, then Says "Boot up failed" and falls to the boot menu again.
What's my best bet to recover from this?
I did install adb + fastboot on my laptop & then connected the Moto G with a USB Cable. fastboot seems to work. I could get the phone to reboot, and some other basic diagnostics. e.g. "fastboot oem get_unlock_data works". "fastboot devices" also shows my device Serial Number correctly. But I want to be careful before I issue any further erase or flash commands so I thought it best to post on here. What is the logical next step in the debug?
"adb devices" did not succeed.
The phone had the original Google / Motorola software so far and I'd never even attempted to flash it etc. Only whatever automatic updates got pushed by Google / Moto / Carrier over the network. Right before this happened I was in a call and got a bunch of pop ups saying Application xxx was being shut down.
The phone is out of warranty. It is still locked, but when I enter the details on the Moto Website it says it can be unlocked. So I can proceed to get the unlock codes etc. if that helps.
The exact SKU is XT1033. Boot menu says (Version 41.13; Battery OK; Device is locked; Status Code 0) if that is of any help. Was a Dual SIM phone on a GSM Carrier.
Tried issuing the commands
Code:
fastboot erase cache
fastboot erase userdata
Both don't seem to have helped at all.
Any other ideas?
To flash anything you first need to unlock bootloader. Doing that erases all your data including internal memory. Then you can flash a recovery & a custom rom.

Thanks @Legolas!
I did not realize that. So I guess if I just tried a flashboot flash command it would fail since my phone is not unlocked at the moment.
Luckily I can get the unlock code from the Motorola site. I will proceed to do that then first and subsequently try all the other steps needing flashing.

Indeed. Very similar problems. Could be identical.
I've, in fact, even erased via fastboot & unlocked via motorola's site. Hasn't helped so far.
I haven't had the stomach to download a 500 MB stock firmware yet.
Who do you think our bootloader is different?
@carefulcat :
Well,I am on an unlocked unrooted Android L 5.0.2 XT1033 Asia Retail Edition (upgraded via OTA) which has Bootloader version 41.18.
You've just cleared the ROM it seems.
Unlocking the bootloader will wipe off all the data from your device.
It seems yours is still locked, you have the unlock code but didn't use it.
Which OS did you have?Exact version, region and type of upgrade.
And which commands have you used till now?
If you're clear with the basics try stocking a Stock Flash ROM (depending on your bootloader and previous OS) or custom recovery like TWRP or CW.

Nexus 5 stuck on boot, help please!!!

Hello to you all, I am new to XDA and it is because of this problem I am having.
The other day, my N5 shut down unexpectedly and kept that virtual power button pressed (I've seen this happen to a lot of people). The next day, it stopped doing that, but the next big issue started: The phone was stuck on boot animation. Since then, I am not able to boot the phone, so I entered the bootloader (which is still functional) and tried to unlock the bootloader (I blame myself for not doing this since the beginning) from my PC but every time it reboots the phone to keep the changes, the bootloader locks itself again, preventing me to fastboot an image to my device
This is the main issue here, I can't start up my phone, the bootloader won't unlock and somehow, I can't ADB because my PC won't recognize the device. In other words, it seems my Nexus is bricked (may be the first Nexus in the history to be bricked).
I believe there must be a solution for this problem, can anyone help me please!?!?!
Thank you all!
this is how I fix mine.

Hey, thanks for this help, I'll let you know how that goes. And yes, I can boot into recovery.
My device isnt recognized on ADB, and everytime I try to unlock the bootloader, when the device restarts, immeditaly locks the bootloader again.
did u factory reset and wipe dalvik / cache? did u install a correct PC driver? did you ever using adb to connect to your phone?
I remember someone said sometimes you need to unlock the bootloader several times to get it unlocked.
from this and this, your nand flash seems has problem.
Try using LG Flash Tool to flash facory image, it doesn't need to unlock bootloader, but i think it's better not to write anything to nand flash as you don't know if it has problem or not, do so might make your phone completely bricked.

Problem with installing a custom recovery (custom binary blocked by OEM lock)

I have bought a used Samsung S10e (SM-G970F/DS) it came with Android 12 and it was reseted.
My goal is to install iodeOS. Even if the iodeOS website says "Update the stock firmware to the latest" I considered the instructions from LineageOS and installed the latest Android 11 version, following this (https://iode.tech/en/iodeos-installation/#1629185391421-4cf1f5c8-d900) uninstall instructions.
After Android 11 was installed I enabled the developer options. OEM-Unlock was not available. Therefore I followed these instructions (https://www.xda-developers.com/fix-...y-s9-samsung-galaxy-s8-samsung-galaxy-note-8/) and the OEM-Unlock was available again.
Now it seemed that everything is ready to install iodeOS or LineageOS. Therefore I followed this instructions (https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/beyond0lte/install). It worked fine until "Installing a cutom recovery using heimdall"
after the "heimdall flash --RECOVERY <recovery_filename>.img --no-reboot" command the S10e shows a bar which is filled from the left to the right and then it shows "Custom Binary (RECOVERY) Blocked By OEM Lock"
Now I have no clue what to do :-(
I would be glad for any help.

You need to unlock the bootloader. You've toggled the OEM Unlocking switch, so unlocking the bootloader is the next step.
Make sure you have the Samsung USB drivers installed on your PC.
Turn off your device.
While holding the Bixby and Volume Down buttons, connect your phone to your PC.
The device should start in Download Mode. Hold down Volume Up until you get a warning about unlocking the bootloader. Unlocking the bootloader will wipe your data. Click Volume Up to confirm.
Your device will wipe data, then reboot. At this point, you can reboot to download mode and flash a custom recovery using Odin or Heimdall.
Thanks a lot for all your help!
The problem was I entered the download mode by the adb command "adb reboot-bootloader" and this mode seems to be different to the one which can be accessed by pressing the keys.
Now everything worked fine
I have exactly the same problem here:
SM-A205G with OEM Unlock enabled
There is no unlock bootloader in the bootloader no option anymore
at least in the bootloder of this edition
And I suppose that if it is the bootloader that flashes everything, it is COMPLETELLY LOCKED, could be jailbroken by some new method, but until them... no option

It seems that this <confirm> option in the bootloader is being removed by samsung, so... even if unlock oem is enabled... it will not work...
I can only reach the bootloader by going to recovery mode them selecting reboot bootloader, or by adb reboot bootloader, but it boots directly in download mode without the option to long-press volume up key
A flasher that doesn't flashes doesn't makes sense. Maybe samsung have hidden something new in there?...
Ok. I've found the solution
1 - Power the phone off
2 - Hold both volume up and down
3 - PLUG THE USB BUTTON WHILE YOU HOLD BOTH these buttons

Yes. A flasher that does not flash don't exists.

Yes, you don't unlock the bootloader VIA the bootloader in Samsung phones.
so you know what happened? I accidentaly reset my phone! I have gone into download mode and there was additional choices: to unlock bootloader holt volup, so I did, then again to confirm unlocking press volup. I did so and then there was for a brief moment android logo and "erasing" and then after about 2 minutes of just Samsung logo phone restarted and asked me to perform setup as it was new! WTH? There was nothing mentioned about deletion

I had the same problem on my samsung tab a10.1. That's why I had to flash the stock firmware 3 times. Every time I flashed twrp with odin, I got the error (custom binary blocked by oem lock).
I write what they should do in order.
1. Turn on the phone.
2. Open Developer mode
3. USB debugging mode - on
4. oem unlocking - on
5. then turn off the phone and disconnect from usb
6. Connect the phone to the PC with USB by holding down the volume up and volume down buttons at the same time. WITHOUT PRESSING THE POWER BUTTON

oem unlocked
Sorry that, I had another problem. May I know how to unlock the OEM if my S10e phone can't turn on.
My device always on "samsung" display page, can't open to index. Do you know this issue? Expecting your reply.
Hi! I have the same issue on my Xiaomi Mi 11 Pro (It was Chinese) but it came unlocked with xiaomi.eu rom.
After i installed a global rom, and google wallet nfc pay did not work, so i thought okay i will lock it then so maybe wallet would accept it, (with the eu rom it worked before) so i put the device in fastboot and used fastboot oem lock on cmd...
And from then it stucks on miui recovery 5.0 screen, and says, this miui version can't be installed on this device...
I might not enabled oem unlocking before i shut if off, but i added it to my mi account so i dont know if after a week i can maybe unlock it. But i think the other possible solution would be to sideload the original chinese stock rom, which is for M2102K1AC, Mi 11 pro, codename mars, but i couldn't find it anywhere... If someone can upload a link to it, that would be a huge help! Or any idea! thx!

HI! i got a mi 11 pro 1 year ago, and it was offically chinese, but it came unlocked with Xiaomi.eu firmware, but i could't update it via the updater app, so i searched and found the global star version and just flashed it, everything worked, only now google pay nfc didnt work, it said that its probably because of the unlocked bootloader, so i got to fastboot and in cmd i sent fastboot oem lock, and since then my phone is stuck in miui recovery 5.0 screen and says that i cannot run this firmware on the device, i tried to unlock it but failed, maybe after a week, but i think that i didnt turn on oem unlocking on the phone itself before this... So im just hoping that after a week unlocking could be done... Or my other idea is, that i could install the original chinese rom with sideload, because i managed to install another global version on it since, but the result is still the same, the only problem is that i cannot find literally anywhere a mars codenamed firmware...

Anyone who might have the same situation, i found a simple, but effective solution, not sure if it works on every xiaomi device, but i will write down the steps here:
You need to use XiaomiADB, here is the download link and the description for how to use it -> https://xiaomiui.net/how-to-use-xiaomiadb-8044/ (if the page is not available, then feel free to msg me!)
For xiaomi adb, you need to go to 3rd option on the miui recovery screen, NOT THE FASTBOOT
So basically i went through the steps to “xiaomiadb sideload_miui <filename>”
And I tried to install a rom, BUT IT DIDNT ACCEPT IT!
The message was:
ERROR: This rom cannot be installed, server code -> 2001, server message -> Can't install unofficial rom
after trying 4 times all the same and: Installation of this rom via stock recovery is not allowed by Xiaomi
Says Installation failed, and then i just decided to download another rom so i PLUGGED OUT THE PHONE right after this, and went to another room to connect to wired network, to download and try a different rom... when i came back, to all my surprise, the phone was turned on, so i went to the setting dev ops and enabled bootloader unlocking, linked it to my account enabled adb and everything that is needed to flash another rom later, so then i rebooted and again, miui recovery 5.0 screen, but now i enabled unlocking, so i put the phone in fastboot, and tried MI UNLOCKER TOOL again, now it says: Please unlock 168 hours later. And do not add your account in MIUI again, otherwise you will wait from scratch.
So that means, after 7 days i wll be able to unlock it, until then, i can turn it on with the above method, in short try to sideload (copy and install) a rom to it, and then after it failed, plug it out and just wait like 10-20 maybe 30 seconds and bam your device is normally booted... I hope it helps to some of you, (i have been searching for the solution for almost a week, my other option was to pay someone who can MAYBE do it or send the phone back to china and pay the repairs, so im really happy with this method! If it helps to you, please reply so i and the others will know that it worked! Have a nice day!
