So I'm getting the itch to get a new phone. I've currently got a Cliq that I've rooted and customized as I like it so I don't NEED a new phone. I just want one.
I'm with T-Mobile and my wife just recently got the Vibrant. In messing around with it, I think that without the Touch wiz, I'd be really happy with it. Which leads me to the Nexus S. The only reservation I have about the Nexus is the lack of SD card since I carry a ton of music with me for flights. It's not a deal breaker by any means, but it does make me pause.
Does anyone know of any new phones that may be coming out within the next 3-4 months that may be better than the Nexus S?
Thanks
There is always something better around the corner...
But the main advantage to getting a stock Google Phone is that you will get OS updates much faster then everyone else with android skinned devices.
If you like android this is an excellent buy.
Yeah, I know that is a huge advantage to the Nexus line, but I also know that if there is a great phone out there, people will root it and develop for it.
Like I said, I don't "need" a new phone, and the only thing making me think twice is the lack of SD card for music and movie space. (I travel a lot so the less electronics I have to pack the better.) I'm just curious if it would be better for me to wait to buy one in a few months or take the plunge Thursday.
The thing about the Nexus S is that it's future proof, by that I mean so many phones out there will only get 2 updates and thats it. With the Nexus S you could keep it as long as you want because you know your going to continually get updates directly from Google.
Too many people pay attention to wether or not there is better hardware on the horizon when they really should pay attention to whether their software will continue to be updated and keep the device alive and youthful.

This will be the first true Dual-core proc phone and it blows everything away in the benchmarks.

Who truly needs a dual core cellphone though, honestly most people dont even need a dual core PC
To answer your actual question, the only two that have *strong* rumors that I've heard of, are the Evo Shift and the Playstation phone. As for the Shift, the current rumors don't put its specs as all that impressive (no front camera and snapdragon CPU). Supposedly we'll hear about the Playstation phone in February. I've read that its display is supposed to rival the iPhone 4's, whatever that is. In addition, there is a not so strong rumor that Samsung's next flagship will be in Q1. Which should definitely be better than the Nexus S in specs. Motorola is supposed to unveil some new hotness at CES. Probably actually launched late Q1 or after.
My guess is if you want a phone that clearly blows away the Nexus S, you'll be waiting until Q2 or Q3 of next year.
basically it comes down to this.
If your a t-mobile customer and are not going to leave anytime soon, then the Nexus S is the best phone for you.
If you don't mind leaving t-mobile, then wait because in 4-6 months verizon and sprint will probably both get dual core phones but it'll probably be 12 months for T-Mobile to get off their ass and get one. outside of the galaxy s 2, but thats touchwiz.
Also if you just want a stock android phone, then go for it as well because there won't be another one for a while.
Q2 or Q3 may be too long for me. I've read of the Playstation phone and it seems like it may be pretty cool, but I just don't know if I want to wait that long. Is it going to be unlocked to all carriers? I am in a 2 year contract with T-Mobile due to getting my wife a new phone, leaving is pretty much not an option.
More than likely my desire for a new phone will overtake my ability to wait and I'll be at a Best Buy Thursay morning before work.
Any chance they will add an SD card to the Nexus S in the near future???

no idea how the playstation phone carrier wise is going to work, hopefully it will be all carriers, but who knows.
Unfortountly it's safe to say that they will not be adding in an SD slot to the Nexus S. Between tons of apps to stream music and video, and the 13GB of storage that acts like an SD, it should be enough.
You could always buy the Nexus S then return it before the 30 days if they announce promising phones during CES. I'll be working the registration desk at CES so hopefully I have time to look around to play around with all the new phones and gagdets.

Within the next 3-4 months? Hmm.
And also, better? They may be competitors, depending on how you look at it.
There's the LG Star, Motorola Olympus, PlayStation Phone, Evo Shift, and possible Galaxy S 2. Not all of these are confirmed for next '3-4 months' and even then, they might not even be "better".
Sure, the LG Star packs a Tegra 2. Which, in all honesty, has a GPU which barely tops the Hummingbird. Tegra 2 is nothing to be too excited about. If you want a dual core, you want the dual core Snapdragon or the Orion. The Orion will most likely be the only one paired with a gorgeous Super Amoled which is unmatched but this is also preference. Even then, these may not be out for over 4 months.
Also you need to consider software. Generally, nothing runs faster than AOSP. Nor is as open nor fast to get updated. The Nexus One STILL holds its ground merely because it has Froyo when Galaxy S phones still don't. It may not be as powerful as fast, and it may be sluggish, but it's still "ahead" in a sense. This will probably be the case with the Nexus S and Honeycomb, with the exception that this thing has a friggin Hummingbird, which is theoretically capable of running Quake 3 Arena at 90fps with the 56 fps limit unlocked.
Don't get me wrong though, the Tegra 2 isn't BAD. But it isn't worth jumping the gun over a Hummingbird when the Snapdragon and Orion are around the corner to the Tegra 2. Tegra 2 and Hummingbird is like an 'either, or'. Don't let the Tegra 2 be your deciding factor. It's all about the carrier, the way the phone feels to you, and just personal preference in general. If you think the LG Star is hot, then that's what you should get. If you think the Nexus S is hot, then that's what you should get. They will probably perform about equal.

Benchmarks shmenchmarks. My Nexus One stock outbenchmarks my Vibrant stock 2.2 in both Quadrant and Linpack but the Vibrant is way faster and way smoother. WAYYYY.

The thing about the PlayStation Phone is that well, it's clunky and huge, and potentially ugly.
I'll tell everyone a secret android is all about software so even if someone puts out a quadcore phone that still won't let it get the newest updates any faster. After 2 years of owning stock android phones I have read thousands of posts of people complaining about why their super phone has yet to get the latest update. Even nexus users had a thread that was 5000 posts of them yelling at Google because 2.2 was a month late.

The only problem is that Android isn't built and optimized (yet) for more than one core. The dual core isn't going to be making a huge impact probably for another six months or more. If you are looking for a phone now, it sounds like the Nexus S is it.
I think this thread convinced me finally to get the NS
Are you guys sure you want a dual core phone? Because, you know, there are already rumors of a quad core phone coming out in 2012 or whatever. Might as well wait for it.
I'm on TMobile... I won't be waiting around. I'm grateful this phone is releasing because after that you got the MT4G's childish face looking you in the eye. And who knows how soon TMO will drop us another gem that competes w/ the NS.

42fps nenamark + 67 fps neocore @ lg star... 1-8fps more for tegra in comparsion to hummingbird is way less then i thought and not worth an upgrade (yet) .... the difference between snapdragon and hunmingbird is much bigger regarding the gpu
Edit: getting 47.1fps on my sgs in nenamark... 59fps at neocore(seems to be limited to 59...) sooo where's the point in tegra2 anyway?

Hey mklgee, you mentioned buying the Nexus S and then returning within 30 days. Is this an option Best Buy does with smartphones? If so, that is an interesting idea if something does pop up soon after the Nexus release.
After reading these discussions, I think I will just go ahead and get the Nexus S on Thursday. I do wish it had an SD card though. I currently have a 16gb SD card in my Cliq that is filled with music, pics, and app info. I just hope a phone doesn't come out say in April that is so much better to make me remourseful.
Thanks for the discussion points guys.

Most stores have 30 day return policies generally. They may charge restocking fees. Look it up
Hello, I have a captivate with rogers at the moment and I have had enough with them. I am not happy with Rogers, their service is sketchy where I am. Bell and Telus have great service here, but I am leaning towards Bell because I have alot of other services with them, they have great coverage here, and It would seem they have the most attractive phone to me.
I am looking at the Motorola Atrix that will be released here soon, Is this a good choice ? What I would like in a phone is a dual core processor, 1GB RAM, and at least 16GB internal storage.
I know Samsung is coming out with a 4.5" phone that fits the above and the bigger the screen the better for me! But I have no idea who is going to carry it, when it will come, etc.
Is the Atrix a good phone to go to ? should I wait till there are more dual core options here in Canada ? are there any other ones announced with an arrival date ?
Thanks guys.
I've heard that the atrix isn't as impressive as it seems, but Samsung is slow at updates.

I don't know too much about the canadian carriers, but I just went through a similar phone switch on AT&T. I looked at the atrix, as well as the HTC Inspire HD (aka HTC Desire HD).
I'm not trying to convert you away from the Atrix, which is probably a great phone, but I eventually chose the Insipre for the following reasons:
- Solid build quality (The Inspire Snapdragon is a safer choice than a first gen dual-core for me, considering the good benchmark scores of the Inspire - easily good enough for me for awhile). For some reason the Atrix plastic cover and design seemed dated to me (but I generally like HTC's hardware designs anyway, and I like the extra weight in the device).
- HTC Sense > MotoBlur (both in style, and performance), but since I'll probably run custom ROMs it won't matter to me all that much (and for style, I'll probably end up with LaucherPro, ADW, etc as a launcher anyway).
- The Inspire boards seem to have a decent amount of Dev support on their side, though I'm sure I will really sadly miss Designgears wonderful work (pretty sure he's got an Atrix). Keep in mind the Inspire has a head-start with all the DesireHD rom work that's out there, the Atrix is likely going to get a bunch of support too.
- HTC has claimed the Desire HD will get 2.3 by the end of June, and HTC has been one of the more reliable companies for getting updates put out there. (I have no doubt that the Atrix will get 2.3, but will Moto try some new bootloader protection?)
That's it for now, as I probably should be working.
Just my opinions though, hopefully helps you in your decision.
Atrix would be a pretty nice phone, but I'm always kind of skeptical when it comes to Motorola Phones. I'd look into some HTC phones. In my experience, they are the overall best Android manufacturer. Not sure what phones are available in Canada though.
try LG optimus 3d. 4gb ram. dual core. highest quadrant score.
I was interested in the Atrix too. Judging by all the negative posts over in the Atrix forum, I think I'll pass on it. Do yourself a favour and pass on it as well. I too was not happy with Rogers, and switched to FIDO (I know same company). I've dealt with Bell on other issues (not cell phone) and they are no better. I do agree though I think their coverage area and network (Bell) is best.
Well I mean, hoe are you going to say he should or shouldn't get it if you haven't even used it? The best you can do is post your oppinions oon the device and what you do and don't like.
However, I have it and I'm taking it back. Not because it is a bad phone or there are things wrong with it, but I just don't want to use my upgrade right now and I don't need the phone.
It has a higher resolution so things are smaller and crisper, allowing you to see more things at one time.
The phone is amazingly fast and the high amount of RAM lets you have many apps in the background without slowing down at all.
The battery life is great, and people areg reporting great life with the phone; I couldn't complain.
All in all, if you aren't going to upgrade to a custom kernel, then youll be good to go.
Anymore qquestions, feel free to ask.

the SNS is safe, unlike the I9000M
no internal SD issue
it works great in either Wind or MobilityCity
no external SD, is very hard to go a day without it
it can get buggy with 2.3 is not that smooth, there are many apps that are not 2.3 ready, and FCs
updates are OTA direct from google
in SNS you will lose all the cool multimedia features from SGS
no MKV, no DivX, no AVI, no etc....

They're two different sceens. The Nexus S has 2 variants. None of them use "AMOLED"
I9020 Nexus S: Super AMOLED
I9023 Nexus S: Super LCD
And in my opinion, I9020 > I9023. Pretty sure the large % of the crowd would agree.
And yes, rooting is SO SIMPLE on the Nexus S. All you do is fastboot oem unlock, fastboot flash recovery recovery.img and flash a su.zip and you're rooted. The hardest part is installing the drivers and 2.3.X SDK etc etc.
And yeah you can get CM7.

Though there are users who will swear by SLCD instead.
A simple way to differentiate the screen.
SAMOLED : More vibrant colours and deeper blacks.
SLCD : Sharper and more clarity
Both screens are awesome though. You won't go wrong with either one
But if you're buying it in Singapore, it's going to be i9023 version, which is SLCD.
thanks.. Sooner i will get one...
Hi, I'm looking to buy a phone pretty much for Android development. I'd be looking to experiment and play initially, not for commercial use yet. I'd be looking to do some augmented reality apps, both position-based and location-based.
I don't really use phones for.. calls, but I would be looking to have this as a long-term investment that I'd like to last for a few years. Looking at the specs for the S on paper, it's a little disappointing in terms of power, especially when compared to the likes of the Samsung S2 or the HTC pyramid/shooter. I'm sure dual-cores will go from speed to speed before hitting quad though, but at 1Ghz, the Nexus S is essentially still like a Nexus 1, with a few more bits and pieces.
Watching a video - the story of the nexus - on youtube.com/googlenexus, one google guy implied that there's more to come from them, and I've read in a thread around here that they tend to release every 6 months. I'd be really peeved if I bought a Nexus S only for a new Nexus to come out in a few months time.
I am interested in Gingerbread, and Samsung's touchwiz looks so incredibly crap, so, long story short, for someone who doesn't want to buy phones too often, and would use it mainly for dev experimentation with the odd phone call, would the Nexus S really be worth it? I'd be prepared to wait a month or two and pay a bit extra for a dual-core.
Looking forward to hearing your opinions. Thanks
One reason why Google did not release a dual core nexus when they could have done it, is because Android OS was not optimized for dual cores yet. So even when other manufacturers starts to push dual core models. It won't really work as well as Nexus S until Google release a dual core Nexus in future.
Hummingbird is a still considered a huge upgrade over the 1st gen Snapdragon processor which the Nexus One had in terms of graphics capability. Thus making graphics intensive applications/games and UI enhancements such as live wallpapers a much smoother experience.
You can of course wait for the next Nexus to be out. But in terms of technology, you cannot finish waiting. After you get a dual core Nexus a quad core Nexus might be out in future. It depends on how you see things and whether you think the Nexus S would be worth the buy.
To me its well worth the buy.
Ahh, thanks for the reply. OK, so, I had a basic play on the Nexus S today. No internet or connectivity though, and only stock apps. The people in CPW didn't really know much about it Overall the phone feels very responsive. I previously had a Desire, which I sent back because it had a cracked case, and it felt sluggish at times. It's nice to see an Android system like its supposed to.
The Nexus S in UK is £429. The 16gb S2 is down for £530ish. It's hard to think that for a little bit more I'd be getting dual-core so that even though Android isn't yet ready for dual-cores yet, it would be in later versions. The problem is the Samsung UI though,
I don't want to buy one of the latter single-core phones only for it to vanish in the power of dual-cores. For example, experimenting with augmented reality - 3d models on screen as opposed to info boxes - I'd imagine would be pretty intensive.
The Nexus S seems to be a basic prototype of where the new phones should head.
I don't know. I'm getting itchy fingers!

i too have itchy fingers. although i feel that the nexus and evo 3d arent significant enough jumps to make me switch from my evo. i would like the speed of the evo shift's cup/gfx and/or the hummingbird but the form factors that they are available in dont really do it for me. almost 100% decided on sticking with the evo for a little while longer...a brand new one at that
I was thinking of getting the Atrix 2 for my next phone and I am not currently thinking I will want to run a custom rom on it only root it maybe. I currently have a Samsung Captivate so what things might I miss on the Atrix 2 and also how do all of you enjoy the Atrix 2 would you recommend it for my next phone?
I had the captivate and i like the a2 better. U have more roms and mods available for the capivate then the a2 but still. Comming from someone whos had both stock... a2 i like better. Cameras better... a2 is faster and snappier.

, since the 4GB in this phone is all available for app storage, so in a way you are getting a huge bump in app storage, as well as the 1GB of Webtop space, that actually has Ubuntu installed on it.
Now the 16GB of storage that the captivate has is really more for things like media and other storage, and it really was not available for any "internal" phone storage, so in a way you are getting a HUGE increase in internal phone storage. You will need to get an external memory card though to store all of your music and such on, because the internal storage can not be used for such things.
I also had a captivate the day it came out, and switched to a few other phones in the almost 2 years since it was released, I like this phone a lot better, the GPS alone is worth the upgrade.
Another concern of mine how is the gps as well as the dock for the phone if you got it? Since I do mainly use my phone as my car gps.
The GPS has worked spot on for me it locks on fast and has not given me any troubles at all. I dont use a dock so cant help you there. Overall I really like the phone.
For the price this phone is great. It is not too big and its not too small. Love how it feels in my hand. Just hope we get ICS on it.
I can almost guarantee that we are not getting an official ICS upgrade. However lfaber06 is working on a port of CM9 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1427026
It might take a couple of months to get fully functional.

I just purchased my Atrix 2 about three weeks ago, and I too upgraded from the Captivate. I have not found a whole lot that I miss about the Captivate. The GPS never worked right, and the captivate was extremely glitchy in my opinion. The Atrix2 I have never had an GPS issue, it is 4g so a whole lot faster, the dual core processor is extremely nice, and the battary last about twice as long. you will want to purchase a SD card, downgrading from 16gb to the 8gb on the Atrix, but the Atrix does come with a 2gb SD card so you are only loseing 6gb in reality. The only thing that took some getting use to for me, which I have found an alternate way around this, is that I had to use Motocast in order to access the Atrix on a PC, unlike the Cappy which was almost plug and play. Would definitly recommend the Atrix 2 over the Captivate!!

Motocast isn't necessary for file transfer... just get the usb cable and plug it in to your computer, after the drivers install you can choose USB Mass Storage mode or Windows Media Sync or Motorola Media Link. USB Mass Storage is the best way to transfer files (IF you don't have any apps on the SD card! - that's one problem with our A2 )

Just wondering... what's with so many A2 users coming from the Captivate?

Who knows?? I did the same and couldn't be happier. This phone runs better out of the box than the cappy does with any gingerbread rom stock or custom. No lag at all, great screen, GPS that actually works and no problems at all so far. I had an sgs2 for a week and returned it for the A2. Glad I did.

I can almost guarantee that we are not getting an official ICS upgrade. However lfaber06 is working on a port of CM9 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1427026
It might take a couple of months to get fully functional.

How can you almost guarantee that we will not be getting official ics?
And for the record, i absolutely love my Atrix 2, one of the best phones I've ever bought!

Just take a look around this board, it has been said many times, by several of us in here, besides we have seen absolutely no testing releases of it using chessecake. At least both the razr and the bionic have reported getting pre-releases of ICS this way, yet we have seen nothing even close to ICS being tested. The "BIG" update we are about to get is most likely 2.3.7.
I encourage you do a lot more "reading" in here. You are like the 4th person in the last several days who states this same thing about ICS, or requests proof that it might not come... It might still show up "officially" for our phone, but we will have a custom version way before then.
My response to the original question:
In terms of actual hardware I really love this phone. Gorgeous display, and it gets pretty decent battery life (for an android phone) even with its stock battery, and with the Motorola extended battery combined with JuiceDefender I don't have to worry about it running out of juice no matter how long I'm using it during the day (unless the GPS is turned on). As an added bonus, the phone is so slim that even with the extended battery it looks like a regular-sized smartphone.
My main beef with the Atrix 2 is that it appears as if Motorola has abandoned it in a remarkably short amount of time. It refuses to make any statements about the phone in a way that reminds me of Sideshow Bob in an old, old Simpsons cartoon ("These are the names of the people I am NOT going to murder...")
But it turns out that in a pretty short amount of time developers here have figured out how to work around Motorola's refusal to unlock the phone and whether Moto supports it or not, there are now roms available that make full use of the Atrix 2 hardware.
So, the shorter version: it's a great phone and I expect I'll be using it for a while, but I'll probably think twice before I buy another Motorola phone again because their interest in their customer base appears to end immediately after the phone is bought.
I love it
Love it even more with lfabers SC rom just waiting for bootloader unlock

Wifi is completely unusable. It's a shame a phone can get released without wifi working. Phone needs ICS or unlocked bootloader. Shame on Moto

I would say alot of us are in the same boat, we jumped on the Cappy when it was supposedly the best android phone ATT offered, and we all figured out this phone had a lot of problems, and kindly left a bad taste in our mouths, so when it is renewal time, you have the GS2 or the Atrix 2. Bought into the Samsung hype last year not happening this year.
I've retired my G2X but still use it daily for other things. My main driver is GS2 T989 now.
But I'm not totally happy with the phone. And I look at the new models, HTC ONE S, X, V, Galaxy SIII and frankly I'm not excited about those phones.
Mainly I want a phone with full Dev support like the HTC Sensation, but the beast speed of the GS2, and the size of the G2X. And the new phones are turning into mini tablets.
Either that or I'm burned out from Android and just feel there has to be more. Just thought I'd share my frustrations with my android phones.

I agree, I am underwhelmed by the newly released phones which don't really add value to what the G2X has to offer except that the G2X is the Rodney Dangerfield of phones, it gets "no respect". LG screwed up the debut of the G2X with faulty firmware and NVIDIA crippled the G2X by not providing the hardware acceleration drivers and the insults continue with LG not providing ICS for it. LG and NVIDIA have moved on, abandoning the G2X which has severely devalued it. Consequently, it's a wonder that there are still so many developers working on modded ROMs and kernels for it. The newer phones are still being released with Gingerbread with "upgradeability to ICS" being offered which can't be believed until it actually happens. There's still hope for the G2X if there's an ICS release for any other phone which has the Tegra2 in it. As for the newer phones, their potential is also unrealized until they get ICS and have apps and games which take full advantage of their capabilities. So, I'm sticking with the G2x, for now.
If the One S were HD I'd be perfectly content with it. And unlike the G2X, it's perfectly usable new, out of the box.
I love the move to bigger screens myself.
G2x with the new update 2.3.4 rock solid. Everything snappy, speaker feel like louder too. I have my hand on sensation with ics still feel slow compare with g2x on GB. Also I tried to loading YouTube on galaxy nexus head to head with g2x, still, g2x still load faster.
I want to see what Intel has on store for us.
So just read a article on the gs3 in it it said that international users with there quad core phones are going to be jealous of the us dual core phone's battery life lmfao

I am on the opposite side of that thinking. I love watching android evolve into the beast that it is today. I remember getting my first android after using windows for years(Sidenote: I use to download episodes of Family Guy" and use windows media encoder to shrink the file size to fit the screen of my Samsung i700. It blew my friends' minds because they all had Razrs and couldn't do the things could.) My G1 was poop brown, the screen was barely legible, it was bulky, it was slow as hell, and the Market was a joke but I, and many others, saw a lot of potential in so we stuck with it. Now its just been great watching the growth of Android. Look at the Major Milestones.
G1-> Droid ->HTC Evo-> Galaxy S2-> Galaxy Nexus-> One X/GS3
I'd get the HTC One S if it had a removable battery and a MicroSD card slot...
Thats the only reason holding me back from getting the new devices. Also its microSIM which will suck, and won't be able to swap phones the way I love doing.
MicroSIM+No SD Memory slot.
Thats why the new phones disappoint me.

I've used a MicroSIM -> SIM Adapter before, it was a cheap POS but it worked.
