[Q] How do you like the Atrix 2 - Motorola Atrix 2

I was thinking of getting the Atrix 2 for my next phone and I am not currently thinking I will want to run a custom rom on it only root it maybe. I currently have a Samsung Captivate so what things might I miss on the Atrix 2 and also how do all of you enjoy the Atrix 2 would you recommend it for my next phone?

I had the captivate and i like the a2 better. U have more roms and mods available for the capivate then the a2 but still. Comming from someone whos had both stock... a2 i like better. Cameras better... a2 is faster and snappier.

Was the bump down in memory really a big difference? I think I haven't even used a gigabyte on my cappy yet and have had in a year and a half.

No but i have a 32 gig sd card.

, since the 4GB in this phone is all available for app storage, so in a way you are getting a huge bump in app storage, as well as the 1GB of Webtop space, that actually has Ubuntu installed on it.
Now the 16GB of storage that the captivate has is really more for things like media and other storage, and it really was not available for any "internal" phone storage, so in a way you are getting a HUGE increase in internal phone storage. You will need to get an external memory card though to store all of your music and such on, because the internal storage can not be used for such things.
I also had a captivate the day it came out, and switched to a few other phones in the almost 2 years since it was released, I like this phone a lot better, the GPS alone is worth the upgrade.

Another concern of mine how is the gps as well as the dock for the phone if you got it? Since I do mainly use my phone as my car gps.

The GPS has worked spot on for me it locks on fast and has not given me any troubles at all. I dont use a dock so cant help you there. Overall I really like the phone.

For the price this phone is great. It is not too big and its not too small. Love how it feels in my hand. Just hope we get ICS on it.

I can almost guarantee that we are not getting an official ICS upgrade. However lfaber06 is working on a port of CM9 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1427026
It might take a couple of months to get fully functional.

I just purchased my Atrix 2 about three weeks ago, and I too upgraded from the Captivate. I have not found a whole lot that I miss about the Captivate. The GPS never worked right, and the captivate was extremely glitchy in my opinion. The Atrix2 I have never had an GPS issue, it is 4g so a whole lot faster, the dual core processor is extremely nice, and the battary last about twice as long. you will want to purchase a SD card, downgrading from 16gb to the 8gb on the Atrix, but the Atrix does come with a 2gb SD card so you are only loseing 6gb in reality. The only thing that took some getting use to for me, which I have found an alternate way around this, is that I had to use Motocast in order to access the Atrix on a PC, unlike the Cappy which was almost plug and play. Would definitly recommend the Atrix 2 over the Captivate!!

Motocast isn't necessary for file transfer... just get the usb cable and plug it in to your computer, after the drivers install you can choose USB Mass Storage mode or Windows Media Sync or Motorola Media Link. USB Mass Storage is the best way to transfer files (IF you don't have any apps on the SD card! - that's one problem with our A2 )

Who knows?? I did the same and couldn't be happier. This phone runs better out of the box than the cappy does with any gingerbread rom stock or custom. No lag at all, great screen, GPS that actually works and no problems at all so far. I had an sgs2 for a week and returned it for the A2. Glad I did.

Just take a look around this board, it has been said many times, by several of us in here, besides we have seen absolutely no testing releases of it using chessecake. At least both the razr and the bionic have reported getting pre-releases of ICS this way, yet we have seen nothing even close to ICS being tested. The "BIG" update we are about to get is most likely 2.3.7.
I encourage you do a lot more "reading" in here. You are like the 4th person in the last several days who states this same thing about ICS, or requests proof that it might not come... It might still show up "officially" for our phone, but we will have a custom version way before then.

My response to the original question:
In terms of actual hardware I really love this phone. Gorgeous display, and it gets pretty decent battery life (for an android phone) even with its stock battery, and with the Motorola extended battery combined with JuiceDefender I don't have to worry about it running out of juice no matter how long I'm using it during the day (unless the GPS is turned on). As an added bonus, the phone is so slim that even with the extended battery it looks like a regular-sized smartphone.
My main beef with the Atrix 2 is that it appears as if Motorola has abandoned it in a remarkably short amount of time. It refuses to make any statements about the phone in a way that reminds me of Sideshow Bob in an old, old Simpsons cartoon ("These are the names of the people I am NOT going to murder...")
But it turns out that in a pretty short amount of time developers here have figured out how to work around Motorola's refusal to unlock the phone and whether Moto supports it or not, there are now roms available that make full use of the Atrix 2 hardware.
So, the shorter version: it's a great phone and I expect I'll be using it for a while, but I'll probably think twice before I buy another Motorola phone again because their interest in their customer base appears to end immediately after the phone is bought.

I love it

Love it even more with lfabers SC rom just waiting for bootloader unlock

Wifi is completely unusable. It's a shame a phone can get released without wifi working. Phone needs ICS or unlocked bootloader. Shame on Moto

I would say alot of us are in the same boat, we jumped on the Cappy when it was supposedly the best android phone ATT offered, and we all figured out this phone had a lot of problems, and kindly left a bad taste in our mouths, so when it is renewal time, you have the GS2 or the Atrix 2. Bought into the Samsung hype last year not happening this year.

I bet what the Atrix can do the captivate does better. But thats just me....
No one knows yet if the atrix will have a locked bootloader! If so it would be dumb to buy it IMO.

I believe the Nexus S and the Captivate have the same hardware, but I may be wrong...but if I am right I say go for the Captivate because I don't like the Nuxus S form factor (Basically the metal back plate of the Captivate vs the Nexus S plastic backplate)
Hmm whoever says Captivate does better then Atrix will, is just biased in a way. I mean I got a captivate and gave it to my brother, he really wanted to try android and he doesn't get in to phones that much.
I loved the phone, only because I rooted it and stuff and samsung sucks with updates. If you dont wanna mess around with your phone then atrix hands down will blow away captivate, performance and feature wise. Buying captivate right now is just bad choice. Dual core processor, tegra 2, hdmi out.
Plus I have to give credit where its due. Motorola has really stepped up their game in updating their phones with latest android. I have no doubts that they will have gingerbread on Atrix in the coming months.
I think Atrix will be launching earlier then previously thought, mainly because verizon is getting iphone 4 and att will counter that with atrix 4g. Plus Atrix 4g is the only phone launching that is ready for Att's LTE network.
^
Agreed, I really hope those that are use to customizing their Captivate understand the bootloader situation with the Atrix. Or you will be disappointed.
I for one, don't mind running it stock (hoping it's able to be rooted). I just want reliability and stability from this phone, plus the webtop looks kickass.
I will still keep the Captivate for my other line, and buy the Atrix off contract (no chipin required ) after a month or so of it's release to see how all this plays out. Patience will save you from buyers remorse

Move over, I think I'll be in the same boat My main line will either be the Atrix or HTC. The other will have to be the Captivate for a little while, but I'll have fun tweaking the hell out of it
If you want the latest and greatest..then wait..If not..get one now..You got 30 days to decide once you get it..With what has been ported for the Captivate you have many many choices..and you don't really know what the phone your waiting for will have or do..or be capable of doing. I suspect if not on the upcoming generation of new phones..then by the 1.4 to 1.6 dual cores..the boot loader will be locked..and you will have a a harder time doing anything with it..so...if it were me trying to decide...I would pick up a brand new Captivate right now..trick it out..and enjoy the hell out of it..The old saying is appropriate in this case..." A bird in the hand...is worth 2 in the bush..."
Mac
I'm projecting the latest and greatest will only last 3 to 6 months. So whatever you purchase, just be sure your content with it. Unless you have money to burn.
I doubt that Motorola will lock the bootloader on the Atrix.
Either way, the Atrix will run circles around the lowly Captivate.
Motorola locked the bootloader on the droid x and it was still hands down better then the captivate, I owned both would have stuck with droid x if verizon had better coverage in my area. I almost regret giving it up and just sticking out the ****ty signal. So more then likely bootloader will be locked but it will be cracked. and even if locked bootloader no way in hell will the captivate be better at anything over atrix, captivate had nothing on x and atrix does even more, so what is captivate gonna do to even be on par with it? samsung has moved on from the captivate so should u. anytime a manufacture moves on that quick from a device even a device selling in the numbers it is, its a bad sign. Besides Motorola been in phone biz way longer then any of them, I had a startak and it was a sweet phone of the time. And those big stupid phones way back in the day that was huge that was motorola aswell.
I say wait. A locked bootloader having Atrix > the Captivate (stock, custom ROM, steroids, etc. lol)

I think they now recognize what XDA/Custom ROMs can do for their phone(s) in a positive way, and they'll come to some sort of compromise.
What that is, and if it's good enough, remains to be seen.

The only thing i would have to disagree on in a way is the part of Samsung moving away so fast on a great selling product. It doesn't necessarily mean they didn;t like it and need to replace it fast.. it could just be that they want to get to work on their next "latest and greatest" to beat the captivate is all.. but who knows.. unless they posted that they made a mistake, i would be willing to bet that they are just trying to get their next best phone out is all.. So far, i believe the captivate is the best selling android through ATT at the moment. i am not up to date on the rest though . ive heard good things about the nexus S, but the one thing I heard aobut it that kinda made me go for captivate is that supposed nexus S took away the SD slot?? and this made captivate have largest storage capacity.. but ive been happy with it so far.. wife loves it and eventually when i get a new one, will give her mine ..
one thing i do wonder is since ATT is now coming out with their 4G, i cant recall if I am going to need to replace my phone or just my SIM to get the 4G capability,, any recall off hand? pretty sure it was the phone that I will need to replace, but would be great if only needed the sim
As I said: Wait for the Atrix. Motorola actually updates their phones. Don't like Motoblur? Download ADW.Launcher or Launcher Pro. Android 2.2 already does everything I need in a phone OS and I'm sure they'll bring Gingerbread to the Atrix.

[Q] Should I get the Infuse, or wait?

Hey, I know that there at already lots of threads that have been created with various people asking whether the infuse is worth getting. But in my situation my decision is a one-time deal then I'm locked in for 18 months again (until im eligible for another upgrade).
So I want to ask whether I should get the Infuse when my upgrade comes in June or should I wait for when the GS2 hopefully hits AT&T in Q3? The GS2 is obviously better than any phone out there currently however I am currently stuck with a Nokia F160 (FML) so I'm anxious to get my hands on a new phone.
What do you guys think I should do?
The question is can u wait? Honestly this phone can be better once the roms drop... the captivate was a great phone that became a much better phone once it had custom roms. If u can get infuse now and some how save say 700 in 3 mths it would be a wise choice. Remember once roms drop the phone will be much better and if u was able to deal with that Nokia for as long as u did I think u can deal with the Infuse for longer.
Just my 2¢
sent from Infuse but miss my captivate on cont. 5.5.... One day this can be as good...
You will be thrilled with the quality of the screen. It's really mind blowing how great this thing looks. I am having some weird restart issues, but only when I have my SD card installed, so I'm guessing there is some weirdness that they should be able to fix fairly easily. It runs very, very fast and the battery is great. If nothing else, sell your Infuse in 3-4 months for ~400 here, and pay the extra 150-200 to buy the branded SGS2 from att.

I agree. The Infuse has all that I want in a phone, minus some restarting/freezing hiccups that I am certain will be cured with the many roms that are forthcoming.
I may buy the SGS2 in a few months, but actually, at that point in time, I might get an unlocked Hercules - that phone has the bigger screen of the Infuse with the hardware of the SGS2 if not slightly better. Other phones will be coming out in that time too, like the HTC Holiday which seems pretty bad ass. So my two cents is to get the Infuse now, and re-evaluate/sell in a few months when similar dual core versions are made available.
Hope that helps.

SGS2 dualcore battery drain way faster, I read forums sgs2 is a joke on mobile phone. Having a dual core phone make it IMMOBILE phone, they even say yes it is darn fast especially when browsing that's the only plus they see now compare to the infuse, but I was rofl when they mention fast but useless having to look for an outlet every time is a pain in a behind on a mobile phone, that's why I decided to bought the infuse, one even mention buying a sgs2 is similar to buying a lambo that can run 200mph but can only do 65-90mph on the freeway, and sucks more gas and way more expensive than a civic whicj can also do 90mph with less gas, I saw their point, do you?

Is there a Atrix 2 Root protocol for version 2.3.5

I just got the Atrix 2 and was wondering if there is a root protocol for the 2.3.5 that does not require flashing the 2.3.4 SBF?
thanks in advance!
One all the rooting methods you see here are at the moment strictly for the original so far as I am aware, and also no one has done Anything with the A2 that I have noticed so until than hold out.
Surprisingly slow rate of adaption. This is my first Motorola device. Very nice feel and solid quality. Don't know about older blur phones but this skin isn't bad.

Return you Atrix 2 and either get the SGS II or the Atrix 1. ooooor just wait for better phones. The Atrix 2 was a joke.
Would if I could but don't have the money up front for the Cost of the Latest Greatest Most Expensive Phone considering I caught the Atrix 2 for 49.99 which is my budget when I got it. So unless you can tell me somewhere that the SGSII is selling for 49.99 than I am stuck with it.
I bricked my SGS and had to buy the atrix 2 last week, I want root so I can TI restore some of my stuff, but other then that, I just want reliable and stable
plus with ICS on the way the Atrix2 should be even better soon
Here is hoping we get root soon
I just picked one up today, I'm very surprised there isn't a forum for this phone. I've owned an sgs2, have an og atrix running cm7 and its nice but the atrix 2 screen is much better. The sgs2 was ok but touchwiz is very boring, I know its easy to change but the phone itself while fast was boring. I guess I owned a captivate for too long.
I wish att had a better selection of htc devices.
Has anyone tried super one click root for the a2? I may give it a try and see what happens. If I try I'll report back with my results. And for the guy that says the a2 is a joke,
have you tried one yet or are you basing your judgment from stats that you have read? I'm using one right now and honestly I am enjoying it more than the sgs2 to be honest with you. I almost grabbed the att branded sgs2 but figured it would be the same as the international version was.

The SGSII is actually the same screen size as the A2 on at&t. I believe the one that will have the 4.5" is the T-Mobile version. But still yes I agree 480 x 800 sucks and I like the A2 screen much better from what I saw in the Store.

What makes the A2 so bad? I don't get it I just picked one up last night and I think it's a pretty nice phone actually, completely blown away that I got it for just $50. No the screen is no Super AMOLED, it's no Retina display, but it's plenty bright and colorful and the increased pixel density makes it pretty decent. Otherwise, it's a dual core phone with a cpu that's perfectly capable, utilizing a gpu that other so-called "high end" phones also use, has 1gb of ram, 4gb of internal storage, 2gb MicroSD card (will accept up to 32gb) and is running the latest version of GB, v2.3.5.
I've been playing with my phone non-stop since I got it last night and it's been lovely. Nice and smooth, my download speeds have increased dramatically over my SE Xperia X10, it installs apps significantly faster, I think it's horribly underpriced at $49.99 and I doubt there's any devices out there at this price point that can compete. The OG Atrix has that horrible Pentile Matrix display and MotoBlur, no thanks. And the SGSII, at 4 times the price of the Atrix 2, it better be a superior device! So what phones out there at $50 are head and shoulders better than the Atrix 2?
I had to cough up 30 bucks for a 16 gb micro sd and another 50 for a good case. So what? 49.99 really is a steal when u compare it to the torch 9810, the infuse 4g, and the Xperia play. I almost pulled the trigger on the infuse but it will be ages before it gtd an update.
100% happy I bought this and the screen is very sharp
I returned the SGSII in favor of the new Atrix because the internal radios are Way better! Not quite as smooth and a little slower on the Web side, but worth it for me. Besides, the screen on the Atrix 2 is way better in the sunlight = seriously the best on the market in the sun! I've looked at them •All• since I just switched over from the iPhone 4S. (yep)
For me the screen and better radios were major selling points.
Your reasons may be different

Same here! I love the large screen and high resolution. I would love it even more if I could get root.
I played around with the A2 and the SGII for over an hr yesterday at the store and the display is better on the A2 by far. ATT price matched best buy and i walked out with the A2 for 49.99 and after playing with it all night i couldnt be more happier. This phone has a 4.3" screen but as far as the actual phone size is the smallest ATT has to offer with the same screen size and feels great in the hand. All the haters need to use this phone some before they go on with there rants about not living up to the OG because I remember not long ago when the OG was SLOW and buggy running froyo, not until it recieved gingerbread did the OG true potential start showing!! I have the OG and as soon as the A2 gets some development love and hopefully CM9 with some ICS, I will prolly retire the OG! This phone for the price is better then anything I have played with so far and until the new Nexus comes out would be hard for me to give up.

[Q] Considering to buy Atrix 2

my question is simple, should i go for the Atrix or should i look for another device in $400 price range? I have heard atrix 2 has some problems with memory card. SGS 2 is way too expensive for me but i like how Samsung supports their products while Motorola never does. So even though it does not have a dual-core processor should i consider buying Nexus S? Or HTC Sensation would be better? I really need your advice guys. Thank you.
SGS2 will have screen burn-in soon anyway.
Sensation and Sensation XE both have the "death grip" issue, at least according to Engadget.
Nexus S will also have burn-in, and isn't it too old already?
Atrix 2 has boatloads of problems, and the memory card issue is even one of the less serious ones. There's hope for the phone though, as Motorola may be releasing a software update soon, since they started looking for beta testers in their forum last month. Also, there are dedicated devs working on a rom now, as far as I know.

The Atrix 2 is a great device, the memory card is simple, just don't use a class 10 card in this phone, and don't install apps on the SDcard (this phone has 4gb, of internal app space). It is built like a tank, and we are working several good ROMs right now, so.... there is even one person working on CM9 which is ICS, it is currently being played with in it's alpha state.
I would not worry too much about Moto and thier crappy support, we are here to make this thing better than stock, and keep improving it.
The Samsung phones are not quite as high quality, but they do have an easier time hacking them, since they don't have locked bootloaders, which makes it much easier to run overcloking and things like that.
We do have those sort of things here too, it just takes us a little longer to get around the bootloader, so hacks are a little slower, that and the fact that there are only a couple devs in here right now.
Thank you guys, i guess Atrix 2 is a better option since I am not that into configuring the device. I might just root the phone, and use a custom rom with it. That is all.

When and to what will you upgrade from the venerable Captivate?

So I've been sitting on an upgrade since before the sgs3 came out. Have been telling myself to wait until it's under $100...Now the HOX is $99 via at&t or even $79 via Costco with free activation and bunch of accessories...color me tempted. Sure the One X has some flaws, but most agree it's solid especially at $80. Then again, what will these new Android phones go for after iPhone 5 is released? Probably a good deal cheaper, and I like value on the cheap
That being said, I can't complain about my Cappy running CM9; it's running as good now as it ever has and the ICS port is close enough to flawless for me.
Understandably, the question I ask is opinion...but curious what folks are eyeing up for their next phone. Considering I got my Cappy refurbished for $0 plus contract, I have half a mind to wait for the sgs3 to be similarly offered before I bite.
Thoughts? What at&t phone are you holding out for?

Maybe the Note 2, or next Nexus (always a ton of development on Nexus devices ) I've been waiting since May.

i dont have and upgrade till next year :/ so im really wanting to see some real monster phones come that time lol
i was so tempted to buy the sgs3 outright but im holding off
When i bought my captivate on Christmas of 2010, Wal-Mart/AT&T never took off the upgrade i used to purchase it.
So i waited until i was sufficiently bored with the captivate and something else caught my eye.
I bought the note about a month after it was released, do not regret it at all.
The hox is poop, a friend of mine abs fellow teammate sells phones, every one x he has sold in his store has been returned with an issue.
The s3 has been having problems with people losing their imei numbers after flashing a custom Rom, with no way to restore them, the old methods don't seem to work.

I have those three phones on my radar for the next upgrade. The One X was the lowest, and if you're getting information saying it's not worth the box it comes in, that's good to know.
I'm torn between the size of the Note and the additional horsepower of the S3. It looks like they've managed to get around the IMEI thing for the AT&T S3 (at least that's what my 5 minutes reading in that forum indicates), so I'm less worried about that.
I guess it will come down to the price difference at the time of upgrade.
So... there you go. Do with that what you must.
I got an Atrix 2 when it was $1 from Best Buy on black Friday. That's my main phone and daily driver, and my Cappy is my funsies phone. The Atrix 2 still has a locked boot loader (let's see if I ever buy another Motorola unless it's a Nexus) so I still use my Captivate a lot for tinkering.
My next phone? Probably an off-contract Nexus.

A Note 1 or 2 just depending.. or an SG3 I am pretty damn happy right now with JB on my Cappy

Something that is built for ICS and up. Something that is more bleeding-edge tech then the cappy was for it's time. So probably something not Samsung, since they are the leading brand and have nothing to prove.
-xda app, too lazy for something interesting to say-
Keeping mine.... why switch?!
Are you still using your computer from 95?
Technology has a shelf life, no matter how much you love it, it will be more than obsolete within a relatively short amount of time.
No matter how old my phone gets it will still be comparable to the newest devices in its principle purpose, to be used as a phone... Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe my dumb phone from 2005 has the comparable cellular abilities.
The reason I like this one more than my 2005, is the wifi teathering, mp3, camera, and GPS. Tablets and PC's I frequently update because I expect them to do a lot more than play music and call people. I suppose if you were in so impatient to as not wait 3 seconds for a website to load it would be worth the $500 price tag of a new phone. But I would rather be 2 years behind and use the extra $$ for something fun, like a new mountain bike or rifle.
When someone invents a modular phone system that can be upgraded like a PC, then I will buy it that day.

I'm going with either the SGSIII or Note 2. The Captivate has 512 MB ram but the SGSIII (and probably the Note 2) has 2GB! That's why android 4.1 is 'so buttery smooth!' I thought about the HTC One X but the battery is not removable, so forget it. Time to move up to buttery smooth!
Is butter related only to the ram or software also?

It's a combination of available ram, software efficiency, and processor speed. You can have the fastest processor and 1 or of 2 GB of available ram, but if the software is dis-organized, or it has illogical code, or it conflicts with the operating system, you won't have smooth operation. The Captivate on ICS is very close to its limits and JB may be the limit, depending on how the devs make their custom roms. I'm staying with CM9 RC2 until, and if, the stable version is released. Then I'll turn my Captivate into a MP3 player and wifi only browser and enjoy my stock SGSIII or Note 2.
Even on the S3 I'm not sure I'll stick with stock...maybe at least root to freeze stupid at$t bloat.
Thanks for the good input on this thread. I'm severely tempted by the $80 HOX at Costco, but keep reminding myself that S3 should get cheaper by time iPhone 5 is released in the wild. The waiting is the hardest part.

im going for the sgs3. depends on how much its going for in Feb as thats my next upgrade
its far to expensive now though. i have a feeling quad core phones are on their way to market.
I upgraded my phone about a week ago. I went from my beloved Captivate to the Galaxy S 3, and I couldnt be happier. Dont get me wrong, I loved my cappy. I flashed just about every rom that was/is available for it. But my new SGS3 is a marvel of a phone. The speed of this phone is insane. For example, when installing new apps on GS3, it only takes literally a second to install an app with a size of say 20MB. My Captivate was fast, but not that fast, but I guess thats to be expected. If you love the Galaxy S series like I do... Then its a no-brainer what to upgrade to.

I love my captivate. I've sent it to hell and back flashing constantly, soft bricking repeatedly, and dropping it occasionally, but it has remained solid, with only minor injuries. Not to mention I have a smooth, stable (for me at least) Jelly Bean ROM, and an amazing development community!
All that said, I'll run to the next Nexus device faster than a cheetah on hot asphalt.
I'm also thinking Nexus, those things get more development attention than any other device.

I was really close to getting an S3, but now that I have a REALLY fast and stable rom on my phone (helly bean), I don't feel the need to upgrade so quickly.
I'll probably wait a couple months and see what's new!
